A/N: Hey everyone! I'm trying to figure out where this story is going next and would love to include you guys in that. With the time jump in Season 4-5, would you guys want Kali and Sawyer to stay together or spend some of that time apart? I'm leaning towards the latter as the angst and reunion could be amazing but I don't want to do something that readers aren't going to like. Please leave a comment or PM me if you have an opinion. Thanks!
Kali's eyes shot open suddenly, pain radiating from the back of her head as she slowly pushed herself into a sitting position. She groaned as her vision blurred for a moment, trying to remember the last thing that happened before...
The Others.
Kali was quick to survey her surroundings, finding she was in one of the houses in the barracks, which appeared to have been ransacked. The house was quiet. Way too quiet. She pushed herself to her feet with a stumble, her gaze falling on a familiar figure further down the corridor, feeling her heart stop for a moment. She was instantly racing forward, dropping to her knees beside Sawyer, seeing blood seeping from the back of his head.
"James? James!" Kali cried, shaking his shoulder, panic taking over her as he stayed motionless.
All of a sudden, he woke with a start, sitting bolt upright as his head collided with the wall behind him. Kali allowed herself to breathe a sigh of relief, feeling her heart returning to its normal rhythm. Sawyer's eyes darted around the room, confusion etched over his features when Kali smacked him in the arm, making him cry out in pain.
"What was that for-" His words were cut off as she all but lunged at him a second later, wrapping her arms around his shoulders.
Sawyer was quick to return the hug, circling his arms around her waist and dropping his chin to her shoulder, closing his eyes contently. She cradled the back of his head with a shaky hand, the other still gripping on tightly to the back of his shirt. Neither of them were sure how long they stayed in that position, just holding onto each other.
"I thought they had..." Kali trailed off, not wanting to finish her sentence.
"Never gonna' happen, blue eyes" Sawyer replied, turning to press a quick kiss to her hair.
"It looks like they've cleaned this place out" Kali murmured, reluctantly pulling away from the hug.
"They've gone?" Sawyer frowned.
"Seems like it" Kali stated, standing up and holding her hand out for Sawyer to take.
She helped haul him upright, noting the way he swayed, having to hold onto the wall behind him to remain standing. She reached up to touch his hair that was matted with blood, finding it was still wet. She left him in the corridor, rushing to the kitchen to grab a towel for him to stem the flow of blood. He took it gratefully from her hand, grimacing as pain ripped from his skull as he placed the cloth to his head.
"So...your brother can teleport now or some shit?" Sawyer exclaimed, as Kali shook her head.
"He kept looking at his watch. I think he knew that flash was going to happen at a certain time. He just had to make sure he was in the right place at the right time" Kali theorised, only confusing Sawyer further.
"How could he know all that?" Sawyer pushed.
"I don't know. Nothing on this bloody island makes sense" Kali grumbled, as a smile grew on Sawyer's lips.
"Your cute when you pout" Sawyer grinned, leaning a little closer, as Kali shared his expression.
"Maybe your concussion is just making you delirious" Kali teased, as Sawyer rolled his eyes, before leaning forward to press a soft kiss to her lips.
A loud cough from nearby had the pair suddenly springing apart, whipping around to find Sayid standing in the doorway of the house, an amused expression on his face. Kali was glad to see apart from a small cut on his forehead, he seemed to be otherwise unharmed.
"Sorry to interrupt" Sayid smirked, as Sawyer sneered at him.
"I bet you are" He muttered, as Kali walked over to the older man.
"You alright?" Kali asked, earning a quick nod in return.
"I suppose I don't have to ask you that" Sayid teased, making Kali scoff, as she slapped his arm, noticing a group of people standing behind him.
"Well...if it's not my favourite jackass" Kali called out, when she noticed Jack standing next to Kate and Desmond.
"Sawyer's better at the nicknames, you know" Jack told her, with a smile as she walked towards them.
"Damn right I am" Sawyer replied, following close behind.
"It's good to see you, Jack" Kali exclaimed, before jumping up to pull him into a quick hug, which he happily returned.
"You too" Jack murmured in a genuine tone, wrapping his arms around her.
"I've almost missed you" Kali admitted.
"Almost?" Jack laughed, when a hand was suddenly ushering them apart.
"Alright, alright. Enough with the hugging" Sawyer complained, with a hint of jealousy to his voice.
