"Sir, there's a news report on about people with rays guns fighting monsters in Sunnydale, California." Major Carter reported to General Hammond.
"That name sounds familiar." He said.
"A year and a half ago, there was a newspaper report about the Mayor of Sunnydale, California dying in a supposed chemical attack." Dr. Jackson said.
"And we were speculating that it might have to do with the NID." Colonel O'Neill added.
"Go, investigate and remember, we have no jurisdiction off this base, try not to step on any toes, Colonel."
Waiting until the General was out of the room, Colonel O'Neill complained. "Why does he always say that to me?"
"No comment." Major Carter said, trying not to smile.
"Because you can be like a bull in a china shop, Jack." Daniel didn't have to worry about his rank if he said something.
Riley Finn was reporting his encounter with the other group to Dr. Walsh.
"I ran into that other group, ma'am. They refused to recognize my authority. They insisted there are no circumstances where special orders can be issued to any U. S. military personnel to operate outside their bases. They also said, they have a right to protect themselves. And they're far better equiped then we are. My blaster barely did any damage to one of the HST, but one of the girls fired a gun, that shot a ball of hot light straight thru the HST. And they have communicators that fit in their ears."
"I'll talk to my supervisor, have him check again, but he was certain there were no other groups assigned to deal with these creatures. In the meantime, keep an eye out, Captain."
"Yes, ma'am."
"Good work with that scream, Oz." Alexander complimented his friend.
"I just used a sound amplifier to mimic the average frequency of a human voice. I did a test using a CD, but that didn't work. The frequency was too subdued. So I ran thru different modulations until I found one that did work."
"It is so different when you use multiple words." Corda said.
"That's our Oz, accept no substitutes." Faith joked.
"Aside from the newest round of weird demons to hit Sunnydale, we ran into another issue." Alexander said, getting serious. "The guy Buffy's been spending some time with? Turns out, he's U.S. Army claiming to be here under special orders, which Jonno pointed out, isn't legal. Not that he seemed to understand that."
"He also tried to arrest us." Faith said. "Which we pointed, he can't legally do either."
"So either he's delusional and only thinks he's in the military or he's working here under illegal orders." Giles summed up.
"Well, he's got an awfully big, not very useful blaster for someone possibly delusional." Faith observed. "He used it on one of the demons and all it did was push it back a little bit."
"Well, we've seen weird science before. The Epps build a girl project and the coach mutating the swim team." Buffy said.
"Yeah, I remember you guys telling me about them. Sick." Johnathan said.
"Well, for now all we can do is keep an eye on these people and hope whatever they're doing doesn't blow up in our faces." Giles said and with murmured agreements, everyone scattered.
SG 1 landed in Vanderburgh Air Force Base and were directed to a car they could use.
"If we have time, I'd like to stop at the headquarters of a company based here is Sunnydale." Major Carter said. "They've recently registered and published some extremely interesting and sophisticated computer programs."
"What's this company called?" Colonel O'Neill asked, as he drove toward Sunnydale.
"The Altimah Project."
"Altimah is Latin for helpful." Daniel noted. "And I'd like to stop and see some people that live here too. A Dr. Rupert Giles and his assistant, Alexander Harris. Dr. Giles consults for the British Museum, who sponsor digs all over the world. They've published several very interesting translations that could reference the Ancients and the Gou'ald."
"Busy little town. Might explain why the NID might be interested in setting up shop here." O'Neill commented. "We should be there before long. Where were these people shooting ray guns seen at, Major?"
"Near the University of California, Sunnydale campus."
"Then let's find the campus."
Once they arrived, the three got out and started walking around.
"Excuse me?" Colonel O'Neill asked a passer by. "Can you help me out? I heard some people were fighting with ray guns on campus. I was wondering if there was a movie being filmed here?"
"Not that I know of, but I heard it happened over by Edmund Hall." And directed him in that direction. They were surprised to see two young men in fatigues.
"And who are you two?" Colonel O'Neill asked. They both saluted when they saw his insignia and uniform.
"Captain Riley Finn, U.S. Army, sir."
"Lt. Graham Miller, sir."
"Now why would the Army send a Captain and a Lieutenant to investigate anything? Especially out of official uniform."
"We're not investigating anything, sir. We here under special orders for a special project."
"There is no legal way you could have such orders, Captain. What are these orders?"
"You're not in my need to know, sir. I can't tell you. And why do people keep saying our orders are illegal?"
"Who else told you your orders are illegal?"
"A group of civilians, sir."
"Civilians firing ray guns?"
Riley frowned, was Dr. Walsh wrong? Did the Air Force have a group working here? "Yes, sir. I tried to get them to surrender their weapons, but they refused to."
"Because this isn't a police state and you had no legal right to issue such an order. Who's your commanding officer, Captain?"
"Dr. Maggie Walsh, sir."
"Wait here, Captain, Lieutenant, I'm going to report to my General."
"Yes, sir."
"Yes, sir."
