Thank you for reading. I really hope that you are still enjoying the story. This chapter is important because it begins to set up the final arch of the story. As I warned at the end of the last chapter the story is not going to have a happy ending. I hope that it will be a fitting end to the story and that the characters ending will make sense. It will be more bittersweet I think than a totally sad ending. I really hope that doesn't put anyone of continuing to read the story or ruin the story for them.
At first Leon thought that Merlin had been unable to help him recall his memories any better, but as he spelt it all came back to him. He woke with a start and the tried to calmly recall the dream he had just had and quickly realised that it was not a dream it was the memory that he was trying to recall. He cautioned himself that he might not be remembering things as they had truly happened. His recollection of what happened after he had been thrown backwards could not be fully trusted. He had taken a blow to the head and what he saw was so far away. He could easily be seeing things incorrectly because of the angle he was looking from. He told himself this as he tried to fall back asleep and then when he awake after a troubled night of half sleep. He kept on telling himself the same thing as he dressed and headed to get some breakfast. He continued telling himself more firmly as he caught sight of Mordred sitting with their fellow knight eating his breakfast. It didn't seem to matter how many timed he told himself it, he just couldn't make himself believe it. Deep down he knew that what he saw was the truth. Kara had stabbed Uther killing him.
The knight had gone back and forth with when he should tell Arthur what he had learned. At first he had thought about waiting until after the wedding, but he didn't feel that he could keep something so important from him, even for another day. So he made his way to Arthur's rooms while his fellow knights where heading to the great hall for the wedding ceremony.
Leon had not expected to find Gwen and Morgana with the king. He caught Morgana's eyes as he entered the room and for a second he felt the words he wanted to say stuck in his throat. The three monarchs stood staring at him waiting for him to speak. Whatever the knight had to say must be of great importance if he needed to speak to Arthur about it right now. He cleared his throat as best as he could and tried to speak.
"I have something I need to speak to you about your highness." Leon finally got out. Looking only at Arthur as he did and bowing when he finished talking."
"Can't it wait." Arthur asked, sounding more surprised than annoyed.
For a second it looked like Leon would agree that it could wait, but in the end he pressed on. "I'm afraid not."
Gwen and Morgana shared a look at this and began to leave.
"Actually, I thinks its best if you hear this as well." Leon said to the queens. Feeling a little bolder. It seemed better to get the worst of it over with and tell as many people as possible at the same time.
"What's the matter." Gwen asked seeing the worry on Leon's face.
"It's about king Uther's death." He began. Seeing Morgana tense up at the mention of the former king. "It was not an accident. He was murdered."
"What are you talking about." Arthur demanded. Suddenly very interested in what the knight had to say now.
Leon took in a deep breath. "I believe that Kara stabbed the king ."
"You should make absolutely certain before you accuse someone of murder." Morgana said in a cold tone as she stepped forward, Her eyes set on Leon. Also suddenly now interested, but for very different reasons than Arthur.
"I know what I saw." Leon said trying to sound more confident than he felt and met Morgana harsh gaze, but shied away slightly.
"I believe, is not certain and you were unconscious. How can you be sure of anything you say." Morgana questioned. Her voice rising as she went on.
Gwen the closest to Morgana felt her distress and worry growing and lifted hand to place reassuringly on her shoulder, but stopped herself. Her husband needed her support to and she suddenly felt she was being pulled in two directions. That she couldn't support one without hurting the other, so she stayed still and quiet. Knowing she would have to take on role of the mediator when the unfortunately inevitable argument began.
"I couldn't remember at first." Leon began, choosing to focus on Arthur and try and not met Morgana's gaze any further. "But Merlin helped me."
Morgana's eyes widened as a ice cold pain shot right through her. What had Merlin to do with any of this.
"Brought the memory forward with magic. I didn't think it worked at first, but when I was sleeping I dreamt-"
"A dream. You are accusing a young women of murdering a king based on a dream you had." Morgana mocked.
"You of all people should know that some dreams can't simply be ignored." Arthur said in an even tone, but there was a hint of irritation to it that Morgana did not like.
"There is a very large difference." Morgana bite back sounding insulted.
Arthur did not say anything for a short while no one did. An strained quiet feel over the room that had only a few minuets ago was filled with bubbling excitement.
"Bring her here." Arthur finally said. Morgana was about to interject, but Arthur didn't let her. "We have to here from her."
