"Well, well, well. What have I done to earn a visit from the Island's favourite couple?" Ben goaded, as he watched Sawyer and Kali enter his makeshift cell, his eyes flickering to the pocketknife in the latter's hands.

It had been a day since Kali had seen what was inside Ben's safe, and she had told Sawyer everything she knew. They didn't need any more secrets between them. More than they already had, she thought to herself. Sawyer had insisted he would accompany her on her next visit to Ben, worried about his girlfriend's safety when it came to the sly man.

"I want to know why you have Penny Widmore's father on a tape in your safe beating some guy to a pulp" Kali explained, grabbing a barrel and pulling it over to Ben, so she could sit in front of him.

"So, it's true. You do know who Charles is. Interesting. I'm guessing it was Desmond who told you?" Ben queried.

"Uh-uh. I'm the one asking the questions here. And you're answering them if you want to keep all your fingers" Kali threatened, waving her knife in his face.

"...You two make a very violent couple, do you know that?" Ben mocked, as Kali rolled her eyes.

"These clever little quips are getting old fast, Benjamin" Kali insisted.

"What do you want to know?" Ben retorted.

"How does Charles know about this island?" Kali asked, as Ben seemed to mull over her words for a moment.

"He used to live here" Ben admitted, watching Kali's eyes go wide.

"So, he's trying to find the island...the boat. It's not Penny's...shit, it's her dad's, isn't it?" Kali realised, as Ben nodded.

"Charles Widmore will do anything and everything to get back to this island. He'll kill us all without sparing a second thought" Ben went on, as Sawyer took a step forward.

"And you didn't think it would be a good idea to share this with the class?" Sawyer scoffed.

"I doubted any of would trust me" Ben pointed out.

"The boat's still our best shot off the island—" Kali began, but Ben was quick to cut her off.

"Not for you" Ben huffed, with an amused smile.

"The hell does that mean?" Sawyer frowned, as Kali sent Ben a murderous look.

"How do you know all this? Cause' as much as you like to act like you are, you're not God, Ben. Which means someone's helping you" Kali theorised, as Ben's smirk grew.

"Correct. They're an old friend of yours actually" Ben told her, causing Kali's brow to furrow.

"The spy on the boat? I want a name. And I'm not asking twice" Kali stated.

"...Michael" Ben confessed, watching the colour drain from Kali's face.

"Bullshit. That's...that's bullshit. Michael's gone. He sold us out and left with Walt" Kali exclaimed, pushing up from where she had been sitting.

"And I brought him back. Oh, Kali. Haven't you realised yet? No one ever really leaves this island" Ben scoffed, as Kali leaned down to come face to face with Ben.

"Just fucking watch us" Kali spat out.

She then turned on her heel, planning to storm out of the room when she found a familiar face in the doorway. Locke. He had heard everything. And by the expression on his face, he was pissed that Kali and Sawyer had gone behind his back.

"I think it's time for you two to leave. I need to speak to Ben. Alone" Locke announced, as Kali pursed her lips, looking to Sawyer.

He gave a quick nod, deciding it wasn't worth the fight. Both of them were in too much shock to argue. Michael was back. The man who had let Kali drown, who had sold them out to Ben, who was the last person to see Billy alive...

Michael had to have some answers. Answers that Kali desperately needed.

Juliet wasn't sure what was more disturbing. Seeing her dead boyfriend's wife, or the fact that Ben still seemed to know exactly where she would be. She had been fast on the heels of Charlotte and Daniel, who had disappeared into the night, when Harper, her former therapist had come across her, with a message from Ben. From the way the other woman was glaring at her, it was clear time hadn't changed the hatred she had toward her.

"How can Ben possibly know where they are when he's a prisoner?" Juliet asked, after Harper had given her the pair's location.

"Ben is exactly where he wants to be" Harper stated, as Juliet's eyes narrowed.

"How am I supposed to stop them?" Juliet pushed.

"By pointing the gun and pulling the trigger" Harper retorted, as Juliet's eyes darted to something behind Harper's shoulder.

"Kinda' like this?" A familiar voice suggested, before a gunshot rang out through the jungle.

Juliet gaped as Ken came into view, his gun still raised, eyes focused on Harper, who let out a cry, clutching her now bleeding arm. She reached for something in her pocket, but her movements halted as Ken raised his gun to aim at her head.