"If you want to hug the Doc so bad, all you have to do is ask, Sawyer" Kali teased, causing Sawyer to huff out a laugh.
"Glad to see you two haven't changed one bit" Jack grinned, as Kali and Sawyer shared a look, pleased.
"Where's Locke?" Kali frowned, realising the bald man was missing.
"He's with them. He turned on us" Kate exclaimed, watching Kali's eyes widen.
"He and Ben did seem pretty friendly" Kali sighed, running a hand through her hair.
"Why did your brother blow up the sub, Kali?" Jack couldn't help but ask, a few moments later.
"He thought he was doing the right thing" Desmond murmured, as all eyes turned to him, in surprise.
Kali didn't understand why Desmond seemed to think he understood her brother. She could imagine he had seen Ken once or twice in his 'flashes', but surely that was it? Just as Kali opened her mouth to retort, she spotted a familiar blonde approaching them, immediately tensing. Juliet. She reached out to grab Sawyer's arm as he took a step forward, a furious expression on his face.
"What's she doing here?" Sawyer questioned.
"She's coming with us" Jack announced, as Sawyer gave him a look of disbelief.
"The hell she is! Have you forgotten what her people did to us? They beat us, they tortured Kali-" Sawyer began, but Juliet was quick to interject.
"I tried to stop them, I really did" Juliet stated, making Kali scoff.
"Well, clearly you didn't try hard enough" Kali muttered, bitterly.
"Look, the Others left her behind. She's not one of them. Not anymore" Jack explained, before he reached down to take Juliet's hand and started leading her away.
"Good talk, Doc!" Kali called after him, in a sarcastic tone.
"This is going to be a problem" Sayid exclaimed, as the entire group nodded, uneasily.
"You guys go with them, me and Sawyer are going to scout out the barracks more. See if we can find anything more about our new friend" Kali suggested, as Sawyer quirked an eyebrow.
"Whatever you say, Ma'am" Sawyer smirked, in a flirtatious tone.
A few hours later they managed to meet up with the group who had stopped at a nearby stream. Juliet seemed to be in an intense conversation with Sayid, who had been burning holes into the other woman's face with his eyes. Jack immediately came to her defence, placing himself in between the two. Always the knight in shining armour.
"She'll answer your questions when she's ready. And you'll wait until then" Jack told him, surprising Sayid by his stern words.
"And why's that?" Sayid retorted.
"She's under my protection" Jack exclaimed, as Kali couldn't stop the giggle that left her lips.
"...Oh, you're serious, huh?" Kali murmured, thinking he was just being sarcastic.
"Just leave her alone" Jack insisted, before beginning to build a fire with Kate close by his side.
Deciding to do the complete opposite, Kali and Sawyer came to sit on either side of the blonde, as Kali pulled out a file from the backpack she had acquired. They could both sense how Juliet stilled when she opened the brown folder, pulling out a picture of Juliet from a few years prior. She seemed to have a good idea of what was coming next.
"Juliet Burke. Pretty name" Kali said, as the older woman was quick to grab the file from Kali's hands, trying to keep it out of Jack's view.
"What the hell is this?" Juliet frowned.
"It's everything Ben has...on you" Kali smirked, seeing the panic rising in the woman.
"Born 1971. Parents divorced when you were a child. You've got an older sister called Rachel, and a nephew called Julian. Not that you've ever met him" Kali went on, as Juliet's eyes snapped up to hers.
"It says why I came here?" Juliet asked, as Kali nodded.
"They needed a fertility doctor. And it seems like Ben had been following you for some time" Kali explained.
"Is that why your people took Claire? You experimented on her?" Sawyer guessed, as Juliet tensed, realising the pair didn't seem to know the extent of danger pregnant women faced on the island.
"We were trying to help her" Juliet argued.
"Yeah, your people seem to do that a lot" Kali spat out, pushing herself to her feet.
"Ben promised that he could cure my sister. She...she had cancer" Juliet confessed.
"Not anymore by what that file says. She's in complete remission. A miracle" Kali murmured, with a shake of her head.
"Everything I've done was to save someone I love. Surely the both of you can understand that?" Juliet pushed, as Kali and Sawyer's eyes connected.
"Of course we do" Kali agreed, holding her hand out for Juliet to take, offering to help her stand.
