It was November now and it was very chilly out. It was morning, Matt and Sylvie were getting ready to head to the firehouse when Matt looked over at Sylvie noticing she was staring at him as he was getting ready.

"Sylvie?"

She came out of whatever supper she was in and said

"What?"

She looks up to his face and feels a blush coming on like she had been caught staring at him. He raises a brow at her.

"You were staring at me. Did you forget we're getting ready to go to work?"

"Erm no. It's…"

She groans and says

"You're distracting me from getting ready."

He looks at her confused

"How? I'm not doing anything."

She looks back at him sheepishly and says, "It's your biceps."

It was safe to say for the first time ever, they were both late for work. I mean they both missed the morning briefing.

When they finally walk in, they go their separate ways and Stella is the first one to spot the Captain.

"Nice shade of lipstick Captain."

Matt groans and wipes it off as Stella smirks knowing why he and Sylvie were late.

By the time they get their 5th call, it was raining out making it colder than it was and making the roads slippery.

"Truck 81, Engine 51, Squad 3, Ambo 61, Battalion Chief 25, we've got a multiple-car accident on Lake Shore Drive. Need immediate assistance,"

They all jump up and race to their rigs, putting on their gear and loading up. They sped through the city's streets, sirens wailing, as they approached the accident scene.

Hours passed as they worked tirelessly to extricate victims from mangled cars and provide medical assistance. Finally, they were able to clear the scene and head back to the firehouse.

When they reached the firehouse, they were exhausted from having a lot more calls than what they are used to. They got cleaned up, ate a late night dinner, and ended up in the bunk room crashing for the night.

It's 2 weeks before Thanksgiving and everyone was at the firehouse planning on who was cooking what. Matt was in his office filling out paperwork when Kylie knocked on his door and he waved her in.

He looks up from the paperwork and says,

"Yes?"

"There's some lady out on the apron looking for you. I told her I would send you out."

"Who is it?"

"I don't know. I've never seen her around here before."

Matt nods

"Thanks Kylie."

They both leave his office and Kylie goes off in a different direction than him. Matt makes his way through the bunk room and out the double doors.

He walks out onto the apron and suddenly he sees a woman facing away from him. He walks closer to her and before he could speak, the woman turns around which leaves him in shock.

"Mom?"

It was indeed Nancy Casey. Matt's mother. No one has heard from or seen her since she packed up and ran off with Cheyenne 11 years ago.

Time had not been kind to Nancy. Her once-vibrant hair was now streaked with gray, and her face bore the lines of a life lived hard.

"Hello Matt."

Meanwhile Sylvie had walked by the window where you could see out into the apron and she had asked Hermann and Kelly who Matt was talking to.

"Oh man.."

"It's his mother. He hasn't seen her in 11 years."

Sylvie knows what happened during his adman's days. It was a rule in the house where no one talked about Matt's family.

All 3 of them look out the window as they watch Matt talk to his mother.

"What are you doing here?"

Nancy looks at her son, who she hasn't seen in 11 years.

"What? Can't a mother come and say hello to her son."

"You got up and left 11 years ago. You told me and Christie to be there for each other and we have."

Nancy lowered her head and explained to Matt that she needed a fresh start. Then she looked around searching for someone.

"Is that Gabby still around?"

Matt looked around and noticed Sylvie in the tower window. He rubbed his neck nervously.

"No. We did get together sometime after you left but didn't work out. I've fallen for someone else."

"Oh and does she work here too?"

"Yes."

Matt then waves for Sylvie to come out. Sylvie walks out and over to Matt.

"Mom, this is Sylvie. She's the paramedic in charge."

Nancy thought her eyes were playing tricks on her and she sees that Sylvie is pregnant.

"I know what you're thinking mom but yes I am the father."

"I wasn't thinking.."

"I know you but you don't know me. I've changed into a better man because of her."

They both have a flashback to when Matt has told her people changed because she helped lift them up. They both smile at each other and they both have that trinkle in their eyes.

Nancy looked down and said, "Yes you are right. I don't know you but I would like to start over."

When she lifted her head back up, she saw the way her son and Sylvie were looking at each other.

She thinks for a bit and she has never seen her son look at any women like that.

"You two love each other?"

They both nod and say "yes we do."

Sylvie also adds, "I love your son. I came in at a difficult time but when me and your son met, I had a feeling.."

Matt looks at her, surprised.

"Wait, you did?"

Sylvie nods slightly and blushes a little, "yes I did. That's why I pulled my hand away quickly. You know in those movies where the girl and the guy meet for the first time and they shake hands and they get that feeling in their hands?"

Matt nods slightly "Yeah."

Sylvie smiles and says "That's how I felt. When I learned you were with Gabby, I just forgot about it."

Matt smiles and says "well we're meant to be."

She nods and says "like I told you, it's always been you."

Nancy saw them two share a kiss and then Matt looked at her.

"I can't forget what you did but like I said in court, time for forgiveness. If I'm going to allow you back into my life then we'll do this slowly."

"I can do that."

Over the next 2 weeks, Matt allows his mom to spend time with him and to get to know Sylvie.

Matt tells her what she had missed after she left. He also tells her when he had gotten the head injury and Sylvie had basically gotten him to go get it checked out.

Nancy watched how her son and Sylvie interacted and saw that they validated each other. She realized he wasn't that 14 year old boy anymore and that he was a grown man living his own life.

Before they knew it, it was Thanksgiving. Over the past few Thanksgivings, they would only get to sit down and start eating but the bells would always go off before they could eat the delicious meal.

Griffin and Ben were finally on holiday break from college. They decided to go visit their mom first in Portland and then they came over to Sylvie's.

Since Sylvie couldn't travel not wanting to risk her going into labor before her due date which was days away, Sylvie's adoptive parents and her adoptive brother decided to come to Chicago.

Matt had woken up to smelling something good. He padded out of the bedroom and found not only Sylvie and her mom but Griffin helping them cook.

"Wow.." He said in amazement seeing every dish you could think of on the counter.

Sylvie looks over at him and says, "hey baby. There's nothing like a Brett family Thanksgiving meal."

She walks over to him and kisses him softly, getting flour on his cheek.

"Isn't that right mom?"

Karen smiles and pulls out a dish from the oven, setting it on the cooling rack.

"Right. We go all out on the holidays."

There's a knock on the door and Sylvie starts to move but Matt tells her to sit down.

"You've done enough. I'll get it."

Sylvie goes to sit down and Matt goes to answer the door.

It was Richard and Sylvie's adoptive brother, Aaron.

"Hey guys. Come on in."

Once everyone was there including Nancy and the food was done, they got their plates filled and of course Matt got Sylvie's. They dug in, sharing stories and asking them what name they picked out.

"We'll tell everyone after she's here.."

Matt looked around wondering how he got so lucky to have found someone as amazing as Sylvie.

They say that some things happen for a reason and that reason will be revealed soon.

Next up: Baby time, Christmas/New Years Eve, and maybe a proposal ;-)
