While her sister was nowhere to be found in the morning it didn't take long for Andrea to agree to stay in the bus while Amy went on a run. Emma and Braden did not look happy to be left with her older sister but had learned quickly that fits would not get them anything but pain. The young blonde kissed them both on the forehead before feeding them breakfast. It was still August and hot as hell in Georgia but Amy would take the sweat over a bite from the dead. So, she quickly placed on her arm guards and shin pads, making sure to have plenty of water with her.
Originally, she intended to have Glenn drop her off at one of the smaller towns close to the city but the young Asian man quickly decided they would stick together. Typically he did his own solo run into the city, something Amy thought completely suicidal. However, Amy refused to go anywhere near the small fenced-in outposts the military installed after the so-called refugee center fell. If Katrina taught them nothing, it wasn't Amy's business to tell them they were stupid to trust the army that bombed cities and slaughtered hospitals.
They ended up in a small town that was eerily empty after a two hours drive of traffic jams and road blocks. Amy just considered herself lucky they didn't run into any survivors. While she didn't think they would turn to cannibalism a week into the apocalypse, people still did it before the end of the world. They pulled into a small strip mall that had exactly what Amy had been hoping for, Tractor Supply.
"Wow, there's no geeks." Glenn whispered, nearly awed as they walked across the abandoned parking lot.
Amy veered off to a green Silverado that already had a 12 foot trailer attached to the hitch. The owner's corpse was leaning up against the back tire, his entire lower body stripped of any flesh. His keys were still clutched in his twitching dead hands so she wasted little time stabbing him through his temple. Glenn gagged behind her but kept his bat raised and ready while he scanned the empty lot.
"This guy must have been a janitor." The blonde grumbled while trying the many master keys he had on his ring for the locked trailer. After only twelve attempts, she finally found the right one to call Glenn closer. "It doesn't sound like there's any in there but be prepared."
The side door swung open with Amy and Glenn quickly retreating. Inside was absolutely empty, as if the man had just swung in only for this trailer. She could smell the finish on the wood floor still so she quietly closed the door to check his truck. It was almost as if the man was prepared for the end of the world, his truck bed was enclosed by a hard cap and inside she could clearly see neatly organized boxes. With a sigh, she started checking keys once again, and decided to separate them for easier access.
Another twenty minutes and she was right, the man was prepared. Bottled water, MREs, obviously pilfered medication, and even brand new rifles in fancy cases. The poor man would have lasted weeks on the back of his truck alone so why had he exited his truck without a weapon? It became obvious by the stacks of electronics that were safely hidden in the extended cab but no ammo. He was an opportunist looter, not a prepper like she first thought. All of the things in his truck were brand new, even the Silverado had less than one hundred miles on it.
"This should help the group for a little while." Glenn hummed excitedly while pawing through the MREs with interest. Amy rolled her eyes and snapped the crate closed on him. He looked down at her with wide eyes. "I really should have listened to you sooner."
"We save those for when we are low on canned food and fresh meat dummy." The Blonde shook her head in amusement before driving the truck around the entire strip mall and parking at the back door of Tractor Supply. Hopping out of the jack up truck, she looked at him exasperated. "They have a long shelf life and are not healthy to eat for long periods of time. "
Glenn blushed, pointedly looking away from her before joining her by the doors. The door was propped open by a can but she could hear the rasping breath of the dead inside. Glancing at Glenn, she understood that he could hear it too. Not wanting to be overwhelmed, she tapped her knife on the heavy door to draw the closer. It was only moments before the first rotting face was shoving his way into the opening. Glenn raised his bat but the blond swung quickly, shoving her hunting knife into its eye socket. The body fell, exposing two more former employees, Amy made brief eye contact with Glenn before stepping back to let them into the doorway.
They both made quick work of the dead before shuffling further into the store, deciding to stick close together. Luckily, it seemed there were only three former employees in the whole building but the shelves were a little bare. Most of the seed and farming equipment were gone but in the back room they found chickens, ducks, and quail safely stored in large coops with auto feeders. Amy nearly pushed the man out of her way to see they were all pretty healthy, except the chicks. Glenn gagged seeing their little bodies but Amy was quickly focusing on how she could keep the quail alive.
Not wanting to press their good luck, the duo were speedy in loading carts with everything they could reasonably use in the store. Glenn raised an eyebrow at all the clothes Amy was loading, everything from babies to mens overalls. They were all good sturdy clothes and nobody would be complaining about the Carhartt jackets come winter. However, Glenn wasn't thinking of the future, he was very much of the belief that this was only temporary, taking only what was immediately needed. She remembered the asian man asking Shane how much trouble he would get into for looting the stores. He didn't want to survive the dead only to be charged with grand larceny.
"Are you sure we need all this?" Glenn whispered when Amy threw six pairs of work boots onto the loading cart.
"Most of the guys at camp don't have sturdy boots. The kids only have flip flops or sneakers, my kids are barefoot." Amy hummed, dragging the cart along behind her, already they filled six but she wanted everything close at hand in case walkers strolled in, or worse people.
"Your kids?" Glenn squeaked, nearly tripping over his feet in disbelief. The blonde at his side didn't react, just grabbed another cart to keep loading. "Isn't that a bit premature? You just found them yesterday!"
Amy didn't respond for a moment, throwing gift boxes of food and trail mix into the cart along with drinks. Glenn helped but could help but feel like she was annoyed with him and her silence was his answer. When she did speak, her voice was soft yet powerful. "Who's kids are they? Their mom died less than a week ago with their grandmother, their father yesterday. Everyone at camp looked at them like they were bombs when I brought them. Even my own sister wants to avoid them like they're already dead. I found them, they're mine to take care of."
