The Storyteller993 – Well something tells me she's equal parts S and M, so yeah I agree she probably would.
And yes, those two act like children despite being adults.
The embodiment of weirdness – Well he's the best comparison like you said we have to Oogway and although he's not given much screen time for things like this, given that he's been alive for so long he has a world of genuine experience when it comes to the world of martial arts.
That and like I said before; I feel like he's not given much screen time in terms of story in Majikoi. So this is my way of doing that.
Majikoi – Love Me Seriously - Kazuko Route
Daughter of Kawakami – Part 8
A Young Girl's Resolve…
July 13th, 2009, Monday
Today was the first day of exams—
The unfortunate part was our proctor was the most annoying of all - Ayanokoji Maro, our "History" teacher.
"Now, you will show Maro the fruit of your studies, no? The top students will have their grades posted publicly. Test your might! Begin academic combat!" And with Maro's call a flurry of scratching pencils could be heard all around the room.
"Failure will not be tolerated, yes?" He warned. "Those who fail will spend summer break taking remedial lessons, and do not forget it!"
A few desks away I could see Kazuko from my peripheral vision, and she seemed to be doing fine on her own. Like the others she was going at some of the problems confidently.
Some she would have to stop and think but our studies and the methods I taught her seemed to shine through as she was even able to more confidently answer some of the more advanced questions the further on we went.
I have the utmost confidence in her… but back to my own test first!
After exams, at the secret base…
"Ah, my brain's tired…" Said a drained Momoyo said upon walking inside.
"Oh, here comes another one." Kazama said as if expecting her.
"Everyone always gathers here at the secret base after exams, yeah." Moro said.
"It's also a nice way to compare answers." Miyako pointed out.
"Huh? Then was the answers to question 14, A, C and E?" Kazuko asked.
"Yep." I simply replied.
"Aha! My gut feeling was right!" Kazuko said excitedly.
"It's fine to go with your gut from time to time. A right answer is always right, no matter how you get to it." I told her.
"That's right, Nagamasa." Momoyo said easily. Ever the lazy one she was.
"But aren't you bad at taking tests too, Momo-senpai?" Gakuto inquired.
"Well, Gakuto, happy to finally have some in the same boat as you, huh?" Momoyo pointed out his obvious loneliness.
"Oh, everyone else's here!" Mayucchi said as she arrived next.
"My girl here was nervous sic 'cause there were her first Freshmen-year exams." Matsukaze said.
"That seems to be everyone." Cookie pointed out as all ten of us were finally here.
"So it's time for a mini-Friday gathering." Kazama announced.
"Thanks to Nagamasa, I might not only pass – but maybe, just maybe I'll get 50 points!" Kazuko said giddily.
"Well fifty in some subjects might not be impossible. But you averaging 50 would be something else." I pointed out.
"Ahaha! And I barely even studied too!" Well not really.
"Well, efficiency matters." I pointed out again.
"Still, why did Maro have to be our proctor?" Moro asked.
"Right? Why the hell was he singing?" Gakuto said annoyed.
"That experience was certainly unpleasant. However, once I focused, I could keep my mind off it." Chris said. Seems her experience was… okay
"Mm-hm. That got me through it." Miyako said then subtlety attempted to add in, "Nagamasa, I love you ~"
"Your concentration is surely outmatched. Let's stay friends." Two can play at that game.
"You both mixed confessions and rejections into your regular speech?" Chris said surprised as if this was some new linguistic technique.
"I didn't even notice him singing." Kazuko proudly said.
"You're all so amazing. Your martial arts training must really come in handy." Moro said a bit envious.
"But after it was all over, I was so tired…" Kazuko said as she lowered her head into my lap. I couldn't help but smile at her.
"You really are like a mascot." I said this as I tickled her chin.
Wanko purred into it as I continued to do so, sounding more like a cat than a dog…
"Heheh, you're so relaxed, I can't tell if you're cat or a dog." Momoyo repeated my very same exact thoughts as before. "Then, want me to give you an energy boost?"
"Hmm?" Wanko was now curious as she looked at her sister.
"Once you're done with finals, I've got one more test for you." Momoyo began.
"Another test?" Wanko said panicky. "Why?!"
"Relax. It's not a test to study for. It's a Kawakami Temple test. You've trained for years now, so it's time for you to show what you've learned." Momoyo tells her.
Kazuko was shocked she knew what this meant, "Then you're saying you'll…?!"
Momoyo then finally admitted, "I challenge you, Kawakami Kazuko. We'll fight at the Kawakami Temple, with Gramps overseeing it."
Kazuko, of course was over the moon, "A-A formal duel!"
Momoyo was serious, "That's right. It's a one-on-one fight between you and me. Do you accept?"
"Yes! I'd love to!" Kazuko energetically agreed.
"Good. I like your spirit. I wouldn't want you any other way." Momoyo said. "This is going to be our first formal match."
"I thought I wouldn't be able to fight you for years." Kazuko said waiting for this moment her whole life.
"Heheheh… I can't wait already." Momoyo said with a smile.
"Ah! I need to start training right now!" Kazuko attempted to run out but I caught her collar.
"Hey! Wait! We're still in exams week!" I tell her.
She fidgets in my grasp, "But, but, but, but…!"
"Sit!" I order her.
" 'Kay!" She obediently replies. "Aww… my body moved instructively."
"Oh, but there's one catch. You can only fight me if you focus on your exams." Momoyo tempered her sister.
"Aww… all right." Kazuko seemed to calm down.
"Is that better, Nagamasa? I probably should've said that first." Momoyo said.
"I thought you'd gone crazy." I replied, but with a smile.
"But you know, can she measure up to Momo-senpai? Not to be a killjoy, but… Hoe can she win?" Moro pondered out loud.
"I want her to give me all she's got. Even if she loses, I won't chew her out for that." Momoyo told him.
But only if they knew this would be your first and only duel with her. I remembered how this test of theirs was supposed to go. If Wanko couldn't even force Momoyo to block with all she has, let alone hit her once that despite her ten years of training with them…
She should give up martial arts as a path entirely… I knew in their hearts, they loved her. Deep down everyone at the Temple loved Kazuko. But…
Was that right? Was all Kazuko's training really been the way she should've been doing it? In the shadow and overbearing stature of the Goddess of Martial Arts?
I guess my face showed my thoughts as I didn't notice a very telling look from the family archer who caught me thinking.