"You even blink and you get a bullet between the eyes" Ken warned, as Juliet was quick to push herself in between them.

"Ken put the gun down" Juliet told him, as Ken pursed his lips but reluctantly did as he was ordered.

"She could—" Ken began, but was cut off as they heard whispers suddenly surround them, as they both whipped around to face where the sound came from.

The whispers then stopped as soon as they had started, but still, the pair were on high alert. They twisted back around to face Harper, but somehow, she had already disappeared. Ken looked down to the forest floor, hoping to find her tracks but due to the heavy rain pelting down on them, the trail was already lost.

"Friend of yours?" Ken asked.

"Something like that" Juliet murmured, rushing off in the opposite direction she had come from.

"Now, where are you going?" Ken grumbled, quick to follow her.

"Faraday and Charlotte are heading for the Tempest" Juliet informed him, as Ken raised his arms up in exasperation.

"And that means what exactly?" Ken pushed, as Juliet shook her head.

"It's safer for you if I don't talk about it" Juliet stated, as Ken reached out to grab her wrist, stopping her in her tracks.

"And since when do you care about my safety, huh? Besides, if you hadn't noticed, I can handle myself, Jules" Ken insisted, his hand still wrapped around her wrist.

"It's an electrical station that powers the Island" Juliet admitted.

"Okay, so they're planning to switch off our power? Big deal" Ken shrugged.

"And release a toxic gas that will kill everyone on the island" Juliet added, as Ken's mouth went slack.

"Alright. That's not great" Ken nodded, releasing her arm and beginning to race off in the direction she had been headed in.

"What are you waiting for? It's time to play hero, right?" Ken insisted, ushering her over to him.

"Thank you" Juliet exclaimed, glad he wasn't asking her any more questions, earning a curt nod in return.

The pair sprinted through the jungle all night, glad that the rain finally stopped as the sun rose in the sky. Their clothes and hair soon dried out in the humid climate, as sweat once again began to glisten on their skin. Despite being fitter than most, even Ken was starting to struggle with the trek, announcing that he needed a break.

"You know, I remember that woman from last night. She was a therapist. Her husband got killed not long after I arrived" Ken suggested, watching how Juliet flinched at his words.

"The two of you friends?" Ken pushed.

"Not exactly. She never particularly liked me" Juliet muttered, as Ken quirked an eyebrow.

"I wasn't talking about her" He stated, as Juliet's eyes darted to the floor.

"I've been on the receiving end of a lot of anger in my life. But that woman...that was a different look. She was bitter. Scorned lover, kind of bitter" Ken went on.

"It's not really any of your business, is it?" Juliet responded, starting to walk away from him.

"Oh c'mon, what do you think I'm gonna' do, judge you? The skeletons in my closet are a lot worse than yours, trust me" Ken called after her, as Juliet let out a long sigh.

"I was sleeping with her husband. Goodwin. I...I was in love with him. And then he died" Juliet confessed, keeping her back to Ken.

"...That's rough, Jules" Ken answered, after a few moments of silence.

"That's rough?" Juliet snorted, turning to face him, with a look of disbelief.

"Comforting people is not really my strong suit. But you know, if you need a shoulder to cry on, or a quick shag in the forest, I'm your man" Ken told her, as she shook her head, fondly.

"I think I'll pass, thanks" Juliet laughed, as Ken came to stand by her side, able to see the guilt that was still plastered over her face.

"This might surprise you, but I actually happen to be a pretty good judge of character. And you, Juliet...don't have a bad bone in your body. So, whatever happened between you and this Goodwin...it wasn't your fault" Ken insisted, as Juliet bit her lip, nodding slowly.

"Yeah" She murmured, her eyes welling with tears.

"It wasn't your fault" Ken repeated, watching as a tear rolled down her cheek.

Juliet was then all but collapsing against him, hiding her face in his chest as Ken appeared taken aback. He didn't move until he felt Juliet's hands clutching at his shirt, feeling how sobs racked through her body. He slowly moved to wrap his arms around her, his touch gentle as if not to scare her off. Juliet only seemed to cry harder after this, unable to stop now she had started. Ken moved his hand up to her long hair, slowly stroking the silky blond strands, whispering soothing words in her ear. After a few minutes, Juliet went still in his arms, crying all the tears she had been holding in for far too long. She pulled away from him, her chin tucked into her chest, cheeks flushed in embarrassment.