"I just…" Glenn trailed off, a little shamefully. They joined another isle, clearing out all of the dehydrated food, momentarily forgetting the awkwardness. Most of the boxes were those three day emergency meals but there were also large tins with dehydrated eggs, milk, and others.
"I just dont think I could handle that kind of responsibility."
Amy didn't have a response to that, doing what she always did when talk got weird she walked a little faster. Glancing up and down the back lot to make sure no walkers stumbled upon them, she was very surprised to find a gun in her face when she turned to open the door. The girl couldn't have been more than twelve, light blonde hair with a boy a couple years younger hiding slightly behind her. The gun in her hand was shaky, like the rest of her she just looked tired like no young girl ever should. Both children were dirty, like they slept outside even though the evacuations had only started a week ago.
The blonde moved without any real thought, slapping the gun out of her bony hands and throwing the skinny girl in the opposite direction. With a sharp "Stay down!" Amy picked up the gun only to find it empty, the children were now shaking on the ground in front of her.
"Amy, you-" Glenn stopped mid step when he saw the blonde just staring hard at the children like they were a difficult math problem.
"I'm fine." Amy huffed, stuffing the gun in the back of her pants. These children were familiar but she wasn't sure from where. All of her group members looked like their show counterparts, it was crazy how good her memory was in this life. Maybe they were in the later seasons she lost interest in. "Why did you put a gun in my face?"
The girl didn't answer but the boy whimpered slightly before speaking in a raspy tone. "Did you mean what you said?"
Glenn remained silent upon hearing Amy was threatened while he stood by the carts. The girl pushed the boy behind her slightly and lifted her chin defiantly. "You took in other kids, right? Said they were yours to take care of now?"
Amy took a step forward to look them over some more, dried blood coated their clothes and skin but they didn't appear to have any injuries. Her voice was no longer harsh as she squatted down in front of them. "How long have you guys been alone?"
"Four days." The boy whispered, tears in his eyes as he looked at the soft look on Amy's face. "Mom told us to run to the concession stand but it was already gone. Some people picked us up but we ran away when the dead came."
"My name is Amy and this is my friend Glenn the Pizza Man." Amy smiled softly and offered them a hand up, starting to feel bad about throwing the girl down. When they were on their feet, she could tell they were weak and hungry but not hurt. "What are your names?"
The girl finally spoke, keeping an arm around the boy beside her. "I'm Jamie and this is my brother Billy…do you have somewhere safe?"
"Hey yeah!" Glenn finally decided to speak up now that the children started edging closer to Amy. "We got a camp with other kids like you! You like to camp? We got some extra tents and ma-"
"Glenn." Amy sighed, brushing her hand reassuringly along the girl's arm when she backed up hurriedly from the asian man. "Slow down. Yes, it's safe for now. You can stay in my bus unless you would rather camp out with someone else."
"You have a bus? Like a school bus? Were you a teacher?" Billy suddenly perked up, sidling up to Amy with an eager look. "Or were you a bus driver? I didn't like my bus driver, she was always so cranky in the mornings. Do you have any food? My teacher always kept snacks for kids who forgot their lunch."
"Billy!"
"It's fine." Amy smiled reassuringly, glancing around the lot one more time. There was a fence and it was clear at the moment but the blonde wanted to get everything loaded quickly. With quick steps she pulled a case of water along with a box of granola bars from one of the carts. "How about you guys sit next to the door while Glenn and I load all this stuff up?"
"I can help!" Jamie suddenly stepped forward, glancing longing at the food in the blonde's hands.
"That'll be great but first drink some water and eat." Amy ordered gently, steering them around Glenn to sit down.
The Asian man looked doubtful at the many carts Amy determined that they needed. Two of those carts were dog food and accessories, including books. In fact, she wiped out the How-To section and he didn't think she really needed to know how to can food or embroider but her dull stare made him move faster. Six of those carts were flatbeds piled higher than him, a lot of it clothes and when he glanced at the kids in their dirty and torn outfits, he felt like maybe she had a plan. Dehydrated food, shelves, storage bins, seeded planters, two generators, tools, solar panels, a lot of hatchets, Glenn suddenly felt resigned to the inevitable fight with Shane.
"-much. You'll get sick." Amy was kneeling down beside siblings, Jamie just stared at the box of granola in her hand. "How about when we get to camp, I'll fix you some chicken noodle soup!"
"Okay." Billy slurs, leaning all his weight into her side, his eyes half closed. His sister nods and reaches for him.
Glenn steps forward to pick the boy up, noting how bony he seems. His heart aches even as his sister looks at him more suspicious than Amy who knocked her ass on the ground. The blonde leads the girl to the truck sweeping all of the electronics into a recently empty cart. When the children are situated in the back, Amy grabs a large fluffy comforter from the back of the truck for them.
Twenty minutes later the trailer is packed with plenty of space to spare and Amy drops him off by his car. The last thing they had done was release the ducks. They had discussed needing everything for Emma and Braden on their way. Currently the baby was diapered in hand towels and Amy was sure her sister was already annoyed. Hell, she was annoyed that there were no diaper bags in the car considering the man had two babies not potty trained. The rest of the small strip mall only had fast food and a bail bond office so they drove slowly towards the main street. It was pure luck they found a small grocery next to a Once Upon a Child.
