Author's Note: I want to start with a big thank you to Sour Annie for leaving me a review in the last chapter. It kept me going and gave me hope for the story. Well, I will speak more at the end of this chapter, hope everyone enjoys it because it gets even more interesting from this point.
Danny clutched Sam closely against himself as a horde of moviegoers rushed by them, some colliding with them. Since everyone was running from the movie theater, then the ghost must be inside the building.
"You think it's the same one that was after you before?" Sam inquired while turning to face Danny.
"I'm not sure. There is only one way to find out, right?"
Danny slowly released Sam from his embrace, and as he did so, she noticed a very fine string hanging from Danny's red jacket. She held Danny still while she examined the string that was leading towards his back. While Danny was intrigued by Sam's scrutiny of him, he decided that it would be preferable for her to complete her task so that he could soon receive some answers from her when she was done. He stiffened with slight embarrassment in her grasp; she spun him around and grabbed something from the small of his lower back.
"Danny? Let me ask you, was the ghost that got away from you a spider?"
Danny quickly spun around to face her, "And how do you know that?!"
She clutched a tiny white spider with fluorescent green eyes in her fingers and moved her other hand in the direction that the string—in this case, a web—was pointing, which was the theater's entryway. "Looks like that ghost spider must have left you a little friend to keep track of your movements."
Danny sighed in frustration and said, "Just my luck, I can't ever catch a break."
Danny drew down the sleeve of his jacket to show a tightly wound silver metal bracelet around his wrist. At the center, there was an emerald crystal, as small as a rain droplet, where the light had broken into a brilliant shimmer. He stretched out his arm and positioned his wrist in the direction of the spider in her fingers, which was being drawn toward the bead by a beam of green light. Danny casually rolled back his jacket sleeve when it was gone.
"Now it's that other spider's turn." Danny took off sprinting, but before he was out of sight, he turned around and said, "Don't wait for me, go home for the time being! This place isn't safe anymore."
Since they always fought side by side, she couldn't help but stare back at him in confusion and consider whether she ought to object. She even wondered if he was speaking to the right person, but people were in imminent danger now, and she didn't want to keep him around any longer than necessary considering that he continued to wait for her response. His expression was calm but pleading, he didn't want her to wait up for him this time. Sam nodded, and after receiving the assurance he wanted, he quickly disappeared around the corner of the building. Undoubtedly, he looked for a place to hide before transforming into his ghostly persona and flying into the building.
After everyone had gone screaming, Sam noticed that there were fewer and fewer people around. Suddenly, a deafening explosion rocks the area, unleashing a wave of destruction and chaos. The shockwave sends debris flying, shattering glass and engulfing the surroundings in a haze of smoke and dust, to the point that it knocked her off her feet. The fight between Danny and the ghost that chased after him earlier must have started between them, and it was intensifying rather quickly. She got back up to her feet and didn't bother dusting herself off, and rather searched her pockets, looking for anything that could be useful to help Danny.
She was kicking herself mentally for not bringing her anti-ghost weapons from home with her, which she always did when she goes out with Danny on the account that he frequently gets into fights with ghosts. Without any equipment, she couldn't pursue the ghost with Danny, but she also was unwilling to leave him on his own. Not that she didn't have faith in his abilities but that she didn't like the idea of being useless to him at this moment, she wanted him safe and sound as much as he did with her.
Then, an idea came to her. Up until this point, when she lifted a hand to her neck and lightly caressed a black choker with a rose locket hanging in the center, she had completely forgotten about it. If she was careful with it then she couldn't see a reason why it wouldn't work, the only thing she would have to worry about is keeping it out of range of Danny.
"I can still help him." Sam mused to herself.
"I hope you mean me because I definitely need it right about now."
Sam looked around, seeking to identify the person that had just spoken.
"Chill, it's just me." Dash entered her field of vision from the shadows and into the brightness of the movie theater's blinking overhead sign.
In his presence, Sam stiffened up and raised her guard. "Calm down, really? After what you did to me earlier? —And to Danny? You're insane."
"Does that really matter right now? Fenton had no reason to push his nose where it didn't belong. My business was with you, not him." Dash slipped his hands into his varsity jacket and grinned." I honestly don't know why you are siding with him so aggressively right now; it looks like he ran away as soon as he had the chance, leaving you yet again to fend for yourself."
