Awareness returned with the subtlety of a freight train, and suddenly I was in a blank… space? I could only see five feet away before a white fog blocked my sight. The only thing clearly visible was a wooden lectern directly in front of me. Although, once my focus shifted to the lectern, I found myself unable to look away. Oddly, any panic this should have caused felt muted.
The lectern contained a stack of papers, a pen, and an envelope addressed to ' SacrificeMichael'. The very obvious address on the envelope caused another wave of muted emotion before I found himself opening the envelope. Inside was a letter to himself that read:
"Good News! I've decided to retire! As such, I need a nest egg, and lucky for us, I found you! Well, lucky for me. You, on the other hand, are very much in trouble. You see I happened upon you in my travels and saw your nascent spark, and knew you were special. That's where my good friend Jeffy comes in. He loves to collect special souls, and he happened to have something I just had to have. Now, Jeffy the Demon owns your soul, and I have an award winning hell-hound.
In case you're not entirely sold on going to hell to be tortured for eternity, I've left you a way out as my good deed for the year. Exactly a year, that is. Yep! You heard right. Jeffy will come to reap your soul for eternal damnation in exactly a year… Unless you get rid of him first.
These documents will be your only chance in this world. Oh, right! You're not in your world anymore, kiddo. You've been pulled out and shipped off to Jeffy's home dimension, Supernatural. You'll have a chance to decide some particulars about your insertion, but since I sold you I have to keep the goods intact. So, you're a full blooded human no matter what.
On the off chance you make it through Jeffy's prized hell-hounds and minions to terminate your contract, I've done my good deed for the decade, and left behind something unique and valuable for you to discover. Oh, and it'll be guarded by every demon or angel below the princes and archangels. You've got ten years to find it, fight your way through the mooks guarding it, and escape with it, before it disappears with your only chance home."
I stood there for an indeterminable amount of time just trying to wrap my head around my situation. I'd been kidnapped? soul-napped? I distinctly became aware of my semi corporeal status at the thought. Yes, I'd been soul-napped because my soul was special and worth something to a demon in a fictional universe.
Yes, I was aware of the Supernatural T.V. series, and was even a bit of a fan. That doesn't mean I was excited to be dumped into that death world for ten years, or more likely one year. Sam and Dean only lived as long as they did because they had a platoon of angels resurrecting them every time a monster, or another hunter ganked them. I doubt I'd even last long enough for Jeffy to send his award winning hell-hounds after me before ganking myself somehow.
I felt my rising panic become a distant emotion again, and found my focus drifting towards the documents by the envelope. I started to read them, and found an introduction.
"Welcome to the world of Supernatural.
This is a world of angels and demons, of monsters and things that go bump in the night, and of the hunters who track these nightmares down and kill them to keep humanity safe. Things have been getting worse in recent years, and unless something is done, the apocalypse is on the horizon. There are those, of course, who would prevent that end. At the center of this story are two brothers, Sam Dean Winchester. They were raised by their father as Hunters in the wake of their mother's murder by the Prince of Hell, Azazel. At first, they're merely pawns in the larger game, killing whatever monsters they can find and doing their best with what little they have, but as time goes on, they find themselves at the center of a plot to bring about the end of all life as we know it. You're entering the world of the Supernatural."
I noticed that parts of the document were altered with what looked like a black sharpie. Specifically, where there should have been different races and special child gifts were marked out. I also noticed that two drawbacks had been marked already. On the bright side, I got the C.P. for the drawbacks. So, I was starting with 1800 C.P., but stuck as a baseline Human in a death world.
My Age and Gender were set for 28 and Male respectively. So, I'd have a couple of years on Dean Winchester, and the insertion Time was just before episode one, Late October in 2005. Luckily, I was given free reign to choose my starting location.
Going further through the documents I saw I could choose my origin, and knew I had to be a Hunter. Just choosing to be a hunter gave three very important Perks for my future in this Death world.
Walking Talking Bestiary was free to Hunters and specified that :
"Knowledge-wise you are the equal to the famed Men Of Letters possessing absolute knowledge of all things supernatural from monsters to magic to even recipes and blueprints on how to cure and kill monsters; and yes this includes all the machinery and inventions. Basically, all the info the Men Of Letters possess you now do in your head."
Peak Physical Condition was free to Hunters, and made me :
"the physical and mental apex of your race whatever the reasons might be in terms of physical and mental attributes you are the greatest, mightiest and most perfect example of your kind that can ever possibly exist. Also comes with free abs and muscles tailored to your preference."
