Chapter 3: Matt and Dallas

Dallas, a male Golden Retriever, took a deep breath as he walked into his new job's building. Dallas moved to Brisbane two weeks ago and needed to find a job. Dallas chose a local sub shop as his first Job in the city since it was something familiar for the Golden Retriever as he's used to making sandwiches as a job back in America. Once he walked into the building, only two dogs were getting some sandwiches to go. "Dallas! Welcome! There is an apron in the back for you," Duke, a gray German shepherd, said with a welcoming smile. "Okay!" Dallas replied with a smile before he went to the back, where his apron was. Just as Dallas walked into the back, he bumped into someone. "Oh, I'm sorry," Dallas said as he looked at the dog, he bumped into. who was a grey-blue Heeler "No problem, mate, it was my bad." the grey-blue Heeler replied with a smile. Dallas swallowed hard before smiling."You must be the new guy! My name is Matt," Matt said as he ran his hand through his hair.

"N-Nice to meet you, Matt. My name is Dallas," Dallas said nervously, "Nice to meet you, Dallas, So Duke said you used to work making sandwiches," Matt said as he picked up a box full of Chips. "I-I did!" Dallas said nervously. "Great! Was it also a subway?" Matt asked as he took the box of chips to the shelf. "Not exactly, it was a local sub shop I worked at before moving out here to australia," Dallas said with a light chuckle. "Nice! What brings you out to Australia?" Matt asked as he started filling the shelves. Dallas then hesitated to answer since his real reason for moving all this way from home was to get away from his abusive ex boyfriend. "I just wanted a change," Dallas said with a smile.

"Well, you for sure got one mate," Matt said as he wagged his tail before finished filling up the shelf. "Yeah, I sure did," Dallas said with a chuckle. "Now, we have a little tradition here, and Duke likes to make things a little fun around here," Matt said as he turned and looked at Dallas. "Oh?" Dallas asked as he titled his head to the left. "Whenever we get a new emeplyee here, Duke likes to have he or she make a custom sandwich for him to try and then he'll place it on the menu for the sandwich of the month," Matt explained before he went to wash his hands. "That sounds fun!" Dallas said as he prepared to wash his hands next. "It is," Matt said with a chuckle. "Duke like to have fun while working," Matt said as he then started to let Dallas wash his hand as he dried his own.

Dallas washed his hands and then dried them "ready?" Matt asked as he looked at Dallas. "Yeah!" Dallas said as he wagged his tail. "Great! Lets get out there and then once were closed Duke will have you make your sandwich," Matt said as they went out to the front of the shop. "Great! I can't wait!" Dallas said as they walked up to the counter. Matt nodded before turning attention to the customers that were ahead of them. The day went on smoothly as Matt and Dallas took turns taking orders and making sandwiches. Duke also had a hand in helping them as well. By the end of the day it was time to close up and clean up before going into the making of the new sandwich. "Alright! Gather around!" Duke said wagging his tail. Dallas and Matt then met at the front counter where Duke was.

"I'm sure Matt here has told you about our little tradition around here has he?" Duke asked with a smile as he looked at Dallas. "Oh yeah! He told me!" Dallas said with a smile. "Great! Here are the rules! Well… there is none really, just make the best sandwich you can possibly make and Matt and I will be the judge," Duke explained again wagging his tail. "Awesome!" Dallas said while also wagging his tail. "And… start!" Duke said as he wagged his tail. Dallas nodded as started to make the sandwich. Matt and Duke then went to sit down and watched Dallas work his craft.

Within no time Dallas had brought his signature sandwich. Duke and Matt looked at Dallas as he placed down the foot long that was cut into two. "Wow! This looks great mate!" Duke said as he wagged his tail. "Yeah, mate! Looks fantastic!" Matt added. "Wait until you eat it," Dallas said as he wagged his tail happily. Duke and Matt looked at each other and then went for the sandwich. They ate it while wagging their tail. "Wow, this great!" Duke said as he wiped his mouth with a napkin. "What do you say Matt? Is he a keeper?" Duke asked as he turned to his co worker while he was still eating.

