Republic outpost, overrun! The Jedi have lost all contact with the clone security force stationed on the bleak, snow-covered planet of Orto Plutonia. Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker, and John Bertrand, accompanied by dignitaries from the nearby moon of Pantora are sent to investigate the disappearance of the clone troopers on the desolate and forbidding landscape...
The five LAAT Gunships land outside the base. John was the first to get off with Obi wan and Anakin as Obi-wan said, "And this is the planet's Tropical Zone." Making Anakin say, "It's not Tatooine, that's for sure." But John smiled and said, "True. But I've been in places colder than this so I'm doing ok." John then looked at the two clone commanders and said, "Nitro, Rex let's get a move on it. Have your men survey the area. Place as many sensor beacons as you can before dark." Nitro and Rex both nodded and had their men unload the gear as R2-D2 and C3-P0 got off the gunship. 3P0 asked R2 why the Republic wanted an outpost at the spot and R2 told him, "The Chairman of Orto Plutonia requested it."
"The Chairman of - oh! - Ortu Plutonia requested it? But why?" 3P0 asked for clarification. With the Jedi, the head Dignitary of the nearby moon of Pantora, Chairman Cho, got Obi-wan's attention. Obi-wan looked at the group and said, "Chairman Cho, Senator Chuchi. I suggest you wait here until we can secure the area." but Chairman Cho told him, "I respect your judgment, General Kenobi, but I will go where I choose." That made John look away and roll his eyes as the chairman continued speaking, "this is sovereign Pantora territory." that made Anakin say, "I thought this planet was uninhabited and therefore, it's not aligned."
"Our moon of Pantora is the only civilization in this system. I'm the one who asked the Senate to protect this planet. This wasteland belongs to us." John walked up and said, "With all due respect, Chairman, this is for the senate to decide, not us." The Chairman then pointed out that the Jedi report to the Senate, pointing out is currently Senator Chuchi of Pantora. The senator stepped forward and said, "Technically speaking, Master Jedi, the Chairman is correct. Since the planet is uninhabited, the moon of pantora reserves the right to continue as its protectorate." John said nothing as he knew what would happen but couldn't change the outcome so he just walked away as Obi-wan said, "Point taken, Senator."
"What is that one's problem?" the Chairman asked, pointing at John, and Obi-Wan said, "It's a matter for the Jedi only Chairman, so no need to bother yourself with it." Obi-Wan then looked at Anakin and said to him, "Anakin, stay here with the Senator and the droids while we secure the base." Obi-wan then walked up to John and said, "Come on John, keep it together. I know you know something, mind telling me something?" John simply looked at Obi-wan and said, "the Chairman's actions will lead to needless bloodshed, that's all I can say." Obi-wan nodded his head before they opened the entrance door. What they saw stunned them, clone helmets on pikes arranged in a V-shape. Rex said that he didn't get it before the Chairman said, "It must be Separatists."
Obi-wan looked at the helmet he took off one pike as he said, "I'm not sure." John looked at the Chairman and said, "I have to agree with Obi wan." The Chairman said nothing as they headed for the command center of the base. At the command center, the Chairman asked if Obi-wan thinks the Separatists were building a forward base to attack his home. But Obi-wan shook his head and said, "I don't think we're dealing with Separatists, these computers haven't been touched." John nodded his head and said, "'Cause Chairman Cho if we were then the computers would have been tampered with or we would have at least seen some dead droids." that was when rex told them that their scouts spotted a droid base on the other side of the Ice ridge. Obi-wan, Anakin, John and some clones took some CK-6 swoop bikes to the Separatist base.
Arriving at the Separatist base, the Jedi and clones saw that the Droids suffered the same as the clones troopers did. Obi wan looked at John and asked, "Do you know what did this?" John for once shook his head and said, "No, Rex in my times doesn't talk about it and since Ahsoka's not here she couldn't know." Obi-wan then told Rex to help Anakin set up the sensor beacons as he and John took the other clone and Nitro into the Separatist base.
Inside the base, John and Obi-wan were on an upper floor when Rex and Anakin came in. Obi-wan asked ANakin if he had found anything. ANakin found a footprint and told the Jedi masters, "I found some large footprints." Obi-Wan told him, "Have one of your men make a cast." entering the command bridge of the base, Obi-wan tried to get the Holotable powered up as Anakin and Rex came in. Anakin told Obi Wan that the sensors were in place before Obi wan said he may have found something, but the Holotable was not working. John then kicked the side and it booted up. A Droid contacting Separatist command.
