Hello, and welcome! I'm Shocklance and thanks for stopping by! This has been a story I've had in mind for a very long time and I'm excited to finally be posting it! Just a quick note or two I started working on this tale long before the Clear Card Arc so anything to do with that won't be making an appearance in this story. Second, it's based off the anime so keep that in mind. Also expect some sci-fi elements as it will be set in the year 2195, nothing to crazy to take away from the magical girl aspect of the story, but it will be there. There will be girl x girl relationships in this story, but if you've read some of my other work you'll know this is nothing new for me.
I'll put the usual disclaimer, I don't own Card Captor Sakura in any shape or form, you know the drill.
Please leave a review if you feel like it, I really do appreciate it! And don't be afraid to drop me a message if you have any questions! With that said let's get right into it!
Prolog: Saying Goodbye
The old woman stood by the side table with her hands clasped in front of her waist. Her green eyes locked on an old photograph taken some sixty years ago when she had been in her early twenties. Despite being in her mid-eighties she didn't look much older than sixty. Having magic had its perks. A gentle smile crossed her age worn face as she reminisced about good memories surrounded by her friends in what had been much happier times. But that had been so long ago and those times could never come again. Many of those who stood surrounding her in that photo were gone now. Syaoran, Meiling, Kaho, all passed on from this world. Besides herself only Eriol and Tomoyo were left of her human friends, and of the two she hadn't spoken to one of them in those sixty years. Her regret for that weighed heavily on her shoulders. The blame for the rift that had driven them all apart was her responsibility and hers alone. It was a sin she could never atone for.
"What are you up to?" The old woman didn't flinch, she had sensed the speaker's presence as he had come up behind her. She turned to face the small being floating in the air behind her. He looked like a stuffed animal, which was the form he preferred to be in for a number of reasons. Convenience being one of them, his true form made it hard to move around the house.
"Just thinking about old times Kero." She regarded him for moment before asking a question. "Tell me my friend, all those years ago, did I do the right thing?" Kero knew exactly what she was talking about of course, how could he not? What other event could his friend and master be asking about, the one that had haunted her for most of her life.
"Well, you know that's not really the sort of thing I'm good at answering. That's more of something Yue would have an answer for." The being who went by Kero rubbed the back of his head with one of his stuffed animal like arms.
"I've tried asking him, several times in fact. And always his answer is the same. That it is not his place to question my decisions or pass judgement on me after I became his master."
"Yeah, that sounds like something he would say." Kero said with a bit of a sigh. The old woman turned and slowly walked towards the large comfy looking chair in the center of the living room, Kero followed along behind her.
"Please Kero, I need to know. Was there something I could have done different? Could I have prevented us from all drifting apart?" Kero crossed his arms and bowed his head, racking his brain trying to find a response.
"I think you did what you felt was right. You said yourself at the time that you couldn't bring yourself to choose if it meant hurting one or the other. What happened afterward happened, you know there's no going back and fixing it, even with Return. Messing with time isn't a good idea, Eriol told you that once if I remember correctly."
"I suppose that is as good of an answer as I'm likely to get." She said with a sigh. She hadn't really expected an honest answer, not from either Kero or Yue. Kero because he wouldn't want to hurt her feelings and Yue, well, because he kept things to himself. She could always ask Eriol she supposed, but he would most likely be his usual cryptic self. And as for asking Tomoyo, well, that was out of the question. Truthfully, deep in her heart she already knew the answer. Not that it did her or anyone any good at this point. It was far too late to fix things. All that was left was regret.
She sat down and leaned back into the chair, closing her eyes and letting the memories wash over her. She looked up as she sensed her other companion walking into the room, dressed in white and blue robes with long flowing white hair to match. His most striking feature however was the pair of large white bird like wings that sprouted from his back.
"How are you today?" He asked of the old woman.
"As well as can be expected Yue, how about yourself?"
"I am fine." Yue nodded his head at his mistress. "I have the book and the cards as you requested." He held out a red and gold book which the woman gently took from him.
"Thank you, Yue." She said as she opened up the book. Inside were a stack of cards which she removed and flipped through silently, smiling the entire time. Kero and Yue watched silently as she did, unsure what to make of their Mistress's behavior. When she was done she put the cards back in the book and gently closed it. "I want to thank the both of you, for sticking by my side all these years, for being there for me."
"That is our duty." Yue said.
"Yeah, you don't need to thank us for something like that." Kero added.
"But I do. I know it hasn't always been easy, I just wanted you two to know how much I've appreciated your companionship." Yue and Kero looked at each other with unease in their hearts. They had once had a conversation like this before, a very long time ago. They had known it would come one day with her, but it wasn't something they had liked to think or talk about. "It's something I had to say before we part." She gave them a soft smile and pressed on before they could interrupt. "My time in this world is almost up. I've seen it, thanks to Dream, and I confirmed it with Eriol."
"You're going to seal us away, aren't you?" Yue asked as he turned away.
"I am, it's what must be done."
"But you'll be all aloneā¦" Kero began to say.
"No, Eriol will be here later today. He promised to stay with me till the end." She looked at the saddened faces of her friends. "It'll be alright, I promise you. I'll be with everyone again after all. Maybe I'll be able to make amends finally." She placed her hand on top of the book which began to glow with a blinding white light and beneath the chair a glowing circle full of strange runes and other symbols appeared, spiraling outward. "I hate doing this to you, truly I do. But you both know why I must seal you and the cards away. Goodbye my friends, I love you both. But first some parting words, some advice. Kero, when you find the next candidate to be master of the cards, don't hold back anything from them like you did with me. I know you meant well, but they will need to know what they are up against" She then turned and addressed Yue. "Yue, my friend, I know you will most likely not take this to heart, but I will say it anyways. When you next pass judgement for who will be the next master, try not to be so harsh, and don't be afraid to let them in. You will both need each other." With that she closed her eyes and completed her spell.
"Sakura!" Kero cried out, but the light overwhelmed both him and Yue and when it cleared they were gone. On the front cover of the book the face of a winged lion had appeared before a blazing sun and on the back a moon with a balancing scale sat where there had been nothing a minute ago. Sakura Kinomoto, master of the Sakura cards and book of Clow got up and went to the basement of the house she had grown up in and lived her entire life. There she went to one of many bookshelves that dominated the space and placed the Book of Clow where she had found it when she was only ten, literally a whole lifetime ago. A life that had gone nothing like she had expected or wanted it too.
Suddenly a gentle glow came into existence behind her, causing Sakura to glance at her watch. She had been expecting this of course. That in part was the reason for sealing Kero and Yue away, this encounter was one for her and her visitor alone. Much depended on that. As the glow faded away, she turned from the bookcase to face her guest.
"Right on time." She said to her visitor, who frankly looked rather confused. "I'm sure you have many questions for me. Why don't we go upstairs and I'll make a pot of tea?"
With that the prolog comes to a close! I know it wasn't very long, but I do hope it was enough to wet your appitite for the story to come! I already have the next chapter ready to go and plan to release it a week from now so stay tuned!
Next Chapter: Megumi Ishida, a quiet young girl takes a shortcut back home after school comes across an old abandoned house and finds a certain book in the basement. An event that will change her life forever!
Till then, this is Shocklance, signing out.