Dallas looked at Matt for his approval and was definitely nervous to see what the grey blue heeler would said. After Matt was finished chewing his food, he looked at Dallas and smiled. "I think this sandwich will make a fine addition to our line up," Matt said with a smile before winking to Dallas. Dallas blushed under his fur before looking away and rubbing the back of his neck. "Then it's settled! Dallas, you're sandwich will be a feature for this months sandwich of the month!" Duke said as he turned and looked at Dallas. "Great!" Dallas said as he wagged his tail happily. After cleaning up some more Matt and Dallas started to lock up the shop. Duke had already went home for the night leaving Dallas and Matt by themselves.

"Alright looks like everything is looking great," Matt said as he locked up the doors. "Great! See you tomorrow?" Dallas asked as he looked to Matt. "For sure! I'll be here in the morning making bread," Matt said as he placed his keys in his pocket. "Would you like some help? I can come in and help if you'd like," Dallas offered as they then both started to walk to their cars. "That would great! See you in the morning around six?" Matt asked as he opened his car door. "You bet!" Dallas said as he opened his car door. "Alright, see you tomorrow mate," Matt said with a nod before he got into his car. Dallas nodded as he too got into his own car.

They both went their separate ways in going home. Dallas didn't live too far from his work as he wanted to be close just in case he'd ever get lost in the city. Dallas then walked into his apartment and placed down his keys near the door and stretched. Dallas then locked the door behind him and made sure the door was locked tight. Dallas then made his rounds and checked his apartment while also making sure everything was locked up tight. Dallas sighed in relief as he then went to his kitchen and made himself some dinner. Dallas sat down his couch with his dinner and turned on the TV.

After dinner Dallas cleaned up a bit and unpacked a little bit more before taking a shower and then heading to bed. Dallas then went sleeping now feeling safe for the first time in a while. Early the next morning, Dallas woke up and made himself some breakfast and coffee before heading to the sub shop. He couldn't wait to see Matt and help make fresh bread. Dallas pulled into the parking lot and niticed Matt was already at the shop and unlocking the door. Dallas smiled as he unbuckled himself and walked over to Matt.

"Hey Matt! Good morning!" Dallas said as he walked up to the gray blue Heeler. Matt turned around and smiled at Dallas. "Good morning mate! How'd you sleep?" Matt asked as he unlocked the door and started to go inside with Dallas "I slept good! How about yourself?" Dallas asked as they both walked back to the kitchen. "Good! I also slept good," Matt said with a smile. "Great!" Dallas said just as the two started to wash their hands. "How long have you been in the city mate?" Matt asked while started to get started on the bread making. "It's been about two weeks since moving here, still unpacking and getting things together." Dallas explained as he started to help the gray blue heeler. "Nice, like it so far?" Matt asked as they both started on the bread dough. "Yeah, actually its a beautiful city for sure. I can't wait to see more of it after I settle in," Dallas said with a smile.

"The city is a definitely a beautiful place, you also said you were looking for a change?" Matt asked as he turned and looked at Dallas. "Oh yeah and so far I like it," Dallas said as he started to wag his tail. "Glad you do, how come a sudden change?" Matt asked as he started to roll out the dough. This caught Dallas off guard a bit. The real reason Dallas had made a sudden change in his life was because of his ex boyfriend Dasher. Dallas swallowed a lump in his throat as a sudden memory flashed before his eyes.

(Flashback)

"Come on!" Dasher a male doberman shouted as he watched his football game. Dallas was in the kitchen making some snacks for him and his boyfriend to enjoy while watching the big game. Dallas wagged his tail as he placed the finish touches on the snacks before he started to bring them in the living room. "Prince Huskin has made the touch down!" the new reporter said on the TV. "Finally! Without Prince you'd all be nothing!" Dasher shouted while watching the TV. "Snacks are done babe," Dallas said as he came into the living room with a plater of chips and dip. "Thanks," Dasher said as Dallas placed down the plater in front of him. "Pizza should also be done soon," Dallas said as he sat down next to Dasher. "Cool." Dasher simply said as he started to dig into the chips. "Is our team winning?" Dallas asked as he turned and looked at Dasher. "Yeah, finally after they've given the ball to Prince," Dasher said while still getting into some chips.

