My Legacy
Chapter 3
"It's surreal that this is your life, every day," Luna confessed, as she ambled towards the ice cream van with the others. They'd all just been surfing, which by the way, they were absolutely amazing at. Luna had attended, naturally, and had borrowed Harry's surf board and had taken novice lessons with one of the instructors Nick, who was on duty. She'd spent most of her time falling into the water than on the board. She'd decided she was done within the hour, and chose to sit and watch them from the beach.
"Tell me about it, the weather in the UK was a massive wake-up call, who goes on holiday to colder climates?" Josh exclaimed, "And my parents want to go a cruise around Iceland! In the Yule holidays!"
"Greenland is cold, its located in the polar climate zone. Which means that generally the country stays cold all year round." Luna pointed out, "I researched Greenland when we considered going to see the muggle polar bears and penguins and of course, the moon cubs rescue and rehabilitation centre."
"There's one in Greenland?" Jay asked, blinking rapidly, "Wicked! I never heard of that." Turning to the older witch in the van, "A double cone with one vanilla and one chocolate scoop please with a flake in each." Handing over the sickles that would pay for his purchase.
"I'm surprised you've never mentioned that, I mean you used to tell us everything about moon wolf cubs." Dylan teased shoving Harry with a grin. Messing up his hair, which was already beginning to dry now that he was out of the water.
Harry laughed softly, as Josh ordered his own treat, deciding on a tub of strawberry and vanilla scoop with a sprinkle of sprinkles and a dash of raspberry sauce. "I actually didn't know that." And he had done his level best to learn absolutely everything about moon wolf cubs, especially after he learned that Luna was his familiar.
"I'll get it, what do you want?" Harry offered, as Luna stepped up to the van.
"That's okay, I've got…" Luna didn't even get to finish.
"No, it's okay, my treat!" Harry said, "Pick whatever you like."
"You need it though, for your books," Luna pointed out, knowing that Harry was heading to pick up his university books in the coming days.
It surprised nobody when Harry had been accepted to his first choice of university, and everyone in the group had their first or second picks, be it university or desire to gain their mastery in a certain organization.
"I've got more than enough, dad bought me everything I'll need for my classes, including a new computer." Harry answered enthused, it was so fast compared to his older computer, like super-fast. It would allow him to keep up with any classes which was great.
Luna nodded, "Three scoop tub of chocolate with caramel sauce and some marshmallows if they have them and a flake crushed up in it." It had always been one of her favourite combinations, ever since she tried it when she was ill with dragon pox, as mild as it had been when she was a child – already inoculated – so she didn't end up tinged with green spots but had been rather ill. She still remembered it fondly, she and her mother had spent the entire week together, no interruptions by tutors or anything. She'd been allowed to eat whatever she liked.
"Interesting combination, I prefer meringue than marshmallows," Harry commented, other than the caramel sauce it was basically an Eaton Mess. His dad made that dessert maybe four or five times a year and no more. He insisted it was teeth rotten stuff, that shouldn't be eaten too much.
Harry had told him a simple potion would fix his teeth, but it hadn't changed anything. His dad had just smirked but continued to give it only on special occasions, birthdays, Yule, and celebratory dinners.
Luna relaxed when nobody ridiculed her or her choice.
"I'd like double cone with caramel ice cream, two fudge sticks and a coke please." Harry said, handing over his own sickles. If any muggles had approached the van, they'd see normal Eastern Caribbean Dollars, or American Dollars which can be used on the island as well as galleons of course, provided they were magical and knew about it. Not everyone did, especially visitors.
"Hey, Josh, didn't you say Kristy was coming today?" Dylan queried, as they all said gave thanks and goodbyes to the witch, beginning the long walk back towards home.
"She was meant to, but her father wanted to see her, it's his only day off this month before he's gone on another assignment or something." Josh shrugged helplessly; he knew she missed him a lot when he was away. So, he wasn't surprised that she'd elect to have a father/daughter day with him while he could.