"You know...when I said about being a shoulder to cry on, I wasn't really asking for you to drench my damn shoulder" Ken teased, gesturing to his damp shirt, causing a shaky laugh to leave Juliet's lips.

"C'mon, we still have a way to go" Juliet stated.

A few hours later they finally reached the Tempest, a station built into the side of a hill facing the ocean. Its large metal doors were hidden from almost every angle, a warning bell chiming from inside. Juliet immediately used a pulley system to open the doors, allowing them inside, where red lights were flashing.

"Warning. Computer switching to manual operation. This attempt is unauthorised" The computer system announced, as Juliet shared a look with Ken before they were both pulling out their guns.

"Guessing our friends beat us to it" Ken muttered, as they raced through the corridors of the station.

It soon brought them to a metal walkway above the large control centre, where they could see Daniel at work, a gas mask on his face. Ken stayed silent as he raised his gun toward the man, ready to shoot the scientist in the head without question. Juliet's hand suddenly shot up, shaking her head at him.

"No. We need to give him a chance to explain" Juliet hissed.

"I'm not really a talk first, shoot later kind of guy" Ken stated, his gun still raised in the air, as Juliet gave him a look.

"Trust me, okay?" Juliet insisted, reaching out to place her hands over his.

"I do. Just...don't make me regret it" Ken stated.

"I'll approach him first, you watch my back. I still can't spot Charlotte" Juliet advised, as Ken gave a silent nod.

Ken watched closely as Juliet approached a surprised Daniel, who ripped off his gas mask, eyes darting between the blonde and the computer. There was still no sign of Charlotte, but Ken guessed she was close by. The two had seemed inseparable so far.

"Juliet, this isn't what it looks like. I...I'm trying to make it safe. To render the gas inert. Look, you've got to believe me!" Daniel exclaimed, as Juliet's eyes narrowed.

Unbeknownst to her, Charlotte had snuck out of the shadows and was fast approaching her with a metal pipe. Ken raced across the room to stop her, as Charlotte raised the pipe in the air to strike Juliet in the back of the head. She frowned when she felt someone rip the pipe out of her hands, spinning around to find Ken glaring at her.

"That wasn't very polite, now was it?" Ken mocked, before sending a hard kick to the woman's chest, sending her stumbling toward the floor.

"Twenty seconds to contamination" A computer-automated voice announced, as Juliet turned her gun to Charlotte.

"Whatever he's doing, tell him to stop" Juliet warned, watching Charlotte rip off her gas mask.

"We're trying to disable it before he can use it against us! Juliet...look me in the eye and tell me you are certain that Benjamin Linus wouldn't use this gas to kill everyone on this island! We know he's used it before. If you want to stop us, you're going to have to shoot us both" Charlotte explained.

"She's got a point, Jules" Ken couldn't help but agree.

"Ten seconds to contamination," The automated voice told them, as panic grew on Charlotte's sweaty face.

"Daniel!" Charlotte cried, as Daniel continued typing furiously.

"Yeah, yeah! I'm trying!" Daniel exclaimed, knowing they were seconds away from dying.

Ken suddenly crouched down to grab Charlotte's discarded gas mask and placed it over Juliet's face before she could stop him. She looked up at him in disbelief, realising he was expecting the gas to be released and hoped the mask would save her. Ken's eyes darted to a countdown on the computer, feeling his hand shake, realising he was truly scared for once.

Five. Four. Three. Two...

Everyone in the group let out a sigh of relief when they saw the countdown stop, as Daniel collapsed against the computer. Ken slowly pulled the gas mask away from a confused Juliet, refusing to meet her eyes.

"Cutting it a bit bloody close, don't you think?" Ken huffed.

"You're welcome" Daniel muttered, as Ken gave him a look of disbelief, before raising his middle finger at the man.

After a few minutes of tense explanation, Daniel and Charlotte had managed to convince the pair that they posed no immediate danger to them or the rest of the group, and sent them back to the beach. They debated whether to tell the others what had happened, knowing it would only create a further divide in the group.

"Why did you do that?" Juliet inquired, as she closed the door to the station.

"Gonna' have to be a bit more specific, I've had a busy day" Ken teased.

