Janet Fraiser recognized the symptoms and did a quick analysis of the specimen provided. And she knew just where Sam picked up the infection. The entire base was alerted to the possible outbreak of flu, especially anyone who had contact with Major Carter.
On the previous Saturday Sam Carter as usual spent her morning with Cassie. Cassie's friend Laurie had spent the night and was waiting for her father to pick her up. Unfortunately he was delayed, but the young girls were delighted.
Sam tried to teach Cassie's friend how to play chess but Scrabble was Laurie's game of choice and all of them could play at once.
When he finally arrived Laurie's dad apologized for the delay but the girls had fun and Sam didn't mind. What he didn't say was that he had taken Laurie's little sister to the pediatrician. She was in the grip of a bad cold which proved to be the flu. Laurie was incubating it and she spread it to Cassie and Sam.
Teal'c returned with supplies from Doctor Frasier complete with instructions. And there was a care package.
"O'Neill, I have pharmaceuticals provided by Doctor Fraiser and a presumptive diagnosis. Doctor Fraiser was most insistent we do not interact with the indigenous people lest we infect them. And supplemental nutrition was provided by Kenny."
"What's the diagnosis and who's Kenny?
"Doctor Fraiser believes Major Carter most likely contracted influenza from Casandra Fraiser and her classmate Laurie."
"Supplemental nutrition?" Daniel was curious.
"There is soup for Major Carter from Kenny."
"Kenny?" O'Neill asked.
"Yes, O'Neill. Kenny from the mess. He also sent an apple cake for Major Carter."
O'Neill looked hopeful.
"He said it was intended for Major Carter."
"What no ice cream?"
"He did attempt to package some but the container proved too cumbersome."
O'Neill had enough competition for the fair Major's attention, now a line cook too.
The med eased some of Sam's symptoms as did the hot soup. It was some of the first real food she consumed in days. And it was definitely restorative.
Finally having a bit of energy Carter joined her team in their slow but steady march to the Stargate. Within a day and a half SG-1 passed through the Stargate to the SGC. As a health precaution there were very few in the gateroom when they came through, only the usual men behind the gun emplacements, Doctor Fraiser, an orderly and one airman.
O'Neill and Teal'c ignored Sam's protests as they lifted her onto a gurney. Doctor Fraiser assured her teammates that she would be well taken care of and had her trundled off to the infirmary. O'Neill handed off his pack and weapons to the airman. He then stormed off to the mess. He was still in battle dress, unwashed and unshaven for ten days.
"Who's Kenny?" he demanded.
Two of the men behind the counter looked anxiously at the third.
"That'd be me." Kenny said.
There was silence in the packed mess hall as a grimy calloused hand shot across the counter. For a split second they wondered if he was going for Kenny's throat.
He shook Kenny's hand and simply said "Thanks".
Kenny just nodded knowing his favorite Major was going to be alright. Kenny was no fool, he was well aware an alpha male just asserted his dominance.
After cleaning up and briefing Hammond, O'Neill parked himself on a chair by Sam Carter's bedside. The next morning he was awakened by the clatter of the arrival of her breakfast tray. He had never had a meal like this when he was stuck in the infirmary. Sam blinked awake at the noise and enticing aroma. There was a heaping plate of french toast with a small pitcher of maple syrup, a bowl full of mixed berries and complete with a carafe of freshly brewed coffee.
Fraiser had worked her magic. Carter looked and sounded so much better. And she actually had an appetite. O'Neill looked at the feast and thought 'Kenny strikes again.'
When Sam saw her breakfast she knew she was being treated specially and had an admirer. It brought a blush to her cheeks.
"Going home today?" He asked her while eyeing her breakfast.
"I hope so. Did anyone else get it?"
"Not yet. I think we dodged that bullet. The doc thinks if we didn't come down with it yet we might be in the clear."
"That's good. I'm glad I didn't spread it." Looking at her breakfast Sam noticed O'Neill eyeing it and said, "This looks delicious but it's way too much. Want to share Sir?"
O'Neill rustled up another plate, fork and coffee cup and helped himself.
It was delicious.
"I'm glad you're feeling better Carter. I'll be by later to drive you home. Make a list and we can send Daniel and Teal'c to the store for essentials and pick up dinner." What Jack thought and didn't want to voice was 'Unless Kenny is going to cater your dinner'.