"Nagamasa… are you okay? You look more worried than before. But could it be that you noticed what I noticed before too?" Miyako thought to herself. "You've been helping her in her studies and been training beside her… Naga…"
"Okay then. Wanko, good luck." Moro said as everyone else continued on.
"I just have to do my best!" Kazuko exclaimed..
"Yeah, that's the spirit." Momoyo said.
"I get to fight you, and you won't be holding back… This is going to be such an experience!" Kazuko really was excited. "I can't hold anything back!"
"That's not enough. Go past your limits." Momoyo corrected her sister.
"I am interested. As a fellow martial artist. May I observe?" Mayucchi asked.
"At a Temple match, each fighter's allowed at most one second. Old traditions can be annoying like that. Sorry." Momoyo told her.
Huh, that's weird all those challengers Momoyo got in her route, that rule never came up. All of those (well most) were official challenges like with the Caracal brothers.
Was she just doing this so everyone else wouldn't get involved? Keep it to being a family affair or something like that?
"Ah, oh well then. I don't mind." Mayucchi seems understanding.
"A match with Onee-sama… A match with Onee-sama!" Yep, safe to say Kazuko was more than fired up. You could feel that fire in her eyes.
But for me… I couldn't help but gain a smoldering sense of worry in my stomach.
July 17th, 2009, Friday
One last bell…
"And with that, your exams have come to an end." Maro announces to us. "Maro trusts you all fared well?"
"Ugh… I started picturing people naked during the tests, then before I knew it, all my time was gone." Which means Yonpachi probably did next to bupkis on his exam paper.
"Why'd you let yourself do that?" Moro asked him.
While Moro listened to Yonpachi vent on something about being a victim of "modern society" or some bull crap like that.
"Your answers will be returned, graded, come next week. Until then!" With that we were free finally from the hellscape that is testing time.
"Oh, I so screwed up everything this time." Chika said worryingly.
"I, like, studied, like, all, like, the wrong, like, things." Haguro said venting.
"Wanko, what about you?" Chika asked the class mascot.
"Heh-heh, even if it's arrogant I think I'm gonna average a 50 on my overall grade!" Wanko replied proudly.
"Legit? Damn girl. You're amazing." Haguro was taken aback by how forward Kazuko was.
"My secret is getting Nagamasa to tutor me." Kazuko revealed as I then felt her tug at my sleeve.
"What? Stop pulling my sleeve." I told her.
"I mean, when I looked back at the test and then I realized like, wow! This is exactly the kind of stuff Nagamasa taught me! You're the most reliable partner ever! I love you, Nagamasa!" Kazuko "confessed."
"Azai, lecture me next time." Haguro said in a way that made me very uncomfortable.
"Sorry, but if I tutored any more people; I wouldn't be able to sleep peacefully." I told her.
"You tryin' to imply you want this booty?" Gods above…!
"What in the hell made you even think that!?" I screamed at her.
"Oh, so Wanko has Azaicchi." Chika pointed out.
"You have me, Chika-chan." Mayo told her friend.
"But I forget everything I try to study, and I have to rely on you so much I feel bad for it." Chika said with a bit of guilt.
"There's no need to worry about that." Mayo tried to assuage her friend's concerns. "Right, Azai-chan, Naoe-chan?"
"Yeah, we're used to it." Yamato said.
"If you ever need help, you can at least come to us in class." I tell her.
"Wow, then maybe I'll take you up on that offer." Chika was now interested.
"That's what I do!" Kazuko joined in now too.
"So like, this totally feels like I'm the odd girl being left out, this is so bullying." Haguro could be heard complaining.
"Well, I somehow made it through exams." Wanko then began shadowboxing in the classroom, "Now it's finally time! Whoosh, whoosh, whoosh!"
"What's going on. Why is Wanko shadowboxing?" Chika inquired.
"Because she's having an exciting martial arts match coming up." Yamato told them.
"She does? I hope you do well, Wanko-chan." Mayo cheered her on.
"But Wanko always loses." Haguro stated.
"Oooh… I know I've got a record of losing, but… But I've got the determination to see it through! Roooaaarrr!" Wanko let's out a "roar", more like some cheap sound effect.
"Wanko, it would've been better if you didn't do the sound effect out loud?" I rhetorically pointed out.
"Kaplooie." She then slowly fell to the floor.
"And now you're bursting with excitement." I say sarcastically.
The Friday Meeting—
"Tests are finally over, and it seems our three newest members, they've posed no issue." Momoyo referred to Chris, Mayucchi and I.
"They were challenging, but I believe I did very well." Mayucchi replied.
"As did I… but I felt I made too many stupid mistakes." Chris admitted.
"Like Mayucchi said it was challenging but having studied myself and gone over the basics again with Kazuko, I think I've done well for myself." I reply.
"That's always a good problem to have. Having issues isn't a bad thing." Momoyo said.
"Onee-sama! I passed! I'm sure of it!" Kazuko told her sister.
"Wow. Nice going, little sis." Momoyo congratulates her.
"Especially when it sounds like you didn't. But what shocker is that really?" I replied.
"Ahhh, I can't hear you!" Momoyo comically yells to block me out. "Wanko, let's schedule the match."
"Uh-huh, yeah that says a lot more about you then I thought." I rhetorically said.
Momoyo continues to ignore me, "How about next week, at 6 P.M. on July 25th?"
"I accept!" Wanko agreed to the time and date.
"Great! I go call Gramps." Momoyo said as she pulled out her cell phone.
"When it comes to fighting, Momo-senpai doesn't miss a beat." I said.
"We do have to schedule a lot of medics on stand-by to be on hand." While I was used to that statement when it came to her usual challengers, given that this was her sister, for a moment I truly feared for Wanko's safety.
"But that's what a serious match entails, I'm sure you know that right, Nagamasa?" She asked me, not in just the usual way. But in her tone, like she was truly speaking to me.
"I'm going to keep pushing forward!" Wanko declared.
"Good luck to you both!" Mayucchi cheered for both sisters.
"Mmm…" Miyako just seemed to sit and ponder. She was never one for duels, but her instincts were always spot-on.
July 19th, 2009, Sunday
For a while now, I've been wondering and pondering as I think back on things. Meditating, I think back to all the stories that the Family have told me of their past specifically the ones about Wanko.
