Yu-gi-oh/RWBY Chapter 9

Digging up the Past

The officers, cautious about arresting a tower of a man like Hazel, waited until plenty of reinforcements to arrive. There was little need, as he offered no resistance to his arrest. Cinder moved her left arm behind her before she walked towards the hole that the spike made through the window, with many drones watching and broadcasting her reaction. "I would like you all to know that despite Hazel's incredulous allegations, I will do everything in my power to protect you all. Even if it costs me my life." This got the crowd to applaud her bravery, and Roman to roll his eyes that they bought that.

Roman turned his gaze over to Ruby, who seemed lost in her own thoughts. "Hey, little red, what's wrong?" He asked, as though he didn't already know the answer. Ruby answered "I keep thinking about the guy I dueled earlier. I really hurt him. What if I do something like that again?" Roman put his hand on her shoulder. "Don't worry about it. They all know what they signed up for. And as for these rubes," Roman gestured towards the crowd. "That's what we're here for in the first place. To break the stigma around psychic duelists like us." Ruby lowered her shoulders in a slump. "It feels like I'm just making it worse." "Nonsense. I know that you can show everyone the perfect little girl I met all those years ago. Don't you remember?"

Ruby's mind peered back into the past, when she was first enrolled into Arcadia, and when she met Roman for the first time. He was the first person who accepted her for who she was. "How could I forget?" "Make me proud, and remember. You're not the Black Rose Witch. You're Ruby Rose." Ruby wiped a tear away from her face and hugged Roman before setting off to prepare for the next match.

"EVERYBODY LISTEN!" IT'S TIME FOR THE LAST ROUND OF THE SEMIFINALS! WHO WILL GO ON TO FACE BLAKE BELLADONNA IN THE FINALS? RUBY ROSE OR KODA KINOMIYA?"

Ruby walked into the arena with more than a little nervousness. The crowd seemed to be largely cheering, but she could still hear a boo or a jeer here and there. She shook her head. Don't let them get to you. This is why you're here. Her opponent, Koda, was not exactly what she was expecting. With his suit and glasses, he looked like he belonged in an office rather than a tournament. From what she heard from gossip the days before, he was known as the "Duel Profiler", capable of getting inside his opponent's head and reading their strategies before they even made them. She wasn't sure if she believed those rumors.

"I draw." Koda says. "I activate the spell Mind Monster. This lets me declare a name, and if there's a monster with that name in your extra deck, you'll take damage equal to half that monster's attack. So tell me, do you happen to have Crescent Rose Dragon?" Ruby reveals the monster and a beam hits her (4000-2800). Well, that's to be expected. I do tend to overuse that one. "That's to be expected from a monster like you. I set one monster and two cards face-down and end my turn."

Ruby drew her card, reminding herself not to go overboard like she did last duel. "I summon Petal Shooter." (Level 4/1800). "Petal Shooter, attack his face-down." The monster aims his gun at the face-down and fires an energy bullet. The face-down monster is revealed to be Card Trooper (Level 3/400) before it is destroyed. "Since you so viciously destroyed my Card Trooper, I can draw 1 card." Koda explains as he does so. "I place one card face-down and end my turn." Ruby states, trying to hold back her frustration. This guy was starting to get on her nerves.

"I draw. I summon Warm Worm in attack position." A huge worm with a fiery part on its head appears (Level 3/600). "I then activate my face-down Chain Destruction. This will not only destroy the Warm Worm on my field, but any in my hand or deck." Two more worms appeared only to blow up along with the original. Why did he destroy his own monsters? Ruby wondered. "This activates their effect, each sending 3 cards from the top of your deck to the graveyard." Ruby, slightly annoyed, sent 9 cards from her deck to the graveyard."I then activate my other face-down, Loop of Destruction." A metal loop with bits of fire coming out appeared. "Once per turn, if a monster is destroyed by a card effect, I can destroy one monster on the field and deal 500 damage to both of us." A ball of fire appeared in the loop and blasted Petal Shooter. (Ruby 4000-3500) (Koda 4000-3500). "I set two cards face-down and end my turn."