"You gave me the gas mask. You could have taken it for yourself. But you didn't" Juliet pointed out, as Ken gave a small shrug.

"What I want to know is how Ben knew you were gonna' go after those two in the first place. Makes no sense" Ken huffed, completely ignoring her question.

"I don't know, but he knew how to get to me, and he knew where they were going and what they were doing. Don't you understand? These people came here to wage war against Ben, and Ben's going to win, Ken. And when he does, you don't want to be anywhere near me" Juliet explained, watching Ken frown.

"Why not?" Ken questioned, taking a step closer to her, seeing how her eyes had started to water.

"Because he thinks that I'm his" She cried, fear growing over her features.

"Hey, that son of a bitch is never gonna' get near you again, alright? You say the word, and I'll fucking kill him. You don't have to be scared anymore—" Ken began, but was quickly cut off by Juliet.

"That's not...that's not why I'm scared. If he finds out how I feel about you..." Juliet trailed off, averting her eyes to the ground.

Ken's hand was cupping her cheek a moment later, forcing her to meet his gaze, brushing away a tear that had rolled down her cheek. Before she could stop him, he was leaning in to press a kiss to her lips, causing her eyes to flutter shut. He was pulling away a moment later, his actions nervous and unsure, and not at all what Juliet was used to. Reaching up to the nape of his neck, she was crashing their lips together instinctively, as he eagerly returned the kiss. They were both breathless as they slowly pulled away, a light blush coating Juliet's cheeks.

"I guess actions do speak louder than words, huh?" Ken said, with a teasing grin, before pressing another kiss to Juliet's lips.

Kali let out a sigh of relief when she heard her brother's voice calling out to her through the walkie-talkie a day later, knowing she had a lot to tell him. She had to warn them who was really in charge of the boat and the danger they were in. Not to mention that Michael was somehow back.

"Can't believe I'm saying this, but it's damn good to hear your voice" Kali exclaimed, hearing a snort from the other end of the line.

"Well, aren't I blessed? Look, we've got a bit of a situation at camp" Ken informed her, instantly worrying his sister.

"What kind of situation? Is everyone alright?" Kali frowned.

"Yeah, they're fine. Just being emotional and shit. Your Korean buddy found out his wife was fucking another guy and he's got all weepy about it. Wanna' speak to him?" Ken offered, as Kali's mouth went slack.

"Sun cheated on Jin?" She gaped.

"Yeah, I'm not getting involved in this island drama. Hey, Jin! You want to vent to my sister?" She heard Ken call out.

"Oh, also...I totally made out with Juliet" Ken announced, as Kali's eyes almost popped out of her head.

"Ew! I seriously did not need to know that" Kali grimaced.

"Now you know how I feel every time someone brings up you and the hillbilly" Ken scoffed, causing her to roll her eyes.

"Wait...so do you actually like Juliet? Like...you're having feelings like a normal human being?" Kali went on, in a mocking tone.

"You wound me, Kal" Ken snorted, as she heard a scuffling on the other end of the line, guessing he was handing the walkie-talkie to Jin.

"Kali?" Jin's voice questioned, his voice thick as if he had been crying.

"Hey. Is...is it true?" Kali asked, hearing a shuffling sound from the other line.

"I can't see you nodding your head, you know" Kali stated, having to bite down her laugh, as she could guess what the older man was doing.

"She was with another man. Cheated. Baby...baby could be his" Jin explained, as any humour left Kali.

"I'm sorry. Really sorry. I can't imagine how you must be feeling...what are you going to do?" Kali inquired.

"Don't know. Hurt. Bad" Jin stated.

"I'm guessing it was before the plane crash?" Kali suggested, hearing another shuffling sound, as Jin nodded.

"Yes. Lonely. She said. Can't look at her" Jin told her, through his fragmented words.

"I'm totally on your side, Jin. One hundred per cent, but...you were a different man before you came to this island. Bad, sometimes" Kali pointed out.

"I changed" Jin retorted, as Kali pursed her lips.

"So, has Sun" Kali exclaimed, hearing a long sigh from the other end of the line.

"She cheated on a different man" Kali went on.

"Don't want to lose her...or baby" Jin admitted, as a small smile grew on Kali's face.

"Then don't. You still love her, right?" Kali questioned.