The devastating earthquake that rocked the city years, that unfortunately led to the tragic death of Wanko's adoptive grandmother which led to Wanko's eventual adoption by the Temple and the Kawakami family.
But even before all of that… She had… nothing. No one to claim her as her own daughter. She'd been left at a baby hatch by one of her parents. No note, no nothing. She didn't even know her own original name.
Okamoto Kazuko… her first adoptive name.
Kawakami Kazuko… her second and recent adoptive name.
During all of that she was happy and lived a fulfilled life, made the friends she'd come to know for nearly a decade. But eventually something either happened, or like now something has been getting to her. How recently she told me how she'd felt left out of the new family that for over 10 years had cared for her.
She's let her family name define her, but what makes Kazuko… Kazuko?
Ever since that day Momoyo offered Kazuko the chance to be her sister and by extension the Kawakami family, it's all she's ever thought about. Her sister, the temple, Master Lu, and principal Tesshin… but never herself.
Just who is… Kawakami Kazuko?
Finally letting out it all out, I opened my eyes I could finally hear the birds chirping in the sky and the wind gently carry itself across the garden I was meditating in.
"Oh, Nagamasa… you are here practicing your meditation it would seem. But something tells me there is something that ails you." It was Principal Tesshin.
"Ah, Master… n-no… it's nothing." I replied, but not convincingly given his reaction.
"Nagamasa, you would do well to remember there is nothing to be ashamed by letting your heart out. As your martial arts teacher it is my duty to see what ails our pupils." He told me.
"Then Master… how does one truly know that they've achieved some of kind of… understanding with themselves? That they are who they truly are, not just… what they are right now?" I asked him.
"Hmm, that is indeed a deep question. As for how one knows… sadly, that is up to the person in question. It is they who must take that journey of discovering their own self, finding their own ability and to achieve inner peace. For as I have told you before, for once you have obtained such a state, power unlike anything they have seen can be theirs."
"I see…" I say simply as I stand there thinking about his reply.
"I feel as though this question is not to yourself. But perhaps…" Tesshin opened his right eye, "Another?"
"…!" How did he…?
Tesshin merely chuckled, "Heheh, as I have said it is my duty to know what ails all of our pupils. Including ones we do not see right now. I can see Nagamasa, that for yourself you have achieved at least some understanding of yourself. But it seems to me that you are perhaps… afraid of something. That if you act to rashly things will seem to fall apart. Let me say another proverb: 'Eventually one meets their destiny on the path they take to avoid it.' Eventually you will find yourself forced to be honest about who you are."
"I see…" I say again.
"But let me also say this as well, even those who seem to know who they are might instead be blinded by what they think is the truth. Just some food for thought is all. Good luck on your mental training today." And with that once again Tesshin leaves as I'm left pondering all I've thought about today.
What do I do? And what can I do?
The days may seem peaceful, but I can feel a tension in the air begin to form.
July 22nd, 2009, Wednesday
Today was the day our exams were returned to us… and for Class F, this result was… average.
"You all probably could have done worse on these exams, but I doubt it. Haguro and Fukumoto, I will be seeing you this summer for your remedial lessons." Umeko-sensei explained.
And once again after some antics from Yonpachi about "butter dogs"… but just like everything else a certain curious blonde just had to bring it up again…
"What is a 'butter dog' exactly?" Chirs innocently asked.
Miyako took up the mantle to explain to her, "Hm, that's a good question. First, you take a large block of butter, and then…"
"Save it for outside the classroom!" Both Yamato and I exclaim.
"This conversation has all the appeal of listening to a chirus of WW2 fight plane engines. Yet, what else could you expect from 3D? Good grief… how vulgar…" Suguru said as if he were above the fray.
"That creepy nerd's making fun of reality again." Chika complained, but that was a usual occurrence nothing new. "Oh! We have swimming up next. I'll get my revenge then!"
"Kawakami, you've clearly improved. I want to see you continue that trend." Umeko handed back Kazuko's grades to her.
"Eheheh, thank you." Kazuko said with a bit of an embarrassed blush.
"Naoe, Azai, you both scored similarly, but just a great as well." Umeko-sensei told us.
"Thank you for that sensei." I replied as I looked at my scores and got a 90 overall.
"I'm delighted to hear that." Yamato replied.
"So what'd you get?" I asked him.
"91, you?" I held up mine in response. "Dang man, and for your first exam? That's pretty good."
"Naga! Naga! I did it! I actually averaged 50 points! Thanks, Nagamasa!" Kazuko ran up and showed me her test papers. So much red… but so much better than what she was doing before.
Of course, overall out of 100 points, 50 is… middle of the road let's say it in a nice way.
But with the air of gloom of retuning test scores, the fact that swimming period is up next…
"So here's the school swimsuit festival! Behold the perfectly sculpted muscles of my flex." But I push him aside as he falls to the floor.
"Get out of the way dude. We're trying to see the girls." I say as he thuds to the ground.
But of course Gakuto was nothing if not persistent, "Then pay me a compliment first. You won't get to see until then! Hmph, hmph, hmph, hmph…!"
"Shut up! And stop jumping!" Even Yamato was angry now.
"Man… what a view." We could hear Moro say.
"Screw that – let's swim!" Capt, ever the animal wanted to just dive right on in.
"Go jump in the kiddy pool and get yourself some chlorine!" An ever jealous Gakuto hissed, as he then pushed Capt in to the pool.
"Whoa! What the heck, Gakuto?!" Capt screamed as he splashed into the pool.
Eventually once more Yonpachi appeared, although one has to respect the man's craft despite the trouble it brings him.
"Hey, Nagamasa… is there anyone you're looking at?" He turned to me and ask.
"Wanko. She's always so full of energy." I answered.
"It's hard to think of her as sexy though, yeah…" Moro said.
"Well…" I trailed off trying to think of something to say… "There's just something about her when she really lets her hair down. She doesn't do it much since she always has it in a ponytail, but… I guess it's just a niche kind of sexy." I turned to the other guys seeing them look at me.
"What?" I ask them.
"Uh dude… do you like Wanko?" Yamato asked me straight up.
"W-Well… I mean I do…" Great, I thought I was ready to admit it. Why am I being a pansy now?!
"Wah, Nagamasa!" She called out to us as she spotted us looking at her and waved. I waved back just to be friendly, but that didn't stop the looks of my fellow male classmates.
"Hey, get over here and line up!" Saved by Umeko-sensei!
