Chapter 4: The Return
The morning sunlight streamed into the Halliwell household, bathing the kitchen in a warm, golden glow. Prue, Piper, Phoebe, and Leo had gathered around the wooden table, their expressions a mixture of curiosity and skepticism. At the head of the table sat a man whose presence commanded attention, Nick Fury, the enigmatic director of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Fury leaned forward, his single eye focused intently on the faces before him. He began to speak, and the words that left his lips carried a depth of knowledge that left the Charmed Ones and Leo astounded.
"The demon you're dealing with," Fury began, his voice measured, "is not your run-of-the-mill threat. It's a Shadow Claw, a malevolent entity that thrives on fear, darkness, and despair. It's a creature of the supernatural, and it's elusive, rarely seen, but very, very dangerous."
The sisters exchanged surprised glances, their wariness of S.H.I.E.L.D. momentarily overshadowed by their astonishment. How could a mortal like Fury possess such intimate knowledge of the supernatural world?
Prue, the pragmatic and protective older sister, was the first to voice her curiosity. "How do you know about Shadow Claws? It's not common knowledge, even among those who deal with the supernatural."
Fury's lips curled into a half-smile. "Let's just say I have connections and sources that keep me informed about things most people would never believe. My organization specializes in handling the extraordinary and the unexplainable."
Piper, known for her quick wit and sarcasm, couldn't help herself. "And here we thought you were just an eyepatch-wearing, secret-agent type."
Fury's eye remained impassive as he replied, "Nice to have fans, ladies, but we've got a serious situation on our hands. One that SHIELD and the 'Charmed Ones' can't afford to ignore."
Phoebe's curiosity got the better of her, and she asked, "So, you're here to tell us how to vanquish this demon and save the day?"
Fury's demeanor turned more serious as he answered, "Not exactly. I'm here because we share a common goal, and I believe we need to work together to confront this threat. You see, this demon isn't just a problem for you; it's a problem for everyone. Including SHIELD."
The mention of SHIELD drew a collective, cautious glance from the Charmed Ones. The memory of their recent encounter with Agent Coulson, and their firm rejection of any involvement with the organization, weighed heavily on their minds.
Prue leaned forward, her eyes locked with Fury's. "You're asking for our help now? Even after we turned down Agent Coulson's offer last night?"
Fury nodded, understanding the hesitation in their eyes. "I respect your choice, and I understand your concerns about SHIELD. But this demon isn't something we can ignore. It threatens not only innocent lives but also the balance of the supernatural world. We need to stop it before it becomes an even greater menace."
Showing her practical and protective side, Piper spoke up towards Fury, her eyes locking onto the Director of SHIELD.
"And if we don't help you?"
Fury's tone grew grimmer. "If we fail to contain this demon, it could attract the attention of someone with powers we can't control. I don't want to involve a 'Heavy Hitter' unless it's absolutely necessary. Their powers could lead to significant collateral damage."
"But we can't forget the secrets and hidden agendas within SHIELD," Phoebe noted to the Director. "I can still see Coulson being experimented on."
"We've had our fair share of unpleasant encounters with authorities before, and I feel we could be deceived again." Piper retorted, adding further clarity to her sister's hesitations to work with Fury and his organization.
Fury acknowledged their concerns with a solemn nod. "I won't deny that there are aspects of SHIELD that I'm not proud of. But right now, we have a shared problem, and we need to focus on stopping this demon."
Leo, who had been quietly observing the conversation, decided to speak. "So, what's the plan, Mr. Fury? How can we work together to deal with this threat?"
Fury leaned back in his chair, his good eye never leaving the faces before him. "First, we exchange information. What do you know about this demon, and what can you share with me? In return, I'll provide you with all the information SHIELD has gathered so far."
The atmosphere in the room was tense, and the Charmed Ones exchanged meaningful glances. They hadn't anticipated working with SHIELD, but the gravity of the situation had brought them to a crossroads.
Prue finally broke the silence, "Okay, Fury, let's exchange information and figure out how we can deal with this. But don't think this changes our stance on SHIELD. We're still not signing up for your organization."