Shed Tears in Hell was discounted for hunters at 100 C.P. and ensured I would :
"possess a will so powerful that what could break others wouldn't even give you pause, hell you could survive thousands of years of torture in Hell itself by the very best there is and at the end of every session you would still be able to smile and spit in their face all without shedding a single tear."
These three perks would give me a fighting chance when I inevitably run into monsters in my everyday life. I wasn't even considering the chance that I wouldn't somehow run into a werewolf at the local grocery store, or some such nonsense.
Another freebie perk I could grab was Prophet of God because I was a pure human. This perk gave four abilities on top of the position as the conduit of the word of God.
"- Localization: What this ability does is allow you to sense the presence of anybody you desire and know their exact location whenever you desire. This ability is so great that you can even sense the power of Archangels and Primordial Entities alike;
even the fabled Darkness is not invisible to you.
- Supernatural Senses: This ability is akin to the one above but while that one allows you to locate beings this one is what lets you feel their power. In fact, these senses allow you to even feel the alignment of power, e.g. if it is dark, evil, demonic, angelic etc.
- Pre Postcognition: With this ability, you can see into both the past and the future, receiving visions of what has been and what could be. At first, you will not be able to control this power and only with time and training will you be able to control and induce them, however, as a benefit of the source of your abilities your visions cannot be stopped or hindered whatsoever.
- Multi-Lingual: This allows you to speak any ancient language that has long since died out, even supernatural languages. This applies to future jumps as well.
- Word Of God: This allows you to both read and repair the word of God. Unlike in canon, you can never be taken over by God whatsoever. Post-Jump, you take this honor with you into the future jumps."
I was a little concerned that this might put me on some kind of supernatural radar, or watch list, but decided it was worth the risk. Localisation alone meant I might be able to find Jeffy within a year. This also saved me the C.P. on purchasing a similar perk to find my soul napper. I decided to even the odds a little more and purchased Natural Witch :
"Natural magic users can learn in months that would take others decades, who with just a look can memorize any spell and take an inborn ability and create a spell mimicking it perfectly."
This perk would be an immense boon on top of the spell knowledge the Men of Letters acquired. I grabbed a 100 C.P. perk called Multilingual :
"Like all stereotypical magic systems this one too runs on old dead languages. I mean come on why can't it just be English, French, German etc why Latin or Enochian or something else that is ancient. But, to do magic you are going to have to have this. What this does is make you fluent in all forms of human language (Enochian is not a human language that was just an example of a language that can be used)that exists or has existed in this world. Post-jump, this changes to include any other languages and if you need other languages to do magic in future jumps this will also give that." Hopefully with this, the knowledge of the Men of Letters and being a Natural Witch would help me get started on my magical education.
The next was my biggest purchase, and definitely the most important of the bunch. For 600 C.P., I bought Normal Life :
"In this world, it is always the normal people, the innocents who live in the light and are ignorant of the supernatural. It is always those people who are killed and massacred without a shred or hint of mercy in their killers. However, you are an anomaly among those innocents you see, unlike the majority of them so long as you leave the supernatural alone they will leave you alone, i.e., so long as you don't go looking for a Pagan God for example you won't end up being sacrificed to it, so long as you want to live a normal life you won't ever be touched by the supernatural no demon will possess or kill you, no monster will harm you, if the entire town is possessed by demons not only will you be untouched you will also be able to leave it without any problem etc. Also, for those who want to be in a relationship with a member of the supernatural so long as you both want to remain as far away from it as you can you won't be affected."
This perk alone would increase my survival chances tremendously. I'd still need to get my soul back, but afterwards I'd have a chance to relax. Which would be impossible in this death world without a perk ensuring it. Moving on to the items, I grabbed the essential Hunter's load out
- Salt " Utilized by Hunters, salt can be used to repel ghosts, demons and various other supernatural creatures. Salt can be used to stop ghosts and demons entering a room if an uninterrupted line of salt is in front of all entry points, e.g. windows and doors or in a circle around the Hunter. Salt can also be used to force a demon out of a person through ingestion. This bottle of salt is unlimited. "
- Iron Crowbar "Another material copiously utilized by Hunters, this metal possesses strong supernatural properties and can be used as a potent weapon against certain supernatural entities. Some examples of species weak to iron are Demons - this can burn most Demons - Wendigos are weakened by it, Ghosts can be temporarily banished by iron nor can they cross iron, and Hellhounds can be harmed with iron. This crowbar, as you are paying CP, is indestructible and will always find its way back to you within ten minutes max.