"Who's Kristy?" Luna enquired; she'd never heard the boys using that name before. It certainly wasn't of the boys' classmates, or well, she could be she guessed. After all, not all of them had come, and it could be someone else at school below them.
Josh grumbled under his breathe, before explaining, "My girlfriend,"
"His twenty-one-year-old, girlfriend," Harry emphasised her age, Josh had begged them all not to say anything to his parents. That he would tell them himself, and Harry had stupidly agreed. He remained on the fence between keeping Josh's secret and telling his dad. It was a six-year age gap between them, and legally, it wasn't allowed.
"Have you had sex?" Luna bluntly asked, causing the others to burst out in very uncomfortable laughter, and Josh flushed a horrid red colour, that clashed with his current clothes. They all stopped moving, just hanging around the area awkwardly.
"What, no!" his protest was in high notes.
"And they're not trying to encourage it?" Luna seemed unbothered by how severely uncomfortable everyone was. "Trying to get you to do more than you're comfortable?"
"Can you just stop?" Josh asked, refraining from snapping at her, but only barely.
Luna nodded, "Alright, just be careful, my mother's sister, she begun getting secretive, turned out she was dating someone that was twenty-five at fifteen. She was groomed, and distanced herself from the family. Got pregnant at sixteen, died when she was seventeen in childbirth. Mother was always very…straightforward with me when it came to that sort of thing. She didn't want it to happen to me too."
Xeno had disapproved fiercely, but loved Pandora too much to say no. nobody except the parents really had a say in how a child of theirs is raised. Although, people sure tried, with Molly Weasley leading the crusade. Luna without a filter had Molly enraged, and refused to let her daughter associate with the Lovegood's again.
Looking back, Xeno was glad he hadn't made the last few years with his life filled with fights. Instead, he looked back with fondness and love, and a fierce desire to be back with her. Which he couldn't do, no, he would never leave his daughter willingly. His wife would never speak to him again! It would be a long eternity if he attempted that. Speaking to her on all hallows eve would have to be enough.
Josh rolled his eyes, and agreed overly dramatically. The guys immediately began talking again, well, except Harry. He was pensive, his worry had quadrupled with Luna's words. The couple (Josh and Kristy) hadn't been together long, but Harry had sensed a change in his best friend. What if he was doing the wrong thing by keeping quiet?
Sure, people got together, and when they're older that age gap won't mean much. However, he was leery, what could she see in his best friend? He was fifteen, a completely clueless when he was being flirted with. He knew, because the girls at school flirted with him.
"You'll see Kristy tomorrow!" Josh explained, eager for them all to meet her.
"Until something unexpectedly comes up anyway," Dylan whispered conspiratorially to Luna who was next to Harry. Giving them a wink, with a grin on his face.
"Oi!" Josh shoved Dylan who in retaliation flicked ice cream on him, an that started an all-out war between the two. Instead of eating their dessert they ended up wearing it.
A few seconds later, Dylan was vehemently regretting his decision to fling the ice cream. "This is just gross! Sticky and disgusting! You better not have flicked that raspberry sauce at my favourite top!" he warned Josh, trying to pat at his own back futilely.
Jay peered at Dylan's back, "There's a few flecks," but he wasn't worried about Dylan getting on Josh's case, it would likely be just fine after a cleaning spell removed it.
"Ugh, I'm definitely heading home to change," Dylan grumbled, this was the first top he'd ever bought for himself with his own money.
"Don't be stupid, it's just a bit of sauce," Josh rolled his eyes, flinging the remnants into the bin, wiping his hand down his trousers.
"By the way guys, my mum got tickets for the duelling tournament!" Jay exclaimed, it burst out of him, as he remembered to tell them.
"No way! You're kidding!"
"Not the world championship duelling tournament?" Harry asked, eyes wide, "Seriously?" oh, my god he was so jealous.
"No way!"
"I'm serious!" nodding emphatically, "I can't wait!"
"Wait, Filius signed up for this one, didn't he?" Harry asked, he could have sworn he heard his dad and Filius talking about it.
"Oh yeah, everyone is all excited about that by the way, ticket sales tripled! They can't wait to see him in action again…he won how many? Five?"
