Into the Metaverse: Chapter 0: Why Now

"Please, you don't have to do this!" shouted a man, glitching as he attempted to crawl away from the prison ground. The police and prisoners all watched in horror as the woman who was pressing the businessman pulled out a red hyperlaser from her pocket, shooting the man, seemingly erasing him from existence. The prisoners and police all scurried away, hiding from the woman, not wanting to experience what happened to that man. The woman pulled out a phone and dialed a number. "The job's over; you can revert the game to its original instance before the glitch brought the guy from Bloxburg or whatever here," she said, holding the phone up to her ear. A loud noise began to shake the world around her as a rift opened up. She looked behind her and saw the people, terrified of her. She put the hyperlaser back in her pocket and placed her mask back on. I went a little overboard. With the blink of an eye, she was back in the rift, and the world returned to its state before the incident. As if nothing happened. As the woman traveled through the rift to her next mission, her phone went off again. Startled, she grabbed the phone as it slipped from her hands over and over again. She answered angrily. "What is it this time, Gerald?" shouted the woman before getting cut off. "No wait, Laura, this is important!" responded Gerald. Laura never really liked Gerald; she thought he was a pretentious prick, but he knew what he was doing, so Laura listened. "Go on..."
"There's a weird glitch going on. I'm detecting more than one person in the rift you're going through."
Now Laura thought that Gerald was speaking crazy. "Gerald, are you sure that something isn't wrong with the software? I mean, it's a private tunnel; there's only one entrance and an exit, and the person couldn't possibly be going to the same location as me!" shouted Laura through the phone. But before she could go on her tangent, a sword went flying towards her right hand, causing her to drop her phone as it drifted away in the rift, cutting any possible connection between her and Gerald. * Swords? What's up with that? Is a game leaking into the tunnel? Laura was finally starting to make sense of the situation. What most likely happened was a memory leak. Rare occurance and usually only happens in games, but can be easily fixed using the Hyperlaser. So, that's what she tried doing. Until more swords started flying towards her, hindering her attempts. Slowly yet surely, Laura noticed that maybe Gerald was right. *Wait, is there actually someone else in here with me?* She kept floating through the tunnel, attempting to find a patch. Yet there are no signs of a memory leak. *Oh no.* A glitching man suddenly glittered through the rift, flying towards her. He was wearing armor and wielding a nearly transparent sword, and he seemed to be confused by the whole situation. "Where am I?!" the man shouted as Laura dodged the man, jumping out of his accidental attack opportunity. "Stay calm! Everything will be just fine if you stay calm."She floated towards the man as the rift grew faster and faster. She grabbed the man and held her hyperlaser to his head. However, when the man saw the gun, he resisted, kicking her back and gripping his sword even tighter. Frustrated, Laura grabbed her knife and prepared for battle. "If you don't want to do this the easy way, I guess you'll just have to die." She rushed towards the man, attempting to slice him, but the attack was blocked by his sword. As Laura tried to cut through the sword, she noticed that the sword was the Windforce, a sword from Universe 487316, nicknamed Sword Fights on the Heights by Gearld. As much as she hated Gerald, she had to admit it wasn't a horrible name. Knowing this, she quickly retracted her knife, instead grabbing her Hyperlaser and sending the sword back to his dimension, something she would've done before but wasn't able to do because she didn't know the dimension of origin. "Nowhere to go now, kid." With no defenses left, she helped her hyperlaser to his head as he struggled and began to charge his return point. However, suddenly, the private tunnel began to close, and their velocity only grew and grew. *Fuck.* thought Laura to herself as both the man and her were sucked out of the tunnel, placed into Universe 185655149, otherwise known as the Town of Bloxburg. They both crashed into a mountainside. Laura, using her knife, dug into the mountain, gracefully sliding down. But the man, however, fell down further and further. *I should probably get him," she thought to herself. She placed her shoes on the wall and kicked herself off the mountain, falling down faster than the man. She grabbed the man and slid down the mountain, dropping him off on the floor. *At least that's over with," she thought to herself. *Time to call Gerald*
Right. Her phone was gone. *Why does this only happen to me!?* Laura thought, taking off her mask and sitting down, attempting to cool down from what happened. After thinking for a while, she had an idea. "Right! The store! If I can go to the store, buy a phone, and create a makeshift transmission device by creating an intentional memory leak, I could create a cross-phone and head back home."Laura thanked herself, thinking about how smart she truly was. In her moment of pride, she was hit with the sudden realization that the man was still there on the floor, passing out after the whole situation. *Still gotta take him back to his dimension though.* Laura grabbed her hyperlaser and placed it on his head, getting a direct DNA scan. With the scan, she held it to his chest, sending a shockwave into him. Something strange happened, however. As the shock pulsated through him, for whatever reason, it wouldn't send him back to his home. Instead, the hyperlaser malfunctioned. She kept trying to shoot and shoot, with more frusturation in every attempt. *Come on, come one!* she thought, not wanting to grab anyone's attention. Suddenly, after her 7th attempt, the device died from overstress. She slowly got up and proceeded to throw the hyperlaser on the ground, stepping on it with full force and dragging it across the ground angrily. "Ugh! Why now?!" She tapped her foot on the ground and crossed her arms, a habit she'd do whenever she was extremely angry to not destroy universes so casually. Then, the man woke up.
