As Colonel O'Neill and SG 1 minus Teal'C, who unfortunately, had to stay behind at Cheyenne Mountain, arrived at the library of Sunnydale High School, which hadn't been hard to find, they heard a young man's voice say. "You translated that word wrong, Giles. In this context, avenio, means reach, not arrive, as in to reach a destination."
"You're right. Damn, I'm better with Greek."
"Yeah well, Latin is pretty much native for me, you know that."
"True."
"Sounds like we've found the people you're looking for, Danny." Jack said and pushed open the doors to the library. The two people in the library immediately went on alert when they saw military personnel enter the library. The younger one actually appeared to be at attention. Interesting.
"Hi, I'm Colonel Jack O'Neill, this is Major Samantha Carter and this is Dr. Daniel Jackson. We were in the area checking something out and now that we've finished our business, Danny here, wanted to meet a Dr. Rupert Giles and discuss some translations."
"Dr. Daniel Jackson? The Dr. Daniel Jackson that speculated that the Egyptian pyramids are older then current accepted academic belief would place them?" The older man asked.
"They are older." The younger man. "I don't know why people refuse to believe the evidence. Even carbon dating of artifacts found in them is older then accepted belief."
"People believe as they wish to believe, you know that, Alexander."
"I know, not that it really makes any sense. Facts are facts, why refuse to accept them? Being open minded is supposed to be a trait of humans."
"In many cases, it is. But in some cases, when someone of perceived authority makes a statement, others wish to believe, then their conclusion is considered the correct one. Only time can change such perceptions and beliefs."
"Annoying, but true. Anyway, he's Dr. Giles, but we just call him Giles, which he doesn't object to because of something called Rupert Bear in England, where he's from. I'm Alexander Harris."
"Alexander Harris of the Altimah Project?" Sam asked.
"Yes, I'm the CEO of the company."
"At your age?" Jack asked.
"The company was founded by three nineteen years olds and a twenty year old, when we were eighteen and nineteen. My girlfriend is the Chief Financial Officer and our business partners are both geniuses. One is really good with computers and programs and the other with mechanics. The two of them do the work, Corda manages the books and I keep everyone on track and make sure they and their work are protected. With patents, copyrights, proper registering, etc. We're not yet in a position to manufacture anything we put out there, but we'll get there. Rushing will only cause us to stumble."
"I'm very interested in some of the programs your company has recently put out. They're very well done and very sophisticated." Sam said, excitedly. "I'm hoping to find a place in my budget so I can add some of the programs to my department."
"Then Corda is the person you need to talk to in order to negotiate a price. Jonno, sorry, Johnathan Levinson, is the person to talk to about the programs themselves. Do you have time today?"
"We have a couple of hours before we need to head back. You can play with the other kids, Carter."
"Yes, sir. Thank you, sir. Where's your headquarters?" Sam asked Alexander.
"We don't actually have one yet. We each work out of our homes and meet here in the library when we want to discuss business related issues. Since I help Giles with translating, it's convenient. My girlfriend has class right now, but will be here in about an hour. Jonno is at home, I can call him."
"Please do."
Alexander called Johnathan, who agreed to come over and talk to Sam. They kind of got lost in their conversation and didn't notice when Corda arrived. Daniel and Giles were also lost in their conversation.
"Ma'am, my girlfriend is here." Alexander got Sam's attention.
"Major Samantha Carter, this is Cordelia Chase, we call her Corda. Corda, I overheard Sam here tell Jonno, she's Dr. Samantha Carter, PHDs in theoretical astrophysics and a couple other things. She's interested in negotiating a price for some of the Altimah Project's programs for use in her department."
"Which ones?" And the two of them were off as well.
"Colonel, it's nice to see some military personnel who don't think they own the world and can order civilians around."
"You run into some military that thought that?" Jack wondered if these kids had anything to do with the monster and ray guns story.
"We were testing a prototype for a stun weapon we've been working on." Alexander hedged a bit. "We ran into a Captain Riley Finn, U. S. Army, who tried to arrest us and confiscate our prototypes. He claimed he was here under special orders and had authority for his actions. When we protested, he backed down. We haven't seen him since."
"Yeah well, that's because he's been arrested for his actions. I can't tell you anything because it's an on going investigation."
"No problem, Colonel, as long as he's not causing problems for people, especially people who matter to me, it's no concern of mine." Intensely curious and intending to do some checking himself.
"Carter? You ready to go?"
"Yes, sir. I think we've negotiated a fair price that fits into my budget. I'll present it to General Hammond when we get back."
"And you Danny? You get what you want?"
"Yes, Dr. Giles and Alexander may be able to do some consulting work for us as well. I'll talk to General Hammond about it when we get back."
"Then I say, we've had an excellent trip and it's time to head back."
