Chapter 6

Reconvene

Dorothy stood next to Howard who was covered in overalls and a pair of goggles. She was dressed in the same attire, helping Howard slowly take apart the Hydra Minisub.

Howard pursed his lips together. "I don't think I've ever seen a sub like this before."

"Well, we weren't exactly prepared for Hydra to show up here and take the serum today either," Dorothy said as she looked closer. "They must be getting very desperate." She took a breath. "And if they thought of becoming desperate…"

"Yeah… afraid that the doctor would succeed."

"He did, Howard. With Rogers, he did succeed." Dorothy pointed out softly. It was a good step in the right direction, but it wasn't the outcome that some people had hoped for. They had hoped for an army of Super Soldiers and they only got one of them.

Howard nodded his head knowing his sister was correct.

CAFACAFA

Dorothy continued to help Howard work on the submarine in hopes of trying to figure out how it worked.

Colonel Phillips entered with Senator Brandt and his aides on his heels.

"Colonel Phillips, my committee is demanding answers," Brandt said, giving him grief about what was going on.

"Great. Why don't we start with how a German spy got a ride to my secret installation in your car?"

Brandt frowned and shut his mouth.

Phillips turned to the Stark siblings as Steve and Peggy joined them in the room. "What've we got?"

"Well, speaking modestly, I'd say I'm the best mechanical engineer in the country…" Howard said as he opened a hatch revealing some impressive circuitry blinking inside of it. "And I've got no idea what any of this is or how it works. We're nowhere near capable of this technology."

"Then who is?" Brandt questioned looking at the two of them.

"Hydra." Phillips and Dorothy said at the same time.

Brandt looked at the two of them blankly.

"I'm sure you've read our briefings," Phillips said as he crossed his arms looking at Brandt.

"I'm on several committees, Colonel."

"Hydra is the Nazi deep science division. It's led by Dr. Erskine's first test subject, Johann Schmidt." Dorothy explained as she shook her head removing her goggles.

"Hydra's practically a cult. They worship Schmidt, think he's invincible." Phillips said with a nod of his head.

"So what are you going to do about it?"

"I spoke to the President this morning. As of today, the SSR's being re-tasked."

Peggy looked at Phillips shocked. "Colonel?"

"We're taking the fight to Hydra. Pack your bags, Agent. You, too, Stark. The three of us fly to London tonight."

Dorothy nodded her head as she looked at Howard.

"Sir? If you're going after Schmidt, I want in." Steve finally spoke up looking at the Colonel.

"You're an experiment. We're sending you to Alamogordo."

"As what, a lab rat? The serum worked!"

"I asked for an army. All I got is you. And you are not enough."

Steve looked rather shocked.

Brandt waved his hand. "With all due respect, Colonel, I think we may be missing the point. You've seen Steve here in action. More importantly, the country's seen it."

Brandt's aid handed over a copy of the New York Examiner.

"Enlistment lines have been around the block since this hit the newsstands. You don't take a soldier, a symbol, like this and hide him in a lab."

Steve looked surprised at what Brandt was saying.

"He needs to be out there, showing the world what the American fighting man is made of. Son, do you want to serve your country? On the most important battlefield in this war?"

"It's all I want."

"Then congratulations. You just got promoted."

Dorothy blinked a few times, confused about what had just happened.

Howard put his hand on his sister's shoulder and led her out of the room. "Come on, we have a plane to prepare."

Dorothy let out a breath and nodded her head. "Yes, I suppose you're right Howard." She said softly not liking the idea of what was going on back in the room. She was worried that it would smudge the good doctor's name.

Howard took her out of the room. "That is one conversation that neither of us want to get into."

"The Senator is going to make him a lab rat in front of people to sell things, Howard."

"I know Dorothy but you know that it's impossible to figure out what's going on through his brain."

"He should be on the field, Howard, helping the troops."

Howard shook his head. "I know you want to help, but it's best if you stay out of it."

Dorothy let out a breath. "You're right."

"Of course I am," Howard said with a smile. He didn't want his sister getting involved in something that she wouldn't be able to get herself out of.

Dorothy let out a soft scoff rolling her eyes as she walked with her brother.

This is the end of chapter 6. I hope that you enjoyed this next part. I know I added a bit more to the scene because I wanted Howard and Dorothy to interact some and hopefully it came across fairly well. I see some sibling rivalry perhaps sometime soon. But I'm not fully sure about that one. Please leave a review and let me know what you think. There are about 8 chapters left for this part of the story. So there are just a handful left of Captain America The First Avenger. I hope to update you soon. Reviews keep me going. Until next time.
