Cairnholm, 1940. A cloudless sky was brightened by a cheerful looking sun, which beamed down on Miss Peregrine's house. Enoch and Hugh were playing in the field of flowers in the backyard. Enoch with his action figures and Hugh with his bees. They were observing Hugh's bees carrying Enoch's figurines up to a tree. Enoch liked how fun Hugh made the scene look like. And to express his feelings, he gave a big round of applause, accidentally smashing one of Hugh's bees in the process which he didn't notice.

"I find that rather impressive," Enoch said, looking at Hugh.

Hugh, who had been staring at his bees, looked back at Enoch. "It sure is. In fact, it was actually quite fun having all of them carry your toys like that. It's like they're little ants."

"If those bees are your ants, then you must be their queen…" Enoch stopped for a moment to think. "...or king. Can male ants become kings?" he asked himself.

While Enoch was pondering whether or not king ants were a thing, Hugh looked over at his palm. A squashed bee lay on Enoch's palm, covering it with bits of bee blood. Hugh had originally felt marveled by Enoch's ant comment, but now he felt like ripping his head off.

"Hugh?" Enoch noticed Hugh's blank eyes glaring at his hand. He took a glance at his palm, realized what he did, and felt a mix of guilt and fear churn in his stomach. He jerked his head to Hugh and apologized profusely, stammering on a few words. Hugh apparently paid no notice, continuing to stare blankly at Enoch with malevolent eyes.

"Kill my bees, will you?" He was slowly approaching Enoch, him backing away.

"I'm really sorry, Hugh. Please don't hurt me."

Hugh made a grab at Enoch, and he circled around Hugh, running to Miss Peregrine's house. "You little brat, you!"

Enoch ran into Miss Peregrine's house through the front door. He was stopped by Millard, who finally decided to wear clothes. "Er…what seems to be the matt—"

"Don't tell Hugh where I am. I'll be hiding somewhere." Enoch ran into one of the rooms that was by Millard, leaving him standing in confusion.

"Okay…?" he muttered. Millard turned to face the front door. Hugh was running at him, fuming. Millard half-expected smoke to come out of his ears.

He grabbed Millard aggressively by the shoulders and shook him. "Where's Enoch?!"

"Er…I'm not entirely sure."

Hugh was about to shake him again, but was stopped by his long explanatory monologue. "I suppose if he were to divert attention away from himself he would falsely lead you to one location but run to another in order to buy time. In this case, Enoch has led you here to Miss Peregrine's house but is instead running around it from outside."

"That sneaky bastard." He shook Millard's hand vehemently. "Thanks a bunch, Millard." Hugh quickly ran out of the house, and after, Enoch ran out of the room by Millard.

Enoch smiled. "That was an interesting lie you gave there."

Millard shrugged. "It took me a while to figure out something was wrong."

"A while?" He raised an eyebrow. "Didn't seem like a while. How'd you come up with that on the spot?"

"I have my tricks," Millard said slyly.

Enoch turned to run upstairs and thanked him. "I'll be upstairs."

In the midst of running in the hallway, he bumped into a hateful looking Hugh, who was glaring down at him, open hands twitching. Enoch backed away while Hugh walked steadily towards him.

"How'd you get here?" he asked apprehensively.

"None of your business," Hugh said, as he grabbed Enoch by the collar and pushed him against the wall. Enoch shut his eyes, anticipating a beating. The two boys were caught by surprise when Miss Peregrine called at them.

Miss Peregrine walked over to them, pipe in hand. She was looking at them sternly. "Now, why are you two boys lollygagging in the hallway?"

Hugh let Enoch go and pointed a finger at him. "He killed one of my bees."

Miss Peregrine moved her stern eyes to Enoch. "Is that true, Enoch?"

Enoch looked up at her with sheepish eyes. "It's true, what he says. Er…it wasn't on purpose though."

"Dirty liar, you," Hugh growled.

He put out his hands in self-defense. "It was an accident. I didn't mean to."

Hugh grabbed Enoch by the collar while Miss Peregrine switched her eyes between them. "Well then. Here's what I have for you two: Hugh, I understand that you love your bees and share a deep bond with them, but we don't go around chasing people just because one of them happened to be squashed. Especially since it was never intended."

Hugh nodded in understanding.

"And Enoch, make sure you watch your hands. Those bees tend to wander around aimlessly."

Enoch nodded vehemently. "Thank you, Miss Peregrine."

She stared at them for a moment. "Well, then. I'll be off elsewhere. You boys behave yourselves." Miss Peregrine turned into a bird and flew past the two peculiar children.

Once she was gone, Hugh walked in front of Enoch, glaring at him. For a moment, Enoch thought Hugh was going to beat him to a pulp. Instead, Hugh said quietly, "I'll never forgive you."

He walked away, leaving Enoch staring at him. It was true. He clearly didn't mean to anger Hugh by inadvertently killing one of his bees. But the fact that he won't forgive him for it makes him all the more guilty. Sure, he can be mean and piss people off that way, but he would never go as far as to deliberately kill one of Hugh's bees. Enoch knows how much they mean to him. And now, because of a stupid accident, he lost his credibility and friendship with Hugh.

Enoch sat down against the wall, hid his head near his knees, and let the tears flow.

"You wait until I get to burn your head off!" Emma shouted at a running Millard, who had made a snarky remark at her. They were having an argument about fossil fuels and whether or not they caused wildfires. The remark mainly had to do with her ability; how her personality was too hyper and might've been the root cause for wildfires and the planet heating up. Emma obviously didn't take this very well and proceeded to lightly burn Millard's shoulder in response. That's when he decided to run away from her.