"Guys come on, we need to get a move on." I told the others.
"Then let's go line up—Whoa!" Gakuto then tumbled into the pool.
Coming up from the water was Capt, "I pulled you into the pool now! I'm an alligator chomping at your ankles!"
"You seem more like a kappa to me." Yamato replied.
"Good grief. Stop splashing about, you two." Umeko-sensei warned them.
"You're not changing into your own swimsuit, Kojima-sensei?" Usami-sensei came out of nowhere.
"Why are you ever here, Mr. Usami?" She asked.
"Well, I thought I'd shout down any boys who were getting too excited." Usami-sensei explained.
"Then you are here for the same reason as me?" She clarified.
"Man, what a coincidence." Really man? "We both know Lu-sensei can be too soft on them. I'll go talk to them!"
Wow, how pathetic…
"Hey, Mr. Lu." Usami-sensei called out to the Assistant Master.
"Mr. Usami, are you here to see the students in their swimsuits?" Lu asked him.
"Keep your voice down." Usami tried to get him to lower his volume. "Though you're not wrong."
"Goodness, you're a teacher, Mr. Usami." Lu chided him. "I'm at a loss for words at your confession. Just please do not interrupt my class."
Ignoring that back and forth…
"The teachers are talking, so let's play." Wanko offers.
"But like, the guys staring is way too obvious." Chika said.
"Enough of the delusions of grandeur. I haven't the slightest interest in you" Suguru replied, as if personally insulted.
"There you go again, you creepy nerd. But… are you really? ~ Are you really uninterested? ~" Chika stepped into a sexy pose.
A flash of Yonpachi's camera immediately went off, "Whoooaaa!" On top of that many of the boys in our class howled as it echoed across the pool.
"…!" Suguru shuddered, but not out of disgust! "Hmph, a meaningless gesture."
"Are you out of your mind!? I just came from that!" Yonpachi confessed.
Even Chika was shocked, "He's right? What sort of guy wouldn't be interested?!"
"Hmph. I never thought I'd see the day the two of you would agree on anything." Suguru tried to seem above the fray once more, but deep down…
"Mmnh!" Yonpachi grumbled.
As did Chika, "Mmph!"
But then the noticed their own reactions, "Hmph!" Yonpachi grumbled.
"Hmph!" Chika returned the favor.
"Chikarin's so sexy." Wanko said a little jealous.
"Well… that's not to say you don't have anything going for you either." I tell her.
"Hmm, that's still an odd way of putting it." Wanko replies. "Whatever! Right now, I need to train!"
As she declared that, Wanko jumped right into the pool. All of her energy was focused on this upcoming fight.
Just then Miyako came up to me, "Hey Nagamasa, I've seen how you've been the last few days, have you been thinking about what Momo-senpai's been thinking about challenging Wanko all of a sudden?"
"Yeah… I'd want to say it's just because of how she is. But if it's with her own sister, I just now there's something deeper to it all." I replied.
"Yeah… like Moro said back at the base, can Wanko really beat her, Momo-senpai said she planned to go all out. Really, Wanko has a zero percent chance to win." Miyako said continuing.
"Yeah, and even though she says it's not about winning or losing, I can tell it's almost like she was forcing herself to say that. I may not have known those two like you guys do, but I like to this I know how Momoyo acts when it comes to martial arts." I stated.
"Like you said, she's never been so serious in all these years. All of this is about the results of her training. It's like… it all feels so wrong." Miyako confessed to me.
"Yeah… I know how you feel. For the past few days, my mind's been a buzz just thinking about things. But no matter what I do, I can't seem to think straight. It's a horrid feeling, but I think someone like you is able to honestly say it." I tell her.
"Yeah, for a while now I've been meaning to tell Wanko what you've probably suspected and what Momo-senpai truly wants to tell her. Please don't be angry with me when I tell you…" She then whispers into my ear. "Wanko's not cut out for martial arts…"
"Yeah… I've had that feeling for a while now. At the temple, sometimes Principal Tesshin and even Momoyo don't ever want to speak about martial arts when it's brought up and they brush her off. But even still…" I'm still resistant to this!
"I know how you feel. By any regular measure, Wanko is a talented fighter, but given the great scale of her dream and what she's aiming for…" Miyako's words hang onto me like an anchor.
"Still, thank you for being honest Miyako… thank you." I say as I rub her hair.
"Mmm-hmm…" She purrs into my hand. "But still I don't have proof that's what it's all about, but given what you've said it's starting to add up."
There's no way I can just forget about it. There's no point in that. I know that family, and when they're serious… they'll be deadly serious.
But for her path to truly start… maybe it's for the better she first hear that cruel truth from them…
"One often meets their destiny even if one attempts to avoid it…" But for Wanko what did that mean? What's her destiny?
To throw away the thing she's thrown ten years attempting to master only to be told she's nothing at it? Or maybe… there was another way?
But those thoughts were better saved for three days after today…
After swimming class however—
"Let's get changed, boys." I tell the resto f the guys.
Suguru however looked pitiful as Yonpachi saw him crying, "Suguru, what's wrong?"
"I am an embarrassment to the cause. Banish me now!" Suguru demanded.
"What? What's wrong?" Moro asked now.
"I saw Blondie strike a pose…" But Yonpachi stole the moment.
"And I permanently saved that image in my brain." He said drooling over himself.
Suguru continued, "I felt lust. Slight, faint, miniscule – yet it was there."
"Uh, dude, hate to break it to you, but that's normal for any guy. Nearly every guy in this room probably howled when they saw Chika strike that pose." I told him.
"Yeah, I thought it was hot too." Even Kuma the resident food critic was enticed.
"Besides, the thought just crossed your mind was all. Don't worry about it." Yamato tried to clam him down.
"Yeah. To be honest, I thought the same thing." Moro admitted to being turned on.
"You could even say anyone who doesn't react isn't really a guy." Yonpachi said.
"Yeah… I never thought I would admit it… but her skin was unblemished. A dumb blonde she may be, but she is formidable." But that was just the issue for Suguru, "Yet, I nevertheless cannot forgive myself for my failing! Even a micron-sized reaction is too much! So.. I have made up my mind. I will commence Operation First Seelowe!"
Oh god… "By the end of the summer, I will be a virgin no more!" Kill me!