The blonde stared at the offered limb for a few seconds, before taking her hand with a grateful smile. Kali easily helped pull her up, keeping her grip tight on Juliet's hand when she spoke again.
"...But what I don't understand, is why this was left behind?" Kali questioned, indicating to the folder by their feet.
"Clearly Ben doesn't care what you know about me anymore" Juliet shrugged.
"Maybe. Or maybe you both wanted us to find it" Kali suggested, tugging Juliet closer, so she could whisper to the older woman.
"I care a lot about my friends, Juliet. Jack just so happens to be one of them. If you hurt him, you'll wish you had been in the sub when it exploded" Kali hissed, before releasing her hand and shoving past her, as Sawyer was quick to follow behind her.
"Remind me never get on the wrong side of you" Sawyer chuckled, as they stopped by the stream.
"And don't you forget it" Kali grinned, crouching down to splash him with some water.
Their reunion with the rest of the group the next day was uneasy, to say the least. Unsurprisingly, the group were distrustful of Juliet, refusing to have her around them. Kali couldn't help but be glad she was no longer public enemy number one. She hoped that with Juliet as a distraction the rest of the group would forget they had ever wanted her gone. That night, there was a meeting to decide on Juliet's fate, as Jack tried to convince them that she wasn't like the other...Others?
"I didn't think the Others would be so..." Hurley trailed off, tilting his head as his eyes darted over Juliet.
"Blonde?" Kali guessed.
"I don't think that was the word he was thinking of" Charlie said, with a dirty grin.
"We're thinking with our heads right now, not any other body part" Kali insisted.
"Well, technically I was-" Charlie began, as Kali smacked him around the back of the head.
"Hey!" Charlie cried, as Kali and Hurley sniggered at his dramatics.
"Where're those two assholes who were trying to get me voted off the island?" Kali asked, when she noticed Nikki and Paulo were nowhere to be seen.
"Oh. They're dead, dude" Hurley replied, as Kali's eyes almost popped out of her head.
"...Care to elaborate?" Kali insisted, when he said nothing else.
"They killed each other a load of diamonds. We buried them over there" Charlie explained, pointing over to a pile of sand further up the beach.
"Huh" Kali frowned, still taken aback.
"Did someone say diamonds?" Sawyer questioned, approaching the three, slinging his arm around Kali's shoulder.
"Where have you been?" Kali asked, as Sawyer nodded over to Jin.
"Jin was showing me our new place" Sawyer grinned.
"Our new place?" Kali repeated, as he gave her an excited nod.
"He's set us up a tent. Returned most of my stash too. Minus a few porn mags" Sawyer replied.
"Oh, how will you survive?" Kali scoffed, as he dropped his arm to circle around her waist.
"Well, I have some ideas" Sawyer smirked, tightening his grip.
"I'm gonna' throw up" Charlie grimaced, quickly pushing past the pair to stand beside Claire.
"What?" Sawyer frowned, when he saw the way Hurley was beaming at them.
"You two are adorable" Hurley smiled, as Sawyer glared at him.
"Hey, you take that back" Sawyer argued, earning a laugh from both Kali and Hurley.
"Claire!" A panicked shout had their heads whipping around, smiles instantly dropping from their faces.
Kali gasped when she saw the blonde was falling to her knees, blood pouring from her nose, skin a ghostly pale colour. Instantly, Kali and Jack were racing forward, everything around them forgotten. Claire let out a disturbing gurgling sound as the blood trickled down the back of her throat, causing her to choke. Charlie and Jack grabbed Claire to bring her towards one of the nearby tents while Kali used a jaw thrust to keep Claire's airway open, adrenaline pulsing through her veins.
"Is she okay? What's happening to her?" Charlie gaped, as they carefully placed her down on the sand.
"How long has she been like this?" Jack asked, as Kali helped them to move Claire into the recovery position.
"S-she started feeling bad this morning" Charlie answered, in a shaky voice.
"Was she showing any symptoms before we got back?" Kali frowned.
"No. She was fine. God, what's happening to her?" Charlie panicked, watching as her blood began to stain the sand below.
"Shit, Jack, I need some suction or something. She's gonna' aspirate" Kali warned, as Jack shook his head, knowing they didn't have anything.