During their chase, they stopped running once they noticed Enoch, crouched against the wall, sobbing. Rarely has Enoch ever cried before, so this had to be something serious.

"Enoch, what's wrong?" Emma asked, crouching near Enoch's position. All he did was peek at Emma with tear-stained eyes then look away.

Millard gently put a hand on Enoch's back. "Enoch-buddy, tell us what happened?"

Emma and Millard waited for a response. Then he finally said something through his interminable sobs. "It's Hugh."

"Hugh?" Emma asked, concerned. "What about Hugh?"

Enoch answered, interrupted by occasional sobs. "He…I killed one of his bees…but it was an accident…and he got mad and wanted to hurt me."

Emma was a bit taken aback. She's never seen Hugh mad enough to hurt someone over a few bees being killed. Or maybe she did. She probably just didn't remember. "Did you apologize?"

He sniffled and nodded.

"And he's still mad at you?"

Enoch hesitated, sobbing at a minimum now. "He…he said that he would never forgive me."

Millard and Emma looked at each other in surprise. Emma was the first to break the silence. "Now that's absolutely ridiculous. You should apologize to him again."

"If Hugh didn't listen to Enoch the first time then how is he going to listen to him again?" Millard asked.

"We'll take him with us. That's what."

Enoch vehemently shook his head.

Emma gave him a stern stare. "Why not?"

He paused, looking about to burst into tears again. "Hugh hates me now."

"Nonsense, Enoch," Millard said, patting his back. "Everybody loves you."

"Not anymore," Enoch said glumly.

"Enoch, you may be a jerk sometimes, but you're still our friend. Alright? We'll take you with us to Hugh so that we can finally convince Hugh to forgive you."

Enoch looked at Millard uneasily. "Are you sure?"

He nodded. "Fairly certain."

All three of them found Hugh sitting solemnly under a tree by the flowers that he and Enoch were previously playing at. He was half-heartedly messing around with Enoch's figurines. He noticed Millard and Emma, walking Enoch towards him with a hand on each of Enoch's shoulders. Hugh looked up into Enoch's nervous expression and asked, with slight venom in his tone: "What do you want?"

Enoch opened his mouth to speak but Millard interrupted. "Enoch wants to apologize to you. Again."

Hugh shrugged, staring at Enoch with loathing. "I don't care. He can apologize to me all he wants. I still won't accept."

Millard sighed and walked over to Hugh, crouching near him. He averted his eyes to Millard. "Hugh, it wasn't like Enoch did it purposely out of malice. He even apologized afterwards because he felt guilty."

"And Enoch wouldn't do things like that," Emma added in.

"Yeah, exactly. He's sort of like a…" He paused to think of a good simile for Enoch's deeply warm-hearted nature being overshadowed by his sarcasm and pessimism. "...a delicious cupcake covered in dog manure."

Emma laughed while Hugh chucked slightly, a small smile appearing on his face. "That's not even a good comparison. The cupcake would just be contaminated."

"Er…right," Millard stammered, face flushing. "Er…"

"Millard, what kind of comparison is that?" Emma asked, still laughing. Enoch even chuckled a bit too.

"No clue. Let's forget that was said. What I meant to say was that Enoch is like a seemingly terrifying beast. They may look mean and scary, but deep down they have a heart and all they need is a friend to support them."

"That comparison wasn't any better—that was sort of corny, actually—but I see your point," Hugh said.

"So, does that mean you forgive Enoch?" Millard asked eagerly.

Hugh's expression darkened. "He killed one of my bees. I can't forgive him for that."

"It was only one bee out of a thousand," he pleaded. "C'mon, Hugh."

"But they were my children," Hugh said quietly.

Millard put a hand on Hugh's back. "It was only one child. Please, Hugh. Let's end this needless feud."

Hugh looked down, deep in thought. After a long pause, he took a deep sigh, stood up and walked in front of Enoch. For a moment, Enoch was expecting Hugh to say something like "I hate you and I'll never forgive you." But he was taken by surprise when he said, "I forgive you, Enoch."

He was at a loss for words. He was nearly about to cry when he said, "Really?"

Hugh looked at Enoch with a small smile and shrugged. "I guess so."

Enoch burst into tears and quickly embraced Hugh in a hug, voice muffled by his shirt. "Thank you so much, Hugh! That means a lot to me."

His small smile grew to a warmer smile. Hugh laid his chin upon Enoch's head, running his hand through Enoch's hair as he sobbed. "Aww! Don't mention it."

They both stood there for a while, one comforting the other. Hugh broke the silence. "And I'm sorry for acting like an angry jackass towards you. I didn't mean to make you feel like I hated you."

Emma clapped at the sight of the two boys. "Yay! We're finally friends again!"

"No, we're not," Millard said jokingly, crossing his arms. "You called me an idiot."

"Oh, shut your yap, Millard."

Millard, Enoch, and Hugh laughed in response. Emma followed suit. They all stopped laughing once they heard a fake cough, followed by a stern voice: "Children."

All of the peculiar children looked behind to face Miss Peregrine. Her stony expression changed into a warm smile. "Ready for lunch?"

They all consented jubilantly and Miss Peregrine led them the way back to her house. All the peculiars ate with pleasure, with Hugh sitting next to Enoch and talking away to him. Miss Peregrine mentioned the incident that occurred between Hugh and Enoch, but assured everyone that they're getting along now. Enoch and Hugh looked at each other, wondering how Miss Peregrine knew what happened. Some of the peculiars poked fun at them, but they just ignored them. For the rest of the day, Hugh spent the majority of his time with Enoch, building a stronger friendship and making Enoch gradually feel better around him. Their bond was so strong that they decided to sleep together that night.

That was one of the last times Hugh snapped at Enoch.