Hearing this dude confess he wants to lose his V-card over the fact he got turned on by a girl; a natural reaction for any guy is somehow some thing he has to clean up. Yet, he wants to try and do it with a woman… all over the fact he got turned on?
What fucking logic is that?
Tuning out the rest of this conversation, I merely put it out of my mind as I wait for school to end.
The Friday Meeting—
"Checkout complete. I've reserved your cream caramel, Chris." Moro told the sweets-loving German.
"Oh, you secured it? Well done. Thank you." Chris thanked him. "It was always a tricky task for me. Since it would be sold out in less than a minute."
"Don't you just gotta stand in front of your computer until it's time?" Capt asked her.
"I tried that, but the website was busy and I could not reserve the item." Chris said showing her annoyance.
"I'm only on Wi-Fi, but… I guess I got lucky. It's a relief to be done with it." Moro said happy to have helped.
After avoiding a tech rant from Moro, Chris once again thanked Moro for his help. With even Chris and Kazama talking about their love of sweets.
"But I believe sweets go even greater with inari sushi." Chris said.
"Uh, no, no, no. That sounds disastrous." Yamato pushed back.
That left Chris annoyed now, "Mm. Then Yamato, you won't be getting any."
Here they go again, "Heck, Margit's always at your beck and call. She would've brought you a box-full, if you asked."
"It would be wrong of me to let her spoil me like that. That's why I decided to try and do this on my own." Chris replied. "And see what I have done? You can mock me as spoiled no more."
But Yamato never to let one go, "Didn't Moro end up doing everything in the end?"
Mayucchi ever the peacekeeper brought some tea, "Now, now. Here, have some tea."
"And instead of just sweets, have a rice ball." I brought out some of my homemade rice balls for everyone to enjoy.
"Mmm… your green tea is exquisitely tart." Chris compliments Mayucchi's tea.
"And your rice balls are amazing, Nagamasa." Yamato points out.
"Thank you, I used my family's favorite tea leaves." Mayucchi says with a smile.
"I always aim to please." I reply.
"I think this tea would go great with inari sushi." Chris as she sips at the cup. "Ah… well, Mayucchi, Nagamasa, how was your first semester?"
"We're you able to make any other friends besides us?" I ask her.
Mayucchi then proceeded to tell us that there was a girl in her class that was kind to her, but sadly she hadn't gotten her phone number. Kazuko and Momoyo encouraged her the next time she saw her to ask for it so they could occasionally hang out over the summer.
Seeing both sisters giving such friendly advice together right on the eve of their first duel, was quite the sight. To be close as ever, yet just underneath the surface I know the both of them are thinking two different things…
Eventually the night devolved into a game night, but I excused myself telling them I wasn't interested. I was on the roof enjoying the peaceful night sky and the stars that shined back as the moon's light bathed over Kawakami.
There was a cool breeze as well, so it was a great way to relax and take the edge off of what I was thinking about earlier.
I then heard steps behind me to see that it was Kazuko who made her way up, "Oh, Nagamasa. This is where you were?"
"I forgot you weren't playing. What brings you up here?" I asked her.
"I wanted to get some mental practice in." Mental training, huh?
"That makes sense. No sense in tiring yourself out before your big fight with Momoyo." I told her.
"If I wake up pooped tomorrow, then this is all for nothing." Kazuko replied.
"It really is just a day away, huh…?"
"Yeah, finally…" She seemed more than ready for this.
"Hey, Wanko, I know it's sudden but I want to show you something. But we have to go back to the Temple to do so, okay?" I tell her.
"Huh, back to the Temple? If you say so, let's just say goodbye to everyone real quick." With that Kazuko and I told everyone we would be heading back a bit earlier than usual.
Everyone let us off with a wave, as the two of us left for the Temple. Eventually we did, and I told her to bring her naginata. And from there to the same garden I'd been doing my mental training at.
"Naga, what's this about? Are we doing a spar? But I want to save as much—" But I hold out my hand to stop her.
"No, no, this is mental training. But it's more different than just meditation. It's a form of tai chi practiced by some in martial arts. If one wants to achieve a form of mental peace, then follow after me, okay?" I tell her.
"Okay." She says as she nods.
Grabbing a bo-staff, I have Kazuko stand near the waterfall, and as both of us get into a stable sense of peace, "Okay, let's begin…"
[Once again like before have Kung Fu Panda's Inner Peace OST play, but for reference to movements look up another video from the YTuber, taichisao's video by the name of 'Yang Style Form 24 – Tai Chi Staff.]
Closing her eyes, she felt the water drop onto the blade of her naginata, and so the both of us moved in harmony as she guided the water on the blade, eventually dropping it but catching it on the staff of her naginata itself.
Her movements guided by a sense of calm and serenity, she moved to keep the water balanced and in tune with her movements.
In doing, so I could only confess to seeing how truly beautiful I saw the young girl in front of me…
Her red hair flowed in the night breeze, her movements flowed freely and were crisp, the silhouette of the moon reflected off her as it only accentuated her beauty even further.
And just in those few minutes of time, in just a few beautiful movements…
I truly fell in love…
And just as softly as she started, Kazuko let her blade down as the water touched the plant below.
Exhaling, she opened her eyes and smiled at me, "That really was something different, thanks Nagamasa!"
"Your welcome." I replied as we both bowed to each other. "Hey, Kazuko…"
"Yeah?" She asked.
"Use your naginata tomorrow." I tell her.
"Huh, what do you mean?" She asked again.
"You've made this apart of who are during all of your time here at Kawakami Temple, in a way this has been an extension of you for years now as I've been able to tell. Face Momoyo tomorrow with everything you have. Don't hold back, that means with everything you have and everything you are." I tell her.
"Yeah… Yeah!" She energetically replies. "I'll face Onee-sama with everything I have from the start! Naga, I forgot to ask back at the base, but can you be my second tomorrow during the match and cheer for me?"
"I wouldn't miss it for anything in the world…" I answered her as I patted her head.
"Mmm… Thanks ~" She purred slightly.
I'll always be by your side Kazuko… always… that's what I've decided.
July 25th, 2009, Saturday
July 25th has finally come, and there's not a cloud in the sky. It's also the final day of the semester of course, and even with report cards being given out… reactions were mixed.
But that didn't matter right now, as today was also the day for the match between both Kawakami sisters.
" 'Kay! I'm feeling awesome! I'm ready to fight whenever!" But right now Wanko couldn't care less about her grades right now.
