Kai POV: I groaned as I woke up, but I didn't open my eyes. It was mostly the lights being too bright, but also the nightmarish feeling that made me feel weak. Even though I can't remember what it was about. I groaned again as I unintentionally shifted against my bad shoulder.
I felt someone gently hold my left hand and turn down the lights, which let me open my eyes. It was Nya that was holding my hand, and Lloyd was walking over.
I looked back at Nya and said, "Hey, sis."
"Hey, are you okay?" She looked concerned.
"Yeah, just sore." That was true, and not. My stomach was turning all over the place, but it wasn't too bad.
"You sure?" Lloyd said, sitting on the other side of the bed.
"Yeah."
"Any bad dreams? Anything you want to talk about?" Nya asked, gently squeezing my hand.
"No?" Why was she asking that?
She and Lloyd shared a look but didn't say anything. Which made me suspicious and worried.
"What happened?" I asked, holding back a cough.
Nya looked away but kept her grip on my hand as Lloyd said, "You had… a really bad nightmare. You almost injured yourself and Zane had to sedate you again."
I froze. That explains the nightmarish feeling I had when waking up.
"I don't remember that…" Nya looked at me as I said that.
"It was really bad. I'm kind of glad you don't remember." Nya said, laughing quietly.
I smiled at her before coughing a little.
"Are you still in pain?" Lloyd asked, gently putting a hand on my shoulder.
"Not too much. I'm mostly just sore." I answered as I leaned back.
"That's good…" Lloyd stated, but he clearly wanted to say something else.
But Nya beat him to it by saying, "Kai… What happened to you? ...how did you get so injured?"
I stopped as my mind went blank, then I looked away. I couldn't look at her as they all came rushing in, despite me not wanting them to.
The screams, the clashing, the hollowed out face that had blood spatters on it, the running through the halls, the army screaming as they chased me, the hollowed out laugh echoing through the halls, the moment the sword went…
"Kai!" Lloyd said loudly, shaking my shoulder slightly.
He pulled me out of those memories, making me hear the heart rate monitor. My heart rate was high, way too high. I took some shaky breaths then groaned as the pain shot through my shoulder. I started coughing violently and couldn't stop until someone put something on my face and I could breathe. It was an oxygen mask and I took a deep breath. My stomach was now in knots, but it was still manageable.
"Better?" Nya asked. She was the one that had the mask.
"Yeah…" I croaked out.
They again gave each other a look, but I didn't say anything. Because I know this is bad no matter how you look at it.
"Kai…" Lloyd said, but was interrupted by the door opening. It was Zane.
He walked over and said, "It's time to clean the stab wound."
It got a little awkward as Nya nodded and helped me sit up. Lloyd helped me get the shirt off and he removed the bandages carefully. It did look better than before. Zane began to apply the medicine and I hissed. Nya kept a hold on my hand, giving me something to focus on. Zane was quick and soon Lloyd applied fresh bandages and helped me lie back.
"How's the pain?" Zane asked, throwing away the old bandages.
"A six right now." I said, as my stomach turned.
"Understood." He said, injecting my IV.
"Are you sure that's all? You look a little sick." Nya asked.
"It's just the meds. Nothing to worry about." I reassured her, adding a weak smile.
She didn't look convinced, but Zane said, "He'll be fine. But you won't be if you don't go and get some sleep. You've been awake since we found him."
She was about to argue with him, but they locked eyes. After a few moments she nodded and slowly left, with Lloyd in tow.
He stopped at the door and said, "Call if you need us."
"Alright." Zane answered, and Lloyd shut the door.
Zane then looked at me and said, "Kai, are you sure you're feeling well?"
I wanted to answer him but I felt bile suddenly shot up and gagged. Zane, not missing a beat, quickly grabbed the closest bucket and shoved it under me. I coughed it all out and once it was gone I leaned on Zane, not having much strength left.
"Feeling weak?" He asked, Feeling my forehead.
I nodded slowly, and he understood. Gently laying me back and going to dump the bucket before coming back.
"I'm gonna run some tests on you, so please try to stay awake." He said, calmly.
I nodded and watched him turn on the scanners. My stomach isn't turning as much anymore, but it is now aching terribly. Once the scanners finished Zane looked over the results, keeping his face neutral.
"Looks like the bruising that we predicted is more severe around your stomach than we thought. Fortunately there's no internal damage. And you should have to throw up again." He said, now looking relieved.
"Yay…" I said, even sounding tired.
He noticed and helped me lay all the way down.
"I know you're tired, so try and get some more rest. It'll do you some good." He said, pulling up the blanket.
"What about…" I stopped, not really wanting to talk about the nightmare.
"I'll be right here. You don't have to worry." He reassured me.
I still wasn't sure, but I was so worn out that my eyes were already closing on their own. And I drifted off quickly.