"Always" Jin replied, as Kali's eyes flickered over to Sawyer's, who had been listening into the conversation.

"Isn't that all that really matters then?" Kali suggested, hearing silence for a few moments.

"...You are good friend. I will speak to Sun" Jin told her.

"Good. I'll see you soon, okay?" Kali exclaimed, thinking she could hear how Jin smiled at her words.

"Yes. Soon. I miss you. And Sawyer" Jin confessed, earning a grin from the blond.

"We miss you too, buddy!" Sawyer called over.

"...Well, that was disgustingly sweet. How've things been over in Locke city?" Ken's voice came through the walkie-talkie, having taken the device back from Jin.

"You're probably gonna' want to sit down..." Kali trailed off, getting ready to tell him all she had found out.

Later that evening, Locke surprised them all by releasing Ben, who appeared far too smug for Kali's liking. As always, the man seemed to get what he wanted. Locke informed the rest of the group what Ben had decided to divulge, but Kali was sure there was still much unsaid. She couldn't stand to look at him for a moment later, opting to keep watch that night, knowing that Charles Widmore's men were likely closing in. Not that anyone else seemed worried. They had warm beds and showers for the first time in months, and everything else no longer mattered to them.

"You thinking what I'm thinking, blue eyes?" Sawyer asked, having joined her on watch.

"That things are about to get bad real fast?" Kali guessed.

"Apart from me, you and Locke, none of these people are fighters. If this Widmore sends his goons our way, we're screwed" Sawyer explained, as an idea formed in Kali's head.

"...Maybe not" Kali mumbled.

"You've got that look on your face" Sawyer sighed, as she raised an eyebrow.

"What face?" She responded.

"The 'I've got a crazy idea that is dangerous as hell but will probably end up saving the day' kind of face" Sawyer snorted, making Kali grin.

"You love that face" Kali smirked, leaning up to him on her tiptoes.

"I certainly do" He teased, pressing his lips to hers, cupping her cheek gently.

"So, what does this crazy idea involve?" He questioned, pulling back a little.

"Dynamite" She exclaimed, as realisation slowly dawned on Sawyer's own face.

"Ben's stash?" Sawyer guessed, earning a quick nod.

"Alright, you keep your eye out. I'll grab what we need" Sawyer stated, beginning to walk off toward Ben's house.

"Be careful!" Kali called after him, as he turned back to her with a broad smile.

"You know that's my middle name, baby" Sawyer retorted, as she shook her head, fondly.

Her eyes quickly began to survey the outskirts of the barracks, thinking where would be best to hide the explosives, ready for anyone who would want to attack. Would they need bait? Someone to lure attackers to where they needed to go—

"Kali?" A voice called out in the night, as Kali whipped around to find Alex approaching her, Karl and Rousseau staying a few metres back.

"Hey...what's with the bags?" Kali frowned, seeing the group were all carrying backpacks.

"We're leaving. My dad gave us a map. There's a temple not that far from here, a sanctuary he said—" Alex began, as Kali was quick to stop her.

"Your dad? The same guy who's a pathological liar? Alex, you can't trust him!" Kali exclaimed, as Alex pursed her lips.

"You really think I'll be safe here? If these people really are after my dad..." Alex trailed off, not wanting to think what they might do to her.

"So, you plan to run off into the jungle at night? How the hell is that safer?" Kali complained.

"I'm sorry, Kali. But my mind's made up. I just wanted to tell you...well, in case you wanted to come" Alex admitted, as Kali's gaze softened.

"Look, if you really want to go then just wait until the morning. We can tell the others and—" Kali started, but it was Alex who cut her off this time.

"I'm not even supposed to be telling you this. My dad will kill me" Alex sighed.

"Then why did you?" Kali frowned.

"Apart from Karl...I guess you and Sawyer are my only real friends" Alex shrugged, as Kali's lips twitched into a smile.

"There's really no stopping you, huh?" Kali questioned, as Alex shook her head.

"Take this then" Kali exclaimed, holding out her gun, which Alex took gratefully.

"And go fast. I'm serious, Alex. God knows what's out there. You keep your mom close, she'll look after you" Kali went on.

"Be careful" Alex murmured, as she reached out to pull Kali into a hug, which she instantly returned.

"You too" Kali replied, giving Alex a quick squeeze before pulling away.

