Chapter Five: A December to Remember

After a grateful Thanksgiving promise, Rory found herself immersed in a whirlwind of eagerness and yearning. As the frosty days progressed, the city of New Haven adorned itself with shimmering lights and festive decorations, infusing each corner with a radiant ambiance of anticipation and joy. The first day of December had arrived, marking the commencement of the Christmas season for Rory.

She awoke to the cheerful chime of a text message from Logan, which brought a flush of crimson to her cheeks. "Happy Christmas! Check your door," the message read. Filled with excitement, she swiftly rose from her bed, slipped on her cozy slippers, and eagerly made her way to the front door of her dorm room.

As Rory swung open the door, she was greeted by the comforting sight of a steaming cup of coffee perched on her doorstep, accompanied by a neatly wrapped basket. Peering inside the basket, she discovered an assortment of delights: candy canes, tempting chocolates, and a petite, unadorned artificial pine tree.

Nestled among the goodies, Rory found small shimmering stars and charming ornaments, along with a string of twinkling lights specially intended to adorn the tree. A wave of warmth and gratitude washed over her as she realized Logan had thoughtfully curated a gift to bring Christmas cheer into her dorm room.

Rory's heart swelled with appreciation as she snapped a photo of the delightful surprise before gathering everything from the ground and carrying it into her dorm room. Taking a sip of the aromatic coffee, a harmonious blend of espresso and peppermint, her smile grew radiant. It was undoubtedly the perfect way to commence the month of Christmas.

Attaching the picture she had captured, Rory composed a heartfelt message in response to Logan's thoughtfulness. "I don't know what I did to deserve having you in my life," she typed, her gratitude permeating each word. "But I am so thankful for you."

Understanding the time difference between them, Rory wasn't surprised to receive no immediate response from Logan. Grateful for his gestures of kindness, she continued to enjoy her morning.

The enchanting spirit of Christmas embraced the picturesque town of Stars Hollow. Festive decorations adorned every corner, casting a magical glow on the streets. The stars above seemed to dance with joy, mirroring the contagious excitement that filled the hearts of the townspeople. In Stars Hollow, Christmas was not simply a holiday; it was a cherished tradition that brought the community closer together, fostering warmth, love, and a sense of togetherness amidst the winter chill.

Stars Hollow held an irreplaceable spot in Rory's heart, for it was the very town where her journey through life began. It was here that she took her first wobbly steps, stumbling and giggling, supported by the loving arms of her mother. It was in Stars Hollow that she uttered her first words, her voice mingling with the whispers of the wind and the rustling leaves of the town's beloved gazebo. The memories of those early moments were etched deeply within Rory's being, forever symbolizing the beginning of her remarkable story. She spent only a year in Stars Hollow before her mother brought the both of them back to Hartford where her grandparents were.

As the memories flooded Rory's mind, she took herself back to that pivotal conversation that she had with her mother, Lorelai, just a few days before her eighteenth birthday. Sitting together at a local diner, the aroma of coffee filling the air, Lorelai spoke candidly about her dissatisfaction with life in Hartford. She admitted that she felt like an outsider amidst the upper-class society, yearning for a sense of belonging that she found only in Stars Hollow. Rory listened intently, her eyes welling up with understanding and empathy.

And then Lorelai shared her plans, plans that would change both of their lives forever. She had made the brave decision to move back to Stars Hollow and open up her own inn. The excitement in her voice was palpable, a glimmer of hope shining through. Rory couldn't help but be infected by her mother's passion and determination. In that moment, Rory saw her mother as more than just a parent; she saw her as a woman who was willing to take risks, to follow her heart, and to create a life that aligned with her truest self. Rory felt proud of what her mother was doing.

Now, reflecting on that conversation, Rory felt a surge of gratitude for this small town. Stars Hollow and the Dragonfly Inn had become much more than a place to come see her mother, the town welcomed her in just like it welcomed her mother.

Rory parked her car in the farthest spot away from the Inn, a smile slowly coming to her face as she hears the Christmas music blasting. "Rory!" Her mother yells out a welcome as her daughter walks in the front door. She feels her mothers arms wrap around her, giving her a slight squeeze. "I'm happy you made it." It was the first weekend of December and Lori was throwing the town's first holiday party.

