CHAPTER 2:
Goat Island
Leaving the small village market where he had sold his fish for 2,086 berries. John went to the tavern and ordered a cold drink from the tavern owner. Sitting at the table, he called out 'Status' in his mind.

The trait was the one he picked in a list of traits provided by the game. It was fitting as he was a sharpshooter in the army back on earth, but he still hasn't tested it out because he had no gun (or bow, or slingshot). He still didn't know how to get perks either.
He tested whether he could gain stat increases by training. He started exercising like he did in the army and after 2 months he gained...
1 Endurance.
He concluded that he would have gotten that 1 endurance even without the system. His power did not improve the effectiveness of training, but he decided to continue training anyway.
As for the exp, it has been 2 months since he arrived on Goat Island, and he's only leveled up once since then.

2 months earlier
After three days of recovery, John felt he was back in shape. Standing up, he stretched and did some light jumping exercises before he walked out of the room.
"Hey John! Why are you walking around already? Have you fully recovered?" The old man asked as he picked up his fishing tools when he saw John was out of his room. John saw this and approached Mitsuo.
"As you can see, I'm fine now." He said. "Thank you for helping me out man; now let me help you out as well." John said with a big smile. He was a man who appreciated people who helped him and wanted to pay back the goodness that he received.
"No, no, no. Just relax today young man." Seeing that John was indeed energetic, Mitsuo thought John needed to move his body. "Tell you what, why don't you go around and check the village, get yourself a feel of where the shops are, oh and talk to the people. If you plan to stay here, it's good to get to know them. My daughter works at the tavern. Say hello to her as well." Mitsuo said while smiling, he opened his closet and took out a tunic and some sandals. He set them down on the table and then left the house towards his fishing boat.
Looking at his back, John tried out something. 'Observe'

So It works. This is probably all it can show me, I hope it can level up.
Then, a new window appeared in front of John.

John was surprised. If I get this many quests every time, then I can level up a lot. Little did he know, it was the only quest he got in two months.
He wore the tunic and sandals and left the house. As soon as he stepped outside, a notification appeared in his peripheral vision.

An experience bar appeared and he saw it was 5/100.
So I'll level up after this quest? And get 5 exp per location? Can I fast travel to this location? Hmm, that would be sweet, but I'm guessing that is not the case.
John was not optimistic because he had been gradually realizing that this system was a bit underpowered.
Outside, he saw that Mitsuo's house was close to the sea and had a small dock in front of it; behind the house, he assumed, was a path that led to the town. The path led towards the entrance to town, while below was the docks.

The first building he saw was the tavern. Inside, he greeted the tavern owner and introduced himself. Just then, a woman approached him.
"Oh, are you that guy my father found? He said you were shot in the head. Are you sure you should be walking around already?" The woman was of regular height, had long dark hair, and had a fair complexion. She wore an apron and a bandana on her head. "Oh, I'm Sasa, Mitsuo's daughter. You're John, right? How did you end up here on Goat Island?"
"I'm sorry, I don't remember what happened or how I got here. All I know is my name." John said as he held the back of his head. He knew this excuse wouldn't work for long; he had to come up with a plausible scenario for how he got there.
"Oh, I'm sure you will get your memories back soon. Are you planning on staying here?" Sasa said, with a hopeful look in her eyes, which didn't go unnoticed by John.
"Yes, I think I will. I plan to pay your father back for helping me. By the way, this place, Goat Island, is it located in any particular country?" John asked while smiling. He wanted to get his bearings and understand where he was in this new world.
Is this just a random fantasy world?
"Oh, Goat Island isn't part of any country," Sasa said. "It's just a small island here in East Blue." She paused for a moment before continuing. "We're actually quite far from the Goa Kingdom and the Marine base at Shells Town."
"I see, and do we have ferries here or do I have to get my own boat to get to other places?" Inside, John was actually very surprised.
East Blue? Marines? Shells town? isn't that in One Piece?
They talked for a while before John got up and said goodbye, leaving the tavern. He was thinking all the while as he walked. He saw a building with a sign that read 'All-In-One Shop' and assumed it was the general store. He went inside and spoke to the shopkeeper. The shop sold various items such as ropes, fishing rods, pens, ink, and even clothing, but what caught his eye was the rifle on the wall.
The shopkeeper said from the counter, "That's not for sale, boy; it's decorative." She noticed John looking at the old weapon.
John asked, "Where can I get one of these?"
"You can obtain some from the Goa Kingdom, but the best ones are located in Loguetown." The older woman replied.
"Thank you, ma'am. I'll be sure to shop here once I get myself settled." John said as he left the shop.
"Haha! I'll see you again boy!"
John walked down to the docks and saw the village market.

Goat Island Lower District

It was small but quite busy. It's probably where Mitsuo sells his fish. The ships on the docks were small and were most likely only used for fishing. He talked to more people and found out that a merchant ship comes here every month to trade.
He had planned to help out with Mitsuo's job for a bit, learn the ropes and settle down in Goat Island probably as a fisherman. But when he learned that this is the world of One piece, his perspective changed.
What if this Island gets attacked by pirates? Will my stats help me to survive?
He walked across the market and up the exit on the other side. There he saw the town square.

He had leveled up; his first level up in this world. He saw the experience bar now read 15/200. He decided to hold onto the point for now, as it might be useful later.
He walked to the town square and there, he saw children playing and some people just relaxing under the shade of the trees. He opted to sit on one of the benches as well.
The characters in One Piece are incredibly powerful. If I were to use a rifle against them, I doubt they would even be phased by it. Devil fruits, blades that can cut bullets, and Haki. They possess all sorts of powers that would make it impossible for me to defeat them.

Can't you coat your weapons with Haki? If I could coat bullets with Haki, it would be able to penetrate their defenses. Shanks' crew has a lot of gun-wielding members, and they are arguably one of the strongest pirate crews in One Piece!
He stood up with a determined look. He had decided on his first goal in this world.