Fury's eye met hers with unwavering resolve. "Agreed. Let's put our differences aside for now and focus on stopping this threat."
With a shared agreement to put their differences aside for the time being, Fury and the Charmed Ones began to exchange information, laying the groundwork for their collaborative effort to stop the Shadow Claw and protect innocent lives. The uneasy alliance between SHIELD and the Charmed Ones had been set in motion, and the mission was about to begin.
SFPD
Meanwhile downtown, Inspector Darryl Morris sat in his cluttered office, poring over case files and attempting to piece together the chilling incident that had unfolded that morning in the Financial District. As he reviewed the details of the gruesome homicide, he couldn't help but think back to his late friend and former partner, Andy Trudeau.
Andy had always trusted Piper and her sisters, often seeking their help with supernatural cases that fell outside the scope of standard police work. He had believed in their abilities and their commitment to protecting the innocent. And now, as Darryl found himself entangled in another inexplicable and sinister case, he couldn't help but wonder if the sisters might hold the key to unraveling the mystery.
Across the bustling police precinct, a watchful officer sat at another desk, discreetly observing Darryl's efforts. With a sense of purpose, the officer gathered their belongings and prepared to leave the precinct. As they exited the building, they reached for their phone, ready to make an important and confidential call.
HALLIWELL HOUSEHOLD - ATTIC
Nick Fury followed the Charmed Ones and Leo up the narrow attic stairs. As he stepped into the attic, his eye took in the ancient, mystical surroundings with a mixture of curiosity and slight bemusement. The attic was lined with old, weathered books, shelves filled with vials and potions, and ornate symbols etched into the wooden floor. It was like walking into another world.
Fury couldn't help but raise an eyebrow.
"Well, this is a far cry from the usual briefing room," he remarked dryly.
"Welcome to the attic," smiled Prue. "This is where we keep the Book of Shadows."
Fury's eye flicked toward the imposing, ancient tome resting on an ornate wooden stand. It was bound in aged leather and featured an intricate, embossed design that hinted at the mystical power contained within.
"The Book of Shadows?" Fury echoed. "Impressive."
"It's like our supernatural encyclopedia," Piper chimned in." "All the spells, potions, and knowledge we need to deal with the supernatural."
"It's been in our family for generations, passed down through the Halliwell line. Leo, as our Whitelighter, helps us decipher and understand it." Phoebe explained looking towards Fury, explaining the background of the book.
Fury's gaze shifted to Leo, who offered a nod of acknowledgment.
"That's correct, director," Confirmed Leo. "The Book of Shadows is an invaluable resource, containing centuries of magical wisdom."
Fury couldn't deny the significance of the book and the knowledge it held. It was clear that he was out of his element, and it intrigued him.
"Everyday is a school day." Fury joked, his good eye locked onto the book.
The oldest sister began carefully flipped through the ancient pages of the Book of Shadows, searching for any information that might shed light on the enigmatic Shadow Claw. Her fingers traced the text, seeking knowledge to help them in their impending battle.
Whilst Prue checked through the book, Phoebe's curiosity bubbled over as she leaned in, her eyes locked on Fury. She had always been fascinated by heroes, and Captain America was a legendary figure she had admired from afar.
"Hey, Fury," she began, "What's Captain America like? I've always been a huge fan of Steve Rogers."
Fury, usually a stern and no-nonsense figure, softened for a moment.
"Captain Rogers," Fury began, "is a man of unwavering principles. He's the embodiment of selflessness, honor, and courage. Steve Rogers is the kind of person who would stand up for what's right, no matter the odds or the consequences. He's a living example of the best humanity has to offer."
Phoebe listened with rapt attention, her eyes shining with admiration. It was clear that Captain America was more than just a superhero to her; he represented the very ideals she held dear.
"That is so cool, could I get an autograph perhaps?" Phoebe asked with mischief in her voice.
"We shall see, Miss Halliwell." Smirked Fury playfully. "Let's deal with this Shadow Claw bastard first."
Leo and Piper joined in, their interest equally piqued.
"What about the other heroes? Leo remarked, "They seem like an interesting bunch."
