Episode Nine Part One
Aurora had been rather quiet for the remainder of the day. On the way to the airport, she hadn't spoken a single word nor shared a glance with either Thomas, Miriam, or her boyfriend Marcus. She had spent much of the time cradling her sister's necklace; it would always remain around her neck until they were reunited. How she missed her so much.
During the car journey, she laid her head against Marcus's shoulder for the entire journey. He kept a warm arm wrapped around her shoulders at all times. Thomas and Miriam knew it wouldn't be a good idea to talk to her; she was going through a hard time and she needed to handle it alone.
On the plane, she and Marcus sat by themselves. She kept her eyes glued to the window for much of the journey. Marcus wanted to talk to her but something held him back. He turned his head to his brother and their friend who sat in the centre staring over at the pair.
"Talk to her," Thomas whispered over.
"I can't," he answered back quietly.
"Come on," urged Miriam. "You said you were gonna take care of her so talk to her. If you did it before, you can do it again,"
Marcus turned his head and in the reflection of the mirror, he saw icy tears falling down Aurora's cheeks. He reached over and touched her hand. She didn't turn.
"Aurora…I'm here for you," Marcus said softly. "I'm sorry that is so painful for you. It's painful for me too. But they'll be back. I'm sure they'll only be gone for at least a few months. They can't stay in the past forever,"
Aurora turned her head slowly. "But how do we know they won't face any dangers in the past? I never thought I would feel this scared but…now I'm terrified,"
Marcus sighed. "I know. I'm scared too. Since Phillipe and Argus died, I've always been scared of losing any more of my family. Especially Matthew. When I was close to dying in the 18th century, I was more terrified than I had ever felt in my entire life. I knew I was never going to see my human family again because of horrible conflicts. But then when Matthew sired me and I got a new family I no longer felt alone. You see Aurora, even if we're separated from loved ones, there'll always be people who care about us. And when you're with them, you realise that you're never alone. I'm with you always. I made a vow to keep you safe. So that's what I'm going to do,"
Aurora felt deeply comforted. "And I'm going to keep you safe too,"
Marcus smiled back. She leaned forward and kissed him.
Miriam pursed her lips and just got back to reading her book. Thomas slowly turned away to focus back on typing an article but he gave his brother and his girlfriend a happy glance. But seeing them happy made him sad too. He turned away and chose to bury his sadness in his work.
They arrived at the airport by the next morning. They waited for their large pieces of luggage in the luggage lounge.
"I'll call Sophie and Nate and let them know we've arrived," Aurora said picking up her phone.
"Here's my address," Thomas showed her the address on his phone. "Tell Hamish to drive them there. You and Marcus should head to his house so you can get settled in again. Not that it should take long again. You can always come over today if you'd like,'
"That would be wonderful," Marcus approved.
"I'm going to visit my son if that's all right," Miriam requested.
"Be our guest," Aurora said. "Please come and visit soon,"
"Oh you bet I will," Miriam said.
They retrieved their luggage and they walked to the car park to pick up their cars.
"See you guys later," Thomas waved to his brother and Aurora.
"See ya!" they waved back together.
"Don't you two get up to anything," Miriam warned.
Marcus scoffed. "What are we going to get up to?"
Miriam just gave them a hard stare.
"Okay. Okay," he answered. "We're going to get too intimate,"
"Let's just get going," Aurora spoke up, annoyed by the conversation. "Please tell them we'll be over to visit soon,"
"Will do. See you later love birds," Thomas waved.
Marcus and Aurora furrowed their eyebrows playfully; they were going to have to get used to it. Both cars drove off to Oxford and then went off in two separate directions. Thomas drove Miriam to the parks at her request.
"Say hello Jason for me," he requested.
"Will do. You take care of our new friends. You're doing good letting them stay,"
"It feels great to have company around the house. I should get going. Hamish will be there by now,"
"See you soon Tom," Miriam waved and walked off. Thomas drove the rest of the way in his car to his neighbourhood and to his relief, he saw Hamish with Sophie and Nathanial.
"Hello," he greeted.
"Hi Tom," Hamish shook hands and patted him on the back. "Take it the journey went well?"
"Yep. And Marcus and Aurora should be at his house by now,"
"Oh thank goodness," Sophie breathed.