"Just keep her airways open. I'll see what we have in the medical stash" Jack told her, rushing towards his tent.
"She's gonna' be alright, yeah? Right, Kali?" Charlie pushed, eyes wide with fear.
"...Claire's strong. We'll figure out what's wrong with her, okay?" Kali replied, as Charlie nodded, slowly.
The sun would soon be rising by the time Kali finally left Claire in Jack's capable hands. The blonde was doing no better. It was as if her body was attacking itself for some unknown reason. And it just so happened to begin as soon as they came back to the camp. Something which none of the others seemed to have picked up on yet. She yawned as she finally reached her new 'home', pulling back to tent flaps to find Sawyer reading a book on the blankets laid out on the sand. He was quick to put his book down, removing his glasses and holding out his arm to her. Getting comfortable, they laid down on their backs, as Kali rest her head on his chest, as if it was the most natural thing in the world.
"How is she?" Sawyer questioned.
"Not good. She won't last long if we don't figure out what's wrong with her" Kali stated.
"Or who" Sawyer muttered, as Kali's eyes flickered up to his.
"I don't believe in coincidences" Kali agreed.
"We'll keep an eye on Juliet in the morning. See what she does, where she goes" Sawyer assured her, watching Kali nod.
"So, how'd you like our tent?" Sawyer inquired, as Kali took in her surroundings.
It was made up of some tarp from the wreckage and bamboo they had cut down in the jungle. A few holes in the tarp would mean it wouldn't be the most comfortable shelter when it rained, but it was an improvement on what they had grown used to in the cages. Sawyer's books and a few bottles of alcohol surrounded them, as Kali realised just how little items she had of her own. She wasn't used to staying in one place for long. Things were different now, she mused.
"Well, it could use a paintjob" She grinned, teasingly.
"I'll have to remember that for our next place" Sawyer chuckled, as she lifted her head from his chest.
"James Ford talking about the future? You must really have a concussion" Kali suggested, as he rolled her eyes.
"Maybe...I've changed" Sawyer shrugged, as she gave him a look.
"Why?" She asked, as his lips twitched into a smile.
"I've found someone who's not going to leave me" Sawyer exclaimed, before leaning forward to press a chaste kiss to her lips.
Kali felt her chest grow tight at the fond look in his eyes, knowing just how wrong he was. She was going to break his heart and there was nothing she could do to stop it. She hoped in the end he would understand why she lied to him. She couldn't bear the thought of him hating her.
"I don't want to change, James. I...I want you to always be you" Kali confessed, watching as his features softened.
He reached out to touch her cheek, before pulling her back into a searing kiss, enjoying the feeling of having her so close. Once the kiss was broken, they remained leaning against each other, neither opening their eyes, not wanting the moment to end. They knew the next day would likely bring nothing good, but at least for that night, they had each other.
After sleeping peacefully for a few hours, the pair soon put their plan in place. Juliet stayed with Jack the entire morning until he passed her a pack and she began to disappear into the jungle. Kali and Sawyer stayed close on her trail, travelling for a few hours in the opposite direction of the camp. Eventually, Juliet came to a halt underneath a large tree with a strange symbol carved into the bark. She had known exactly where to go. They watched as Juliet dug into the soil beneath the tree, soon pulling out a briefcase as the two made their presence known.
"Step away from the case" Sawyer called out, as Juliet's head snapped up.
"It's full of medical supplies. They're for Claire. Jack knows all about it" Juliet explained, reluctantly standing up and taking a step back.
"Jack ain't here right now, is he?" Sawyer retorted, as Kali leaned down to open the case, finding four vials inside, full of an amber liquid.
"I'm telling the truth" Juliet insisted, as Kali slammed the case lid shut.
"I don't doubt that what's in this case will make Claire all better, Juliet. In fact, I'm sure it will...because you're the one who did this to her, aren't you?" Kali guessed, squaring up to the older woman.
"You don't understand...pregnant women on this island, they don't just get sick. They die, Kali. All of them" Juliet admitted, as Kali's mind instantly went to Sun.
"And this cures them?" Kali frowned.
"Claire was our control case. She conceived off the island. I was able to make these shots to keep her healthy. Her and the baby" Juliet went on.
"So, anyone who gets pregnant on this island...dies?" Sawyer questioned, with wide eyes, as Juliet nodded.
