A Meaningful Gift
Midnight Hope smiled as she went up to the Watchtower, having been called by her uncle, Green Lantern. Flash saw her and waved, to which she waved back and he let her in as he was on watch duty at the moment. She flew in and found the control room. "Hi, Flash," she said in greeting.
"What's up, Hope?" He asked, smiling. "GL said you'd be dropping by."
"Is there a mission?" She asked. "He didn't give me much information."
"Not quite," the speedster said as J'onn came up to them along with Spectre.
"The others are waiting," the Martian Manhunter said with a smile.
"Alright, let's go," Flash said, pressing a few buttons.
Lea looked around, but didn't see anyone come to take over watch duty. "Am I up for watch duty?" She asked curiously.
"Not today, Midnight," Spectre said, smiling. "There's a meeting in the other room. Flash is setting the automatic watch systems to keep an eye out while we're in the meeting."
"You sure that will be enough to warn us of any danger coming our way?" She asked, recalling when Scarecrow snuck aboard.
"Yes, and I'm doing a constant sweep of the Watchtower too," J'onn reassured her. "No one's getting in like Scarecrow did."
"Good to know," Flash said, giving a small shudder as he frowned before he smiled. "Come on, we better not keep the others waiting."
He zipped off and J'onn followed with Spectre and Midnight Hope bringing up the rear. "How have things been for you, Midnight?" The ghostly hero asked.
"It's been going really well," she said honestly.
"I heard you and Huntress teamed up to stop Crazy Quilt," J'onn said, smiling. "Very impressive."
The young Lantern smiled bashfully. "Just trying to do my best to be a good hero and a good partner," she admitted.
They made it to the meeting room and Superman began passing by and holding out a hat. "'Reach in and grab a name," he said.
"What's this for, Superman?" Fire asked curiously.
"It's Super Hero Helpers Day," he explained. "You pick a name and you get to be that person's secret hero helper and you also get to either buy them or make them a gift to give them in a few days when the real exchange happens."
"Kind of like Secret Santa, only for heroes," Green Lantern said, smiling.
Wonder Woman reached into the hat Superman held out to her and she selected a name. "Is this another Earth custom for the Christmas holiday?" She asked. "Or is it done for anytime?"
"Just for Christmas," Lea found herself replying, which surprised her and she was glad she had her hood up to hide her face, which she was sure was a bit red at the moment.
"Not everyone partakes in it, but it is a fun thing to do," Flash said. "Just don't say who you got. They're not supposed to know until the day of the gift exchange."
"Flash is right," Superman said as everyone had selected a name. "Alright, for some rules. If you're unsure about what to give the person you go, you can ask the other heroes, but once again, don't tell anyone who you got. The gifts don't have to be extravagant either. It's the thought that counts."
Everyone nodded and left while Lea looked to see who she got and her eyes widened as she saw she was Batman's secret helper. She took a deep breath. "Okay," she said, her mind racing as to what Batman would like. A gentle hand touched her shoulder and she jumped a little, but saw it was Green Lantern, who smiled at her gently.
"Don't worry about it so much, kiddo," he said reassuringly. "If it helps, observe the person you go. You might get some ideas from observing them."
She smiled at her uncle gratefully. "Thanks, GL," she said before taking a deep breath. "Should I go with homemade or buy a gift this time?"
"Well, you're very creative and homemade gifts are unique," he said. "Let your imagination take hold and go from there. Unleash the artist, kiddo."
She giggled and nodded, hugging him. "Thanks," she said.
"By the way, maybe you can give me some ideas," he said. "Would finding a gift with someone's color scheme be a good idea?"
"Depending on the gift, I'd say yes," Midnight replied. "Since it's winter time, maybe something like a sweater, a scarf, or a coat. Even gloves would be neat with someone's color scheme."
Green Lantern nodded. "Thanks, Lea," he said. "I best get looking then."
She smiled and fell into thought, thinking about what to get Batman.
Little did she know that Batman had picked her name to be her secret helper. The other heroes had been surprised he wanted to partake in it, many knowing that the bat-themed crimefighter had suffered a great loss during the winter season, though none of them had asked about it. But they didn't ask him why he wanted to join in, though it was a rather big deal that the Dark Knight himself wanted to partake in the Super Hero Helpers day. "Hmm," he hummed, unsure of what to get Midnight Hope. He didn't know her that well outside of her doing a few missions with some of the others, but he had never personally teamed up with her.
He found her talking to Green Lantern before seeing her fall into thought and she then stood up. "Hey, GL," she said, using her ring to call him. "I'm going to head to Odym."
"Sounds good," GL's voice came over the line. "Just be careful."
"Will do," she promised before seeing Batman come up to her.
"Midnight, apologies for eavesdropping, but I was wondering if you wouldn't mind me tagging along with you to Odym," he said.
She blinked, surprised. "Um, sure," she said, shrugging. "I don't mind."
Though curious, she didn't read much into it as she checked to see her ring was charged. "I can fly us there," she offered.
"Actually, I have my own ride," he said politely. "And it has room for a passenger."
She was surprised again, but nodded. "Okay," she said before smiling. "Green Lantern told me that you built your vehicles from scratch. Is that true?"
"Yes," he said. "A good crimefighter needs vehicles that will do the job."
Midnight Hope smiled. "Alright, I'm curious now," she said as he led her to his plane. As soon as they were both strapped in, Batman began flying for Odym, following Lea's directions. "Have you been to Odym, Batman?" She asked.
"It's going to be my first time," he admitted. "I've been to Oa, but not the other Lantern home planets."
"Odym is very beautiful, just like Oa," the young heroine said. "Very peaceful too."
It wasn't long before they landed, but just as they did, an alarm rang out on Batman's sensors. "Something's up ahead," he said.
Midnight Hope powered up her ring, looking around carefully, but everything seemed quiet. She then thought for a moment. "It feels...too quiet," she said.
She then saw something coming towards them. "Look out!" She warned, throwing up a shield construct. The item bounced off the shield, but the person behind the attack soon revealed themselves.
Batman's eyes narrowed. "Mongul!" He cried out.
Lea's eyes widened. "Who's Mongul?" She asked, keeping the shield up.
"A dangerous alien who rules over a place called War World," the Caped Crusader said. "Think like an intergalactic gladiator ring with no rules."
"Oh, boy," she said in worry as she braced herself, keeping the shield up. "Do you think he followed us?"
"Could have, but I'm not going to ask," Batman said before looking at Mongul. "Why are you here, Mongul?" He asked the villain.
The alien grinned. "You know me, Batman. I look for good fighters for my world," he said before looking at Midnight Hope, who started to get a bad feeling about this, a bad feeling that only grew with Mongul's next words.
"And I want the Blue Lantern."
Uh-oh! Is Mongul going to capture Batman and Midnight Hope? Read on. :)
And please leave a review, but no flames!
