As the train slowly came to a stop, the sun's rays seemed to sneak into the cabin where the team only began to stir. Passengers in other cabins stood immediately, rushing to the door in eagerness to their next destination. Shadow felt a rare feeling of dread as his group made their way to join the departing passengers.
"Morning sunshine…Ready to solve the mystery and head home?"
Shadow only half nodded at his blue companion, his eyes fixated on the passenger in front of him.
His focus on the back of the passenger's head was only momentarily interrupted by princess Blaze, who was fighting her way to the front of the line. She merely muttered a quick 'excuse me' as she pushed in front of him to explain to the conductor that his group was with her.
Good.
He sighed in relief, earning a disappointed look from Sonic.
As she walked off the train, a myriad of other passengers, her subjects, swarmed her with greetings, gratitude and adoration. Shadow stifled the smile creeping on his lips. If the royal family didn't believe in her, at least her subjects did.
"The ruins aren't far from here, though I'll warn you the path isn't smooth. Please watch your step!" Blaze addressed the team, turning on her heel and heading to a forest near the train station.
The dense forest path was lined with towering trees and a canopy so thick that only slivers of sunlight pierced through. The air was filled with the chirping of birds and the distant sound of water flowing. The humidity instantly hit the team, like opening a gym sauna.
"Ooof, I did not dress for this!" Amy gasped, pulling on her collar.
Blaze chuckled and turned to face her with a reassuring smile. "Shouldn't be much longer now…"
"You said that forever ago!" Sonic complained, wiping off the sweat that was appearing on his arms.
The underbrush grew thicker, hindering their pace as they delved deeper into the untamed wilderness. Tails, scanning the environment with a handheld device, motioned them to a barely discernible path veiled by hanging vines. "The energy readings are off the scale this way," he announced, pushing forward with a mix of trepidation and intrigue.
The foliage finally gave way to a clearing, where the ruins stood in silent testament to a bygone era. Towering spires lay crumbled and overgrown with ivy, their once grand facades now marred by the relentless march of time. The sight was hauntingly beautiful, the air heavy with the scent of moss and ancient stone.
"It's gorgeous," Amy whispered, the earlier discomfort forgotten as she gazed up at the towering remnants.
Blaze nodded solemnly. "These are the Ruins of Algoria, previous home to the Sol emeralds. Remember, these ruins are sacred. We must show respect and tread lightly."
The group stood at the edge of history, each lost in contemplation of the countless stories held within the decaying walls. Sonic, whose restlessness was a constant, was the first to move, stepping cautiously on the fractured cobblestone.
Tails in particular was looking through every nook and cranny in awe, while Rouge folded her arms, bored with the crumbling temple.
Knuckles felt his hair bristle, his ears twitching at the rustle of every leaf. "There is a strong presence of chaos emeralds here..."
Sonic looked at his friend with concern and kept walking. The team eventually made their way into the main chamber, where Blaze pointed out the altar that once held the sol emeralds. Knuckles was practically holding his head at this point "Ugh…its right here…" He mumbled. Rouge uncrossed her arms, worried. She walked towards the echidna and placed her hands on his shoulder.
Shadow narrowed his eyes and took out his own emerald, which was now blinking like crazy. "Hes right…" He responded, barely above a whisper.
The team dispersed into the room, searching for the source of the energy. Tails huffed in frustration as his tracking device was no longer working. Blaze, unable to detect or feel this chaos energy, looked around at her friends, feeling helpless. She sighed and walked up to the altar to clear her mind, but was surprised when she looked down at the dusty surface.
It was a small, maybe insignificant detail. But she had visited this site countless times during her youth. Sometimes with her parents. Definitely recently with Leo during her training. She remembered every single time that the altar's surface was severely damaged, with burn marks from an attack years ago. This time the altar seemed…untouched.
The feline took a step back, a strange feeling now creeping up her neck. As her friends frantically searched for the source of the energy, she began walking through the room, trying to rack her memory of how this room should look.