"Great!" Dallas said happily while wagging his tail. "Yeah," Dasher replied. After a little bit Dallas went and checked on the pizza which was done and ready to be cut. Dallas pulled put the pizza and lets it cool before cutting into it. "NO!" Dasher shouted in anger. This startled Dallas as he looked back into the living room to eee if everything was alright. "Everything okay babe?" Dallas asked as he stepped into the living room. "NO! EVERYTHING IS NOT ALRIGHT!" Dasher shouted in anger. Dallas hasn't seen this side of his boyfriend before and started to scare him. "W-what's wrong?" Dallas asked nervously. "HE LOST THE BALL! HE LOST THE DAMN BALL!" Dasher shouted while keeping his eyes on the TV. "H-he'll get again i'm sure," Dallas said trying to be helpful. Dasher was paying any attention to Dallas as he keep his eyes on the game. "PASS THE BALL TO PRINCE YOU STUPID IDIOT!" Dasher shouted more.

Dallas then went back into the kitchen and started to cut the pizza. While Dallas was cutting the pizza and getting ready to place them on some plates, he heard Dasher shouted one last time and then a loud cash. "DAMN IT!" Dasher shouted and then a loud crash came afterwards. This made Dallas jump as he then rushed into the living room. "What happened?" Dallas asked rushing into the room. To his surprise Dasher was standing up in front of the coffee table breathing heavily and shaking a bit from all the anger that was building inside of him. The TV on the other hand was cracked and broken from Dasher throwing the remote at it and then punching it. "Dasher! What the hell?!" Dallas shouted as he looked at the TV and then his boyfriend. "DON'T YOU DARE BLAME THIS ON ME!" Dasher shouted as he turned and looked at Dallas. "YOU BROKE MY TV!" Dallas shouted back.

Dasher then got so angry he lifted up the coffee table and turning it on its side making a huge mess with the chips and dip. This made Dallas scared seeing his boyfriend getting so angry. "LAST TIME I CHECKED IT WAS OUR TV!" Dasher shouted as he started to kick and throw things around the room. "S-STOP!" Dallas shouted now backing away from fear. Dasher then jumped at Dallas and grabbed him by the throat and pinned him against the wall. "SHUT UP!" Dasher shouted in Dallas's face. Pure fear was in the Golden Retriever's eyes as he looked into the dog he onced love eyes. Dasher then lets go of him and turn and looks at the mess he had made. "Sorry, I love you, clean this mess up," Dasher said as he looked out the messy living room. Anger started to fuel inside Dallas as he looked at his now messed up apartment and now was told to clean up his boyfriends mess after he made it over a football game.

"No!" Dallas said standing up his for himself. This surprised Dasher. "What?" Dasher asked and he turned and looked at Dallas. "No! You made this mess! You clean it up!" Dallas shouted this ears folded back. Dasher chuckled as if it was funny to him. Suddenly Dasher slapped Dallas across the face. With much force, it forced Dallas to turn his face. Dallas grabbed his cheek as he wasnt expecting the suddenly blow from Dasher. "What? I hit you?" Dasher asked again with another chuckle. Dallas took in a deep breath before answering to Dasher. "No you can't" Dallas said standing his ground. This made Dasher mad as he suddenly punched Dallas causing him to the fall to the ground and making him a fresh black eye. "Do you want to fight?" Dasher asked as he kneeled down to Dallas level.

Now Dallas was fearful for his life as he shook his head no. "good, clean this mess up and i'll go buy us a new TV okay?" Dasher asked in a calm tone. Dallas nodded not knowing what to say or do. "Alright, be back soon, i love you," Dasher said as he kissed the top of Dallas head and stood up. Dallas flinched as Dasher kissed his head before he started to walk out the door. Once Dasher was out of the apartment. Dallas hugged his knees and started to quietly cry to himself. This wasn't dog he met two years ago and this wasn't the dog who truly loved him as he said he did. This was someone else, someone he didn't recognized and someone he knew he had to get away from, this dog was a monster. And if Dallas didn't act fast his life would be in danger.