"Stark, Thor, Banner, Romanoff—what are they like?" Piper enquired, wanting to know further.
Fury's good eye regarded the sisters and the Whitelighter, and a faint smile tugged at the corner of his lips.
"You're certainly fans of the Avengers, I see. But no love for Clint Barton?"
Phoebe blinked, her enthusiasm momentarily waning.
"Clint Barton? Who's that?"
Prue, still focused on her search, chimed in without looking up from the Book of Shadows.
"Poor Hawkeye." Prue smirked looking over to the group.
Phoebe turned to Fury for an explanation.
"Oh, the Arrow guy?" Asked Phoebe hesitantly.
Fury chuckled softly, nodding. "Clint Barton, also known as Hawkeye, is a highly skilled archer and marksman. He's a good man, a valued member of the Avengers and SHIELD. Just as capable and honorable as the rest of the team."
Phoebe nodded, taking in the new information. It seemed there was much more to the world of superheroes than she had initially thought. As the conversation delved into the personal sides of these heroes, she couldn't help but be drawn into the stories of their valor and integrity, each one offering a unique source of inspiration.
"Found it!" Prue exclaimed to the group, finally finding the page.
"Great job, Prue. What does it say?" Asked Piper.
"The Shadow Claw," Prue began. "From what I am reading and what we've dealt with before, this demon is particularly elusive and dangerous. Its abilities are rooted in fear and darkness, making it a formidable adversary."
Fury listened intently. He may have been a seasoned operative, but the supernatural world was a different playing field entirely.
Piper looking at the page took a deep breath, preparing to share more information to her sisters, Leo and Fury.
"The Shadow Claw's primary weakness is light. It thrives in darkness and can only be truly vanquished by exposing it to intense light. That's when it's vulnerable."
Leo added, "But it's not that simple. It has the ability to manipulate shadows, making it difficult to trap. "I've heard others facing it before, and it managed to escape every time."
Fury raised an eyebrow at their descriptions. The Shadow Claw sounds like a formidable adversary, even by his standards.
"So, what's the plan?" he asked, his tone serious.
Prue's expression grew resolute. "We're going to use the knowledge we have on the Shadow Claw from the book and combine it with your tactical expertise. If we're going to confront it, we need a plan that plays to our strengths."
Fury nodded in agreement. He was no stranger to facing dangerous threats, and it was clear that the Charmed Ones were equally formidable in their own right.
As the discussion about the Shadow Claw continued in the attic, Nick Fury's cell phone suddenly buzzed with urgency. He glanced at the caller ID, and upon seeing the name, he needed to excuse himself from the group.
"Excuse me, Ladies & guardian. SHIELD Business." Fury advised.
"Sure, take the call downstairs if you need." Prue remarked politely, still looking deeper into the Book of shadows.
With a polite nod, Fury excused himself and answered the call. He stepped away from the others, knowing it was imperative.
With the attic door closed behind him, Fury made his way downstairs. As he answered the call, he offered his typical no-nonsense greeting.
"Fury."
Back in the attic, the sisters and Leo were still coming to terms that Nick Fury was in the house and they were now working with SHIELD, an organization they had no interest in joining forces with.
"For a Director…He doesn't seem that bad." Piper exclaimed, looking to her sisters and Leo.
"He seems ok, but I'm sure he has secrets upon secrets." Leo remarked, slightly weary of the Director.
Prue nodded, her skepticism still lingering.
"Maybe, but we can't forget the secrets and distrust within the organization."
Phoebe offered a more balanced perspective. "Well, one thing's for sure, we have to deal with the Shadow Claw first. Once that's done, we can decide how we want to move forward."
***DOWNSTAIRS***
Nick Fury stepped away from the attic's mystical ambiance into the more mundane setting of the Halliwell household's living room, The voice on the other end was that of Maria Hill, his right-hand woman at S.H.I.E.L.D. She wasted no time getting to the point
"We've got some intel from our mole. He managed to dig up some information on the recent supernatural activity in San Francisco."
"What's the word?" Fury asked, his tone indicating the seriousness of the situation.