On the sidelines I was sitting with Lu-sensei, "I'll be right here with Wanko, as her second Master."
"Very well, please cheer her on to the end." Lu-sensei tells me.
Kazuko loosens up with a last bit of shadowboxing her naginata by her side as she waits, "Whoosh, whoosh, whoosh. Assistant master, is it time yet?"
"It's time. Look, Momoyo has arrived as well." He points over as we see Momoyo come out.
"Yo…" Almost immediately I could feel the intensity of her aura. Momoyo was serious when a challengers came to her, but this was totally different. No trace of the easygoing sister was to be seen on her face. It was easy enough to call her two-faced if you wanted to, like the side we saw last night was a lie.
"You seem ready too, Momoyo." Lu-sensei said.
"Yeah. Start the match." Momoyo asked. Her eyes showed nothing but the determination of a warrior dead set on defeating her foe. Seeing her this way now while doing it to one of her friends was just… scary.
"Are you okay Wanko? I've got to say looking at her, even I would be scared." I tell her with concern.
Kazuko slightly shudders as she replies, "I-I'm not scared… No… I am scared. I can't lie here. But I wont let that stop me here! If I can't even bring myself to fight her, than what was the point of this?!" She said that, and then glared at her sister.
"Kazuko, good luck…" Lu-sensei told her.
Tesshin was in-between both of them watching over the fight, "Warrior sisters are always destined to fight in the end. Then let us begin the match! West corner, Kawakami Momoyo!"
"Ready!" Momoyo called out.
"In the east, Kawakami Kazuko!" Tesshin announced next.
"Yes, sir!" Kazuko replied in kind as she took her naginata to her hands.
"You plan to fight me with everything, Kazuko?" Momoyo inquired of her sister.
"Yes! This naginata… it's been apart of me since I first started here, I'll beat you… Onee-sama, no… Kawakami Momoyo!" Kazuko declared as she pointed her weapon at her sister.
"Good, don't hold anything back." Momoyo replied. There was no smile to be seen from her.
I then whispered to myself, even though I know it hurt to know the outcome already I'd promised to support her, "Wanko, give it your best out there…"
Tesshin the raised his hand and just as quickly call for the match to start, "Then stand tall and fight fair! Begin!"
"Here I come!"
"Fight me!"
"Haaaahh!" Kazuko roared, as I could feel the ground tremble slightly from it. Even while having trained side by side with her it was more tangible than ever.
"You're fired up now, Wanko. Give her everything you can…!" I said to myself.
"Soryaahh!" Kazuko charged in, straightforward as her personality to a T. She attacked forward with all her might. "Seigh, seigh, seigh, seigh!"
Slash after slash, the fruits of her labor were made real. A barrage of swings no normal person would be able to follow, let alone match.
"Wrong…" Was all Momoyo said as she simply dodged Kazuko's attacks without leaving her spot or taking single step back.
"Hiya!" Kazuko did the same trick that she'd used against Chris in their first duel, using the naginata as a balancer she launched a kick at Momoyo almost as fast as lightning.
"Also wrong…" Momoyo just slid to the side, then… "Hah!"
Kicked like a missile at her sister which hit true, "Gwah?!" The kick had sent Kazuko flying back and tumbling to the ground.
"Gh… Ah!" Kazuko coughed as she attempted to recover from that harsh blow. "Huff, huff, huff… I-I'm not done yet!"
And yet despite that damage, she continued her attack. She then started to mix in feints, and changed the speed of her attacks. Yet just as easily as all the others, Momoyo simply swept the blows away either dodging or even outright manipulating her sister's naginata.
Despite all her drills, all her practice, Momoyo could follow her every move.
"Your movements are wrong." Momoyo said again.
"Waaahhh!" Kazuko shouted, as she once again charged in to close the distance between the two. At this point I could feel it, she'd lost herself in the fight and was now just going in blind consumed by the fight.
"Kawakami Ultimate: Scorpion Strike!" Just like her powerful kick, with the naginata the move was just as strong as she made to attack Momoyo's center.
"Wrong. Too slow." Momoyo said as she simply dodged.
"Kawakami Ultimate: Snake Snipe!" Like with the kick she done to Margit in Hakone during our bout with her there, the naginata made to attack from below.
"Wrong. Not crisp enough." Momoyo dodged just like all the other times.
"Kawakami Ultimate: Sword of the Earth!" An overhead strike just as powerful as a drilling axe kick to the top of one's head…
"Wrong again." Momoyo had dodged all of Wanko's ultimate attacks.
"Hah!" And Momoyo just as quickly retaliated as she'd dodged with a powerful kick that sent Kazuko into the air.
"Wah!?" Kazuko screamed as she was sent tumbling again.
"Kazuko, come at me with nothing but your best. Show me what you're truly capable of." Momoyo told her sister.
"Kh…!" Wanko got up as she took her stance again. "Seyaahh!"
Once more it was as if the weapon danced in her fingers, just as she had danced last night it was as if the naginata was truly an extension of her body.
"…" Yet Momoyo said nothing as she once again dodged all of Kazuko's attacks.
"!—" Kazuko's body was now dripping with sweat from all the fighting she'd done. But Momoyo's body was pristine with not a drop on it. "I can't believe it… She's so strong…"
It had taken her till the point in the battle to realize this…
"Huff… huff… huff…" This wasn't even a match. During this whole time, she'd not genuinely threaten her sister once. "Then I'll use my greatest technique… Kawakami Ultimate: Wheel of Time!"
She began spinning her naginata incredibly fast. Just the force of her will began to radiate in the area.
"Kazuko… she was already capable of this much… but for Momoyo." I looked over to see that Momoyo hadn't moved a single muscle as she only watched her sister. But even still with each spin of her naginata, Wanko's power grew…
"That's forty spins… that's MAX power!" For this move, the more she spun her weapon, it only grew stronger. From her experience, this was enough power to guarantee a kill and so she charged her sister with her full power… "Haaaaahhhh!"
That decisive ultimate, that with one swing could cut anything in twain—
"Wrong." Momoyo then just dodged it by a hair.
Leaving Kazuko surprised, "You anticipated it!?"
But that left Momoyo the space to counter, "You fail!"
"Agh!" The vicious kick bore into Kazuko's body, she crashed into the ground. "Ah… *cough*…"
And so Kazuko crumpled, hopeless, to the ground. It was over…
"Stop!" Tesshin called the match. "The winner is Momoyo!"