"Dash, take this friendly advice and get out of my face. Right now." Sam retorted fiercely, feeling that she had no reason to defend Danny or herself for someone like him. "Or you're in for a world of hurt."
"Alright, alright, I get it. He's a sensitive subject for you. He's not even the one I came to talk to you about."
"I don't give a damn what you came here for. We're done here!" Sam started to approach him, and as she passed him, she tapped him with her shoulder to get him out of the way.
Dash took hold of her arm and brought her close to him before encircling her with his other arm. "Fine, we'll do things your way, don't speak to me but you will listen to what I have to say. First off, I'm not sure what it is about girls like you, girls who have a thing for ghosts, but whatever it is that kink of yours I know for a fact that you're planning to go back into the building with that ghostly spider because, like we all know, that ghost boy will show up eventually to take care of that thing. If he hasn't showed up already that is and is already inside the building and that's why you can't wait to go back inside."
She wasn't chasing Danny around; they were a team, and they fought supernatural beings together. That's just how it was between them, it was natural. Even though Dash had no way of knowing that, and he should never learn that fact, the idea that was accusing her of stalking someone disturbed her. She wished he'd just get to the point already and let her go; she couldn't push him away in this awkward position he had her in.
"I'm almost done here, don't start to lose your cool, Sam." He smiled, leaning further down into her ear." That's why Paulina stayed behind in the building, she refused to run out with me like the rest of us did. I didn't pretend to know why; I knew she was going to hide and wait for that ghost boy. Now, when you go back in there make sure you bring Paulina back out with you."
Dash let her go after he was done with his long speech.
"What, really? You came to me for this, the girl she was picking on earlier along with you?" Sam scoffed. "You could be giving me too much credit for all you know, I mean, what makes you think I would have agreed to this? It's hilarious."
"No, I don't THINK you would help, I KNOW you will." Dash made a wagging motion with his finger in the air. "Just what I've said before -Like Fenton, you've always been that way—poking your nose where it doesn't belong and doing it when no one asked you to. However, I'm asking for it this time."
"One minute I'm like Paulina and now I'm like Danny, nothing's consistent with you. And given how much you seem to care about her, why am I not surprised that you choose not to go after her yourself." Sam crossed her arms over her chest.
"Because I know my own limitations and I won't put myself at risk for her idiotic whims." he mocked.
He had a valid point, after all; She wasn't about to disagree with him about those who refused to support acts that endangered the lives of those who couldn't care for themselves.
With a final deep breath, Sam acquiesced to his demands. Dash smiled self-satisfied at her.
"I'll go, but don't forget that you have to stay outside. Don't make it any more difficult than it needs to be." Sam poked a finger into his chest. "Get it?"
Dash crossed his hand over hers, allowing her palm to rest flat against his chest. "I'll be waiting right here for you, sweetheart."
"You ought to tell Paulina that when she's out here safe and sound," Sam said, yanking her hand away in disgust.
Sam ignored him and started walking in the direction of the entrance, softly touching the rail on the door before pushing it open.
It seemed as if she were entering a different universe after passing through that entrance—one of violence replacing the pleasant outdoor scenery. With cautious steps, Sam enters the movie theater, the scene of devastation laid out before her. The air is heavy with the acrid scent of burnt debris as broken glass crunches and echoes beneath her feet with every step. She scans the area, her piercing eyes searching for any signs of life amid the wreckage, prepared to confront the horrors that await within.
To her relief, she didn't see Paulina anywhere but that only meant that she must be further within the building, probably within one of the theater rooms. Especially the one where all the muffled noises of an ongoing fight were occurring.
Moving through the ravaged theater, Sam cautiously entered one of the theater rooms. The room is shrouded in darkness, broken rows of seats scattered haphazardly. The flickering light from a damaged projector casts eerie shadows across the walls. Sam's brow furrows in surprise and concern as she witnesses the fantastical scene unfold before her—Danny locked in a fierce battle with a towering, ghostly spider. As her gaze remains fixed on the combat, she notices the unique characteristic of the spider—it is completely white, contrasting against the darkened surroundings. The milky hue seems to exude an ethereal glow, intensifying the otherworldly nature of the creature. The dim light gleams off Danny's costume, highlighting the determination etched on his face.