(End Of Flashback)

"Dallas?" Matt asked looking at the Golden Retreiver. "H-huh?" Dallas asked as he escaped his thoughts. "How come the sudden change mate?" Matt asked as he started to place the bread in the oven. "Oh! Well I really wanted to travel and i think the timing just landed me here," Dallas said with a smile. "That's nice, I do like to travel as well." Matt replied as he started to make more bread but this time it was a different kind of bread. "That's cool," Dallas said with a smile as he started to help with the next batch of bread. The two spent the morning making bread while also getting to know each other. "Do you want to grab some coffee before we open? My treat" Matt asked. As they started to clean up a bit. "Sure!" Dallas said as he started sweeping. Matt smiled as he continued cleaning up.

After the clean up they went to go get some coffee before the opening of the sub shop.the two had gotten their coffee and sat down at a table and chatted a bit. Dallas told many jokes to Matt which made the gray blue heeler laugh. "You're so funny mate," Matt said wiping a tear from his eye from laughing so hard. Dallas chuckled as he took a drink of his coffee, Dallas looked at Matt and felt his heart speed up. He knew Matt was cute and kind and a really nice dog to talk to. Dallas then got lost into his brown eyes and then tried to look away. "Don't miss this up," Dallas thought himself. "He's probably not that way anyways… right? No! Just got out of a relationship!" Dallas shouted in his thoughts. This bad conversation in his head caused Dallas to knock down his cup of coffee on the ground. "Shoot!" Dallas shouted as he quickly tried to clean up. "Let me help you mate," Matt said as he placed his hand on Dallas shoulder. This made Dallas jerk at the feeling of being touched.

Matt then backed up as Dallas looked him with tear in his eyes. "S-sorry," Dallas said as he tried to clean up the mess faster. "Mate it's okay," Matt said still trying to help. Dallas cleaned up with trying to fight back his tears. Dallas then stood up and threw away his empty cup and napkins from the mess of the coffee. Dalla then raced outside of the coffee shop before bumping into a chocolate brown lab. "S-Sorry," Dallas said as he started to breath hard. "It's okay mate, it's no problem," The chocolate brown lab said with a smile. "Come on, Winnie," the chocolate brown lab said to his daughter. "Coming dad!" Winnie a small brown lab said while coming up to the door. Dallas forced a smile and then started to walk down the street.

Matt chased after theb golden retriever. "Dallas, mate, what's wrong?" Matt asked as he got in front of his friend. Dallas looked at Matt with tears into his eyes before he then broke down in front of him. "I'm sorry Matt, I-I" Dallas said before looking away from the gray heeler. "Mate please talk to me, I won't judge you," Matt said trying to make Dallas look at him. Dallas took a deep breath before he looked back at Matt. "I guess I should really explain what I'm really doing out here," Dallas said with a sniff. "Please mate, I'm here for you," Matt said with a soft side smile. "Okay, then lets take a sit," Dallas said as he pointed at a near by bench. Matt nodded as they both then sat down at the bench. "Now, start from the beginning," Matt said just as Dallas then took a deep breath before he started to explain his story.

"So I had to get away from him," Dallas explained now ending the story. Matt then placed his hand on his friends shoulder. "It's not you're fault. He had no right to hit you," Matt said in a serious tone. Dallas then looked at Matt. "what if I am a screw up? What if he was right about me?" Dallas asked looking at his friend. "That's not true!" Matt said almost angrily. "What he did to you wasn't love, he used you and hurt you. That is something no one should ever feel or be treated like," Matt said as he felt his own heart break. Matt then placed his hand on Dallas's knee. "He's not going to hurt you anymore, I won't let that happen," Matt said looking Dallas in the eye. Dallas smiled at that and started to cheer up. "Only my second day getting to know you and I think i made a friend for life," Dallas said with a chuckle. Matt smiled at that. "Yeah you did," Matt said keeping his smile while wagging his tail. Dallas also then started to wag his tail.

One year later…

"When are you going to ask him mate?" Duke asked Matt while the gray heeler was making a sandwich to go. "I-I don't know is it thought obvious?" Matt asked his boss. "Come on mate, it's been a year since hes been here and you still haven't asked him out on a date?" Duke asked giving Matt a sly look. Matt sighed and looked at Duke. "what if he doesn't like me?" Matt asked looking down. "Hey! He's had the biggest crush on you since he showed up mate!" Duke said with a chuckle. "He has? How do you know?" Matt asked looking back at Duke. "I just know these things mate. Dallas is a great guy and you… you need someone like him," Duke said with a warm smile. "You think so?" Matt asked now perking up.

