It was May 13th, 1944.
Alice wiped sweat off her brow as she finished scrubbing her stained dress in her small garden. It was a relatively warm day in May. Her stomach churned oddly today. She couldn't place it, but she knew something was happening.
The nerves of the possible Ally invasion had been building at an hourly rate now.
She jumped when she heard her name called.
"Alice!" Came the rushed voice of Rose, a new launderer she had quickly befriended on base. "Alice! Get to the base, quickly! The men are moving out! It was announced this morning, nobody can leave! Now is your only chance to say goodbye!"
Alice dropped what she was doing and ran back to the base with Rose before she could even finish talking.
It was organized mayhem. Men gathering their supplies and throwing them onto trucks, some still packing. Alice desperately looked around. Bill spotted her and pecked her cheek.
"He's still in the barracks. Careful, he's angry." He said, loading his bag onto a truck.
"Angry?" Alice gasped.
"Let's just say the announcement ruined his plans for this weekend." He smirked before pulling her into a tight hug. "Take care of yourself, Gorgeous. Love ya."
"You do th' same, Bill. Love you too." Alice said, pecking his cheek.
Bill smiled and pulled away. "Go get him before it's too late."
Alice nodded and ran to the barracks.
A few of the other men had just finished packing and walked past her. The last one in the room was Eugene. He did indeed look angry.
She could see him quickly wipe a tear away. Her throat clenched.
"Gene." She whimpered. "Love?"
His head snapped up when he heard her.
He tossed his items half-heartedly to the side and jumped up to her, quickly taking her into his arms and kissed her hard.
"I thought I wouldn't get t'say goodbye." He nearly growled as he planted kisses all over her face.
He hugged her tight. "J'taime mon Chérie."
He pulled back to study her face. "Goddammit, Chérie, please don't forget me."
Alice giggled. "How could I? I love you. Now, don't get yerself killed, okay?"
Gene smiled. "I'll do mah best, ma'am."
"ROE! TIME TO GO!"
Gene took Alice's face in his hands and kissed her more passionately than ever. He then grabbed his gear pecked her lips again before marching to the door. He paused before stepping out. He turned.
Alice took in the sight before her, Eugene in his full khaki uniform and bags hanging off his shoulders. He looked so handsome, yet she felt so scared for him.
"Chérie, if I come back from this..."
"ROE!!"
"If I come back from this, I am going to ask you to marry me. Will you say yes?" His blue eyes were pleading. He looked so remarkably young.
Just a kid going off to war. But still a man who had Alice's full heart.
Alice choked back sob while nodding with a smile.
Gene beamed. "Then Ah will be sure t'come back t'you mon Amour."
He stepped out.
"I love you wi' all mah heart, Miss Alice Black!" She heard him shout and she laughed as she ran to the door, finding the truck moving with him standing in it.
The men were wolf whistling and cheering.
"And I love you with all me life, Eugene Roe!" She called back to him.
His smile was the biggest she had ever seen it. She felt hers was just as big.