With a quick and silent motion, she gently urges herself to crouch down behind a row of theater seats, her movements fluid and precise. The shadows provided a semblance of cover as she hid, careful to avoid drawing any attention to herself, neither Danny nor the monster noticing that she was there. Sam's eyes remain fixed on the ongoing clash, her focus unwavering. The anticipation and tension hung heavy in the air, she clung tightly to her rose pendant as she waited for the opportune moment to emerge and lend her aid when the time was right. She wondered why Danny hadn't forced the spider outside or had it chased after him outside where he could have more range of motion and use his powers.
Her attention momentarily shifts from the battle though as she catches sight of Paulina, trapped amidst the debris. Now she understood why Danny never forced the spider out, he was valiantly trying to fend off the advances the giant arachnid made towards Paulina. He couldn't put her in further danger by compromising the integrity of the building while she was trapped. Sam's protective instincts surge to the forefront, her heart pounding with a combination of concern and determination. She carefully navigates her way through the treacherous terrain, her movements agile and calculated as she traverses the rubble that separates her from the trapped Paulina. With each passing obstacle, she draws nearer to her, her resolve solidifying as she envisions the moment, she will be set free from her perilous predicament.
Sam's eyes lock onto Paulina, her distress is evident as she struggles to escape the debris that surrounds her. Without a moment's hesitation, she extends a hand towards her, Sam's voice emanating calm assurance, "I've got you, stay calm."
"What-! What are you doing here?!" Paulina was amazed to see Sam in front of her.
"Not now. I have to get you out of here first." Sam reaches down to the debris that trapped Paulina, a long piece of the ceiling in this case, and begins to push. But despite all her pushing, the piece didn't move an inch.
"Paulina, we need to work together," she insists, her voice filled with urgency. She positions herself strategically, giving Paulina space to maneuver. "Push against the debris with all your might when I count to three. Ready? One... two... three!" With synchronized effort, Sam and Paulina exerted their strength, combining forces to lift the heavy slab of debris off her. Sam grunts, her muscles straining as she holds the debris up, creating a narrow gap for Paulina to escape. As she finally manages to wriggle free, relief washes over both, a fleeting moment of triumph amid chaos.
"Paulina! Don't worry, I'll be there soon!" Danny Phantom yelled as he swooped above the spider, blasting it with green ectoplasmic energy, causing it to screech in pain.
Right, we need to find a safe spot, away from danger, Sam thought. Danny still thinks that Paulina is trapped underneath and won't fight the ghost with all his strength yet and it's not like she can yell at him that she rescued Paulina. That could cause the spider to notice them and head right to them.
Without hesitation, Sam takes hold of Paulina's hand and swiftly leads her behind a row of theater seats that she was hiding behind earlier. As they huddle together, Sam leans in close, her voice barely above a whisper. "Stay quiet and stay low. I know the way out from here."
Paulina pulled her hand away from Sam's, shaking her head in desperation, "No, I won't leave the ghost boy, I won't leave him like this."
Sam understood at that moment that Paulina was worried for Danny, but staying there was causing more trouble for him than staying and she had to understand that. Once Paulina is safely out of the way then she will return to Danny and help him finish off that spider. Sam stares back at Danny as sweat begins to bead on Danny's forehead as he maintains a steely expression, displaying the determination of a hardened warrior. His priority remains the same — protecting Paulina at all costs.
"You don't get it, Paulina, you are beyond your depth here. The best way to help him right now is to get out of his way and let him finish the job." Sam tries to reassure her." He'll be fine, he always is."
"No, I can't. I won't." Paulina couldn't hold her worry so much anymore that tears began to shed from her eyes. "Please, you go. I don't want anyone to get killed because of me."
Sam's eyes widen at her determined words, a mix of worry and admiration flickering across her face. She briefly pauses, assessing the situation and contemplating Paulina's words, trying to find a way to compromise. With a solemn expression, she reaches for Paulina's hand, guiding it to the rose locket attached to her black choker. "Take this," Sam says, her voice filled with a mixture of caution and trust.