It was a reasonable request so Morgana didn't argue, but she did object to Leon being the one to bring Kara here. Gwen offered to go and bring Kara back. She would make up some excuse, like Morgana wanted to speak with her or needed her help with something. Everyone agreed to this plan and Gwen left. Leaving the tense atmosphere. When she stepped out of the room she felt her body relax. Quickly she made her way to the great hall, not giving herself a chance to think to much about what was going on. What would happen if Leon was proven to be correct.
The three left behind stayed silent. There was a lot to be said, but nothing could be said until they heard from Kara. She had to be allowed to defend herself against Leon's accusation. The knight kept his head lowered, having the decency to look ashamed of himself. Morgana was not appeased and continued to stare harshly at him. Arthur was beginning to worry that if she stared like that any longer than Leon might burst into flames or worse. He was about to say something, he didn't know what exactly, just something to break the tension. Before he had the chance to say anything Gwen returned with a totally unaware Kara.
Kara had been standing towards the front of those gathered in the hall next to Mordred. Since she only had the cloths that she arrived in Morgana had told her to take what she wanted from her wardrobe. So Kara was currently wearing Morgana's purple velvet dress. It was the soft fabric that appealed to her. She had never felt any fabric so soft. It had to be taken in but it suited her and she wore it proudly. After Gwen had asked her to follow her to see Morgana she quickly moved to follow the queen, but not before she kissed Mordred on the check.
Kara first met Morgana's eyes and she smiled at her. Told her she looked beautiful as she entered the room and Morgana moved quickly to her side. The bride Kara now realised looked angry and she couldn't understand why.
The king spoke before she had a chance to ask Morgana what was wrong.
"Thank you for coming." Kara turned to him and gave a slight bow. "Leon believes that he had remembered something about what happened before you and Mordred found him unconscious."
"What's that." Kara couldn't help but blurt out. Her heart was beginning to race. She hoped no one would notice.
Morgana took another step closer to Kara. "Your scaring her."
Arthur looked to Morgana but he pressed on. "Tell us what you remember." He asked hoping he sounded more gentle.
Kara took in a deep and told the story that she had Mordred and agreed on. She didn't waiver. Morgana looked a little smugly towards Leon, who still avoided looking directly at her or Kara now as well. The knight then told what he now remembered. As he spoke Kara had to fight to slow her heart from racing as Leon tell them all what had really happened. It was only for a fraction of a second, but panic flashed across her eyes. Morgana saw and a cold wave of terror washed over her as she realised that Leon was right, Kara had killed Uther.
"Is there anything that you wish to say now." Arthur turned from Leon back to Kara. Who shook her head in answer. "So you deny what Leon is saying."
"Yes your highness." She said as confidently as she could.
"There." Morgana quickly snapped before anyone else could say anything else. "Sir Leon was confusing a dream with a memory." She mocked. "Today is mine and Merlin's wedding. Can we now please get back to that."
Before anyone could appose her request she placed an arm around Kara's shoulder and began to pulled her towards the door. Gwen too on Morgana's other side began to move to leave and finally begin the wedding ceremony. Leon looked dejected, his head lowered as he too began to move to leave. Beginning now to think that he might have been wrong. That it was just a dream. He had wanted to fill in the missing minuets and his brain had created something to fill that time.
Only Arthur remained where he stood not moving. As he tried to decide what, who he believed. Leon seemed so sure, but Kara had remained clear about her version of events. Not changing from the first time he heard them. Leon now looked unsure of even how to move forward. Kara seemed calm, but he was sure that when he looked her in the eye she looked frightened. She was, the king reasoned a young women brought with no warning before her king and queen to be accused of killing the old king. Anyone would be nervous, that was normal. Was it more though, he wasn't sure.
In the end it was Morgana that gave away that something was not right. She was so desperate to end the conversation. Again that was a normal reaction. Arthur though believed he knew her well enough to now when Morgana was deflecting something. And he believed that was what she was doing now.
"What of Mordred." The three women turned back to face the king. "Where was he." He asked Leon.
Morgana looked shocked. "Your trying to blame Mordred." She accused Arthur. "You know how much being a knight of Camelot means to him. Do you really think he risk all of that for..." She couldn't finish.
"Revenge." Arthur offered.
"Arthur." Gwen said sounding surprised and a little disappointed.
"Mordred would never do anything so cowardly." Morgana stated firmly. "And you know that."
The knight lifted his gaze to the king. "I..."He thought hard. "I don't know sire." He finally said to answer Arthur's question.
Arthur nodded. "Bring him here."
"No." Both Morgana and Kara said at almost the same time.