- Dream Car "This lets you purchase any car you want, price be damned. Yes this also includes modified cars but the modifications can't be weapons or increased defenses, they can only be speed based. "
- News Alert "A dream for every Hunter, this is a news alert that will pop up on every electronic device you have (or one, two etc your preference) whenever a death or anything related to the supernatural pops up in the world. Letting you know whenever you are needed. You can choose to limit this to a country or the world. You can also change how this manifests e.g. newspaper etc. Your choice."
- Firearms "As long as something is classified as a firearm you can purchase it here. Every purchase comes with unlimited ammunition and prevention of the firearms breaking, needing reloading or needing maintenance whatsoever. "
- EMF Meter "A meter that measures electromagnetic fields which are commonly given off by spirits. This device is used to find out whether a location is haunted by spirits, ghosts and even some deities. When in their presence the meter makes a loud noise. Now, normally this device would be affected by power lines rendering it useless but as you are paying CP, not only is the meter rendered indestructible, it is now no longer affected by power lines and will only make that noise in the presence of the supernatural. "
Looking through the list, I wavered on the Men of Letters bunker and Tablets of God before deciding to pick the item that would give me more of an edge against Jeffy.
Tablets Of God "Otherwise known as the Word Of God, this was ascribed into creation by the Angel Metatron himself in his role as the scribe of God. These tablets possess incredible ancient knowledge and can yield numerous special effects. Currently there are three tablets pertaining to the three most powerful creatures in the universe: the angels, demons and leviathans. Each tablet contains their history, weaknesses, how to kill them, and basic knowledge as well. The Angel tablet also possesses a way to banish each Angel from heaven while the demon tablet possesses a way to close off Hell permanently. Can be purchased three times max. In future jumps these change to encompass the most powerful races and will include weaknesses, history, etc. of those races." -[Taken three times]
I double checked everything and verified my point total before turning my attention back to the one section left to fill in, Location. I needed to choose my starting point, and it had to be somewhere that would help me accomplish my tasks. I could start at Sam's college, Bobby's place, the Roadhouse, or any other notable location from the series I could think of. It was an important decision, and would set the tone for my time in this death world. Knowing all of this, I still felt an odd thrill run through me as I put pen to paper and vanished from this illusory area.
I felt as if I had just awoken from a vivid dream, and yet it also felt as if I had blinked and imagined it all. It took several moments just standing in a daze before I felt my thoughts starting to arrange themselves properly. That was when the memories hit me. They came hard and fast, and would have overwhelmed me if not for my mind running clearer and faster than ever before.
I had purchased a number of knowledge type perks before coming here. Walking, Talking Bestiary, Multilingual, Hand to Hand Asskicking, and even Prophet of God would have involved a lot of information. Of course, when I chose these perks, I never considered how I would actually obtain the knowledge.
It turns out, I had a life here before now. Or, I had memories of a life before showing up in this parking lot. I have twenty eight years of being trained as a Men of Letters Initiate, and later as a Hunter. I had been picked up from an orphanage in Britain to be trained as one of the Men of Letters. I had undergone martial training, strict schooling, moral and ethical training, and a host of other indoctrination methods. This lasted until I was nineteen, and had to go through the graduation test. I was sent to Rhode Island to inspect an old chapter house.
That's where my life took a terrible turn. I had barely been in the states for two days before I came across a coven of vampires. I was careful to avoid notice, and tried to slip past them. I might have been trained by the best, but I was still only human. It's still unclear how, but they locked onto my scent and chased me across three states before I was bit and turned into one of them.
I wound up killing the rest of them before slinking away to an abandoned warehouse nearby. I was raised to be a monster killer for the Men of Letters, and that upbringing refused for me to turn into a bloodsucker. I fought it off for as long as I could, and would have gone into a blood rage if a Demon hadn't found me, and offered a deal.
That demon was 'Jeffy', or as I know him now, my soul napper. To everyone else he is Jeffrit the CrossRoads Demon. I traded my soul for ten years of life and not dying as things I was raised to hate. At the time, I thought it was well worth it.
A side effect of my near vampirism was that my physique was stuck on the cusp of humanity. I might not have been as strong as a vampire, but I had reached the limits of humanity. My lifting weight was nearly 1000 pounds, my running speed up to 27 miles per hour, and I could take a hell of a beating, and several stabbings, before needing to worry.
I also noticed that I was able to retain information easier afterwards. All those late night study sessions and grueling testing done by the Men of Letters caused me to already be near encyclopedic in my lore and mystical knowledge. Afterwards, I was past encyclopedic and nearing genius levels on retention alone.
