Yu-gi-oh/RWBY Chapter 8
The Legacy of The Little Guy
Whitley ran over to Weiss, hugging her in the hall. "Are you okay? Were you hurt?" were but a sample of the many questions Whitley asked his sister, who kept insisting that she was fine, but it didn't stop him from worrying. Ruby looked on, relieved that at least their troubles were over for now. Roman also looked on, thinking of how best to use this opportunity.
Blake sat in one of the waiting rooms, having witnessed the duel through the television on the wall. Hazel, who sat opposite her, said "She seems like a good kid. Wonder what Fall has planned for her." This caught Blake's attention. "I've been meaning to ask. I can guess why some of the others are here, either because they're working for Cinder or have one of these" Blake showed her mark. "But you don't seem to fit in either category. Why are you here?"
Hazel sighed, his face unreadable by Blake. After a few seconds, he began. "I come from a small village far away. The political landscape in that area has been...difficult, to say the least." Hazel took a drink from his cup before resuming. "Fall promised to offer financial aid to my village in exchange for my attendance. It was an offer I couldn't refuse." Blake lowered her eyes, thinking of all the hardships she and everyone in Satellite had suffered, and could only imagine what he had to go through. "We're facing each other next. May the best little guy win." She offered her cup to his for a toast. Hazel smiled and accepted the toast.
"EVERYBODY LISTEN! THE SEMIFINALS HAVE BEGUN! OUR FIRST MATCH IS BETWEEN BLAKE BELLADONNA AND HAZEL RAINART!"
The two moved their duel runners to the starting line. Both looked to each other with a smile. This would be a wonderful time.
"RIDING DUEL, ACCELERATION!"
They are off, with Hazel eventually pulling out in front. "I'll go first. I draw. I summon Spell Reactor – RE" (Level 3/1200) "and set 3 cards. Your turn." Blake drew to start her turn, and though about how best to approach this (Blake 0-1, Hazel 0-1). Now that he has Spell Reactor on the field, spells are a no-go. I'll have to take that one out first if I want to stay ahead. "I summon Knight of Night in attack mode." A knight clad in black armor appeared, riding a black horse alongside Blake (Level 4/2000). "In response, I'll activate my face-down: Hidden Soldiers." Hazel responded. "Since you summoned a monster, I get to summon a level 4 or lower Dark monster from my hand. I summon Trap Reactor – Y FI!" (Level 4/800)
Crap, Blake thought. He's getting closer and closer to getting out his ace monster. I've got to put a stop to this right now. "Knight of Night requires me to banish a monster I control or in my hand before I can attack with it." With that, she banished a monster from her hand. "Battle! Knight of Night, destroy Trap Reactor – Y FI with Night Slash." The knight began its charge towards Trap Reactor. It lunges its spear through the machine's core, causing an explosion. "I activate my second face-down: Fake Explosion." The smoke clears, revealing Trap Reactor to be unscathed.
As Hazel's life points drop to 2800, he explained "This prevents Trap Reactor from being destroyed, and lets me summon Summon Reactor afterwards." The third machine showed itself. (Level 5/2000) No. He's already-"And then I activate my final face-down, Delta Reactor, to send Summon Reactor, Trap Reactor, and Spell Reactor to the graveyard to special summon Flying Fortress – SKY FIRE!" The three broke apart, before reassembling into SKY FIRE. "Blake, I can't afford to lose. There's too much at stake. This is your end."
"SURPRISE TWIST! HAZEL HAS BROUGHT OUT HIS BEST MONSTER IN AN INSTANT! WHAT WILL BLAKE DO?"
"I set one card and end my turn. This activates the effect of my banished D/D Scout Plane. If it's banished, it can special summon itself in attack mode during the end phase." A starry portal appears, revealing a giant eye with several mechanical attachments (Level 2/800). "I use SKY FIRE's second effect. Once per each of your turns, if you summon a monster or set a card, I can destroy that monster and deal 800 damage to you." A bomb from the chest of SKY FIRE releases and flies towards Scout Plane, blasting it away, (Blake 4000-3200)
"Think you can get around SKY FIRE's ability by doing both? I'll show you just how wrong you are. I draw!" (Blake 1-2, Hazel 1-2). "I activate SKY FIRE's ability. By discarding one card, I can destroy one of yours. Destroy that face-down." Another bomb releases, this time aimed for Blake's face-down card. This earns a grin from Blake. "You fell for it. My face-down was Shadow Snare. When it's destroyed, it can bring out one Dark monster from my hand with less than 1000 attack. I choose my Black Cat." A small black cat appears besides Blake (Level 1/100). "SKY FIRE, attack Knight of Night with Sharp Shooting!" A purple energy beam emerges from the cockpit to shatter the knight, with Blake barely able to hang on (Blake 3200-2200) (Blake 2-1). "I end my turn."
