Chapter Three

The Path

'So let the way wind up the hill or down,

O'er rough or smooth, the journey will be joy:

Still seeking what I sought when but a boy,

New friendship, high adventure, and a crown,

My heart will keep the courage of the quest,

And hope the road's last turn will be the best.'

Henry Van Dyke, 'Life'

Amy slipped through the shadows behind Rustboro Gym, the air charged with the anticipation of a clandestine meeting. The night enveloped her like a cloak, concealing her movements until she spotted the familiar figure of Jules, leaning against the weathered bricks with an air of nonchalant energy. Jules, with a charm that defied easy categorization, sported a pixie cut of raven-black hair and matching bottoms, hoodie and hat to fight the chill in the air. Their eyes, bright blue and visible even in the dark, reflected the mischief that had been a constant in their friendship since childhood.

Beside Jules stood their Hoennian Dedenne, a whimsical yet resolute Pokemon with silver fur adorned in playful pink accents. The tail-bat made of resilient steel gleamed in the moonlight, a testament to both the creature's strength and Jules' inventive spirit.

As Amy approached, the Dedenne chirped with delight, its small frame radiating a comforting warmth. Jules greeted Amy with an infectious grin, the energy between them sparking with unspoken understanding.

'So, an unplanned early leave eh? Exciting!' Jules greeted her.

'Listen, Jules… we need to talk.'

Jules' smile dropped instantly.

'You're not flaking out on me, are you?'

Amy shook her head.

'No, nothing like that… but there's more to us leaving early than you know. And you should know everything before you agree to come.'

Jules laughed.

'You're joking, right? This has been agreed since we were five years old.'

'Will you just shut up and let me explain?' Amy asked.

The urgency in her voice was all she needed for Jules to submit.

'What's the matter?' Jules asked, lowering their voice in volume and pitch for the first time.

'What I'm about to tell you… we have to be quick and we have to be quiet…'

Amy dove into her explanation of all the information she had learned in the past hour. She explained about her encounter in Petalburg Woods with the mysterious stranger, his message to her father and her father's story as a result of the message being delivered. Amy explained the need to leave quickly because she could be in danger and warned Jules that if they were to come with her, they might also be in danger.

Jules absorbed all of this without a word. Then, when Amy had finished explaining and looked at Jules expectantly, Jules leaned over and put their arm on her shoulder.

'Right… well, it looks like we'd best hurry up and leave then, you think?'

Amy couldn't help but smile.

'I love your enthusiasm, Jules - but seriously, you could be in danger.'

'And so could you, Amy,' Jules replied, 'Do you really think I'd let you go it alone?'

Amy stared for a moment, then nodded.

'Thanks,' she said, sincerely.

'Shut up.' Jules replied, 'Anyway, I have an idea.'

'What's that?' Amy asked.

'Well, you know you're being watched. You may be being watched right now. And to just walk out of Rustboro, it wouldn't exactly be hard to follow you, would it?'

Amy looked around, suddenly paranoid.

'That's a good point.' She admitted.

'Well, like I said. I have an idea,' Jules took one of the three Pokeballs from their belt and opened it. A moment later, Ralts appeared on the pavement.

'Ralts?' Amy asked.

Jules nodded, 'Of course. Ralts is gonna ensure we're not being followed.'

'But how - oh - of course! Teleport! But where do we go?'

'Well, I'm not going to say it out loud. Kinda defeats the object. But we've planned this enough times for you to know.'

And of course, Amy did know. They had always planned their route out of Rustboro. They would travel east towards Rusturf Tunnel, into Verdanturf, then on to Mauville. Of course, they had planned to do this with Rustboro Gym's badge in hand, but that would have to wait.

Amy nodded in understanding.

'You've got it,' Jules said, turning to Ralts, 'What do you say, Ralts? Fancy teleporting us? Read my mind, and you'll know where to take us.'

Ralts toddled over to the both of them and clutched a piece of fabric from their bottoms in each limb.

'Here we go,' Jules grinned.

With a flash of light and a subtle ripple in the air, Amy and Jules materialised at the entrance of Rusturf Tunnel. The sensation of teleportation dissipated, leaving them standing at the mouth of the tunnel, the cool breeze carrying a hint of an earthy scent from the cavernous depths beyond. The moon hung low in the night sky, casting a silvery glow that illuminated the surroundings.

The entrance to Rusturf Tunnel, carved into the rugged terrain, presented an opening framed by moss-covered rocks. The stone arch bore the marks of time, its surface weathered by the passage of countless trainers and Pokemon. Faint echoes of distant Pokemon calls reverberated within the tunnel, adding a layer of anticipation to the quiet night.

The area surrounding the tunnel was a patchwork of moonlit meadows and shadowy groves. Tall grass whispered in the night breeze, and wild Pokemon stirred in the underbrush. A small stream, its gentle babble harmonizing with the nocturnal symphony, meandered nearby. The rustle of leaves and the distant murmur of flowing water created an ambiance that spoke of untold adventures awaiting discovery.

Amy took a moment to absorb the tranquil beauty of the surroundings, the rocky entrance to Rusturf Tunnel standing as a gateway to the unknown. With Jules at her side, Dedenne perched on their shoulder, Amy stepped forward, the journey through the tunnel beckoning them with the promise of mystery and, most importantly of all, adventure.
