Kiss me out of the bearded barley
Nightly, beside the green, green grass
Swing, swing, swing the spinning step
You wear those shoes and I will wear that dress

Oh, kiss me beneath the milky twilight
Lead me out on the moonlit floor
Lift your open hand
Strike up the band
And make the fireflies dance
Silver moon's sparkling
So kiss me

"It's amazing out here," Carlos complimented as Jane led him to the field near her house.

Jane grinned and nodded. "Yeah, I've always loved it here. Dad used to take me here. We would play for hours."

She glanced around the field – sometimes it felt like this place was timeless. The barley, the grass, the tree house just at edge of the woods beyond the barely. This is what it always looked like.

As she looked, she noticed the light of a few fireflies blinking in and out of existence as the flew around some of the taller grass.

The warmth of the summer night enveloped her like a soft blanket, but the slight breeze kept it from feeling to stuffy.

"You look beautiful, by the way," Carlos complimented, for the third time that night.

Jane rolled her eyes good naturedly but planted a quick kiss on his cheek in thanks. She was wearing a light-blue spaghetti strap, sundress, with a thin, pink cardigan to keep her warm enough against the breeze. She knew Carlos loved her in this dress. It was a dress that always made her feel good and according to Carlos, it showed and he loved how sure of herself she felt in it.

Carlos looked pretty good himself, with his plain white t-shirt, his red shorts and the shoes that she oddly enough recognised from their first dance together at Ben's coronation, five years ago.

She developed a crush on him that day, but never would've believed that five years later, they'd be in the field where her father took her play and they'd be engaged.

Jane felt Carlos tug on her hand and allowed him to lead her a little further onto the field. As he slowed down, every step they took seemed to cause fireflies to fly up and dance around them.

"How about a dance?" Carlos asked, grinning.

Jane giggled a little as she agreed. Carlos loved to dance and she loved to dance with him. So she let him lead her in a slow dance around the field, as the fireflies did their own dance around them.

His face in the silver moonlight and the spots of golden glow from the fireflies was so beautiful to see and it sent her heart racing.

She leaned closer to him and whispered the only words on her mind in that moment. A demand that he was more than willing to comply to.

"Kiss me."

Kiss me down by the broken tree house
Swing me upon its hanging tire
Bring, bring, bring your flowered hat
We'll take the trail marked on your father's map

Oh, kiss me beneath the milky twilight
Lead me out on the moonlit floor
Lift your open hand
Strike up the band
And make the fireflies dance
Silver moon's sparkling
So kiss me

After dancing for a few minutes, Carlos decided to walk towards the tree house, Jane never letting go of his hand. The tree house itself was a little rundown and probably not safe to be in any more, but there was a tire swing hanging from the sturdy branches of the tree.

"Have you ever swung on a tire swing?" Jane questioned, letting go of his hand and walking over to it.

Carlos shook his head. Jane grinned in response and patted the tire, encouraging him to give it a try. Carlos agreed and after being informed of the several ways one could sit in a tire swing, he decided to put his legs through it and hold on to the upper part of the tire.

Jane grabbed the lower part of the tire and pulled Carlos back as far as she was able to give him a boost. She let go and Carlos soared through the air, holding onto the tire swing as it began to spin slightly so when it got back to Jane he was sideways.

She pushed it as it came to her and this time it went a little further, a little higher. Carlos began to laugh like a delighted child, enjoying every moment of swinging. The slow spin coupled with the back and forth motion gave him such a rush.

It went on like this for a while, Jane pushing him on this tire swing until her arms were getting a bit tired and Carlos claimed he'd had his fill. He grinned as he got off, kissing her cheek as he did so.

"That was amazing. Thank you."

Jane grinned. "I'm glad you had fun." She then sat down on the grass and patted the space besides her to encourage him to join. "So, through those woods there is a little trail. My dad made me a map when I was younger. He told me that the trail was only for the bravest of adventurous and we would have a different adventure every time we went in."

Carlos smiled. "That's really sweet. It's amazing that you remember this stuff."

Jane shrugged. "Barely, to be honest. But that map he made, I memorised it. Copied it out when it started to get worn out with use. Probably did that four or five times. I don't remember what specific adventures we had but he wrote instructions on the side of the map."

From her cardigan pocket, Jane produced a slightly worn piece of paper. "This isn't the original," she admitted. "Mom tucked that away somewhere so it wouldn't be damaged to the point that it was unrecognisable. So this is my handwriting instead of Dad's."

Carlos nodded in understanding. Jane didn't often talk about her father – understandably so as she had been only four when he passed – so Carlos knew that this was important and didn't want to interrupt her.

"There are two instructions on here," Jane said with a laugh. "The first is that we need to treat the trail like an adventure and travel it with bravery. What kind of adventure is up to us and our mood. The second instruction…" Jane trailed off and giggled a bit. "Well, according to my mom, this one was my instruction but my dad agreed with it enough to add it. The second instruction is that we must make flower crowns for our adventure, no matter what kind of adventure."

Carlos chuckled. "That is a very you instruction."

Jane shrugged. "I've always liked flower crowns," she admitted.

Carlos grinned and looked around at the daisies surrounding them. "How about I make yours and you make mine? Then we can go on an adventure. Hide from evil fairies or something."

Jane laughed but agreed. The two of them began making the flower crowns, neither speaking as they concentrated, pretending to take the task incredibly seriously.

Soon, though, the flower crowns were atop their heads and they were following the trail marked on the map Jane's dad had made so long ago. Rather than hiding from evil fairies though, they decided that they were warriors battling through the trees.

Both were laughing so hard from the ridiculousness of their little game that when they emerged back in the meadow (Jane's dad's trail lead them in a semi-circle that took about fifteen minutes to walk), they were gasping for breath.

They linked hands again, walking back through the tall grass, the fireflies danced around them once more.

Jane let out another giggle and a delighted sigh. Carlos looked at her face and couldn't help the large smile that spread across his face as he noticed how content and happy she looked, her eyes fixated on the golden glow of the fireflies that contrasted with the silver sparkle of the moon.

So, he whispered the words that he was thinking in that moment. And it was a request that Jane was more than happy to grant.

"Kiss me."

Kiss me beneath the milky twilight
Lead me out on the moonlit floor
Lift your open hand
Strike up the band
And make the fireflies dance
Silver moon's sparkling
So kiss me

So kiss me
So kiss me
So kiss me