The downside was that my long absence and failure to even start my initiation mission flunked me from the Men of Letters. Of course, having made a deal with a Demon disqualified me from rejoining as well. I was only lucky they were still treating me as a no-name drop-out and not a traitor, or I might have been issued a kill order to retain their prestige.
As it was, I had been left adrift in the middle of the United States, and indirectly warned not to return to Britain. This was an enormous blow because I was literally raised to become part of the order. I ended up wallowing in depression before managing to find the resolve to do some good in my ten years. I wound up going across the country hunting monsters, mainly vampires to be honest. I had a serious grudge with the blood suckers. I tended to avoid the local hunters due to my physique clearly reaching the limits of humanity. I didn't want another trigger happy hunter shooting at me in the middle of a hunt.
Fast forward to the present and I was a seasoned, but isolated, hunter in the prime of his life, but also only a year from his death. It was certainly an ironic situation to find myself in.
I felt clearer headed after sorting everything out in my head, and took stock of my surroundings. I appeared to be in a near empty parking lot next to an impressive looking car. On closer inspection, it was the Dream Car I had picked out, a Dodge Challenger SRT Demon 170. This was a car released in 2023 that could go from 0-60 in a little over one and a half seconds. I felt myself grin a little manically that I officially had a futuristic drag racing capable car in the early 2000's.
I somehow knew that the rest of my Hunter's Arsenal was in the hidden compartment in the trunk. I also knew that my Firearm purchase was a Glock 19 in my shoulder holster. That was another item that wouldn't be common around this time period, and would need inspection at a later time.
Oddly enough, the Tablets of God were hidden in some kind of one time use pocket space. I instinctively knew that I could take them out at any time, but wouldn't be able to put them back afterwards. That meant I would hold off on inspecting them until I had some privacy.
I wanted to check on my magic as well, but momentarily hesitated on how to do so. I was still in a semi-public space. This parking lot appeared to just be the far side of a strip mall in a small town somewhere in Ohio called Waynesville. I grinned a little as I remembered a little french cantrip designed to see in the dark. It was getting late enough that I could justify using it.
"Lumiere." I whispered, and waited as I felt something in me resonate. It took the time between blinks for my eyes to suddenly change to a form of Dark Vision. Taking in the scenery in near perfect lighting was certainly different. It also reminded me that I'd apparently never used magic like this before now, and made me consider why.
It came to me that I probably never considered trying any magic because the higher tier members of the Men of Letters tended to be the spell casters, and I was just a drop-out grunt. It made sense, but also made me a little thankful that the conditioning "I" went through seems to have waned after coming to this world.
For instance, before now, I had never thought of getting out of the Demon Deal. I was a broken shell of a man just waiting for my time to run out. Now, I was both a new man, and also the same as I'd ever been. I hadn't taken over someone's body. I knew I would have done the same kind of things in the same situations, but I now had a different perspective on my life. Clearly, someone set me up to be killed by vampires, and probably even sent Jeffy to me. It's unclear whether someone wanted my soul, or just to see me dead.
Knowing from the letter that I have a special soul, leads me to believe that someone set me up to sell my soul to Jeffy. This meant I really needed to find that Demon, and not just for my soul. I needed to know who my enemies were if I wanted a chance at life in this world. That's assuming Jeffy wasn't the mastermind, of course.
I tried to push aside these unnecessary thoughts for now. I would get through all of this, but I needed to hunker down and experiment with my Perks and Abilities before running off on a killing spree. Which meant I needed a safe house, and supplies. My hunter lifestyle meant I basically lived out of Motels and whatever car I picked up on the road. That would change now though. I had the knowledge to enchant and ward a proper Men of Letters Chapter House. I could apply that to my new safe house.
Nodding internally, I got into my Dream Car , and started the car. I needed to find a motel for the night, and get access to the internet. I vaguely remember that I had made some $300 dollars hustling pool in a biker bar a couple of towns away. That would get me a couple of nights, and hopefully let me find my next destination, and a way to earn money.
It wasn't easy going to sleep that first night. I wound up salting the windows and doors, and using simple words to deter visitors. I even slept with my Glock under the pillow for comfort. I eventually managed to nod off after twitching at random sounds, and mentally freaking out over my circumstances.
The morning was scarcely better because it allowed me to mull over my situation again. I was living on borrowed time. I needed to get my soul back before anything else. I couldn't even contemplate helping the Winchesters on their journey until I had my soul back. I doubt the Angels guarding them would let someone interfere in their Apocalypse, much less someone under a demon deal.