"I need to get this back to Claire. She doesn't have long" Juliet explained, trying to step past Kali, who grabbed her arm, roughly.
"I wanted to trust you, Juliet. I really did, but your lying" Kali exclaimed, as Juliet pulled her arm away from Kali's grip.
"I'm not!" Juliet argued, making Kali scoff.
"Manipulation 101. Orchestrate an event that leads to you being the hero. Everyone will feel too guilty to suspect you. They begin to trust you" Kali told her.
"I don't know what you're talking about-" Juliet began, but Kali quickly cut her off.
"Please. Like it's a coincidence that Claire magically gets sick the second you turned up. You did this to her!" Kali insisted, angrily.
"How? I haven't been near her. When could I have possibly done this?" Juliet retorted.
"You people had her for days. You made her into a ticking time bomb, ready to activate whenever you needed it. Did you really think we'd be so fucking stupid?" Kali spat out, as Juliet pursed her lips.
"...Have you told Jack?" Juliet asked, watching Kali shake her head.
"Like Jack would believe us" Sawyer muttered.
"Look, I didn't have a choice, okay? Ben is-" Juliet started, but Kali cut her off again.
"You want to make this right?" Kali asked, as Juliet nodded quickly.
"You signed up to be Ben's little spy? You're ours now. You tell us everything" Kali explained, as Juliet sighed.
"Claire still needs this. If we don't..." Juliet trailed off, feeling something dripping down her lip.
"Your nose is bleeding" Kali frowned, as Juliet wiped at the blood with the back of her hand, fear etched over her features.
"It...it's nothing" Juliet shook her head, trying to hide the panic in her voice.
"It's not for the first either, is it?" Kali guessed, as Juliet's eyes narrowed.
"You too?" Juliet realised, as Sawyer nodded, remembering his own nose bleed from a few days prior.
"I had this weird tremor in my hand last week. Pins and needles, my whole arm went numb" Kali admitted, as Sawyer shot her a look.
"You never told me that" He mumbled; eyes full of concern.
"I didn't want to worry you" Kali sighed, feeling guilty.
"...I've had it too. But in my leg. I couldn't move it for almost an hour a few weeks back and then suddenly, it was just back to normal. Like nothing ever happened" Juliet confessed.
"Locke had something similar happen when he was crawling over the pylons" Kali murmured, only growing more confused.
"Well, what the hell do the four of us have in common?" Sawyer questioned.
"I don't think we should stay on this island long enough to find out" Juliet warned, making Kali gulp, knowing that wasn't an option for her.
The next morning, Kali woke with a smile as she felt a soft kiss pressed to her cheek, and a strong arm wrapping around her waist. She had administered the shot to Claire as soon as they had arrived back to camp and within a few hours, she was awake, not seeming to remember anything that happened. She was safe, for now. Everyone seemed to trust Juliet now, after finding out she had found the cure for Claire's mysterious illness. But at least they knew the truth. Despite knowing Juliet had been sent to their camp as a mole, Kali still had the strange urge to trust her. Her eyes fluttered open as Sawyer pulled her closer to his bare chest, continuing to pepper kisses down her neck. She giggled as his hand dipped underneath her shirt, his cold fingertips tickling against her stomach.
"Morning, baby" He mumbled, in a deep voice.
"I could get used to getting woken up like this" Kali grinned, turning over to face him.
"Well, I'm only getting started" Sawyer grinned, pushing her onto her back, and pressing his lips to hers, his tongue darting out.
"We should probably...talk about...Juliet" Kali stated, in between his kisses.
"I'd rather do this" Sawyer replied, leaning down to nip at her neck.
"Not just about her. What she said. About the pregnant women" Kali pointed out, feeling Sawyer go still.
"Sun?" He asked, pulling away a little.
"She said all the pregnant women died. If Sun conceived here...should we tell her?" Kali questioned, as Sawyer ran a hand through his hair.
"We should find out everything blondie knows first. Then decide" Sawyer suggested.
"And then there's the other thing..." Kali trailed off, biting her lip.
"What?" Sawyer frowned.
"Well, it's definitely not a good idea to get pregnant-" Kali began, as Sawyer cut her off with a smug look.
"Were you planning on seducing me, Miss Dixon?" Sawyer smirked, trailing his finger down her jaw.