She saw small details that didn't seem right at every corner…A mural she had admired many times as a child had colors she didn't remember, and the characters within them were…off. There were marks where there shouldn't be, clean walls that were once scratched. She felt her breath quicken. Something was very wrong with this room.
She stood still and closed her eyes, trying desperately to tap into her pyrokinetic abilities, trying to sense the energies of the room…
A dark, ancient aura seemed to slam into her mind and she gasped for breath, unaware she had been holding it this entire time.
They were not alone.
"Show yourself!" Blaze growled, staring up at seemingly nothing. The others, startled by her sudden outburst, turned to look at her with quizzical eyes. There was a short silence before Sonic approached her. "Blaze…?"
She clenched her fist, never once having her eyes dart away from the ceiling. "This room…something isn't right…"
Before Sonic could argue with her, a cold wind suddenly blew through the chamber, extinguishing the torches and plunging the room into darkness. The eerie silence threatened to crush the group. From the shadows emerged a sultry voice, echoing through the chamber, "Very perceptive, Princess Blaze."
A soft purring laughter followed, and then slowly, the room illuminated once again. But this time, from a mysterious, shimmering orb that floated in the center of the room. Around it, a few Chaos Emeralds levitated, their glow pulsating in sync with the orb.
From behind the orb, a dark silhouette appeared. As it came into the light, the figure was revealed to be a tall, slender cat with luxurious dark purple fur and glowing blue eyes. Her robes seemed ancient, though as regal as Anubis himself. Her gaze and the air of malevolence she exuded made it clear she was not to be trifled with.
Blaze stared at the feline, her fists clenching at the sight of her. What made her even more uncomfortable was that the evil witch seemed oddly familiar.
She snickered, holding her chin in adoration of the princess. "What's wrong, princess? Don't recognize me? Well. A shame. You can call me…Mirage."
"We can call you done with!" Knuckles charged at the feline but found himself punching the wall, her figure suddenly disappearing and reappearing on the other side of the room.
"Ah yes, the guardian of the master emerald…I wonder, guardian, if you had been doing your job, If I would have these emeralds in the first place…?"
Knuckles growled and started to run towards her when Rouge grabbed him, trying to save the stubborn echidna from getting himself hurt.
Sonic zipped towards Rouge, helping her grab onto his hot headed friend. "What do you want with the emeralds, Mirage?"
The evil feline sighed and stroked her orb, letting the mirage of the room around them slowly fade away. In place of the room Blaze knew for so many years stood what looked to be a summoning ground. The pedestal where the sol emeralds once were was ruined, only an empty glass container in its place.
"I want many things, hero. But first and foremost…" Mirage licked her lips and sharp teeth, letting her sinister eyes fall on Blaze, who had been staring shocked at her the entire time. "...I want revenge."
Suddenly, Mirage launched a barrage of daggers aimed at Blaze's legs. As she stared in stunned disbelief, Shadow swiftly countered with a series of chaos spears, deflecting most daggers. However, one grazed Blaze's ankle. In a heartbeat, Shadow positioned himself protectively before her, fixing Mirage with a defiant glare.
The evil cat felt a smirk curl on her face, though she backed down after sensing his power. She clicked her tongue in annoyance, her posture exuding an eerie confidence. "You're so quick to jump to her defense," Mirage sneered, her eyes locked onto Blaze's, "but do you truly know your beloved princess?"
Blaze winced, the pain from her ankle shooting up her leg. However, her determination remained. "Whatever past we shared, Mirage, it's over. Who are you? Why are you doing this?"
Mirage laughed, a chilling sound that echoed through the chamber. "The past is never truly over, dear Blaze. And as for why? Let's just say there are some grudges that time cannot heal."
"Enough!" Shadow cried, now flexing his glove, ready to make quick work of the cat.
Mirage scowled and raised her orb, not yet ready to face them all at her current level.
"We'll have our chance to see about that," she started, her vengeful eyes landing on Blaze once again "And next time, dear sister… you'll be mine."
