Chapter 12

Violet sat in the room with Phillips who was busy standing near his window looking out it very stoically. Her brows were pinched together in concern knowing that this wasn't a good thing. They hadn't heard anything from Rogers meaning that he could have gotten killed and it wasn't going to be seen in a good light knowing that they had gotten someone killed.

"Senator Brandt, I regret to report that Captain Steven G. Rogers went missing behind enemy lines on the 3rd of last week." He looked at the rough draft that was on his notepad, his brows pinched together in frustration. "Aerial reconnaissance has proven unfruitful. As a result, I must declare Captain Rogers killed in action."

The corporal that he had been talking to stopped typing.

Colonel Phillips turned to see Peggy standing there at the door with her eyes red from lack of sleep.

"The last surveillance flight is back." She said coming into the room and laying down the aerial pictures of the base. "No sign of activity."

Phillips gazed at the photos and then looked at the corporal. "Corporal. Why don't you go get a cup of coffee?"

The corporal nodded before leaving the three of them in the room.

Phillips turned his attention to both women in the room. "I can't touch Stark. He's a civilian… and the Army's number one weapons contractor. You're neither."

Violet crossed her arms knowing that he was going to give Peggy a hard time because he couldn't give Violet herself a hard time with who she was and what she could do.

Peggy took a breath through her nose as she squared her shoulders to look at Colonel Phillips. "You'll have my resignation in the morning."

"I can probably make it so that you'll avoid a court martial."

"With respect, sir, I don't regret my actions. And I doubt Captain Rogers did, either."

"What makes you think I give a damn about your opinions?"

Peggy gripped her hands at her sides in anger as Phillips stepped forward.

"I took a chance on you, Agent Carter. Now that boy and a lot of other men are dead because you had a crush."

Peggy looked up at Phillips through her lashes. "It wasn't that. I had faith."

"Well, I hope that's a great comfort to you when they shut this division down."

Violet walked out the door waving her hand in frustration not wanting to hear what Phillips had to say next. She wasn't going to be belittled by a man that hardly knew her. The commotion outside was more interesting than what was going on inside the tent. She moved towards the camp entrance and she let out a soft laugh seeing Steve and Bucky walking up the road leading a squad of POWs in ragtag vehicles carrying the rest of the men that had been missing. She had to admit that the young man was a sight for sore eyes and she was glad to see that he was very much alive and well.

Steve saluted to Phillips as the crowd parted to allow him through. "Colonel, some of these men need medical attention."

Phillips looked at all the men who had gaunt faces. He nodded his head to the medics allowing the men to get the help that they needed.

"I'd like to surrender myself for disciplinary action."

Phillips looked at the battered and burned shield. "That won't be necessary."

"Sir,"

"Just how many orders do you plan on disobeying, Captain?"

Steve locked his eyes with Phillips and then smiled. "Yes, sir."

Phillips turned to Peggy, smiling wryly at the brown-haired woman. "Faith, huh?" He said walking away from them.

Peggy stopped herself from hugging the blond-haired man. "You're late."

Steve pulled out the transponder that Violet had given to him prior. There was no way that he would be able to call anyone on it. "Sorry, couldn't call my ride."

Violet shook her head lightly, turning her attention to a nurse. "How about we get this Sargent looked over and make sure that he's alright?"

The nurse nodded her head moving forward towards Bucky. "Where do you hurt, soldier."

A smile came to Bucky's lips as he looked at the nurse, his eyes wandering to the woman that was turning on her heels. He had to admit that one day soon he was going to have to see this woman and figure her out. She seemed like someone that he wanted to learn more about.