"It seems that Inspector Morris from the SFPD is already on the way to the Halliwells," Hill explained, her voice measured. "He's onto the fact that they might be connected to the recent supernatural occurrences. If he sees you there, it's going to complicate things."
Fury sighed. Morris was a good cop, and he knew the man's instincts were sharp. But, bringing the SFPD into this supernatural incident could lead to more headaches than solutions. Especially if SHIELD were sniffing around, which causes more explanations, problems and paperwork.
"We don't need the local PD tangled up in this mess," Spoke Fury with haste. "I'm onto something here, and I need some time to sort it out without drawing unnecessary attention."
Hill nodded, though Fury couldn't see it.
"I'll see what I can do to stall Morris. Buy yourself some time, Nick."
As Fury was about to share more details with Hill, a sudden commotion erupted upstairs. Shouts, the sound of magical energy, and the distinct hum of an attempted vanquishing spell filled the air. Fury's eye widened, and he gripped the phone tighter.
"Hill, I gotta go. Things just went south upstairs. I'll update you when I can."
"Be careful, Fury," Hill warned before ending the call.
Fury pocketed his phone and rushed back toward the attic, his mind racing with thoughts of demons, Shadow Claws, and the unexpected twists that seemed to follow the Charmed Ones. As he ascended the stairs, he braced himself for whatever supernatural chaos awaited him. The investigation just got a whole lot more complicated.
THE ATTIC
Fury's heart raced as he reached the top of the stairs, only to witness Leo being hurled through the attic door and tumbling down the steps. He sidestepped the falling Whitelighter, narrowly avoiding a collision. Leo landed at the bottom of the stairs with an almighty thud. He was dazed, but at least he was moving.
"Leo, you alright? Fury shouted down to the whitelighter, who was in a heap from the fall.
"I've been better, just go help them." Ordered Leo, tasking the SHIELD Director, whilst in agony. Even as a Whitelighter or guardian to the sisters, Leo could still feel and experience pain.
Fury, now on high alert, swiftly withdrew his gun, the metallic gleam catching the dim light of the attic.
As he cautiously approached the shattered doorway, the chaotic scene unfolded before him. The Charmed Ones were locked in a struggle with the Shadow Claw, a sinister entity that seemed impervious to their usual magical defenses. Phoebe lay dazed on the floor, Prue and Piper desperately attempting to use their powers against the relentless foe.
Fury's sharp eyes analyzed the situation. Something was amiss. The usual precision and coordination of the sisters' powers seemed disrupted, as if the Shadow Claw had found a way to counteract their abilities.
Without hesitation, Fury aimed his gun at the creature, ready to fire. His mind raced, calculating the best course of action. The sisters, caught off guard by the sudden intrusion, momentarily shifted their attention from the Shadow Claw to the armed man in their midst.
"Fury, get down!" Prue shouted, her telekinetic powers flinging objects at the demon.
Fury hit the floor, narrowly avoiding a barrage of flying debris. He rolled to a crouched position, maintaining focus on the Shadow Claw. The creature, seemingly unfazed by the magical onslaught, retaliated with renewed ferocity.
"Our powers aren't working! Leo, we need your help!" Shouted Piper in panic.
Leo, recovering from his fall, staggered to his feet. His attempt to orb to the sisters was met with an unseen force, preventing him from reaching them.
"Damn, I can't orb." Leo shouted back, annoyed at this growing problem.
"Say what?" Fury barked back.
"The Shadow Claw, its dark power, is not allowing me to use my own powers." Replied Leo from the bottom of the stairs, still trying to orb.
"Then use the stairs, like a normal person." Fury remarked, aiming his gun towards the Shadow Claw. "Why would you teleport when we are literally meters away?"
"That actually makes sense.." Piper said with a hint of irony in her voice. Even in a life or death situation, Piper always seemed to throw a quip or two to feel less stressed.
Fury, recognizing the urgency, took decisive action. He fired several shots at the creature, each round hitting its mark. The Shadow Claw recoiled, momentarily distracted from its assault on the sisters.
"Bullets, really?" Piper asked with confusion, "what are bullets going to do?