"Nine times!" Harry proclaimed, "I can't believe he's making an attempt for a tenth time…he is getting on in age."
"Has he stopped teaching?" Dylan asked curiously, moving around a group of five-year-olds shouting and hollering at one another with water balloons and pistols.
"Definitely not, he is or was still my head of house at the end of the summer." Luna joined the conversation. A curious look on her face, "I wonder if daddy would be able to get a few more tickets for all of us to attend." Believe it or not, Xeno had many connections, not everyone found eccentric people weird.
"They're sold out now," Jay explained, "I'm really surprised mom managed to get them."
"Rowena is awesome," Harry exclaimed, he had been asked a million times to call her Rowena before he actually did start.
"How many did your mom get?" Dylan asked in curiosity, absently reapplying his cooling charm wandlessly. Glancing briefly at Luna, but she looked to be taking the weather well. She hadn't complained once, and he knew he had by a million times roughly two hours after landing on Scotland's soil.
"They only had three left, although she wanted to get five or six, mom wanted to come with us but she said to invite you guys." Jay shrugged, "To be honest it feels rotten, since my mom does want to go." He was very close to his mom, which was only natural since she was all he knew.
"The duellers get tickets as well, right?" Harry asked thoughtfully, wondering if he could buy a few off of his dad's friend.
"I don't know," Dylan mused thoughtfully, "Maybe?" perhaps the first pick, that wouldn't surprise him. For their family and friends?
"Huh, I'm going to ask dad to ask Filius," Harry said, rubbing his hands at the thought of actually getting to see the duelling championship games with all his friends. He wouldn't go if he couldn't get one for Luna too though.
"It would be epic if we could all go!" Josh declared gleefully, "Like one last hurrah before we start Uni or working towards our Mastery, right?" the more he thought of it, the more he liked the idea! "I mean I'd even pay for my ticket; I do have some savings put aside." Although he wanted to get Kristy a pendant she really wanted, but that savings wasn't even enough for it.
"I mean it does sound awesome, doesn't it?" Dylan grinned, "One day though, I'll get to attend the Quidditch World cup games." He was determined.
"Agreed!" Harry called out, fist pumping, shouting out the name of his favourite Quidditch team, he had four posters in his room, each one was the yearly team poster for the start of the quidditch season.
Josh's mirror began to beep, the boy positively jumped in jubilation, as he fetched it out. "I'll be right back, I have to take this," with that Josh actually back peddled down the road.
"Tell me I won't be that nauseating when I get a girlfriend," Dylan said, snorting, before they began to move again.
"What, like you aren't that way with Sophie?" Harry teased him, "It's pure luck you get a word out." His face always went bright red, like it was right now.
"She's pretty," Dylan said, liked quidditch, not as much as him of course, and he really liked her.
Harry glanced at Luna, and thought to himself, not as pretty as Luna though. "Do you know what she's planning on doing?" he couldn't recall her ever discussing it and she'd changed her mind like twenty times over the years, regarding what she wanted to do once she left school. Which wasn't exactly odd, every single one of them (except him) had changed their minds a time or two. He'd always been determined to be a vet, there had never really been an alternative to him. Harry had been lucky to figure out his vocation so quickly. Just like his dad.
"Potions Mastery, she's asked professor Wren if he'd take her on, and he accepted." Dylan commented, glancing back to find Josh finished with his mirror call and was jogging towards them.
"She was always brilliant at Potions," Harry conceded.
Dylan snorted, "Please, you were the top of the class always, me, Josh and Sophie interchanged being second third and fourth." They'd all had an advantage of being raised alongside their parents and the youngest potion master at his craft.
"She was still brilliant," Harry pointed out, although it wasn't Sophie's favourite class, it was one of her best ones.
"Whos' brilliant?" Josh asked, re-joining the group with a spring in his step.
"Sophie, did you know she was aiming for a Potions Mastery?" Harry answered and queried.
"Really? Cool…" Josh said, glancing at his watch, "I've got to go, Kristy is meeting me in twenty minutes…talk to you all later, alright?" without even waiting for a reply, Josh was running in the opposite direction of home.