The whole time as I sat there… Momoyo had dominated the whole match from the very start… I had no words for what had just occurred. No amount of them could describe what I felt in that moment.
With what little strength she had left, Kazuko got up but was coughing harshly, I couldn't help as I brough myself to her side, "Wanko, are you alright?"
"Medics, tend to her!" Lu-sensei ordered as a few trained medics from the Temple began to come in, but Kazuko suddenly attempted to get up.
"*Cough* *Wheeze*… I-I'm alright…" Kazuko said through her obviously hurt body. "But. Onee-sama… let me try again. I'll do… better next time."
"You're too hurt to fight anymore today." Momoyo told her without missing a beat.
"But I…" Kazuko said.
"After fighting you, there's two things I want to say" This left Kazuko confused for a moment.
Momoyo the began, "The first… is a compliment. You have gotten strong. I mean that. You've come a long way since you started training ten years ago. You have a gift."
"That's a good thing… right?" Oh, Wanko…
"Of course." Momoyo replied, but I could see it in her face. Even looking at Lu-sensei, and Tesshin I call see from their grim faces. "You're no weak. I'm just too strong right now. So I'm proud of how you've grown. You worked hard to this point." Momoyo then kindly patted Wanko's head.
"Onee-sama…" Kazuko smiled for a brief moment, which for the first time hurt as she then seemed to notice everyone's facial expressions. "Eh… Onee-sama…?"
"And here's the second thing. Listen carefully. Wanko… You're an amazing athlete. But… Even so… The truth was clear to me, during the match." Momoyo continued with her second point.
"Wh-what truth?" Wanko asked with trepidation.
"You don't have any talent for martial arts." Momoyo finally said it.
"Huh?" The admission was a shock, an absolute gut punch to Wanko.
"Even if you keep pushing yourself along this path, you'll never be able to become Kawakami Temple's assistant master." Momoyo told her.
"O-Onee-sama?" Wanko still seemed to be in shock from the harsh confession of her adoptive sister.
"That's… What I've concluded." Momoyo seemed resolute in her decision.
"D-Don't say that! I know I was no match for you, but still! I'm still in training! I-It's too early to decide that!" Kazuko finally began to bite back.
"I may be strong, but if you had inborn talent, you should at least be able to force me to block. But against you, I never need to. You're… You're just not good enough, Wanko." Such a statement struck at Kazuko's heart.
"O-Onee-sama… Please, don't say that!" Kazuko began to cry out.
"Wanko… I agree with her." Tesshin finally spoke up.
"Huh?" And now to hear her grandfather say the same thing.
"Do you remember the first time you told me you wished to devote yourself to martial arts? Even then, I thought you had no talent as a martial artist. So I tried to stop you." Obviously, not enough old man…
Tesshin continued, "Yet through your own sheer force of will, and even when you began coughing blood, you accomplished every task set before you. I realized you had a natural talent for hard work. I chose to gamble on that determination of yours. And in the end, you truly did well. You have a gift. Everything you earned came from your sweat, but too little of that came from talent. This battle proved it. Wanko… Becoming an assistant master at Kawakami Temple isn't the only path available to you. Nor do you have to cease studying martial arts. But… perhaps you can seek a different path?"
"But… what other path?" Kazuko asked weakly.
"Wait one second! Even as a student here, even as an outsider, isn't that just contradictory? To tell her she has no talent for martial arts, then say she can still simply study them? And all of this… I feel you're being to far one-sided about it!" I protested for the first time.
"Nagamasa… Do you think it doesn't hurt me to say this? But we had to tell Wanko someday. I don't want her to pursue a dream she can never achieve." Momoyo replied.
"Momo-senpai… then maybe you didn't…" I could only feel my anger rise.
"Wanko, let's find you another path. Your choices are infinite." Momoyo tried to assuage her sister.
"No, Nagamasa's right! This is too one-sided! To tell me to give up on the thing I've worked ten years for, but say I can somehow still work on it?! What sense does that make!?" Wanko began to protest as she found her voice.
"Wanko…" I said.
"I just can't accept that I don't have any talent!" Wanko spoke up for herself this time.
"I know you can feel it in your bones." Momoyo replied.
Wank continued to speak up, "I know I'm still a long ways away from you, Onee-sama… But I don't want anyone telling me what talents I do and don't have! And even if I don't, I can still make up for it with hard work! Everyone always says you can do anything if you try! That dreams do come true! So please… give me time!"
"No amount of time will change things. That's the truth." Momoyo shot her down.
"…!"
"I've watched you long enough to know…" Momoyo's words still cut through her heart.
"Kh… Ooh…. Ooooh…" Kazuko's eyes began to tear.
"Wanko… You have a gift, but even amazing talent is not enough to be an assistant master at the Kawakami Temple." What contradictory shit is that!?
Which dictates your abilities then!? Talent or your hard work!? Pick one, damn it! My silent fury only built as I could only feel my anger grow exponentially.
"Maybe we have been harsh. Maybe it'd be better to say your talents aren't enough to reach your goal of being an assistant master. But you're more than strong enough to reach any other goal. While you have some fun this summer, spend some of that time to find yourself." Momoyo tries to instead tell Wanko easier then before… as if that makes it any better somehow.
"Do you understand?" Momoyo asks her sister.
"How can I?!" Kazuko's outburst shocks Momoyo. "Who the hell gave you the right to choose for me?! I… I've worked so hard! And after all of this, you're saying I can't succeed? No! You're lying!" Wanko… that was…
"Yeah, you've worked harder than anyone. But… your dream requires clearing a high bar. Hard work alone, it's… just not enough. It won't get you over that." Momoyo replied.
"I don't believe you!" Wanko continued to object.
"Wanko…" Momoyo whispered.
"I've trained for years and years! And now you just want me to just give up?! No! Never Not after how hard I've pushed myself! I don't want to end things like this!" Wanko's continued objections only seem to hurt Momoyo now.
"It's hard to face you right now, when you're looking at me like that." Momoyo said softly. "But… even so. You can't achieve your dre—"
But Lu-sensei interrupted her, "Momoyo! Spare a thought for how Kazuko feels! If she can't move on, then she'll never find another path."
"Assistant Master?" Momoyo wondered what he meant.