"Prue, Piper, get Phoebe out of here," Fury barked, his voice cutting through the chaos.
"On it," Prue responded with haste and agreeing with Fury's instructions.
The sisters, realizing the dire situation, scrambled to Phoebe's side. Prue shot Fury a wary look, still unsure of the man with the gun, but the urgency of the moment overrode any reservations.
Fury, maintaining his focus on the wounded Shadow Claw, shouted over the commotion.
"I'll keep it distracted. Find a way to get your powers back online!"
As the sisters hurriedly retreated with the injured Phoebe, Fury continued to engage the supernatural threat. The attic became a battleground of magic and firepower, a clash between the arcane and the tactical.
With every shot and evasive maneuver, Fury aimed to buy the Charmed Ones the time they needed to regroup and unleash their full magical arsenal. However, The Shadow Demon was immune to these mortal weapons and showed that Fury was heavily outgunned here.
"Bullets won't save you, mortal," The demon taunted, its voice dripping with malevolence.
"Damn." Fury muttered, knowing this supernatural threat was right.
The Shadow Claw's sinister laughter echoed through the attic, dismissing Fury's attempts with bullets as inconsequential.
"Well, that's just Plan A." Fury remarked with a hint of brashness, knowing he had a back up plan if this one failed. Fury was a man of so many secrets and plans, he always wanted to be at least a step or two ahead of his foes.
"Plan A, mortal? Please do tell, before I rip you limb from limb." Growled the Shadow Claw. The demon was losing patience but like a game of cat and mouse, he was willing to toy with his prey before going in for the killing blow.
"Let me introduce you to Plan B." Said Fury with confidence.
With a swift motion, he reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, seemingly outdated device – a beeper.
The demon scoffed, a cruel smirk on its shadowy face.
"A relic from the past? How will that save you from your demise, mortal?"
Fury, with his signature cool demeanor, responded with a taunt of his own.
"Guess you're about to find out."
Fury pressed the button on the beeper, and suddenly, the small device lit up and emitted a distinct beeping sound.
The demon, perplexed, glared at the glowing pager. All of a sudden, a red and blue light, accompanied by a golden star emblem, appeared on the screen.
"What is this trickery?" The demon demanded.
Fury smirked. "Told you – Plan B."
Without warning, a surge of energy burst through the attic window, smashing into the Shadow Claw with formidable force. The demon roared in agony as the powerful light overwhelmed it, sending it hurtling backward and down the stairs. Piper, Prue, battered Leo and a half out of it Phoebe had been watching the spectacle from a safe distance, observing with a mix of awe and relief.
"What the hell is going on?" Piper remarked in surprise.
"You see the power of that light? Prue added in awe?" "Another Whitelighter, Leo?"
Leo shook his head and looked at the sisters.
"Not one I know, that's for sure."
"Whatever it is, it's caused some damage." Piper remarked. "I hope we paid our home insurance this month? I don't think supernatural damages are covered in our plan."
As the demon lay in a heap at the bottom of the stairs, it looked up to see a figure standing in the unkempt attic due to the chaos. Standing there was a blonde haired woman in a blue and red battle suit, adorned with a golden emblem on her chest. The demon, now in a state of shock, trembled and stuttered seeing this powerful being moving over to the top of the stairs.
"The Annihilator." The demon whimpered in fear.
The woman, glowing with what seemed to be cosmic energy, crossed her arms and gave a small smile.
"Haven't heard that nickname in a while." The women retorted, with brash cockiness.
The demon, overcome with fear, vanished into the shadows, retreating from the powerful presence before it.
"Coward." Added the cosmic being, with a small smirk on her face watching the demon flee in retreat.
Across the hall, the Charmed Ones and Leo, still reeling from the encounter, watched the cosmic-powered hero with a mix of confusion and amazement. Phoebe, still dazed from the earlier assault, saw the figure and wanted to know who or what it was.
"Fury, what is this?" Muttered Phoebe, trying to shake off the cobwebs.
Fury, with a satisfied grin, gestured towards the cosmic warrior.
"Introducing Plan B... Captain Carol Danvers, or as we like to call her – Captain Marvel."
