Aizen buried himself as far as he could in the mass of feathers and settled down to wait. It looked like it would be quite some time before he reached the first division. Though he had hitched a ride if he were to be discovered he was a dead man or to be more specific a dead rat.
Not something he wanted.
The cogwheels in his brains were spinning. The morning had started with him turning into a rat. And since not only him but some of the other shinigami had also been affected. So far he had deduced that only very high ranked shinigami's were affected.
Not only that, for some reason their zanpaktous were also sealed somehow. They were unable to use kido. Aizen couldn't since sense any of the captains nearby. As they approached the first division he could sense the captains and the lieutenants.
'An emergency meeting huh?' he wondered. 'Does that mean all the other captains and lieutenants have also changed into animals? If so how?'
He puzzled over the solution a few moments longer before deciding to leave the rest of his deductions till he reached the first division. For now he had to wait and watch.
Mizuki didn't know how closely he had guessed the right thing. He would instead inform the fourth seat of the emergency captain's meeting before returning to the first division unaware of the shock lying in wait for him there.
Mizuki reached the first division soon. He walked through the gates while still contemplating his strange orders.
Flashback
A hell butterfly fluttered along, smooth black wings glistening in the sunlight as it made it's way through its surroundings. It bypassed the heavily guarded doors of the meeting hall, guarded by stoic looking first division members and made its way down the street.
The insect soon founds it's way to the mess hall of the first division looking for it's recipient, a certain fifth seat of the first division. It settled on one of the walls before detecting said shinigami.
The male had sat down with a bowl of ramen when the hell butterfly came settling at the edge of his bowl. Pulling away from his food Mizuki wiped his face and held out a finger. The butterfly changed its position and the message was delivered.
Fifth seat you have been ordered to inform all the divisions that their respective captains and lieutenants are in a meeting with the captain commander and I. This message is to be delivered to the third and the fourth seats of each division from the Second to the Thirteenth. They are to look after their respective divisions. Do not disturb even in emergency.
The voice belonged to Chojiro Sasakaibe.
Similar hell butterflies had arrived to the third and fourth seats who were informed to take over all the affairs of the first division.
The message had been a bit strange. The other thing that was significant was the absence of both the third seats of the thirteenth division and the third and fifth seats of the eleventh division. The fourth seat of the eleventh division had taken ill for some reason so the sixth and seventh seats were currently running the eleventh division.
Also when he had tried to meet the third and fourth seats of the twelfth division he had been waved away by a woman saying that there was a laboratory emergency. That had caused him to hightail out of the division since he did not under any circumstances interested in being turned into a research subject.
The last really weird thing was the complaints of the third seat Iemura of the fourth division. He had complained about the absence of some Hanataro Yamada and something about cleaning the sewers.
All in all it was one of the strangest morning he had. No wonder he had fainted due to the laboratory runway experiment/ hallucination.
The corridor was empty. The polished wooden floor glistened and reflected the walking figure of the fifth seat who was making his way to the gates of the Captains meeting hall.
Mizuki stood in front of the giant doors, which seemed to loom ominously over him. He gulped and remembered the warning message that he had been given by the hell butterfly. But he was curious. So many questions were coming to his mind.
Why couldn't they enter the meeting hall? Why was there an emergency Captain's meeting? What was this foreboding feeling?
'No. I can't back away. I have to know!' Mizuki decided.
Gulping he reached towards the door and pushed it open.
It had been difficult but not impossible for Yumichika, Ikkaku, Kiyone and Sentarou to reach the first division. Fortunately for them the distance between the thirteenth and first division was small and they could all still use shunpo.
They arrived in record time and went towards the Captain's Meeting hall unmindful of the hitchhiker hidden in Yumichika's plumage.
When they arrived the scene was something completely different from their expectations.
Exactly 3 minutes 34 seconds earlier with Mizuki Ren, Fifth seat, First Division
Mizuki pushed open the heavy doors with as much strength as he could. He stood stock still and gawked. Instead of the expected sight of the two rows of shinigami captains with their vice-captains standing behind them there was a bunch of birds and animals some of which he couldn't even name.
"Baa.. I mean fifth seat Mizuki? What ever are you doing here?" questioned Sasakaibe staring at his subordinate.
He then trotted forward to the gawking shocked male. Mizuki looked down at the goat that for some reason had a mustache but was missing a beard.
"Gugh…guh?" A garbling sound came out of Mizuki's throat.
"Don't scream!" ordered the lieutenant while the rest of the occupants waited with bated breath for the other's reaction.
The fifth's mouth closed with an audible click at which everyone let out a sigh of relief. And then he screamed.
"GYAHHHHHH!" screamed Mizuki in utter horror before turning and trying to run. He couldn't run very far because Byakuya leapt into action pinning the male under his powerful limbs.
"Grab him!" hissed the head captain. Shinji immediately grabbed hold of Mizuki's hakama as he desperately tried to wiggle away from the black panther screaming for his dear life. Mizuki was dragged into the room by his legs leaving scratches on the floor where he had desperately tried to claw away. Unohana closed the door with her trunk an ominous thud resounding through the empty hallway outside the meeting hall.
The four seated officers who had been turned into animals arrived at the meeting hall only to find it full of animals trying to catch a seated officer who seemed to almost bounce off the walls dressed in only the top part of his uniform and fundoshi. He was waving around his released zanpaktou a whip like metal thing with electricity crackling on it.
When Mizuki had been dragged into the hall he had escaped leaving his hakama behind. He had then been tackled by a horse and a polar bear. After maneuvering away he had released his weapon and had managed to use restraining kido on a giraffe and a fox.
Just then the animals from his hallucinations had arrived distracting him. This allowed Komamura to knock away his sword and Nemu to inject him with a tranquillizer. Komamura caught hold of him carefully and gently lowered the dizzy and terrified shinigami to the ground.
"Captain!" exclaimed Ikkaku rushing over to Kenpachi and Yachiru who had gotten out of the kido. The other three followed suit with Kiyone and Sentarou veering towards Ukitake.
What they did not notice was a rat scurrying across the floor unmindful of all the disorder.
Hinamori sighed in relief as the panicking fifth seat was caught and restrained. From her position at the corner of the hall where she had taken refuge from the rampaging animals she could see Komamura carefully tying up Mizuki with his own hakama.
Suddenly someone tapped her on the shoulder. She turned and her eyes widened at the familiar looking rodent.
"Hello Himamori kun." Came the voice of Aizen from the other rodent's mouth.
Momo's eyes widened in shock before her world went black and she sank into darkness.
