Chapter Four
Rocky Road
"It does not matter how slow you go as long as you do not stop."
Confucius
The air within Rusturf Tunnel hung thick with a comforting dampness, a stark contrast to the crisp night they had left behind. Amy and Jules moved further into the cavernous expanse, the echoes of their footsteps bouncing off the rocky walls. The tunnel was dimly lit by the soft glow of luminescent moss clinging to the stone, casting an ethereal ambiance on their surroundings. Shadows danced along the rugged terrain, creating an otherworldly backdrop for the beginning of their subterranean journey.
As they ventured deeper, the natural acoustics of the tunnel intensified the distant sounds of Pokemon calls. The occasional rhythmic tap-tap of claws against stone kept them company as they moved.
Jules, ever the enthusiast, couldn't contain their excitement.
"I've been itching to catch a Whismur for ages, and Rusturf Tunnel is the perfect spot for it," they exclaimed, their eyes gleaming with anticipation. "There's something about hearing a Whismur's cry that just feels... right, you know? Let's keep our eyes and ears open!"
The soft echo of rhythmic footsteps accompanied Amy and Jules as they traversed the winding tunnels. Suddenly, a distinct sound echoed through the cavern—a gentle, rhythmic cry that resonated with the characteristic charm of a Whismur. Jules, with eyes widening in excitement, gestured for Amy to follow as they approached the source of the melodic hum.
In a small alcove, bathed in the soft glow of luminescent moss, they spotted the source of the sound—a timid Whismur, its large ears twitching with curiosity. Jules grinned at Amy before sending their Dedenne into battle. The Steel and Fairy type Pokemon bounded forward, ready for the confrontation.
"Alright, Dedenne, let's show this Whismur what we're made of! Thunder Shock!" Jules commanded.
With a burst of electric energy, Dedenne launched a crackling Thunder Shock at the Whismur. The Electric-type move danced around the Whismur, leaving sparks in its wake. The Whismur, startled but not deterred, retaliated with by charging at Dedenne with a Pound. Dedenne topped over but quickly recovered.
Jules, gauging the battle carefully, seized the moment. "Now, Dedenne, use Iron Tail!"
Dedenne took hold of its own tail and swung at Whismur, hitting it with precision. The Whismur wobbled on its tiny feet.
With a triumphant grin, Jules retrieved a Pokeball from their pocket. With a swift motion, Jules hurled the Pokeball towards the exhausted Whismur. The ball connected with a satisfying thud, encapsulating the Whismur within.
For a moment, anticipation hung in the air as the Pokeball wobbled rhythmically.
However, the hopeful atmosphere shattered when the Pokeball burst open, the Whismur darting away with newfound energy, its cry echoing through the tunnel.
Jules sighed, disappointed.
"Well, you win some, you lose some. Let's keep moving. We're bound to find another one!"
Determined and undeterred, Jules led the way deeper into Rusturf Tunnel.
A few minutes later after a short walk in silence, Jules spoke up:
'So, I think it's important in the early stages of our journey that we establish our goals.'
'It's not like you don't know,' Amy said.
'Doesn't matter! It's symbolic of our determination! Come on!' Jules replied.
'Alright, alright…' Amy said, trying to suppress a grin, 'I want to become Hoenn League Champion and I want to become a notable Shiny Hunter.'
'And I, Jules North, will become a battle-hardened trainer forged by the treacherous paths I take and I will impart that knowledge upon anyone willing to learn! I will become a gym leader or a member of the Elite Four! I will learn, and I will teach! And thus, the cycle is complete!'
'Very grandeur.' Amy responded sarcastically.
'If you're not going grand, you may as well go bust.' Jules quipped back.
'Fair enough. Well, you'd best learn fast if you want that Whismur - I'm pretty sure the Verdanturf exit isn't that far away now.' Amy replied.
Jules nodded, throwing out a Pokeball for Ralts to reappear.
'Don't worry, I've learned my lesson from last time. Whismur are tougher than they appear. And I'm pretty sure,' Jules said, lowering his voice, 'That little Whismur over there is the one I tried to catch.'
There was a Whismur, standing on top of a small rock, staring up at the walls and away from Jules and Amy.
Jules knelt down to Ralts and spoke so quietly it was almost a whisper. Amy barely heard Jules' instructions, but Ralts heard them just fine. He nodded, then teleported.
A moment later, Ralts appeared in front of the suddenly startled Whismur and blasted it with a psychic wave.
'Confusion, nice!' Jules exclaimed, suddenly loud again. 'And now for the main event!'
Jules threw another Pokeball at the Whismur. Once again it was enveloped in the red light, and once again the Pokeball shook rhythmically a few times… until it stopped and settled, the Pokemon captured inside.
'And just like that, Jules North adds Whismur to their incomparable team!'
'Good job.' Amy said, grinning.
Jules picked up the Pokeball.
'Thanks but it put up a pretty good fight. It could probably do with being healed. Let's get out of here.'
The light at the end of the tunnel grew as they approached the exit, heading out into Verdanturf Town.