I was positive they had angel bodyguards as well because it was revealed in the show that they died numerous times, and always found their way back to fulfill their roles. That kind of thing required some kind of surveillance, and I wasn't positive I could avoid it just yet. I knew there had to be ways around it somewhere in my Men of Letters knowledge, or possibly in the Angel Tablet. Either way, the Winchesters were radioactive until I got a hold of my Perks, Abilities, and Soul.
Speaking of Abilities, I was a Prophet, and that meant I should be able to use divination of some kind. I wonder if that would help my money problem. I needed funds to build a safe house, and I couldn't use a Men of Letters bunker until Henry Winchester brought the key back through Time Travel. The other chapter houses would definitely be watched, and I had managed to make almost no friends in hunter circles to borrow one. No, I would need to build one, or find an abandoned structure to start from.
I could possibly follow Bobby Singer's lead and use a grain silo as the base. That's pretty inconspicuous, and finding one made of iron would help defend against certain spirits. With my knowledge I could make nearly anything hidden using wards similar to the unplottable charm found in Harry Potter. I wouldn't want to steal from some random farmer though. So, I would need to divine an abandoned Silo, or buy something similar from someone. Going for inconspicuous seemed to be the smart move as of now. I could just as easily get a mansion for my base, but it would definitely get noticed at some point. So, the best bet would be to find something discrete and abandoned. No matter what my base would start as, I would still need to ward it, and that would require cash.
That settles it then. I'll need to acquire money, hopefully through divination of some kind of artifact, or lost jewelry, or the like. Feeling secure in finding a way forward, I settled in to meditate on my foresight ability. I'd read enough books on psychics to know it required a certain state of mind and focus to use such gifts.
It came oddly easy to me to fall into a trance, and direct my thoughts to unowned cash or jewelry. I suspected my Natural Witch perk had a hand in the process. My mind went to random nickels, dimes, and other loose change on the streets, and decided to try and focus on more valuable items. I saw vague flashes of graveyards that I sensed held personal belongings. I discarded it right away, and turned to something less morally reprehensible for now. I'd need to adjust my personal morals at some point, but for now, it wasn't strictly necessary.
I tried to direct my vision again and saw a money clip someone had dropped at the bus stop. It only looked to be a couple hundred dollars or so, but I had to start somewhere. So, I came out of my trance, I forked over some cash to get a stale egg and cheese sandwich from the Motel before grabbing the money clip at the bus station. It looks like it fell out of someone's pocket when they sat down at a bench. I was a little disappointed that it only had $173 instead of my initial impression, but it would be enough to let me get some supplies.
Luckily, it was the early 2000's, and spiritual medicine is on the rise. I was able to gather some broken antiques, herbs, mortar, pestels, and an assortment of candles within a couple of hours. I took my purchases back to the motel for a quick ritual. It was a ritual made somewhere in the middle ages to repair broken furniture. I was going to use it to repair the broken antiques for a profit. I hadn't been able to get more than a broken watch, a chair, a dog chewed up, and what was probably a hand sewn quilt.
It was still amazing to me how easily magic was coming to me now. I remembered that before regaining my memories, I didn't try more than was necessary during a hunt, or studies. I was almost adverse to the act. I felt that if I started to use magic after my near vampification, then I might go further from being a baseline human. Which was still a stigma at the time due to the indoctrination. Before that though, I only really performed spells as a mark of competency during studies.
Anyway, the watch started to visibly repair itself as hands started to turn again. The chair regained the little wood it lost due to some dog using it as a chew toy, and the quilt seemed to regain some color it lost due to aging. They were still far from perfect due to the ritual using subpar ingredients. Although, this helped a little because if the antiques lost all signs of aging, then I would have trouble actually selling them as antiques.
This seemed to be a sustainable source of income, and wouldn't require an immense effort on my part. A perk of being a prophet was that I could get glimpses of the future and the past. This meant I might not be able to track an item hundreds of years into the past, but I could definitely tell if it was made a month ago in Wyoming. I'd be able to acquire legitimate antiques reliably, and hopefully gather a steady supply of ritual ingredients.
My only concern would be making sure to resell the antiques in a different town. It would be suspicious if I sold a near exact quilt, just in much better condition, to the same person I bought it from. That was a downside of smalltowns like Waynesville, Ohio. There aren't that many antique shops around to run this kind of scheme. It was going to take a lot of driving to make a profit on this.