"Now, shall we get you guys settled in?" he offered.
"Yes please," Nathanial picked up the suitcases.
"I need to get going," Hamish said. "I have to meet my girlfriend soon,"
"You go ahead Hamish," Thomas offered. "You've them here safely and now you can let me take the hands-on deck. I'll call you sometime soon. Come over whenever you'd like,"
Hamish smiled gratefully and shook his hand and patted his back again.
"Thank you, Hamish," Nate and Sophie shook hands with him.
"You both take care. And you too Tom," Hamish waved goodbye, entered his car, and drove off. Thomas led his new guests inside his grand house. It was crowded with pretty furniture and it was painted in rich colours.
"I love your house," Sophie said.
"Let me take you up to the guest room," Thomas led them up the stairs to the third floor into the big guest room. "I hope you guys will be comfortable here," A large double bed of velvet blue was decorated with unique artwork. Nate admired the exclusive furniture including the two nice chairs and the wooden furniture.
"This is perfect," Nate said.
"Thank you for having us in your home," praised Sophie.
"It feels good to have some guests here. It's been a little lonely in here for quite some time. Marcus and Aurora don't live too far away at all. She's always more than come over. In the meantime, my brother and I will be positioning some Knights around Oxford. They'll let us know if any member of the Congregation or any associate to its members approach this city,"
"Thank you," Nate said.
"Well…I'll ah….let you two get settled in," Thomas turned around to leave them.
"Would it be okay if my mum comes here?" Nate spoke up.
Thomas turned around. He didn't want to refuse but the looks on his face expressed uncertainty. Though an ally, as a member of the Congregation, it wouldn't be smart to let Agatha know anything about their plans should their secret spill out unintentionally.
"I just want her to see that we're safe," he implored.
"Very well," Thomas accepted. "She is welcome to come over and stay if she wishes. But I must have the knights watch her in case of any suspicions,"
"We understand," Nate didn't like his mother to be spied on but he understood the reasons why. "Thank you again. Your generosity will always be appreciated by us,"
"I'm just happy to give help to anyone who's a friend to my family," Thomas smiled back and then left them to settle in.
Whilst Sophie unpacked their clothes, Nate pressed the phone to his ears as he called for his mother. He waited a while. Then the voice of Agatha filled the room as he pressed the speaker button.
Nate. Thank goodness you called. Where are you and Sophie?
We're at Thomas de Clairmont's house in Oxford. He's agreed to shelter us until the baby is born. He's Matthew de Clairmont's eldest son.
How sweet of him. Are you both all safe?
We are. Thomas said you could come over and stay if you wanted to.
Tell him I say thanks.
How did it go at the Congregation?
I'd rather we'd discuss this once I get here. I should be here in a few hours. My plane landed back from Venice not too long ago. So much happened. It'll be safe to discuss this in person.
Good. Love you mum.
I love you too
Thomas sat down in his study and typed more articles at his desk for the next few hours. After having to say goodbye to his father and new stepmother, which was so heart-breaking, he only felt like doing work to take his mind off things. But the more he worked, the more he became rather lost in all the events that had unfolded over the last few months. It had been quite a transformation for him. Despising witches and then rescuing one. Befriending different species and now giving shelter to new friends who were daemons. He had never felt more changed than he had since the night he was sired and became a vampire forever.
Aurora grinned when she found herself standing in front of Marcus's glorious house again. She couldn't wait to stay inside it this time for longer. They went inside and they dropped all her bags on the couches and she collapsed onto one of the big ones, exhausted from the journey. Marcus brought her some cold water and she drank it all down in one gulp.
He sat down next to her with a glass of wine.
"Feels great to be back inside your house again. And sitting on this couch,"
"Remember it's the one I popped you on when I rescued you?" Marcus asked.
"Yep," Aurora popped off on the 'p'. "And you were sitting and watching over me, making me feel so safe,"
Marcus chuckled. "Let's get settled in,"
"This time I'm in your bedroom," Aurora reminded.
Marcus flushed and felt embarrassed. "Remember what the others said about being too intimate,"
"Doesn't mean we can't share the same bed," she stood up and walked right up the stairs in the direction of Marcus's room. His face illuminated at the thought of his girl sleeping right next to him.