"Honestly, even I am still uncertain. I think Kazuko can still improve herself though her hard work. Even so, I've seen too many people devote themselves to martial arts, only to find despair when their own path to assistant master is closed to them." Lu-sensei continued.
"Even so! Then that would be my choice! I wouldn't regret anything!" Kazuko declares.
"Yes, that's right. It's your own path to choose." Lu-sensei agreed. "After all that's been said, Momoyo, give her another chance."
"Alright." Momoyo relented. "You're right. She won't be able to find another path until she accepts that she can't take this one. Wanko, you'll have one last test to prove you have warrior talent."
"Yes, Onee-sama!" Kazuko perked right back up.
"You remember we're hosting a tournament here at the end of August, right?" Momoyo asks her.
"Yep! It's also a festival we put on for the people here in the city." Kazuko replied.
"Yeah, it's also an annual event here at Kawakami Temple. I want you to enter the tournament and win." Momoyo told her sister.
"I will!" Kazuko immediately took the offer.
"It's an amateur tournament. You should be able to." Lu-sensei seemed fine with the idea.
"Any future Kawakami Temple assistant master should certainly be capable of that." Tesshin seemed to accept the idea as well. "But Momoyo, that's not enough."
"Grandpa?" Kazuko wondered what he meant by that.
"Wanko, I have to harden my heart right now. For that is how difficult your dream is." Tesshin told her.
"I know…" She replied.
"The winner of the tournament gets the right to face me in an exhibition match. We'll fight then, try to land a blow on me then. If you can do that, you pass. If I have to block it, than you pass. Strike me with the full force of your determination." Then she became serious, "If you can't do that, then give up on your dreams of becoming an assistant master."
"All right! I'll do it! I'll pass your test, just you wait!" Wanko didn't even hesitate in accepting Momoyo's conditions.
"No hesitation. Wanko… you certainly are strong…" I said.
"Optimistically speaking, she already has the drive to succeed." Lu-sensei said.
"She does, yeah. I know she can do it, but I feel like something else is needed…" I say as I trail off.
"Hmm, what is that?" Lu-sensei wondered what I meant by that.
"Umm… Until then… Could I leave the Kawakami Temple?" Wanko requested.
Tesshin seemed uncertain of this choice, "Do you want to pressure yourself that much?"
"Even with my weapon in hand, I want to take this seriously next time. I'm going to spend all summer training!" Kazuko declared.
"Alright, then if you're working that hard, then I can't wait." Momoyo said. "I'll be looking forward to that day."
"Then goodbye for now!" And just like always she was off!
And just like always, I yelled, "Wait up, Kazuko! How can I support you if you can't hear me?!"
"Hm? Will you look after her?" Momoyo asked me.
"Yes, for the duration of the summer. I'll be there, by her side… always." I replied.
"Oh? And why's that?" Tesshin asked.
"You told Wanko to abandon her dream, and even now she still hasn't given up. Besides… I promised myself just that. That I wouldn't abandon her, no matter what. That's what I've chosen to do." I say resolutely to both of them.
Tesshin seems to stare long into my eyes studying me, "Hmmmmm…"
Then he smiles, "Then it would seem like you have truly found your inner peace… you have chosen the path you which to walk no matter the hardship it might bring. Very well, I shall accept your resolve my young pupil. To be honest, I could feel your anger resonate as we spoke to Kazuko. But I do not blame you for such emotions, as for the decision you have made. Again, I cannot blame you such things."
My eyes widen as I bow respectfully to Tesshin, "Thank you, Master! Goodbye! Wanko, wait up!" I dashed off after Kazuko with the pair of granddaughter and grandfather watching us both.
"Heheh, I never expected young Nagamasa to be such a valiant support of Kazuko… or no… maybe those two were drawn to each other." Tesshin said.
"Yeah… he is supporting her…" Even Momoyo smiled at the sight.
"Oh, I can't wait for the end of August. But Momo… I believe you too will grow stronger as well." Tesshin tells her.
"Yes, thank you very much." Momoyo bows.
"Then perhaps it's time you are taken down a peg or three…" Tesshin replies.
"Oh, I'd love to see you try." Momoyo says now interested in his idea.
"But that is not for me to do… for I already have someone in mind. Not only will you perhaps have your fight with Kazuko, but will you also fight Nagamasa! In a non-stop, full power, match? " Tesshin puts for this challenge.
"You really have… put a lot into him haven't you? Fight Nagamasa huh… To be honest, I've been excited at the prospect. He's come far, and I feel like this summer won't just be time for Wanko to develop, but him as well. Now I can't wait for the end of August." Momoyo replied with an expectant smile on her face.
"Isn't this just a little bit to early, sir?" Lu-sensei asks a bit worriedly.
"Hohoh. Martial artists are sinful creatures. With such an opponent put before him, I know that young Nagamasa will be up to the challenge." Tesshin says.
"Hahah. You planning to retire soon finally?" Momoyo playfully asks him.
"Unfortunately, it appears I cannot until I know that the Temple will be in good hands." Tesshin confessed.
"Hah, it's like all of this stuff has lit a fire under you." Momoyo pointed out.
"Then I suppose all three of you did." Tesshin replied.
"Just please consider your age and your position as grand master of Kawakami Temple! Please think before you even consider fighting!" Even then Lu-sensei was trying to stop them from potentially fighting. "Hah… what a family… and right after Kazuko's trial as well. Kazuko needs to land a blow on Momoyo and even after that Nagamasa must defeat her? Haah…"
About an hour later – Kawakami Kazuko's room.—
Kazuko was packing what she needed to leave the temple for her training, "Hmm, this I'll take, that I don't need…" She only planned on taking the essentials she needed. Only what she needed to leave home to train with. "I only need the bare minimum, so how about this?!"
At the end she looked at the pictures on her desk. Several of them were Momoyo looking gallant, Someday, I want to be as gallant as her."
Then her eyes hit a recent picture she'd had with Nagamasa back during their Hakone trip; it was the two of them side by side, arms around each other in the great outdoors. The other was her, Nagamasa and Chris.
See the pictures she felt a sense of comfort and joy seeing them. Nagamasa had been her biggest supporter in all of this, she was happy someone was in her corner during all of this.
"But I won't stop… I'll reach that goal, my dream!" A dream she would see through. And with that Kazuko said goodbye to he photos and left her room.
The duel would be at the end of August, at the Kawakami Tournament… on August 31st, that would be the day…