"NOT GOOD FOR BLAKE! SHE'S ALMOST SPIRALED OUT OF CONTROL, AND UNLESS SHE CAN GROUND THAT SKY FIRE, SHE'LL BE SENT HOME PACKING!"
Blake draws, (Blake 1-2, Hazel 2-3). Everything is going to hang on this, Blake thought. "I summon one monster face-down." "SKY FIRE, take her monster out!" Yet another bomb destroys the face-down monster, a Kuriboh (Blake 2200-1400). Blake smiles. "Now I can use Black Cat's ability safely. I can banish it until the end of the turn to draw one card. If that card is a monster, I can summon it." The cat vanishes into a black portal which places itself on top of Blake's deck. "Seriously? You're betting this entire duel on a single draw?" Blake, looking up at where Ruby is sitting, answers "It's worth a shot." Everyone's breath is baited as Blake pulls her hand ever closer to the deck. Time seems to stand still, no-one dares to even breathe.
"Really, for me?"
"Yeah! I want you to have it, so you can beat Yang and make her come back!"
"That's very sweet of you. I'll make sure to use it when I'm there."
Blake draws, and when she sees what she drew, a thought occurs to her. Maybe Ruby is on to something with her strategy. "I summon Gnawing Shadow!" A shadow emerges from Shadow Go, with the mouth of the shadow growing and baring teeth (Level 2/0). "Then, if I've normal summoned a monster, I can special summon Turbo Booster from my hand." A small yellow robot with cannons for hands flies in (Level 1/0). "Go, Gnawing Shadow! Attack SKY FIRE!" "Are you mad? With SKY FIRE's attack points, that's suicide!" Hazel asks, unsure what Blake is planning. Blake answers "While Gnawing shadow is attacking, it won't be destroyed and I won't take damage." The shadow starts rustling through the insides of SKY FIRE, causing wires to split and sparks to fly. "Then, if it attacked a level 5 or higher monster, you take damage equal to that monster's level times 300." The shadow emerges from SKY FIRE with several bits of spare parts sticking out of its mouth. The contents are quickly ejected towards Hazel (Hazel 4000-1600).
"Then, I activate Turbo Booster's effect. Since SKY FIRE has battled one of my monsters this turn, I can tribute Turbo Booster to destroy it." Gnawing Shadow places itself between Turbo Booster's cannons as the cannons release a whirring sound. Seconds after, Gnawing Shadow is fired off like a bullet and plows a hole through SKY FIRE's center, causing it to crash and explode in a blaze of glory.
Rally couldn't be held down by any of the others there. He could almost fly with the joy in his body, seeing Blake not only use his monster, but use it to take down such an impressive monster. His smile was a mile long and his heart beat faster than the engine of a locomotive. Thank you, Blake.
Thank you, Rally. "I end my turn. At this time, Black Cat returns." As Turbo Booster fades away, Black Cat returns, this time crouching to take a nap. (200)
"EXPLOSIVE! WITH JUST 2 SMALL MONSTERS, BLAKE HAS MANAGED TO TAKE DOWN THE INTIMIDATING FLYING FORTRESS – SKY FIRE! BUT THE GAME IS STILL ON! HOW WILL HAZEL MAKE A COMEBACK?"
Hazel draws his card, his face a grimace the whole time (Blake 2-3, Hazel 3-4). He sets his eyes on the card that Neo gave him earlier, and, seeing as he has no other options, states "I set one card face-down, and end my turn."
"I draw." (Blake 3-4, Hazel 4-5). "I banish my Black Cat again to draw a card." No luck. A spell. "I then tribute my Gnawing Shadow to summon my Shadow Predator." The Gnawing Shadow falls into a portal only for a large shadow of a man in a coat to appear with a hook and chain (Level 5/2100). "You're finished. Shadow Predator, attack directly!" The shadow winds up the chain and throws it, with the hook aimed for Hazel. "I activate my face-down, Chariot Pile!" With this, two spikes appear on Hazel's duel runner, one on each side. "With this, I can negate one of your direct attacks each turn." The hook is pulled towards one of the spikes and bounces off. Blake feels a little disappointed that she couldn't end the duel right here, but it didn't matter. "I end my turn. Black Cat returns again."
Hazel draws again (Blake 4-5, Hazel 5-6). "I activate the other effect of Chariot Pile. During my turn, I can deal 800 damage to you. You can tribute one monster to negate this effect." Hazel pulls his duel runner closer, clearly intending to ram into Blake. Blake, after thinking it over, says nothing and lets the spikes connect (Blake 1400-600). "How brave of you. But it won't save you. I summon Black Salvo." A bomb with a nasty looking face appears (Level 3/100). "When Black Salvo is summoned, I can resurrect a level 4 Dark machine from my graveyard in defense mode with its effects negated. Return, Trap Reactor – Y FI!" The monster from earlier is resurrected.