Paulina reached around Sam's head to untie the choker from her neck, she gently pulled it from Sam and held it in her hand, rolling it around her fingers.
"What's this?"
"Right now, it's a locket, but what's special about it is what's inside it," Sam poked the rose.
Paulina reached with her other hand to open the clasp, but Sam grabbed her before she was able to do so.
"Not yet, inside is a powder I ground down from a flower called a Blood Blossom. It's not harmful to us normal people but can be extremely lethal to ghosts depending on the number of flowers in use. But since this powder is made from one flower then it should be more than enough to immobilize that giant spider." Sam explained to her, and with each word Sam spoke Paulina's eyes were widening more and more.
"Alright, this amount of powder may be enough to freeze that spider, but how would I know this amount might be lethal enough to kill the Ghost Boy?!"
"I don't know that either, Paulina, I've never tested any of this because it's too dangerous. That's why you must make sure that Danny Phantom is far away when you throw this at the spider. Can you do this, or would you prefer I do it instead?" Sam clasped both her shoulders, watching for any hint of hesitation.
But there was none that Sam could find because Paulina reassuringly tightly held the rose locket in her hand and stood up. Sam stayed crouched and hid, Paulina sat on the top of the row of the theater seats and looped both her legs over them so she could land on the other side.
Danny stopped in his movements when he noticed Paulina's movements. Anxiety grips Danny's heart as he watches the giant spider's attention shift toward Paulina, its spectral gaze fixated on her vulnerable form. Fear and determination intertwine within him, fueling his resolve to protect her at any cost. With a fierce determination etched on his face, he leaps forward, interposing himself between Paulina and the monstrous creature, using a powerful and continuous blast of green ectoplasmic energy that erupts from both his hands.
"Paulina, please! Run! I'll hold it off!" His voice carries a mix of desperation and determination, wishing her to trust in his abilities while he buys her the precious time she needs to escape. Little does he know; she possesses a weapon capable of vanquishing the monstrous specter. However, in this moment of chaos, it remains concealed, its potential power a secret yet to be revealed.
"I won't leave you! I beg you, Ghost boy, you will have to trust me!" Paulina yelled from behind him.
Danny's brow furrows in frustration as she stubbornly refuses to budge from her position, locked in a defiant stance against the colossal phantom arachnid. Despite his desperate pleas for her to flee, he understands her determination and the fire within her eyes.
"You have to fly away and leave me with it, again trust me, what I have here is dangerous to you!" Paulina begged him, as he continued with the wall of ghostly energy separating them from the spider.
Danny couldn't believe the unexpected request that emerged from her lips, urging him to step aside and out of harm's way. His eyes widen in disbelief and concern, a flicker of fear dancing behind his otherwise resolute gaze. The thought of leaving Paulina vulnerable, even for a moment, sends a chill down his spine, battling against his instincts as a protector. Torn between his duty and the impending danger, he reluctantly contemplates her plea.
His energy blasts have started to weaken with the spider's continuous onslaught, he couldn't keep doing this for much longer.
"Do it, it's time! This could kill you! Please!" A mix of anxiety and reluctance twists within Danny's gut as he registers desperation in Paulina's voice. With a heavy heart, he flew away from Paulina, his gaze fixed on her.
As the colossal spider hurtles towards her, Danny's heart pounds in his chest, his protective instincts vying for control. Every fiber of his being screams to rush in and intercept the imminent threat, but he squares his shoulders and stands firm, battling the ferocious urge to intervene. His eyes widen in alarm as he witnesses Paulina run towards the specter and throw a red object with a swift and determined motion.
He observes as the red object Paulina threw hits the bulbous abdomen of the spider, from that point of contact, the red object explodes into a mist of red dust engulfing it. The dust had indeed proved destructive, the creature writhes and shrieks in an agonizing symphony of pain, its monstrous form now vulnerable and weakened.
Now, Danny understood the gravity of the situation, the danger that Paulina wanted to protect him from, the powder she threw was Blood Blossoms. He couldn't even begin to comprehend where she got that from or how she knew that it was dangerous to ghosts. But he would have to figure that out from her later, he aimed his right arm towards the writhing spider, finally in a weakened enough strength that it wouldn't be able to fight off the beam of his green crystal. In no time, Danny was able to absorb the enormous spider into a spiral of energy that led back to his bracelet.