"695 to command. There are too many of them. They've overrun the base. We need reinforcements. AH!" Was what the droid in the holoreplay said before a creature tackled it and destroyed it. Anakin looked at Obi-Wan and asked, "What was that?" Obi-Wan pointed out that whatever it was, it was a good warrior. That was when Rex said, "The Droid's log indicates that they were investigating the southern Canyon." Then Obi-wan said that it sounded like a good place to start." John nodded his head in agreement.
Back at the Republic base, Chairman Cho was giving orders to the clones. One order was, "I want the weapon system back online and the shields operational." he said that there was no telling what the Separatists might have planned. Senator Chuchi then turned from looking out the window and then at the chairman before she said, "Chairman, what makes you so certain the Separatists are behind this attack?" He responded by saying, "Look around, Senator. Isn't this carnage proof enough?." Chuchi then pointed out that there were no dead droids there, no blast marks. She was in the middle of saying that the clones' injuries were not consistent with battles with Droids, but Chairman Cho interrupted her by saying, "So you're an expert on war now, are you, Senator?"
"No, Chairman. No, I only…" Chuchi said before the Chairman interrupted her again by saying, "Let me tell you something, Senator. I have led our people since before you were born. I've seen a hundred planets rise and fall through force of arms. If it's not the Separatists out there, then it's a malevolent and aggressive enemy, nonetheless. And I will not let whoever it is jeopardize the security of the people of Pantora." Chuchi then said if the Jedi discover that the separatists weren't behind the attack and pointed out that there could be a peaceful solution. Chairman Cho walked into the elevator and told her, "Senator, I am willing to fight and die for my people. It's time to ask yourself if you are brave enough to do the same."
In the southern canyon, Anakin, John, and Obi-Wan all got off their Swoop bikes. Obi-wan pulled out Electrobinoculars and looked around as John and Anakin joined him. Obi-wan saw a reflection and pointed it out to the other two Jedi. Looking around, the three spotted more reflections and Obi-Wan said, "Well, they know we're coming." John agreed and said, "Let's go." He then led Anakin and Obi-Wan on their Swoop Bikes into the canyon as they were being watched. That was when they heard a creature roar before passing over an ice bridge and came across a settlement of large bipedal creatures covered in thick, shaggy white fur with sharp talons capping their five-fingered hands. The creatures had four eyes and rode blue Quadrupedal cat like creatures.
Getting out of the Swoop bikes, the Jedi were greeted by three of the bipedal creatures. Anakin was going for his lightsaber, but John stopped him by saying, "Easy Anakin. They're Curious is all. Let's not provoke them like the droids and our men must have done." They then walked into the village where two of them with spears blocked them but one, who looked like an elder, told the first two to let them enter. As they walked, Anakin said, "Too bad we didn't bring 3P0 along. How do you plan on communicating with these things?" John looked at him and said, "I can translate for us." ANakin and Obi-Wan looked at him when the elder creature led them to who was clearly the leader.
The leader stood up and spoke as he threw his spear into the snow. John told him, "We mean you no harm sir. We wish to talk." He then bowed to the leader, so did Anakin and Obi-Wan. The Jedi were then led into the hut they were in front of. In the hut, the leader told them about the droid's attack. John translated and said, "Chief Thi-Sen said that the droids attacked them." Obi wan told Thi-Sen that they wanted nothing but peace, Anakin even drew a picture of peace for them to see.
Later, the Jedi walked out and Obi-wan went to shake Thi-Sen's hand, but the Talz hugged him instead. They then left the village to return to the Republic base. In the hangar, Rex and Nitro approached them and Rex said, "Glad you made it back, sir. It's getting nasty out there." and Anakin told Rex, "You don't know the half of it." That was when Chairman Cho, Senator Chuchi, and their guards walked up to them and Chairman Cho asked them what they found. Obi-wan told him, "It seems we stumbled upon an inhabited planet." Chairman Cho refused to believe it so he said, "Impossible. Our explorers have spent much time here over the long history of Pantora. No one lives here. They're trespassers."