"I know so," Duke said with a wink. Matt sighed and then chuckled before finished his sandwich. "I think you're right Duke, I think you're right," Matt said as he wrapped up his sandwich in a bag. "Oh I know I'm right mate," Duke said with a laugh before leaving the kitchen. Matt rolled his eyes as he started to clean up, Matt then went to his car and got in it. Matt then took a bite of his sandwich before he texted Dallas.

(Texting)

Matt: Hey Dallas can I ask you something?

Dallas looked at his phone and started to wag his tail after seeing the text was from matt.

Dallas: …

Dallas: Hey Matt! Yeah you can ask me anything! You know that!

Matt swallowed hard with his piece of his sandwich going down his throat a little too hard for comfort.

Matt: Would you… like to go on a date with me?

Matt then threw his phone to the side while blushing super hard.

Dallas's heart stopped as soon as he saw the text. Was this really happening? Was Matt really asking him on a date. Dallas hesitated while typing and deleting what he wanted to say and then he finally replied.

Matt started eating fast and was too nervous as his phone buzzed from his passenger side of his car. Matt sighed before he threw away his wrapper from his sandwich before grabbing his phone and looked at his text message.

Dallas: i thought you never ask! Of course! I'd love to!

Matt wagged his tail wildly as he smiled wide before replying to Dallas.

Matt: Great! How does tomorrow night sound?

Dallas:...

Dallas: Perfect!

Matt smiled at that.

Matt: Alright, see you then!

Dallas: See you then!

(End of Texting)

Matt then placed his down his phone and started his car. "That was easy," Matt said as he started started driving home. Matt had already started thinking of places to take Dallas for their first date and started thinking about how it would go. "I shouldn't be nervous, this is Dallas," Matt thought to himself as he continued to drive home. Meanwhile Dallas was at home jumping for joy that he finally got a date with the one person he cared for the most. "He likes me! He really likes me!" Dallas said jumping for joy and wagging his tail.

The Next day…

It was the next night and Dallas looked in the mirror and adjusted his little red bow tie trying to make sure that he was presentable for his date, his first date in over a year. Dallas smiled while looking in the mirror before he heard a knock at his door. "That should be him," Dallas said as he happily walked over to the door. "Hey M-" Dallas started to say until he opened the door all the way and saw Dasher at his front door. "D-Dasher?" Dallas said backing away. Dasher was holding a rose as he looked at his ex boyfriend. "Dallas, Babe where have you been? Why would you leave without saying anything?" Dasher asked as he step forward towards Dallas. Dallas's heart started to speed up with fear.

The golden retriever was frozen with fear as the Dobermann tried to enter his apartment. Suddenly Dallas entered fight or flight mode and he chose to fight. "No!" Dallas shouted as he tried to slam the door his Dashers face. Dasher was quick to react and stop the door from being closed. Dallas tried with his all his might to keep the door from opening. "No!" Dallas shouted still trying to keep Dasher outside. "Lets talk about this Dallas! You know I still love you!" Dasher shouted trying to get in. "Go away Dasher!" Dallas shouted with a mixed of fear and anger at the same time.

"Let me in!" Dasher shouted as he kicked the door open making Dallas fall backwards and hitting his head making a cut. Dasher then walked into the apartment and slammed the door behind him. "Now, let's talk," Dasher said as he started to walk over to Dallas. Dallas then looked at his ex as he walked towards him just as his phone started to ring. "Why would you keave me!" Dasher shouted as he started to smash things around the apartment. Dallas started to crawl away trying to get his phone. "I loved you so much!" Dasher shouted while smashing more of Dallas's things. Dallas then got to his phone and answered it. "Hey Dallas! Just about a block away and-" Matt started to say while driving until he was interrupted. "Matt! Help!" Dallas shouted in tears. "Who the hell is Matt?!" Dasher shouted as he grabbed the phone and ended the call. "Dallas?! Dallas?! DALLAS!" Matt shouted in fear as he started to speed down the road while calling the police.