"And say thanks to your brother. I probably wouldn't have made it this far without him" Alex added, as Kali nodded.

Karl was then approaching the pair, slinging his arm around Alex's shoulder and ushering her toward the treeline. Kali and Rousseau shared a look as the older woman walked past her. Kali's message was clear. Keep her safe. She didn't want to lose anyone else.

Jack winced as he crouched down inside the medical tent, looking through the few medications they had been able to scavenge over the last few months. He had been suffering from pain in his stomach for the last couple of days on and off and had been trying to ignore it. But that morning, he had woken up sweating, and nauseous. It was starting to become impossible to ignore.

"Wow, you look like shit. What's up with you?" Ken's voice boomed over his shoulder, causing Jack to jump out of his skin.

He quickly tried to rack his brain for a lie, opening and closing his mouth a few times, before Ken was chucking his walkie-talkie toward him.

"I'm kidding, I don't actually care. My sister is on the line, says she wants to chat" Ken informed him, before walking off with his hands in his pockets.

"You there, Doc?" Kali's voice called out over the device, right on cue.

"I'm here. Everything alright at the barracks?" Jack inquired, sitting down on the sand with a groan.

"Things are quiet. A little too quiet. Feels like the calm before the storm, you know?" Kali stated.

"You guys need anything?" Jack offered, hearing Kali laugh from the other end of the line.

"This might surprise you, Jack, but this is a social call for once. I've missed your annoying ass" Kali teased, making Jack chuckle, the movement causing him to let out another groan of pain.

"You okay?" Kali asked.

"Yeah. Yeah, I'm good. Just didn't sleep well" Jack lied.

"You're a terrible liar, you know that?" Kali scoffed, as a pained smile broke out on Jack's face.

"One of my many flaws I guess" Jack murmured.

"You don't sound like yourself, Jack" Kali insisted, as Jack dropped his head into his hands.

"I'm fine. Just...got a stomach bug" Jack informed her.

"You're definitely not fine, are you? How much have drunk this morning? Any nausea?" Kali pushed.

"I told you, I'm fine. I outrank you, remember?" Jack mocked, hearing her huff.

"Jackass" Kali mumbled, softly.

"Look, uh, I've gotta' go. But we'll talk soon, alright?" Jack suggested, wanting to get off the line before he vomited.

"Alright. Just...look after yourself, okay? We need you, Jack" Kali told him, before stopping the call, leaving Jack alone with his thoughts.

2007

Jack rubbed a hand over his bloodshot eyes, before fumbling with the keys in his hand. He managed to open the lock to the controlled drugs cupboard, his hands instantly reaching for the oxycodone inside. Without a second thought, he grabbed one of the packets and emptied the contents into his mouth, scrunching his eyes shut. He then slammed the glass cabinet closed, grimacing when he saw his reflection. He had been wearing the same shirt for three days, dark circles had grown under his eyes, and his beard looked unkempt and a mess. Stumbling back into the other room, he went to hang the key back up where he found it. Just as he was about to leave the hospital office, his feet came to a sudden halt, his heart following suit.

"Stealing Oxy from where you used to work? Yeah...you're totally fine" Kali scoffed, leaning against the door in front of him, her arms crossed.

"I'm not...I'm not having this conversation again" Jack muttered, running a hand over his face.

"Well, I hate to break it to you, but I'm the only one you've got left" Kali pointed out, as Jack clenched his jaw.

"Leave me alone" Jack told her, walking toward her, and grabbing her arms to push her out of the way.

"No. I'm not gonna' watch you destroy yourself any longer" Kali complained, shoving him away from her.

"You'd know all about that, wouldn't you? Why...why do you think I've ended up like this, huh? You think you can help me?! You can't!" Jack yelled, watching her flinch at his raised voice.

"So, what? You're just gonna' throw your life away? You got out, Jack! You're still alive, why the fuck are you wasting that?" Kali retorted.

"Because you're still there!" Jack exclaimed, his eyes welling with tears.

"Because...because I couldn't save you" Jack cried, scrunching his eyes shut, before falling to his knees, the oxycodone having taken its effect.

By the time he opened his eyes again, Kali was gone. Not that she had ever really been there. Only an echo of his drug-hazed mind. That's all he had now of the family he had made on the island. Memories.