Paulina watched in awe as the whole scene unfolded.
Danny finished absorbing the creature and stayed floating in midair, watching Paulina with a serious expression that she couldn't interpret. Without even a chance to blink, Danny used his incredible speed to shoot toward Paulina to stand right in front of her, only a few inches from her face. His neon eyes bore into her chocolate ones with an angered intensity, his voice firm but tinged with a wave of anger laced with a vulnerability that reveals his fear of losing a life because of him, "What were you thinking, risking yourself like that? Do you have any idea of how easily things could have gone wrong here, following me here?!"
"Yes, I am sorry, Ghost boy. I didn't mean to get in your way like that, but I just had to find you. To have a chance to see and speak to you." Pauline pled; she sniffed away the tears that were in danger of seeping out of her eyes.
Danny's stern expression softens ever so slightly, his grip loosening just a tad. "What do you mean, finding me? Why would you have to look for me?" He raises an eyebrow, intrigued yet cautious. "Is everything alright? Are you in any danger?"
Anxiety courses through her veins, making her heart race and her palms grow clammy. It feels as if a thousand butterflies have taken flight within Paulina's stomach, their wings fluttering with anticipation. Her words catch in her throat, her adrenaline surging as she gathers the courage to express the unspoken truth that has been weighing on her heart. Each breath feels shaky as if she's standing on a precipice, unsure of what awaits on the other side.
Danny's features soften even further, his gloved hand reaching up to gently place it on her shoulder. "Paulina, you know I can't protect you properly if you don't trust me enough to confide in me. Whatever it is, I promise to listen and help you the best way I can. You're not alone in this."
His beautiful features with eyes that bore into her very soul, searching for answers in the best way that he could help her.
The urge to confess pulses within her, growing stronger with each beat of her heart. It's an overwhelming force, an impassioned longing that demands to be set free. "I-I love you! I love you so much!"
Shock and disbelief ripple across Danny's features, his eyes widening as he takes in the weight of her words. A rush of conflicting emotions floods over him, momentarily leaving him speechless. His voice trembles ever so slightly as he responds, "I... I never expected... I..."
"All this time, all this time, since the first moment I saw you a few years ago, I've been in love with you." Paulina reached and grabbed his hand, holding it up to her face." For so long I wondered if I should tell you, and I wasn't planning on ever telling you, but I couldn't keep it in anymore. I thought I would always be satisfied with watching you from afar, but not anymore, I want to be more with you. Please, I just don't want you to hate me for this, for trying to fight with you against that spider."
A conflicted expression crosses Danny's face, his eyes clouded with reluctance. He takes a step back, his hand slipping from hers as he visibly grapples with his internal turmoil. "Paulina, you deserve someone more attainable, I'm a ghost after all, you need someone who can offer you more than a life filled with hardships," he says, his voice heavy with a mix of confusion and self-doubt. His words carry a touch of concern, his gaze searching Paulina's for understanding. "You have to understand, that love is a complicated thing," he continues, his voice gentle yet tinged with caution. "Being in a high-stakes environment, it's natural to feel a strong connection to the one person who's always been there, rescuing you so many times whenever there's trouble. But perhaps what you're feeling is gratitude, admiration, or even infatuation, and confusing it with love. I don't want you to decide too quickly. Take some time to reflect on your feelings, and truly understand them. I'm sorry for confusing you."
A pained expression flickers across her face, her eyes welling with a mixture of hurt and frustration. It's as if Danny's words have struck a nerve within her, challenging the validity of her own emotions.
Surprised by Paulina's sudden display of frustration, Danny's eyes widen as her hands reach out and forcefully grip his collar, pulling him closer to her. The moment hangs in the air, charged with tension before her lips meet his in a passionate and desperate kiss.
Author's Note: I think ending it with a kiss was a good move, don't you? I hope I was able to capture Paulina's yearning for Danny and not only hers but also Sam's. I was having trouble with this chapter and kept rewriting it over and over again, maybe it was because it was longer than my previous ones.
But regardless, I will keep trying my best and remind everyone to leave your thoughts on this chapter. Tell me any of your concerns for the future of the characters xD Thank you!