"Why wouldn't I make it?" Rory questions, looking around the inn. The inn was busy with the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, it seemed like the whole town was inside the newest business of Stars Hollow. The aroma of freshly baked cookies and cinnamon wafted through the air, mingling with the sound of cheerful conversations and laughter.

As Rory took in the festive decorations, her heart swelled with warmth, and a smile spread across her face. This place, the Dragonfly Inn, was decorated and it was truly a sight to be taken in. Lorelai beamed at Rory, her eyes sparkling with pride and love. "I know you wouldn't miss it, but I always get a bit anxious before the holidays. I just wanted to make sure my amazing daughter was here by my side."

Rory couldn't help but melt into her mother's embrace, feeling the unconditional love that had always surrounded them. In that moment, all worries and stresses melted away as she embraced the joyous atmosphere of the inn.

Familiar faces greeted her as she made her way through the bustling inn, exchanging warm hugs and friendly banter. The guests, too, were caught up in the holiday spirit, their eyes shining with excitement as they mingled and shared stories. Rory takes a moment sending a message off to Logan, "In Star Hollow, the inn's party. Wish you were here."

As she joined the festivities, as Christmas music filled the air, Rory couldn't help but feel a profound sense of contentment, knowing that her weekend was going to be well spent with her mother in this small little beautiful town.

As the temperatures plunged, the heat malfunctioned in the dormitories, leaving Rory in a precarious situation, she sought solace in the haven her loving grandparents had thoughtfully prepared for her. The drive from New Haven to Hartford was worth the warmth.

"Do you recall our very first kiss?" Rory typed, reminiscing about a chilly morning as she found solace in her grandparents' pool house. It was a haven they had arranged for her when she reached eighteen, a personal sanctuary she could retreat to if she sought a brief escape from the pressures of Yale as her mother relocated to Stars Hollow soon after her last birthday.

Rory, clad in a cozy ensemble consisting of Victoria's Secret yoga pants and one of Logan's recently gifted hoodies, continued typing with a blend of nostalgia and warmth. "The memory of that cherished moment still dances upon my lips, transporting me back to the innocent days of our youth. I recall us, at the age of thirteen, seeking refuge from the watchful eyes of our parents in this very pool house."

A melodic ringtone, distinctly belonging to her boyfriend, resonates through the pool house. A smile tugs at the corners of Rory's lips as she answers the call, playful anticipation lacing her voice. "Well, well, what a delightful surprise," she teases him.

Logan's laughter reverberates through the phone line, his amusement evident. "Well, how could I resist calling after receiving such a vivid and enticing text message from you?" he questions playfully. "It sounds like you're currently at the pool house instead of the dorms. What's the story behind that?"

Rory lets out a sigh of frustration. "Sadly, the dorm rooms are zero heat," she complains. "December has truly unleashed its wintry grasp on the east coast. On the bright side though, my grandparents are in Florida, enjoying a work-related getaway for Grandpa. That means I have the entire place to myself."

Logan's voice brims with amusement as he responds, "Indeed, having the whole place to yourself must be quite the highlight. So, how are you keeping yourself busy?"

Rory's voice carries a hint of excitement as she replies, "Well, you know what day it is, Logan. It's December 15th. Only ten more days until Christmas, and even better, just eight more days until I get to see your incredibly handsome face." Rory looks down to the coffee table and the wrapping paper on the couch next to her. "I am wrapping your gifts right now. The boys gifts are already wrapped but I am so excited to give your gifts. I did a GREAT job this year."

Logan chuckles on the other end of the line, his amusement evident. "Oh, really? A great job, huh? Now you've got me even more curious," he teases. In all honesty, Logan didn't care about presents as he was more excited about seeing her but he knew how much she loved giving gifts. "I can't wait to see what you've come up with for me. And don't worry, I've got something special planned for you too." There was no lie, he had presents, but he also had something up his sleeve for her.

