The young wolf

Robb POV

The Gates of the Moon is a stout castle. It had four tall towers that oversaw everything around the castle. Lord Royce's army stood outside the castle. They had set up siege engines but weren't in any hurry.

My host didn't join with Royce's. We waited for Ser Lyn Corbray to show up with his host. They can't let us be, that I was sure of. Yet, it has been four days since we set up our camp in the Vale of Arryn, and no one has come.

"Maybe he saw us and didn't dare to challenge you, Robb," Theon commented.

"Uncle, did you manage to see anything?" I asked my great uncle.

"I have captured a dozen or so scouts," He said. "All of them said they were part of Lyn Corbray's host. Yet my scouts could not find them."

"They are hiding in the mountains," I concluded. "Waiting for a chance to strike."

"If that so, there nothing we can do," Great uncle said.

"We could join with Lord Royce. After all, our goal is to take the Gates of the Moon," Theon replied.

"It wouldn't matter much if we joined Lord Royce," I responded. "Keep looking for them, uncle. I will send a message to Lord Royce for him to start seriously attacking the castle."

"Very well," My uncle replied and left.

"What should I do?" Theon asked.

"Do as you wish. I will go see how my men are doing."

If ser Lyn Corbray doesn't show up soon, I will join with Lord Royce. There is no meaning in waiting for a coward. Still, I was not too fond of the silence. We knew he was somewhere watching the siege.

I went to sleep at night. My men still had high morale. We did kill the Mountain clans, so you could say we accomplished our primary goal. But I can't let my aunt ruin this kingdom anymore. That damn Littlefinger poisons her with his sweet words.

I wonder if my father is still alive. Stannis wouldn't kill him, at least I hoped. I wonder what father would do in my place. Before falling asleep, I saw Grey Wind leaving my tent, going for a night hunt.

The mountains contained many preys for me to hunt, from rabbits to deer. The mountains were covered by a forest full of trees and bushes for me to sneak under. Even when a full moon shone onto the forest, the light didn't reach the ground.

Shadows covered my presence as I crawled to my prey. Silent as a night, I got close to a rabbit. Swiftly as a wind, I plunged at him. After tearing the rabbit apart, I smelt smoke and heard voices.

Leaving the rabbit on the ground, I followed the scent and came upon a camp of humans. They were not sleeping but preparing for something. I saw steel swords in their hands and plate armor on their bodies.

I tried getting closer to see more. But before I could do so, The humans climbed on their horses. A man with long brown hair and a thin body yelled orders. The humans listened to him and then laughed with him. I stayed in the shadows as they rode off.

My eyes opened to see the roof of my tent. It wasn't the first time I dreamed of being Grey Wind. I knew what I saw, thousands of men preparing for battle. It was hard to believe that men would attack us at night. The roads are treacherous in the light of day. At night, I could not imagine how to cross them.

However, it didn't matter. I trusted what I saw. They will attack us soon, and I had to prepare for it. I quickly got dressed and took my sword before leaving my tent. I yelled for the men to wake up and get up.

The camp soon became bustling with men. Some who slept with their armor quickly got up and joined me. Others cursed as they got off their tents half-dressed and with their weapons in their hands.

"Robb, what going on?" My uncle was the first to come to me and ask.

Just before I answered him, I had a thought. They shouldn't know that we were behind Lord Royce's host. So, why would they attack us? No, they were going for Lord Royce. I looked at my great uncle, and a plan formed in my mind.

"Uncle, go to Lord Royce and warn of a night raid," I told him. "Tell him that he has to hold them until we come."

"A night raid?" He asked.

"Go, we don't have time for me to explain."

He looked hesitant at me but still listened to me and left. There was no time for foot soldiers to prepare. I will need to only use cavalry on this, I didn't have many of them, but if we manage to strike ser Lyn Corbray from behind, we will manage to win.

"Robb, what the hell is going on?" Theon came to me, barely dressed.

"Prepare your horse. We have the battle to win," I told him.

Dismissing Theon's confused expression and ordered my men to prepare horses. There was no time to lose. If we miss this opportunity, we won't have a second one.

I should move, but I waited. I saw as Ser Lyn Corbray's host fought against Lord Royce. With the warning coming to him fast enough, he managed to put some defenses. Still, it wasn't sufficient as ser Lyn Corbray's host went deeper and deeper.

"What are we waiting for, Robb?" Theon asked, clutching the reins of his horse.

I didn't answer but watched as ser Lyn Corbray went to the defenses of Lord Royce. I won't give him a chance to escape. I held my hand up. Seeing my signal, Theon took a horn. Letting my hand fall, Theon blew the horn, and we rode to the battle.

We rode fast. Our cavalry struck ser Lyn Corbray's host back before realizing what was happening. There were maybe five thousand of them and about three thousand of us. Still, I didn't let my forces go too deep but encircled them.

I knew he had more foot soldiers. I couldn't let them hide in the mountains, especially if ser Lyn Corbray escaped us. This madness will end tonight. Cutting down the third man I encountered, I saw a thin knight with long black hair going for me.

Ser Lyn Corbray wasn't a fool. He saw that to escape this encirclement. He would need to go through us with all his force or kill me to make others panic. Too bad for him, I knew that too, as four men quickly came in front of me to defend me.

At that moment, I realized how inexperienced I was as ser Lyn Corbray cut them down like they were made of straw. Before I could get my mind straight, ser Lyn Corbray was upon me. Somehow, I blocked his swing with my sword but fell from my horse.

"You should be Stark, boy," Ser Lyn said. "You thought you could defeat me. You alone are not enough."

"Good thing I am never alone."

At my words sunk into him, Grey Wind jumped on him from the side. I watched as my companion tore his neck wide open. He coughed on his blood. Standing up, I walked to him and finished his suffering.

Soon enough, we finished the rest of those who didn't surrender. Without clear leadership, they fell quickly. After the battle, I had time to get up on my horse. I rode to Lord Royce, who was covered in blood.

"Lord Stark, thank you for saving us," Lord Royce bowed to me. "If not for you, I don't know how many we would have lost."

"I was just doing my duty," I answered. "Still, it isn't over. Prepare your horses. I know where the rest of them are hiding."

Lord Royce quickly agreed with me and gathered his men. I led them where I saw the camp from the eyes of Grey Wind. They were hiding in a clearing halfway into the mountain. All sides were covered by lush forest.

It was a great place to hide a host, but they couldn't see us as we approached them from the forest. I didn't rush at them and ordered the men to encircle them. My great uncle took down the sentries quietly. So, when we struck, it was a short and swift battle.

"Robb, we got Lord Corbray and two Redfort brothers alive," Theon came to me to report after the battle.

I looked at the captives. There was no one to stop us from taking the Gates of the Moon. My aunt won't be able to hide in the Eyrie. Once we bring the order back to the Vale, I can return to be by Jon's side.
