Chapter 26

Violet was in the pub with Morita, Jones, Dernier, Falsworth, and Dugan with their bags against the wall. Violet put her cigarette down and slowly raised her beer glass with the rest of them.

"To the Captain." Dugan said before he took a long drink of his beer.

Violet drank her beer slowly knowing that it wasn't easy for the men to lose two people in their lives.

The other men drank their beers knowing that this would be the last time that they would see one another.

Dugan looked over at the young woman. "So what is your plan after this, Agent?"

Violet put her beer glass down and picked up her cigarette taking a long drag of it allowing the smoke to fill her lungs before letting it out slowly. She let out a soft breath running her free hand through her hair. "Honestly going home and spending time in my apartment in hopes that my brother comes home."

"You still haven't heard from him?"

Violet let out a breath. "The only word that I got was that he was in Hiroshima, but that was all I got from Victor who is a long time friend of ours."

Dugan raised his beer towards her. "Hopefully he'll return home safely to you."

Violet offered the man a small smile. "Thank you Dugan."

"We're sorry that you've been through so much." Jones said softly looking at the young woman. "Your brother is missing… and…"

Her hand went to the dogtags. "Yes…" She said softly, taking a soft breath knowing that she needed to stop Jones from finishing the sentence. She took another drag of her cigarette letting out a soft breath.

"Sorry I didn't mean to bring up Barnes."

Violet waved her hand softly. "I know you didn't mean to bring up James." She said softly, looking down. Her heart clenched in her chest, losing him was painful and she knew that she would never see him again. She didn't know what she was going to do, but she knew that she wouldn't give her heart away like she did this last time. She wasn't going through the heartache again. She was old enough to know that she shouldn't have done what she did. She shouldn't have fallen in love with a man that would never make it through the years that she lived through so far.

"I know that it is fresh, losing Barnes." Dugan said looking over at the woman seeing the wave of emotion that went across her face. He could tell that it was still very fresh, she was trying to hold herself together and not lose herself in sobbing tears. "You don't regret it though do ya, lass?"

Violet swallowed the lump in her throat. "No, I don't." She said softly even though her heart regretted falling in love, but she couldn't bring herself to say it. It would break her own heart even more.

"We know ya truly loved him, lass."

Violet smiled a small weak smile. "So tell me… since this is probably my last time seeing you all… what are your plans?"

"Returning home and going back to normal life." Dernier said thinking as he took a large swallow of his beer.

"A normal life?" Violet questioned softly. "I don't really get a normal life." She let out a breath as she stubbed out her cigarette letting out a soft breath. "You can try as hard as you want but the war side will always be there."

Denier let out a soft hum. "You sound like you know what it is like."

She moved forward. "Since I was on your team… I guess I should tell the truth."

"Truth?" Jones asked, slightly confused.

Violet swallowed the lump in her throat. "It's in a classified folder. No one really knows about it." She let out a breath. "I'm older than what you think I am. I've been in several wars."

"Wait, you're telling us that you've fought in other wars?" Dernier said, his brows furrowing together.

Violet nodded her head. "World War I, the Civil War…"

"That means…" Morita said, looking at her with wide eyes.

"That I'm over 100 years old? Yes."

Falsworth blinked a few times in shock. "And when you told Dugan that you didn't regret the relationship?"

Violet took a breath. "No, I didn't regret my relationship with James. I loved him truly. I was going to tell him as well, but I never got the chance to."

"Does that also explain the blood that you were covered in?" Dugan questioned.

Violet looked down. "Yes, I can grow my nails out… And they can be deadly… I also…" She swallowed the lump in her throat. "Everytime I get shot at or wounded… I will heal…"

Dugan took a breath and looked at the men knowing that they loved her and loved having her on the team. "I take it we have to take this to our graves knowing this?"

Violet nodded her head weakly. "I don't want it getting out…"

Jones looked at the young woman. He nodded his head. "It's fine. We'll keep it a secret."

Violet smiled softly. "Thank you."

Dugan smiled. "You got it lass."