"I'm serious. The last thing we need is you knocking me up" Kali giggled, slapping his shoulder, playfully.
"I think I have just the solution for that" Sawyer grinned, turning onto his other side and rummaging through his book pile, pulling out a handful of condoms.
"Someone's been planning, huh?" Kali teased, as Sawyer quirked an eyebrow, before leaning forward to kiss her, his hands tangling into her hair.
They both jumped when the flap to their tent was suddenly pulled open and Desmond came racing in, coming to a halt when he saw their intimate embrace. They pulled away quickly, as Sawyer flopped onto his back with a groan, wondering how many more times they could get interrupted. Desmond rubbed at the back of his neck, turning away from them, appearing a little taken aback.
"This better be important" Sawyer muttered.
"I was just coming to see if you two would want to go...camping" Desmond exclaimed, as Kali's eyes narrowed.
"Camping?" She tried to clarify.
"I thought a few of us could trek along the beach. Get away from all this for a night" Desmond explained.
"It's not really a good time-" Kali began, but Sawyer quickly cut her off.
"You sure about that? It could be good to get some privacy" Sawyer said, emphasising the last word, quirking an eyebrow.
"...Oh. Right. Sounds good" Kali smirked, as the pair shared a look.
"Alright, we leave in two hours. Bring your tent" Desmond told them, before making a speedy exit.
"Well, that didn't seem suspicious at all, huh?" Kali scoffed, as Sawyer pushed himself to his feet.
"We'll figure it out on the road. Get packing" Sawyer insisted, nudging her with his foot.
"Someone seems excited" She teased.
"Getting to spend the night with my girlfriend away from camp? What's not to like?" Sawyer replied, grabbing his pack, tensing when he realised what he had just said.
"Girlfriend?" Kali grinned, jumping to her feet.
"I mean...I figured...that's what you want right?" Sawyer asked, as he felt Kali's arms wrap around his waist from behind.
"You know we've basically been dating unofficially for months now?" Kali pointed out, knowing he was internally freaking out.
"Well, now it's official" Sawyer grinned, turning around to wrap his arms around.
"Your ass is mine" He went on, with a dirty grin, lowering his hands to grab her ass.
"So romantic" Kali sniggered, with a roll of her eyes, before pressing a quick kiss to his lips.
Desmond was busy packing his own things, his brow furrowed with guilt. He knew what could happen going on his impromptu camping trip. He could find Penny...and lose Charlie. Should he have told them what the risks were, would they still come with him? He had a feeling Kali would, but the others...he wasn't so sure. His head snapped up when he heard a twig snapping from the treeline, his jaw dropping open when he found familiar eyes staring back at him. Kali's brother placed his finger to his lips, before ushering for Desmond to follow him further into the jungle. Reluctantly, Desmond did as he was told, hoping he wasn't making a mistake.
"Have you seen it? The crash?" Ken spoke quickly, having hid behind a nearby tree.
"How do you know about that?" Desmond frowned.
"Does it really matter? Are you taking the others?" Ken asked, as Desmond nodded, slowly.
"You'll want to bring a first aid kit. They'll be hurt" Ken advised.
"So, I'm right? Penny's coming to the island?" Desmond pushed, as Ken pursed his lips.
"This is the way you'll get back to her" Ken answered, vaguely.
"You need to make sure my sister goes with you. She's the only person who'll be able to save them" Ken insisted, a second later.
"And get us off this island?" Desmond went on, as Ken nodded, stiffly.
"...The cure. Is it real?" Desmond asked, watching Ken's jaw tense, giving him no response.
"But then Kali can't leave the island!" Desmond pointed out.
"She can" Ken retorted, with downcast eyes.
"How?! She'll..." Desmond trailed off, his eyes widening.
"It'll be better for her this way" Ken murmured, as Desmond lunged forward, grabbing the collar of his shirt.
"You're talking about your sister dying! How can you be bloody okay with that?" Desmond cried, angrily.
"Because if she doesn't, then everyone else dies. Everyone. Including your precious girlfriend" Ken told him, as Desmond's hand dropped away from his shirt, in shock.
"What the hell does that mean?" Desmond frowned.
"You don't want to know, Desmond. Trust me, you really don't" Ken shook his head, before turning on his heel and racing away from the other man, leaving Desmond speechless.