Jay and Dylan just laughed, "So whipped!" they crowed together.
Harry just smiled, watching his friends back as he took off, before turning back, "Come on, lets head back to mine, I want to see if we can get tickets!"
Harry reached out, his little finger reaching out for Luna's, and entwining them. Giving her a shy smile, glad she was here.
"Guess what guys!?" Harry called out through the mirror in the conference call he had with all his friends, Luna next to him in her purple and orange pyjamas. His bedroom door was glaringly wide open.
"What is it?" Jay, Dylan and Josh asked.
"We've got enough tickets for everyone!" Harry crowed in delight, grinning as he watched them all scream in excitement. "So, you guys are all going along with Luna, Tali, Jayden and Ale, my dad and the headmaster. Rowena too, so at least Luna and Tali aren't going to be the only girls."
"This is awesome!" Dylan couldn't contain his excitement, "When's the first match? And where?"
"First one's here coincidentally enough, in Choc, in two days," Harry told them, "Meet at mine? We'll all portkey together?"
"Definitely! Oh, my god! Who's duelling first?" Josh exclaimed, already rummaging in his cupboard for something to wear.
"There's thirteen duels, the first group is…let me see," Harry murmured, opening the booklet, "Chen, Lopez, Johansson, Callen, Mohamad, Abdelaal, McDonald, McKinnon, Doyle, Kelly, Broderick, Garcia, Ericksson and Jankowski that's just the first rounds." The winners of those duels would determine the next matches.
"Oh, this is going to be epic! Ericksson and McKinnon? Damn, I bet they're going to go through to the next round, easy." Josh declared. It would be easy money if they were in the habit of betting money.
"I don't know, I mean the Irish girl, Kelly, she was amazing last year, she only got beat because her shield splintered letting in that bone breaking spell that completely shattered her ankles." Jay mused, "Two galleon's Kelly and Lopez make it through." Girls were deadly when duelling.
"You're on!" Josh declared grinning, finding the outfit he wanted, he grinned and set it aside. He plonked onto his bed once more, setting the mirror on his pillow so it was propped up.
"I'd put my money on Callen and Flitwick," Luna said, "I know he's not on the list for the first day, but that's my vote." A twinkle in her eye, she knew both of them so she felt a sense of loyalty to vote for them and hope they win.
'Mirror off, get to sleep,' came Josh's father's voice firm but amused. 'good evening boys' was added, he knew without needing to look who his son was conversing.
"Good night," they all chimed in.
"Night guys, meet up tomorrow morning?" Josh suggested.
"Sure, yours?" Harry asked.
"Nine o'clock," Josh agreed, before the mirror went reflective showing on his own reflection.
"Night Harry, night Luna, thank your dad for me, yeah?" Dylan said, still grinning wide enough to hurt his cheeks.
"I will, see you tomorrow!" Harry said, giving a wave before deactivating the mirror. "So, anything in particular you want to do?" as he petted Luna behind the ears, his wolf had stuck to him like glue after he left her at home this afternoon. The older she got, the more she tended to stay indoors, instead of being outside with the rest of the pack.
"Daddy will be calling soon," Luna said, "Thank you, I had a lot of fun today." Thank goodness for potions though, otherwise she'd look like a tomato. She had such fair skin, so it was hardly surprising. However, the salve that Mr. Regis had given her helped immensely.
"You're welcome, is there anything you'd like to do? How about we visit the Zoo?" he suggested knowing her immense love of animals. He'd had to drag her back into the house for breakfast, lunch and dinner when she'd rather just watch the moon cubs (although they were most definitely not cubs anymore).
A/n – yeah it's difficult to write chapters for this story, I'm literally making it up without a muse to help, which believe me does affect your ability to write the story. It's the difference between swimming in water and swimming in treacle or tar if you will. Having the muse and excitement to write has the story running smoothly, so for stories like this my touch typing doesn't help lol I'll get there though even if it takes me an extra day which I hope doesn't happen too often R&R please
