Chapter 28

Violet sat in the cafe waiting for Peggy to show up. She was dressed up in a nice mint green dress that she wore the night that she had become a Howling Commando. She picked up her mug and drank the hot coffee that was inside of it.

Peggy came in through the door looking around for Violet.

Violet waved her hand alerting Peggy where she was.

Peggy walked over and joined her at the table. She looked at Violet with a concerned gaze. "Alright, what did you need to tell me?"

"Order something and we'll talk."

Peggy took a breath and nodded her head.

Violet watched the brunette order tea and her eyes on her. Violet took a breath. "Alright, I'll tell you. But you must promise me…"

"Promise to not think the worst of you?" Peggy questioned leaning forward looking at the dark haired woman.

Violet swallowed the thick lump in her throat and nodded her head. "Right." She said softly.

"I won't." Peggy said, touching her hand softly and squeezing it. "Tell me."

"It's just a hard story to tell." She admitted softly.

"I'm sure that it is, but you're still here."

Violet nodded her head slowly. "True. I'm just trying to figure out where to begin." She admitted softly rubbing the back of her neck nervously.

"Start at the very beginning."

Violet looked up, swallowing the lump in her throat. "Alright." She gripped her hands tightly together. "I was born in 1832."

Peggy's brows furrowed together. "Wait…"

"I'm not lying. I was born in 1932…"

"That means…"

"I'm over 100 years old? Yes."

"What…" Peggy swallowed the lump in her throat. "What are you?"

"Honestly I'm not sure what I am." Violet admitted softly. "When I was 12 things changed… My brother and I were always sick constantly. One day we changed, our hearing, sense of smell, and hands changed… I can elongate my nails. But World War II…"

"How many wars have you been in?"

"The American Civil War, World War I, and now this one." She admitted softly.

"Three wars… You fought in three of them?"

Violet nodded her head weakly. "Yes. I couldn't let my twin do this all on his own. So I joined on as a brother… but this last one I could fight as a female…"

"Did anyone else know about this?"

Violet shook her head lightly. "No, it's something that we normally don't share… I mean the president knows about it… that was why he recruited me to begin with… I was going to tell Steve and James… but never got to… I also told the crew… Now you."

Peggy nodded her head slowly.

"I guess the military saw me as a weapon… Every Time I get shot at or wounded…"

"What happens?"

"Howard kind of saw what happened. When Erskine was shot… I got hit in the shoulder and he wanted to treat the wound on my shoulder and…" She let out a soft breath. "He saw it heal right before his eyes."

"That explains why you were covered in blood that day."

Violet nodded her head. "Not my best moment I have to say." She admitted the truth rubbing the back of her neck.

"But that is who you are?"

Violet nodded her head slowly. "Yes."

Peggy bit the inner part of her cheek. "Why did you want it to be hidden?"

"If a Doctor ever found out… they would probably want to figure out why I'm like this."

Peggy nodded her head knowing that Doctors would want the truth. "I can see why you kept it hidden from everyone…"

"Yes." She said softly, looking down.

"And you lost Sargent Barnes… was there someone else that you lost in war?" She asked softly unsure if it was a good question to ask.

Violet sucked some air between her teeth. "Yes… I lost someone back in the Civil War… my first love… William Harris." She said softly looking down at her hands as she felt tears coming to her eyes remembering her poor William who was taken way too soon. "He died early on in the war…"

"He knew that you were inside of the army?"

"Yes, he did. I told him that I wanted to do what I could and it wasn't going to be like no nurse."

Peggy let out a soft hum. "It's why you were trying to avoid a relationship with Sergeant Barnes."

"One of them, yes." She said softly chewing the inside of her cheek. "But I don't regret it."

Peggy nodded her head. "I can tell." She said softly, causing Violet to look up at her. She offered Violet a small smile. "You looked smitten by him. I could tell that you were in love with him."

"Yes, I suppose I truly was… but I don't know if he fully knew that I loved him." She admitted softly looking down as tears began to fall from her dark lashes.

"I think he knew that you loved him."

Violet looked up at her friend weakly with tears in her eyes.

"Don't ever forget him. I'm sure that one day… you'll see him again."

"I hope so Peggy…" She said softly.