Peter Knox and Satu were standing somewhere private at the airport whilst Gerbert was talking privately on the phone with someone anonymous. Peter Knox twiddled his fingers and an invisible barrier formed over him and Satu.
"What are you doing?" she demanded.
"I am keeping our secret safe from Gerbert,"
"You mean the secret of that girl Aurora? The daughter whom Rebecca kept hidden from you?"
Peter's expression turned wicked as she mentioned her. "She is no daughter to Rebecca. She is a freak. A freak we need to examine,"
"How long do you think you can keep this hidden from the Congregation?"
"We will keep it hidden as long as necessary," Peter emphasised boldly. "Whatever powers that girl has we need to get our hands on. We will not allow vampires and let alone daemons to know anything about her. And we are going to keep it that way,"
"If Gerbert finds out…" Satu's voice turned sinister. "He will rip your head off,"
"Not if you keep your mouth shut which I am ordering you to," threatened Peter. "We will get our hands on Aurora. As she wasn't at the house it means she is in this time whilst Diana and Matthew have abandoned her. Until they return, we will do whatever it takes to get our hands on her,"
"You may think that" Satu spoke back, unafraid yet still a little yielding to his intimidations. "But don't forget there are other vampires who will do whatever it takes to protect her. Like the vampire who took me out when I was weak and rescued Diana from La Piere,"
Peter tried to speak again but he magically felt the presence of Gerbert approaching them. He undid the barrier invisibly just as he approached them.
"Who were you consorting with?" Satu questioned.
"That is my own business," Gerbert answered back. He glanced a little coldly at both of them. "Don't think I didn't smell you both using magic to conceal yourselves. What were you two talking about?"
"that is our business," answered Satu back. "Don't we have a plane to catch?"
Gerbert furrowed his eyes with a sinister warning at the pair before walking off. The witches followed after him.
Thomas was pouring some coffee for the daemons. The couple entered the kitchen. "Here. Thought you two might like some beverages with some biscuits,"
"Thank you," Sophie answered gratefully.
"What are they like? These Knights of yours?" questioned Nate curiously.
"The Knights of Lazarus were founded in 1098 by my grandfather. He created it to be a separate organisation from the Congregation to serve many purposes. It feels strange that they're being called back again after so many centuries but as grandmasters, Marcus and I will be using them to protect you both and Aurora," Thomas vowed. "And your child too. Whether daemon or witch,"
"Thank you," breathed Sophie.
"I have a feeling they'll play a very important role in our fight against the Congregation. And for that, we must be prepared,"
The bell rang across the hallway.
"I'll get that," Thomas walked over to the front door. He opened it slowly and he saw a dark woman with fuzzy black hair in colourful clothes. He felt enchanted. It was a daemon. "You must be Agatha Wilson," he greeted.
"And you must be Thomas Clairmont," Agatha offered her hand and he shook it gently. "Thank you so much for allowing my family to stay here,"
"It's no trouble at all. They're welcome to stay here for as long as they need," Thomas led her down the hallways where her son's and Sophie's happy faces brightened as she appeared in their presence. She hugged and kissed both of them before Thomas invited her to sit down. He poured her tea.
"I hope your trip from Venice wasn't uncomfortable," he said.
"It wasn't at all. But much enrolled at that last meeting," she said gravely. "What has happened to your father and Diana Bishop?"
"They had planned to time walk," Thomas answered. "To a place, no one can find them,"
Agatha smiled proudly. "Then they will be safe from the Congregation,"
"I pray that they have already reached safety,"
"Mum, we thought perhaps you'd like to meet our friend Aurora," Nate spoke up to his mother.
Agatha looked at him. She looked a little serious. "I would indeed. I've been experiencing uncanny premonitions about a creature. And I had a feeling it was connected to you two,"
"She is our closest friend. She is not a danger at all," Sophie stood up.
"I know she is not. But I have a feeling in my heart that she is in grave danger," Agatha spoke regrettably, not wanting to scare her family.
"Then I will call her and Marcus over," Thomas picked up his phone and rung.
That's the first half of episode nine. I hope you all enjoyed it. Get ready for the next one. See you all soon.
