All right, next chapter is up and about! Anyway, enjoy!
It was a long week, but finally, Saturday had arrived. Over at a crowded auditorium in Broadway, New York, people were getting in line, talking in excitement, and laughing amongst other things as they were filing in their seats, one by one, as they settled down, eagerly awaiting the presentation of the show. And near the entrance to the stage doors were three familiar faces (four, counting Porkchop).
"Well, this is it." Skeeter sighed nostalgically. "Man, it's been a long time since we've seen the Beats live, huh?"
Doug chuckled a bit. "Yeah, it certainly has. Thanks for coming with me, guys, even if it is just so you can get the seats at the concert."
Judy shrugged. "Eh, I'm a little off and on on the Beats, but seeing reunion concerts is something that catches my dramatic eye. Plus, I know you want to hear your green honey singing."
"Judy!" Doug blushed instantly.
"I'm just teasin'. I know you're going to be just fine." Judy chuckled a bit, giving him a thumbs-up.
"Y-yeah." Doug said, looking a bit unsure. After taking a few deep breaths, he followed his sister, friend and dog as they approached the seats their tickets got them for.
"Ah yeah! Front row!" Judy cheered as she already settled down in her seat, with Skeeter, Doug and Porkchop getting comfortable in theirs not too long afterwards. As they settled down, Doug couldn't help but wonder, how could Connie's voice get even better after the experiences she had with singing in her childhood. He already thought that Connie was a magnificent singer, but it had been years since his last encounter with her. All he could do was judge it for himself. Sure, the Beats were fun to watch again, but for Doug, it was to watch Connie sing her beautiful heart out.
Skeeter couldn't help but note the lovesick smile on his friend, before rolling his eyes and whispering to Judy, "He's got that look in his eyes again."
Judy smirked. "That's healthy. He's probably thinking about that girl he loves right now, getting ready..."
Backstage, in a dressing room, Connie had just finished dressing up, wearing a VERY lovely pink dress skirt with an extra large black shirt, both articles showing off the best parts of her as she wiggled her butt a bit. She then took a deep breath as she looked in the mirror.
"Okay, Connie... you can do this. You've been practicing this solo for a long time now. And best of all, Doug is out there, watching in the front row. Give it your all. And don't get nervous." Connie said to herself. "Think about the wonderful date that Doug will take you to after this concert is over..."
The more she repeated herself, the more sure she felt as she looked in the mirror, before looking towards a photograph, which depicted that of a younger Doug and younger Connie standing next to each other, each of them wearing cool glasses and playing instruments together. Connie gave a sigh as she looked over that photograph, remembering the good times that she shared with Doug, about how she let him join her band, even for the song contest during the time where she wanted to enter that music contest. Sure, there was the time where she was obsessed with music to a point where she thought she had to quit education to pursue the music career, but that was all in the past. Still, she was pretty thankful to people like the Beets and Doug to bring her out of that mindset.
But now, after all that education and earning her way to the top, it was just as she dreamed. She was going to be an opening act for the Beets, and she couldn't be more prouder of where she was now. She looked over at the photo of younger her and younger Doug again as she gave a smile. Even if he didn't know it, in a way, she had to thank Doug for getting her into music like the Beets. Learning to sing gave her a lot of confidence before and after losing weight. Sure, as she grew up, she gained a bit of the weight back, but she was proud of her body, and proud of her natural talent. And now that she and Doug were reconnecting with each other, there seemed to be a slight spark between the two, a spark that was light during a time the young man had his sights on Patti Mayonnaise... but now that Patti was married and Doug was single and looking, that spark seemed to be coming back.
"Miss Benge, we're ready for you. Be on in five!" One of the managers called as he knocked on the door.
"Y-yes sir!" Connie snapped out of her daze before gathering her guitar and heading out of the dressing room, but not before taking a deep breath, thinking about the one person she knew was going to be out there. With a smile, she walked out, guitar in hand, as she looked ready to play.
The lights dimmed down in the audience as everyone looked around, the seats being filled up. Doug in particular was looking rather excited as Judy grinned, saying, "Oh, I think it's starting!"
"Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Beats Reunion concert! They'll be coming out on stage to play for you, but before we do, an opening number will be played by an upcoming talent who we hope you enjoy. Please welcome, Connie Benge!" The announcer called as everyone moderately applauded.
All eyes turned to the stage as the lights dimmed down. Doug's mouth dropped open at the pretty sight of the girl standing before him. There she was, ready to play. The one known as Connie Benge. And the minute she strummed her guitar, she started to let out a combination of a beautiful and excited singing voice that could rival that of a goddess's voice.
For a mere moment, Doug wasn't listening to the whispering crowd or even focusing on anything else, but the voice and the words coming out of Connie's mouth, a natural talent rolling in. To Doug, Connie's talent for singing was just as beautiful as he remembered, if not moreso. He couldn't help but wonder just how he missed out on Connie during those years. Even then, he couldn't help but feel elated as Connie bobbed her head and continued playing and singing her beautiful tune to the crowd.
And even the crowd was getting into the tune as they were swaying along to the siren's call, some of them whispering how a 'thicc girl' like Connie had such a beautiful voice. But the more she sang, the more and more people were starting to get into it.
Skeeter couldn't help but smirk as he poked his elbow towards Doug's side. "Hey, man, I knew Connie had a great voice, but it really matured for a lot during those years."
Doug didn't say anything, but he was silently agreeing with his best friend. Judy could only sit back and observe while Porkchop pulled out a lighter and struck it, waving it around as everybody joined in with the dog's movements.
Connie opened her eyes for a brief moment as she was singing and saw the crowd doing the whole lighter wave. She noted Doug staring directly at her in the audience, before giving a big smile. Pretty soon, her song ended as she held out a slightly long note, for about ten seconds before closing her mouth, the audience erupting in cheers.
For that moment, for that brief moment, Doug was the first person to get up and applaud for her, followed by everyone else. For that mere moment, Connie felt like the best person on the stage.
She picked up the microphone and gave a giggle. "Thank you all. Thank you. And now, please welcome what you all came here to see... the Beats!"
Everybody erupted in cheers as Connie put the microphone down before heading offstage. As she did so, Doug sat back down (thanks to the help of Judy and Skeeter pulling him downwards) as he gave a smile.
Even though the concert lasted all but two hours, to Doug, it all seemed like a blur as he was waiting outside, holding a picnic basket in hand. Judy, Skeeter and Porkchop had already left some time ago, with the three wishing Doug a good luck in their own ways.
"Hey, Doug."
Doug's eyes lit up as he turned to see Connie, still in her black shirt, but now wearing her tight blue jeans, approaching with a smile on her face.
"Connie!" Doug smiled. "You were really great out there."
Connie giggled as she blushed. "I wasn't THAT great..."
"Believe me, you were. I mean, wow. I already knew you were a beautiful singer, but to hear your voice again after so long, I... wow, just wow." Doug said, a little air coming out from his last breath.
The green skinned girl giggled as she looked towards the young man with interest. "Well, I'm glad you enjoyed it. Shall we go?"
"Y-yeah, sure." Doug said as he put his hand towards Connie's, with the two heading out on their way to Central Park, to start their official date. Little did they know was that this date was about to change their lives...
And that's the third chapter done! How did you guys like it? Next time, we're going to get the extent of the date between Doug and Connie... what will happen between them? You'll just have to read on and find out! Anyway, read, review, criticize and suggest, everyone!