"I draw." Ruby suspected that Koda was waiting for her to summon a monster in order to punish her again, and checked her graveyard. Time to turn the tables. "I summon Seed of Flame." A bush with legs that had fire spouting from the top sprouted out of the ground (Level 3/1600). As she suspected, Koda responded "I activate Ojama Trio. This will summon three Ojama tokens to your field." Three of the ugliest slimes that Ruby had ever seen suddenly appeared next to Seed of Flame (Level 2/1000). "I then activate my Needle Ceiling. If there are 4 or more face-up monsters, on the field, all face-up monsters are destroyed." A large block with spikes on the bottom materialized above the 4 monsters before crushing them all. "This activates the effects of all three Ojama tokens, dealing 300 damage each." (Ruby 3500-2600). "I'll counter with Seed of Flame's effect. You're not the only one who can play off destruction. When Seed of Flame is destroyed, not only do I get to bring back a level 4 or lower plant from my graveyard, but you get a seed token. Return, Thorn Lancer!" A knight carrying a large lance covered in branches and thorns rose from the graveyard (Level 4/1700), while a small seed appeared on Koda's field (Level 1/0). Alright, I got this in the bag. Now I just need to activate my Raging Mad Plants to increase Thorn Lancer's power and attack for game.

Koda, after receiving a message from the device in his ear, adjusted his glasses. "You would know plenty about destruction, wouldn't you? That's what you've caused your whole life. From this duel to poor Mr Delauncebeaux to even your own father." Ruby's eyes widened. "Shut up." "No wonder he never sees you. I would be scared too if you were my daughter. "Shut up. "And that's without getting into your mother-" "SHUT UP!" Ruby screamed. Her hair started to lift up, and a breeze started to lift up around her. Koda, all the meanwhile, wasn't worried. He had his Loop of Destruction and his Guilt Mirror in hand. If he would take 2000 or more battle damage, he could simply discard it to redirect the damage to Ruby instead. This was the easiest money he had ever been paid.

Up in Cinder's stage, Yang got up and clenched her fist. She wanted to tear this jerk a new one. That was way too low.

Ruby, blinded by her anger, abandoned her previous strategy. That would have been too quick for someone like him. He needed to suffer. "Thorn Lancer, attack his seed token! Make him hurt!" Thorn Lancer ran the seed through, pushing Koda back a little (Koda 3500-1800). You little insect! This wasn't how this was supposed to go! "I then activate my face-down, Berserk Poison, which equips to Thorn Lancer!" A dark aura surrounds the knight, and poison drips from his lance. "By paying 1000 life points, my Thorn Lancer can attack again!" (Ruby 2600-1600) Thorn Lancer attacks Koda, who only barely manages to avoid being stabbed (Koda 1800-100). "I use Berserk Poison's effect one last time! Next time, when I tell you to shut up, YOU SHUT THE FUCK UP!" (Ruby 1600-600). Thorn Lancer pushed his lance forward, and a massive wave of energy shot forth from it. The wave pushed Koda off the arena and onto the wall, which left a crack where Koda landed before he fell to the ground. (Koda 100-0)

Once Ruby calmed down, she fell to her knees, horrified as it settled in what she had just done. Medical personnel rushed to Koda, carrying him off in a hurry. Ruby took in every harsh word from the crowd. "Murderer!" "Witch!" "Freak!" Roman silently entered the stage and carried off Ruby who held back tears.

Years ago…

"You promised, Daddy!" a young Ruby yelled at her father, Taiyang, a blond man in a suit. "I'm sorry, Ruby. But it'll only be for a few minutes-" "You liar! You're never here! It's so lonely here without mom! If you're not going to be here, then just go away!" As Ruby ranted and threw a tantrum, pieces of furniture around the room started to be picked up and thrown around the room. A stray lamp hit Taiyang on the back of the head and he fell over. When Ruby saw this, the floating objects slowed to a standstill and fell down as she ran over. "Daddy? Daddy? Are you okay?" Yang, near the door, could only look on.