The room contorted as Mirage ensnared each team member in illusions tailored to their darkest fears, creating distinct experiences for each. Overwhelmed by Mirage's revelations, Blaze watched in horror as her comrades were trapped within their own minds, their bodies falling to the ground and their eyes white. Yet, possibly due to her pyrokinesis, she remained immune.
Blaze frantically ran to each one of her friends, trying desperately to pull them out of their personal hell, while Mirage disappeared.
As Shadow's vision cleared, he found himself no longer within the confines of the ruins, but standing in a brightly lit corridor, the sterile smell of antiseptics assaulting his senses. It was the Space Colony ARK, a place etched deeply in his memory. Panic rose within him as he recognized the environment—this was not where he was meant to be.
"Shadow! You came back."
The voice was heartbreakingly familiar. One that visited him in his dreams night after night. Maria stood there, just as he remembered. Her eyes searched for him with a hope and wonder he hadn't seen in decades.
"Maria, I-" He began, but she cut him off, her voice a mixture of sorrow and anger.
"You want to leave…Don't you?"
He could only stare back, unsure of what to say.
"You promised you'd never forget, Shadow. But you moved on. You're fighting for them now, living a life while I… I remain here."
Her words cut through him sharper than any weapon. This was his torment, his heartache made manifest. The illusion crafted by Mirage was cruel, forcing him to relive his most painful memory—a reminder of a promise he felt he had not kept.
"Maria, I never forgot you. Everything I did…that I do, is to honor your memory, to fulfill your wish for a better world!" Shadow pleaded, his voice echoing in the empty space.
Tears shimmered in Maria's eyes, a silent testament to the sadness of a life cut tragically short. "Then why does it feel like I'm the one who's been left behind in the darkness, Shadow? Why does it feel like you're slipping away?"
Shadow's emotions churned as he looked upon Maria's tear-streaked face, his heart wrenching with each word she spoke. The illusion was a venomous concoction, meant to paralyze him with guilt and grief.
"You find happiness now, don't you? With your new companions… maybe, with her?" Maria's voice broke, her accusation laced with an unbearable sadness. "Do I fade away with your sorrow, Shadow? Is that my legacy to you?"
Shadow's resolve began to waver, the illusion preying on his deepest insecurities. The thought of betraying Maria's memory by finding any semblance of happiness was a heavy chain around his neck.
"I…I don't know," he admitted, the words a mere whisper. "I'm fighting to protect, to fulfill your wish. But should I shun the light that comes into my life? Is it wrong to not dwell in the shadows of the past?"
Maria's form took a step closer, her hand reaching out as if to touch him, a gesture he knew would never connect. "But if you let go of the pain, do you let go of me, Shadow?"
In the throes of the illusion's corrosive embrace, Shadow's body began to betray him. The walls of the ARK started to blur and warp, the air turning thick with an invisible, smothering heat. His breath became labored, each gasp an act of defiance against the smoke rushing into his lungs. The surroundings bled into a haze of distortion, reality peeling away like burning paper edges, revealing a formless void beneath.
"Wake up, Shadow. Please..."
Blaze's strained voice pierced through the miasma as Shadow's consciousness clawed back to reality. He blinked away the illusion, focusing on the anxious faces surrounding him. Sonic's voice was a distant echo, but it grew clearer as Shadow anchored himself to the present.
Blaze knelt, her body a canvas of exhaustion, flames dancing in her eyes—a reflection of her sheer force of will. The air crackled with the remnants of her psychic efforts, an aura of blue that hummed with dissipating energy.
"He's awake, Blaze! That's the last one!" Sonic shouted, hope threading his urgent tone.
Almost as if a light switch was flipped, Blaze stopped instantly and let out a breath. Emanating her natural glow and attempting to stand, though her body thought otherwise.
"Good…" She whispered, a response more reflex than conscious thought as a single drop of blood ran down her nose, a stark contrast to her fur.
"Blaze…You're bleeding. Blaze? BLAZE!"
The call came too late; she collapsed, the darkness claiming her vision - a gentle but insistent tide.