"I tune my level 4 Trap Reactor – Y FI with my level 3 Black Salvo. Appear, Dark Strike Fighter!" A machine resembling a cross between a fighter jet and a man appears (Level 7/2600). "Dark Strike Fighter, attack her Shadow Predator." The fighter jet flies towards Shadow Predator and decks it faster than the shadow can react (Blake 600-100). "I should mention. Dark Strike Fighter can forgo an attack to tribute another monster and deal 200 damage to you for every level that monster has. So even without Chariot Pile, I will still win next turn."
Blake, hesitating for the second time this duel, draws what again could be her last draw (Blake 5-6, Hazel 6-7). "I normal summon the tuner monster Doppelshade in attack mode." A mist pulls off of Blake before forming into a shadowy duplicate of her, complete with a second Shadow Go (Level 3/200). "When I normal summon Doppelshade, if you control a monster, I can summon a Doppel token." The same process that occurred on Blake now occurs to Doppelshade, creating a third Blake (Level 3/200). "I tune my level 3 Doppel token and my level 1 Black Cat with my level 3 Doppelshade. Entrancing in what you show and mastering in what you don't. Synchro summon! Shadow Bedlah!" A woman in middle-eastern garb appears, spinning and dancing all the while (Level 7/2300). "I activate her ability. Once per turn, I can take control of one monster you control, but that monster can't attack directly." Shadow Bedlah turns to Dark Strike Fighter and focuses her dance on it. The monster can't help but be pulled towards her, and switches to Hazel's side.
"I then activate Dark Strike Fighter's effect to tribute my Shadow Bedlah and deal 1400 damage to you." Dark Strike Fighter grabs Shadow Bedlah who is converted into a ball of black energy. The machine hurls the ball of energy straight at Hazel (Hazel 1600-200). He brushes the dust off his shoulder. "Too little, too late. Dark Strike Fighter will return to me at the end of the turn and you'll have nothing to hide behind. I still win." "Not when I activate my speed spell – Final Night! It banishes every last Dark monster from my graveyard and deals 100 damage to you for each." Gnawing Shadow, Black Cat, D/D Scout Plane, Shadow Bedlah, Knight of Night, Doppelshade, Kuriboh, and Shadow Predator all appear to swarm on Hazel, who desperately tries to fight them off (Hazel 200-0).
"SPECTACULAR! A LAST MINUTE VICTORY FROM BLAKE BELLADONNA, WHO HAS EARNED HER SPOT AT THE FINALS! TUNE IN NEXT TIME TO SEE WHO WILL MOVE ON TO CHALLENGE HER!"
Since everyone was so focused on Blake, either cheering her on or still booing the "Satellite scum", that they didn't notice that the spikes on Hazel's duel runner hadn't disappeared like all the other cards had. He stopped near the announcer and ran up to him, scaring the poor announcer who dropped the microphone and ran. Hazel picked up the microphone from the ground "Everyone, I entered this tournament for one reason. But it's not what you think it is. I'm here to expose Cinder Fall for what she's done. To my village." He fishes out a remote from his pocket and points it at one of the cameras before pressing a button. Images of a valley with some buildings and smoke appear. "Cinder Fall belongs to a group known as Iliaster. They are trying to exploit a prophecy involving the end of the world. My village knew of that prophecy. To keep the truth hidden, they burned it to the ground, with countless paying the price!"
The crowd was taken aback with shock. Hazel dropped the microphone and the remote before hopping back on the duel runner. He started it back up and started gathering up speed. No, is he gonna… Blake didn't dare hesitate. After Hazel had launched his duel runner into the air, headed for the podium where Cinder, Neo, and Yang were, Blake's own duel runner t-boned it, causing the desired effect of knocking him off course. However, one of the spikes is knocked off from the collision and flies towards Hazel's intended target.
Neo can't understand why Cinder isn't running for her life. Sure, Neo isn't running, either, but that's because she's frozen in fear. What's Cinder doing? Cinder simply raises her hand up, ready to catch the spike. Once it breaks through the window, it does seem to stop at Cinder's hand, though not without thrashing and spinning all the while. Neo falls to the ground, having fainted from the near-death experience. Yang stops her dash to the other side of the room to look at Cinder's hand, wondering how this was possible. Curiously, where flesh and blood should have been, the clothing from the sleeve has been torn from the force of the impact to reveal the arm to be metallic. Cinder looks over at Yang. "Surprised? I had an accident years ago. For personal reasons, that's all I can say on the matter."
Down on the raceway, Hazel gets out of the wreckage and pulls Blake out as well, only to force her to the ground. "Why? Why did you stop me? You know what she's done! To me! To you!" he shouts, his voice rough. "Believe me, I want her dead just as much as you. But killing her won't solve this. We have to stop her plan, and make her repay the damage she's done. And she can't do that if she's dead." Hazel lets go of Blake and lets out a primal cry of agony and anguish.
