Chapter 2

"Lucky…Lucky?" said Jason as his daughter didn't realize it was her turn for the second time. Lucky jumped and looked down at the board.

"Sorry," she said quickly, "Um, who's turn is it?"

"It's yours," said Ashley

Lucky picked up the dice to roll but her dad stopped her gently.

"First things first," he said gently, "what has you got so distracted that you can't keep your mind on the game?"

Lucky sighed

"Daddy, there's something I need to tell you," she said, "Regulus just got a new go-kart. He was showing it off at the camp earlier. He's been saving up for one but we didn't think he was anywhere close to having enough money to buy one."

"Really," said Jason, "Interesting coincidence!"

"I know," said Lucky, "What did the go-kart that was stolen look like? Do you know?"

"All he told me was that it was a Street-Rod 2500xl and that it runs for about $4000." Replied Jason, "I guess it's considered top of the line."

"Then there is no way that Regulus could have gotten it for just $400," said Lucky

"No," said Ashley, "A discount like that would be a major red flag!"

"Yeah," said Jason, "It's the kind of discount that a person gives you when they're trying to get rid of stolen property in a hurry!"

"I think I need to go back to the camp tomorrow and take a closer look at that go-kart," said Lucky, "just to make sure it's not the stolen one!"

"Okay," said Jason, "But what if it is the stolen go-kart, I know you like Regulus but?"

"If it is, Regulus or not, it's stolen property and I'll tell you Dad." Replied Lucky firmly.

"Good," said Jason, "And I'll tell you what I'll do, I will call Mr. Wilcox back and agree to investigate this matter for him. That way we'll have our bases covered."

Lucky nodded and threw her arms around her father.

"Thanks, Daddy." She smiled

The next day, about mid-morning, Lucky arrived at the Moondance clan camp and headed for the big top where she knew that Regulus would be practicing his act.

When she entered the big top, the first people she met were Evie, Risa and Matt. Matt had proven himself very good at archery trick shots. So, Evie had convinced her dad to let her and Matt work up a trick shot act for the Wandering Star Circus's special spring break show.

"Hey, Lucky," said Risa, "What's up?"

"Hi guys," she said, "I need to see Regulus, it's important."

"He's over there practicing on the trampoline," said Evie nodding to the far ring.

"Thanks," Lucky said. it was at this point that Evie heard the worry in Lucky's voice.

"Lucky what's wrong," she asked

"Come on," said Lucky motioning them to come with her, "I'll fill you in while we wait for Regulus to finish."

"This sounds bad." Said Matt

"That's what I'm afraid of," said Lucky

She explained everything she had found out since yesterday about the robberies and the stolen go-kart. By the time she was done her friends were nodding in understanding.

"I understand why she's worried," said Evie

"Yeah," said Risa, "We all know that Regulus can be a little impulsive sometimes."

"And as bad as he wanted a go-kart, he may have jumped at the deal he was offered without stopping to think." Said Matt

"If it is the stolen go-kart which we don't even know for sure yet." Said Lucky. Just then Lucky's phone rang.

Her dad was on the other end when she answered.

"Hi Daddy," she said, "What's up?"

As she listened, she face-palmed with her free hand.

"That's all we need," she groaned, "Thanks for warning me, Daddy!"

With that she hung up.

"Now what's wrong?" asked Matt

"Things just went from bad to worse," said Lucky, "My Dad was hired by Mr. Wilcox, who runs the Bike and Skate, the shop the go-kart was stolen from."

"So what?" replied Risa, "He was probably hired to investigate the robberies."

"Yeah," he was," said Lucky, "But guess who Wilcox's assistant manager is."

"Who?" asked Evie

"Norville Cowlin," said Evie, "and he swears he saw Regulus driving the stolen go-kart on the logging road near Pine Hollow yesterday afternoon.

A collective groan went up from the group.

"Oh great," muttered Evie, "His dad hates the Romani and he's just as bad, he'll have the cops on us in no time!"

"My Dad knows that. That's why he called to warn me," said Lucky, "We can't wait for Regulus to stop. We have to talk to him now!"

Risa nodded and walked over to the Trampoline to get Regulus's attention, but just as she got there, the tent flap over the entrance, of the big top, was thrown open and in walked Norville Cowlin leading three police officers.

Rafael was there too.

"Officers," he was saying, "There has got to be some mistake."

"Yeah, and you made it!" sneered Norville he looked around until he spotted Regulus who had stopped his routine to see what was going on.

"That's him," said Norville pointing, "he's the one I saw driving the stolen go-kart!"