Morgana removed her hand from Kara's shoulder and moved towards Arthur. "Today is my wedding day. Please don't ruin that." She pleaded.
Arthur looked sympathetically towards his sister. "I know, but-"
"Don't. There is no way for you to end that sentence and not be a-"
"Remember who you are talking to." Arthur finally snapped.
The young king had did his best to remain calm and he had allowed everyone the opportunity to speak freely and listen to what everybody had to say. But they were talking about his father's death. A death that he had come to accept, but now there was the chance that someone that meant a great deal to someone that he had so much hope for had killed his father. It was getting hard to remain calm and Morgana was making it harder. He understood that she was with the expectation of Kara the most scared person here, but he had his limit.
"You would do well to remember who are are talking to as well." Morgana said coldly. "I am the queen of Avalon and as such, no matter where they choice to live every single person with the gift of magic is under my protection. Even against you." She calmly threatened.
Things were quickly beginning to escalate and if they were not careful then someone might say or do something that they would come to regret. Something that they could not take back.
Knowing that she needed calm the situation quickly Gwen stepped between the two siblings. "We all need to remember who we are speaking with, family. Lets not say what we can not take back."
At the queens wise words Arthur and Morgana seemed to deflate from their anger.
The door was suddenly pushed open and Merlin entered the room. He knew that the bride was often late, but it was getting a little a little ridicules now. He waited patiently in the small anti room next to the great hall alone waiting for Arthur to join him and the ceremony to begin, but he couldn't wait any longer. He'd gone to Morgana's chambers first, but no one was there. He's then gone to Arthur's and Gwen's which where one floor up. As he stepped onto the corridor he could hear raised voice coming from the Arthur's office. It was hard to tell what was being said, but as he got closer he could make out Arthur and then Morgana's voice. He could only get every couple of words, but it did not sound good.
As soon as he had pushed the door open he went straight to his wife, who was luckily close to the door. He wrapped his arm around her shoulder and Morgana let him pulled her into his side. Feeling grateful for the support.
"What is going on." Merlin asked. Directing the question to Arthur with a hint of warning to his voice.
There had not been many times in the years they had known each other were Merlin or Arthur had raised their voices to each other. Even less were Merlin would have dared use such a tone towards the king. Arthur was shocked by the tone, but did his best to not let it show. He quickly explained to Merlin what was going on. Morgana watched Merlin's face as Arthur spoke. It had been for just a second but she was sure she saw a look of irritation cross his face. At first she thought it was irritation at Leon for dragging all this up right before their wedding and she was sure that was a part of it. She was also very sure that a part of her husband was irritated with Mordred and Kara, partly too for starting all of this in the first place. Deep down she was too, but she also knew deep down Merlin had never fully trusted Mordred and this, if it was true would be proving him right.
"So what happens now." Merlin asked.
No one wanted to answer at first. Scared to dig their heels into a position they couldn't back out of.
Arthur eventually broke the silence. "We have to hear what Mordred has to say."
Merlin nodded, agreeing with Arthur but Morgana stepped slightly out of his hold and didn't notice. "You already know what he will say. It's two people's word against one's possible compromised memory."
"We still need to know what Mordred has to say now." Arthur was not swayed. Instead he turned from Morgana to Merlin. "When you helped Leon, did you see anything."
Morgana now turned as well to look at her husband. She smiled a little. This could all be resolved if Merlin didn't give any support to Leon's version of event. If he said he didn't see anything and that there was no guarantee that what Leon dreamed was a real memory. That might be the end of all this. Arthur trusted Merlin more than anyone else apart from Gwen. Merlin met her eyes for a second then he looked back at Arthur.
"I didn't see any of Leon's memories. I have never used magic like that, so I can't vouch for its accuracy." It was not the definitive rebuttal of Leon's idea that she had hoped for, but it was a point in Kara and Mordred's favour. "From my experience though, dreams that seem real feel that way because they are."
Morgana looked at Merlin her mouth slightly open, at a loss for words. Why had he felt the need to add that. He's answered the question. He didn't need to say anything else. Was he trying to cause trouble for Mordred and Kara.
Arthur listened to Merlin. Thinking carful over what he had said. Thinking over what everyone had said in the last few minuets. It was a lose, lose situation. Whatever he choice it would hurt someone, himself included. He trusted Merlin and Leon, they had always supported him. Even when Merlin had kept something from him, lied to him to keep his secret he could understand that he was protecting himself and not trying to hurt him. He had known Leon almost his whole life. He had never known him to lie. So why would he now. The knight seemed to be getting on well with Mordred, so he didn't think it was motivated by any personal grudge. He expected Morgana to defend the young couple. Mordred had been nothing but hardworking and honest from the second he arrived in Camelot. He fit in well and had become well liked. The king had grown found of him too. He didn't want to believe that he could be capable of something like what he and Kara were accused of.