"With respect, Chairman Cho, the Talz aren't advanced enough to master space travel. It's clear to me that they have been here longer than Pantora." John said as he crossed his arms. The Chairman then said, "Whoever they are, they belong to us. This whole system belongs to us." That was when Senator Chuchi said to Chairman Cho, "Your Majesty, if there are life forms here, then the Senate must decide Jurisdiction." Chairman Cho looked at Senator Chuchi and told her that they are Savages and pointed to what they did to the clones. John then walked to them and said, "This reminds me of a show back where I'm from. A Group of people landed on a shore of an undiscovered land, thinking it was uninhabited. Then the people who lived there longer than the newcomers approached them. The landers called them savages too. The two sides would have gone to war if not for the princess of the people who called the land their home for years. There can always be peace between two factions."
"Master Bertrand is right. All they want is to be left alone. The Droids attacked them, and I'm afraid our outpost got caught in the middle." Obi-wan chimed in with. Chairman Cho was having none of it and said, "They must be subdued. They're dangerous." He then looked at Rex and Nitro and told them to prepare their troops for battle. John looked at Nitro and said, "Stand Down Nitro." Then Anakin told the chairman that they promised that there would be no retaliation. Then John said, "We've arranged a meeting between their high council and you and the Senator. They want peace."
"Obi-wan speaks the truth. If we send troopers, they'll think we lied to them." John said as he crossed his arms. Chairman Cho said that the Talz were little more than animals, and that made John angry. John then said, "THEN WHAT DOES THAT MAKE YOU CHAIRMAN CHO?! CAUSE YOU DON'T KNOW ANYTHING! I WAS SAVED BY A TALZ BEFORE I CAME HERE!" Everyone looked at John after his outburst. Chairman Cho looked at him and said, "I would watch my tongue if I were you Master Jedi." John grunted and walked off. Senator Chuchi tried to get the chairman to listen to reason, but he would not listen as he said, "It is obvious these creatures are not covered by the Convention of Convention of Civilized Systems. The Jedi Council has no say in the matter."
"If the Jedi are able to communicate with them, their status is in doubt." Senator Chuchi said to the Chairman, making Cho ask Chuchi if she was standing against him, and Senator Chuchi said, "Of course not your majesty." Then Obi-wan said, "If we are going to meet with Thi-Sen and his council at the arranged time, we will have to leave now." Chairman Cho nodded his head and said, "Of course Master Kenobi." He then walked off with his escort to some swoop bikes as Rex pointed out that the gunships could not take off in the storm. John and the men under his command stayed behind as Anakin, Obi-wan, the Chairman, the Senator, the guards and 3P0 went to meet with Thi-Sen and his council.
"Sir, what did you mean when you said a Talz saved you before you came here?" Nitro asked his Jedi Commander. John sighed and said, "As you men know I am not from this time period, I came from the far future. In that future I was a common soldier like you all before I became a Jedi. During a mission to an ice planet, I was with some soldiers when the ground caved and all the men but I were killed. Getting out of the planet a Talz came and took me to his home, took care of me until I was fully healed. I thanked him and learned his language. The Talz are peaceful when left alone. But I will never forget that day." the 898th clones nodded their heads.
"I see sir, that Talz did a good thing then. If he didn't save you then we wouldn't have a Jedi General." A clone jokingly said. John smiled and said, "That is true Shiv, that is true." John then stood up and said, "The Chairman got under my skin is all. How he said the Talz were nothing but animals. It got me infuriated." Nitro walked to his General and said, "I have to agree with you on that." John nodded his head before contacting Ash and said to him, "How's the storm looking Ash?" Ash told him, "Not good. It won't be cleared up for a few hours." John sighed and said, "Copy that." Nitro asked if he was expecting trouble, but John told him, "More like trouble is heading to the Talz."
Later, John saw Obi-wan, ANakin, Senator Chuchi, and 3P0 return. John looked and didn't see the chairman. John growled and said, "Let me guess, Chairman Cho is on the march to the Talz." Obi-Wan nodded his head and Senator Chuchi said, "Yes, he's gone too far. I must speak to the Speaker of the Assembly on Pantora immediately." John nodded his head and walked with her as he said, "The Chairman is a fool, he's going to have lives lost for no reason." After a while, the clones were getting on the gunships as Obi-wan, Anakin, John, and Senator Chuchi were in contact with the Speaker of the Assembly and he told them, "The Assembly has decided that the actions of Chairman Cho are out of order. Senator Chichu, you are given the authority to negotiate a peaceful settlement between the sovereign planet of Pantora and the Talz."