The sisters exchanged glances, trying to process the sudden appearance of a superhero in their attic. Leo, now recovered, nodded in acknowledgment.
"I've heard of her. She's... powerful." Leo remarked in amazement and gratitude.
Captain Marvel, her cosmic energy still flickering around her, approached the group with a confident stride.
"Nick here called for a little backup. Seems you've got a situation on your hands."
"Backup from where?" Questioned Piper skeptically.
Fury, relishing the moment, responded with his trademark cryptic tone, pointing to the ceiling.
"From the stars."
"I wasn't too far away and was able to rush to Earth in no time." Admitted Carol, trying to explain her whereabouts.
"You travel across space?" Phoebe asked.
Carol nodded and gave a small smile.
"Sure do, been doing this for a while now." Responded Carol.
"Now, that's a cool power." Prue admitted, with a playful remark towards the Captain.
Captain Marvel smirked, her eyes scanning the wreckage of the attic.
"Nice place you got here. Need a hand cleaning up?"
"We appreciate the help, but we've got it covered. We're used to dealing with supernatural messes." Piper remarked, grateful for the offer, but she knew a certain whitelighter who could take care of this mess.
"Me… right?" Leo remarked with a sigh. "I deal with your messes."
"Bet your ass it's you. You're a handyman for a reason right?" Piper joked, looking deep into the Whitelighters eyes.
"Supernatural, huh?" Captain Marvel interrupted with a wry smile. "Well, looks like I've stumbled into the mystical side of Earth."
Prue smiled at their new ally, she knew that Carol was in for a wild ride teaming with her and her sisters. Looking at the group, Piper's practical nature came into play.
"Perhaps we better head downstairs," suggested Prue. "We can explain everything further to Carol, and let Leo clean up this mess."
Leo, still recovering from being thrown through a door, sighed. Still needing to recover from being thrown around like a rag doll by that demon.
"Okay, ten-minute break, then fix the mess." Piper responded playfully, with a little smile on her face.
"Thanks boss." Chuckled Leo sarcastically.
Fury, observing the banter, looked at Carol.
"Welcome back to Earth, Captain." Spoke Fury with respect to his friend, happy to see her after all these years.
The cosmic-powered hero acknowledged him with a nod, ready to face whatever challenges the mystical realm had to offer.
ELSEWHERE
In a dimly lit alleyway, far from the Halliwell Manor, the Shadow Demon reappeared, still trembling in fear from the encounter with the cosmic powerhouse known as the Annihilator—Captain Marvel. The experience had left the demon shaken, questioning how such a powerful being could be taken down by a mere mortal.
A mysterious voice echoed around the Shadow Demon, its presence shrouded in shadows.
"Explain yourself. How could you, a formidable demon, be defeated by that woman?"
The Shadow Demon, its ethereal form quivering, spoke with a mixture of awe and fear
"She's the Annihilator," The demon explained, rushing his words, trying to keep his adrenaline spike in check. "She's a legendary force that strikes fear into the hearts of many."
The voice scoffed, dismissing the demon's fear.
"A legend, huh? Grow a pair. We can't afford to have these witches interfering with our plans. The Annihilator or not, we need them gone."
"I... I'll find a way. I'll deal with the Charmed Ones, but I need more power." Stammered the creature, trying to calm his nerves.
"Very well. But not time to waste." The voice echoed with sinister intentions.
The disembodied voices seemed satisfied with this pledge, pushing the demon to eliminate the newfound threat.
From the darkened confines of the alley, the Shadow Demon's attention was drawn to a figure approaching. An evil grin stretched across the demon's ethereal face as it beheld someone of unmistakable interest.
"Feast, my friend. Build your strength." Urged the eerier voice.
The Shadow Demon, still reveling in the echoes of its recent defeat, responded with a sinister undertone.
"You have no idea how much I hunger."
With a malevolent chuckle, the demon turned its focus to the unsuspecting target, contemplating how to consume their essence to grow in power and fulfill its newfound purpose. The alleyway, now charged with dark energy, became the staging ground for the Shadow Demon's ominous plans, setting the wheels of a malevolent scheme into motion.