"Bring Mordred-"
"No." This time it was just Kara that shouted. Moving quickly to the centre of the room. "He didn't do anything."
"We need to hear from him." Arthur said as gently, yet firmly as he could.
Kara had felt every nerve in her body on edge since she was brought here. She had took in deep shallow breaths, to try and calm herself, but it wasn't doing any good. It was one thing to be forced to try and defend herself against something you had done, it was something completely different to have Mordred possibly being blamed for her actions. She couldn't let that happen. Mordred didn't deserve that.
"I did it." Kara blurted out.
If she was asked later why she confessed when she didn't have to, When she could have continued to deny everything, she would have said that believed she would be alright. That somehow things would work out. That Morgana and Mordred could find a way out. They could all leave and never come back. She just couldn't stand to see Mordred, who had been nothing but loyal to Arthur have his name slandered like this. After everything he had given to be here, to be a knight. Surprisingly she found too that she didn't think she could continue to lie to Arthur's face. She had thought she could, but she was not as cold as she thought. Arthur deserved to know how his father died. So she told him, told everyone.
"I was controlling the fire, I didn't see him approach, but Mordred did. He didn't know who he was, he just reacted. He thought I was in danger."
Arthur felt his heart racing as he listened to Kara speak. Though he maintained a blank face. Whatever had happened, looking at her, listening to her, He couldn't see her as a cold and calculating killer.
Morgana felt her hear drop to the floor. Kara's words sounded far away and she couldn't focus her eyes on anything. Every part of her was screaming to do something, anything now before it was to late, but she couldn't move.
Kara kept talking, explaining. Her head lowered. "He was still alive, but unconscious. Mordred left to cheek on Leon...He was starting to wake up...and I...I just. I didn't think. I just felt...All of the fear and pain...I." She took in one large breath. "I'm sorry. You didn't deserve to lose him that way." She lifted her eyes a little to see Arthur gave the smallest nod. "But." She couldn't help but continue now. "I didn't deserve to lose my family because of him. His fear and hate. We, those like me-"
"Kara." Morgana warned as she moved to stand next to her, wrapping a protective arm around her shoulder. "Anyone like us would have done the same." She said looking Arthur in the eye.
"Not all." The king countered, looking towards Merlin. He then looked to Leon. "Take her to the dungeon."
"No-" Morgana said as she tightened her grip a little tighter and took a step backwards.
"She had just confessed to killing the king. There are consequences." Arthur said not unkindly, just matter-of-factly.
"Don't do this Arthur, please." Morgana pleaded.
Arthur felt a wave of anger wash over him. "None of this is my doing."
"I know." Morgana agreed. "She's a child-"
"No she knew what she was doing." Arthur said coldly. "She killed the king of Camelot, our father."
"No." Morgana snapped. "She killed the man that persecuted people like us."
Arthur shock his head. He knew Morgana was right, but he was growing tiered of it being used as an excuse for causing more harm. "And where is thinking like that, a life for a life going to lead us."
"Isn't that what your doing."
"I never said I would have her killed."
Kara pulled away from Morgana's hold. "It's alright." She said trying to smile at Morgana and she turned to face her. "You don't have to fight for me now."
"I always will."
Both women blinked rapidly as they tried to stop any tears from falling.
Kara took a second to take in a deep breath to calm herself before she turned to face Arthur. "I'll go quietly, but Mordred did nothing wrong."
"I believe you." Arthur told her.
Kara felt a weight leave her at this. With the king's reassurance she allowed Leon to lead her to the dungeon where she would await her fate. Whatever that would be. She was hopeful but not naive. As she stepped out of the room she looked back at the couples left behind. Gwen had moved to stand next to Arthur, taking his hand in hers as she placed her head on his shoulder. Merlin had moved in front of Morgana, lifting his arms to wrap around her as she rested her head on his chest. She felt the absence of Mordred like a sharp pain in her chest.
Thank you for reading. I hope you liked the newest chapter. Only seven more chapter to go. As this is such an important point in the story I really hope that all of the characters actions made sense. That you understood why they made the choices that they did. If anything at all didn't make sense, why a character did what they did then please let me know so that I can work to fix it.
As always any feedback, comments or ideas that you may have are very welcome.