Rory's voice brims with excitement as she continues, "You don't have to get me anything, Logan! Just getting to see my favorite person during my favorite time of year is all I need."

Logan's tone turns affectionate, he knew she would say something like that. "Loreali." He only used her full name when it was the two of them and he needed to get a point across. "You truly deserve everything wonderful in life. And I strive to give that to you."

Rory's voice softens, feeling the depth of his words. She takes a moment to soak in his sentiment before responding, her voice filled with gratitude. "Logan... Thank you. You don't know how much your words mean to me." It did truly warm her heart. "And you truly don't have to get me anything, just being with you, that's everything I could ever ask for."

There's a tender pause before Logan replies, his voice filled with determination. "I want to give you the world. I want to be there for you, support you, and make all your dreams come true." He vowed to have a relationship that is different then his parents, hers too. "You're my everything, and I'll always strive to make you feel loved and cherished." A silent promise.

A warmth spreads through Rory's chest as she listens to his heartfelt words. And then suddenly she feels herself wanting to say the three words they haven't said to each other yet, but she stops herself. She couldn't say those words for the first time when they were apart.

There is a silence between the both of them before it's Logan who speaks again. He starts telling her about the latest spot they were in, a tropical spot and the issue of Finn falling in love, again.

The days leading up to the twenty-second of December felt like an eternity for Rory. Each passing hour seemed to stretch on, and the anticipation of seeing Logan again consumed her thoughts. As she wrapped up her last classes and passed her midterms, she couldn't help but feel a sense of freedom wash over her. Finally, she was a free woman, unburdened by the pressures of academia until next year.

As Rory pondered her winter break plans, a wave of indecision washed over her. Though she had the option to stay at her mother's or her grandparents', her thoughts were consumed by the desire to spend as much time as possible with Logan. He would only have so much time here before taking off again.

Rory's eyes fell upon her wallet, and her thoughts turned to the extravagant American Express Black Card that had remained untouched since it was gifted to her. As she carefully considered her options for the holiday season, she couldn't help but weigh the tempting possibilities that such a card could offer. Rory couldn't help but acknowledge the financial resources at her disposal. With a trust fund providing a stable financial cushion and a credit card that offered endless possibilities, she had never truly felt the need to tap into the Black Card before. Her financial security had always been a comfort, allowing her to focus on other aspects of her life and unlike her mother, she never had to worry about bills.

Rory knew what to do, and she would worry about everything else after. She calls the Delmar in West Hartford and books the Corner Suite. The reservation being last minute, it was one of the only few rooms left. When she hangs up the phone, she glances at the clock on her dorm room wall. She feels herself getting a little sad at the fact he wasn't here yet, but she knew that he wouldn't let her down. Logan Huntzberger always kept his promises.

As Rory glanced at the clock on her dorm room wall, a tinge of sadness crept over her. Logan was not yet by her side as expected. Doubts began to gnaw at her, but she quickly reassured herself that Logan had never let her down before. He was never one to break his promises, especially to her.

Nevertheless, Rory's anticipation turned into restlessness as hours passed with no sign of Logan. Questions swirled in her mind, and a small flicker of worry started to grow within her. What could be delaying him? Had something unexpected come up? For a moment, she couldn't help but doubt his reliability, despite knowing his track record.

Trying to shake off her concerns, Rory decided to focus on the things she could control. She busied herself with packing her bags, carefully organizing her clothes and gifts.

As the minutes turned into hours, however, the absence of Logan weighed heavily on her heart. She couldn't help but wonder if everything was alright, even though logic told her that if something was wrong, she would have heard something by now. With a sigh, Rory decided to reach out to him. She dialed his number, hoping for an answer that would alleviate her concerns. The phone rang, but there was no response. Her anxiety heightened as his voice started to speak to leave a voicemail, and a wave of uncertainty washed over her.

Rory's determination to stay positive and hopeful grew stronger with each passing minute. She refused to let anxiety consume her, choosing instead to focus on the love and excitement she felt for the holiday season. Rory looks to her door, willing a knock to come because this is where they agreed to meet and she didn't want to leave her dorm unless it was with him. Rory whispers to herself, "Where are you?"