"It is decided then." Obi-wan said to them. Anakin then told the pilot to take off. John smiled as he thought that the Speaker of the Assembly had some common sense at least as the gunships took off. Along the way, Obi-Wan told Chuchi, "Senator, now that you have the authority, how do you plan on making peace with the Talz." She told him that since the Jedi had more experience, she was hoping they would negotiate on Pantora's behalf. The Jedi looked at each other before John told Chuchi, "I'm afraid that's not possible, Senator." She brought up that the Jedi serve the Senate and she was about to order them to do it, but Obi-Wan told her, "Senator, it is your people the Talz are at war with. If the violence is to stop, it is you who must represent your people."
"Master Kenobi is right, Senator Chuchi, if we were to do the negotiations, then it would seem that Pantora is hiding behind the Jedi to end this war. The Chairman of Pantora started this conflict, so it must be Pantora who must end it." John told her as they continued towards the conflict. Arriving at where the battle was taking place, it was near a cliffside. Stepping out, John was horrified at the number of clones left. Walking with Anakin, Obi-Wan, and the Senator, John heard Rex say, "Good to see you sir." Anakin asked his Clone Captain if he was ok, and Rex told him, "Eh, it's just a scratch." Anakin then asked him what was going on.
"We're in quite a mess, sir. Eleven dead, the rest wounded, including the Chairman." Rex told them as he motioned around him and then to the Chairman as the Talz watched from a distance. Senator Chuchi walked over to the dying Chairman. Chuchi asked if the Chairman could hear her and he told her, "Senator, good. You must avenge me. As my final command as Chairman of Pantora, I order you to destroy the Talz." John facepalmed as Chuchi told him, "I'm afraid I cannot do that, Chairman. The Pantoran Assembly has called you out of order. I am to negotiate peace." As he died, the Chair breathed his last words, he said, "No, impossible. Peace? Never. I died…. For our people." he then slumped against the speeder bike dead. Then the mounts the Talz were using howled as Obi-wan said, "Senator, now is the time."
She nodded and took Cho's hat from him and then picked up a spear before she said, "Protocol droid, come with me." Anakin told 3P0 to get going, much to his upsetness but still he went. R2 told 3P0 good luck. Senator Chuchi and 3P0 met with Thi-Sen in the middle of the current battlefield. Thi-Sen looked at the Senator before getting off his mount and walking up to her and 3P0. John watched as they talked. CHuchi asked 3P0 to translate for her. 3P0 said, "Yes Mistress." Right before she raised the spear and stuck it into the ground. She then said, "To die for one's people is a great sacrifice. To live for one's people, an even greater sacrifice." 3P0 translated for her to Thi-Sen. Chuchi then said, "I choose to live for my people." She then asked Thi-Sen what he would choose. Again, 3P0 translated for her.
Thi-Sen looked at her and spoke his tongue before raising his own spear, making Chuchi scared, but he put the spear blade up, saying he chooses to live as well. Chichui was told by 3P0 that Thi-Sen chose to live as well for his people, making her say, "We will leave Orto Plutonia under the watchful eyes of the Talz from this day forth, and recognize your sovereignty as a free and equal people." Thi-Sen and Chuchi then bowed to each other, followed by the remaining Talz and their mounts. Thi-Sen then got back on his and led his people away from the battlefield.
"Well done, Senator." John told Cuchi after she and 3P0 got back to the gunships. Then Anakin said, "Yes, most impressive." Chuchi thanked them both and walked onto the gunship with them as Obi-wan said, "Now that you have created peace between your people and the Talz, remember one crucial thing." Chuchi looked at him and said, "Yes, Master Kenobi?" and he told her, "Make it last, Senator. Make it last. And be an example to others so not only this war, but every war waged may come to an end as well." Chuchi nodded her head and said, "I will, I promise you." They then got onto the nearby gunship and they all took off from the planet and left the Talz in peace.