Dasher crushed Dallas's phone and threw it to the side. "YOU FOUND SOMEONE BETTER THAN ME?!" Dasher shouted in pure rage. "Dasher, please stop!" Dallas shouted with tears running down his muzzle. Dasher then went to the kitchen and grabbed a knife. "If I can't have you, then no one can," Dasher growled as he walked over to Dallas slowly. "Dasher no!" Dallas cried out loud while getting ready to get stabbed. Matt busted through the door and jumped at Dasher. "Stay away from him!" Matt shouted as he held onto Dasher while the Dobermann tried to get the gray Heeler off of him. "Get off!" Dasher shouted as he slammed Matt against the wall on his back which made the gray heeler let go of him.

Dasher turned and looked at Matt before looking back at Dallas. "You left me for this jerk?" Dasher asked grinding his teeth together while breathing hard. Matt looked up at Dasher and glared at him. "I least I can give Dallas love and appreciation that he needs! Because I LOVE HIM!" Matt shouted in anger towards Dasher. Dasher huffed and puffed out hi chest. "Aww is you're ego hurt?" Matt asked with a smirk and a light chuckle. "Shut up!" Dasher shouted with a loud growl. "Aww poor baby," Matt said with another smart chuckle. "I SAID SHUT UP!" Dasher shouted before he stabbed Matt. "NO!" Dallas cried out just as police had came into the apartment and drew their guns at Dasher.

Dasher dropped the knife and was placed into custody. Dallas stood up and ran over to Matt who was holding the spot of where he was stabbed. "No, no, no, Matt, please stay with me okay?" Dallas said while also placing pressure on his wound. "Hey, I'm not going anywhere okay?" Matt said softly as he looked at Dallas and then winked at him. Dallas then kissed hom on the top of his head. "Let's get you to the hospital okay?" Dallas said with tears before again kissing his boyfriend on the top of his head. Matt nodded as the EMT's came and got him to take him to the Hospital.

"Hey mate, you should get you're head checked out," one of the EMT''s said to Dallas while looking at Dalla's cut on his head. "C-can I ride with him?" Dallas asked while turning to the EMT. "Sure mate," go ahead," the EMT said with a nod of approval. Dallas nodded back and then went into the same Ambulance as Matt. Dallas then held Matt's hand as they closed the door to the back of the Ambulance and went on their way to the Hospital.

(Four months later…)

"What do you think about this?" Dallas asked while showing Matt a small little lamp. "I think my mum would like that!" Matt said as he wagged his tail. "Alright, lets grab it," Dallas said as they went up to the front. "Still looking for part time help Jerry?" Matt asked the old shop owner. The old Corgi sighed as he started to wrap up the lamp. "I am, hoping someone is interested," Jerry said as he pulled up the amount that was due on the lamp. "You'll find someone, Jerry I know it," Matt said with a wink to Jerry. "Thanks mate, I'm sure I will," Jerry said as he handed Dallas the lamp that was in a bag. "Thanks Jerry, We'll be back next week for new stuff that come in," Dallas said with a smile as he took the lamp. "Sounds good mate," Jerry said with a smile. Dallas and Matt then started to make their way towards the font door.

"I'm sure he'll find some help soon," Dallas said as he cuddled up to Matt as they walked. "Me too otherwise his nephew would have to come and help and hes not very nice," Matt explained. "Oh yeah that one teenager that was working here last month?" Dallas asked as they walked up to the door. "Yeah, him" Matt said as he rolled his eyes. Just as the two were about to open the door to leave the small shop. A male blue Heeler Husky mix around the age of seventeen opened the door to let them come out. "Oh, you can come in mate," Matt said with a warm smile. The blue heeler mix smiled before answering Matt. "Thanks man," he said before entering the store. "Hello sir?" the teenager asked as he walked over to Jerry. Matt and Dallas stopped and watched as the teen was talking with Jerry. "I was wondering about the help wanted sign outside," the teenager asked curiously. Jerry perked up with happines. "Oh! You've come to the right place! What's you're name mate?" Jerry asked with a side smile. "Thomas sir," Thomas replied with a smile.

"I think Jerry just found his help," Matt said with a smile as he and Dallas started to leave the store. "Yeah, I think he did," Dallas said as he held Matt's hand while they left the store.
