Before I start the chapter, I wanted to respond to someone who pointed out a small error.
Anoynim: My main language is Portuguese(BR). "Stolen" and "Broken" kind of mean almost the same thing here, so I ended up putting "Stolen". I've fixed that error though, thanks for pointing it out :)
If you notice any errors, please point them out to me. I don't have a beta reader, so even if I proofread, some things may slip through.
Chapter 2 - Goddess Hestia - Rose Fannett
Goddess Hestia.
The Greek goddess of the fireplace, the home, domestic life, and hospitality, as well as being the sacred goddess of fire. She was well known among the gods for having chosen to remain a virgin, thus being one of the three virgin goddesses.
She recently descended into the mortal world, staying at the mansion of her old friend, Hephaestus, staying with her for about a little over a month, when Hephaestus decided to kick her out of her mansion. This was because Hestia was quite lazy (and some other reasons), although she showed some animation to find someone for her Familia.
Even though she begged, saying she had no place to go, Hephaestus didn't back down. However, she didn't leave Hestia with nothing, after all she mentioned an abandoned Church and said she could live there. Although the place was not very nice, it was far from really being a bad place to live. With a little money it is possible to repair the place to make it more "livable".
The problem is the money.
How would she get the money to repair the abandoned church, or to find a new place to live? It was impossible for her to get the money to repair the church or to buy a small house for her to live in, after all, she doesn't make that much money from her work.
Yes, she is a working goddess.
Currently she is in a stall selling Jagamarukuns. It is a kind of potato chip. It took her a while to get this job, it doesn't pay that well, but at least she gets money to buy food. The salary she receives is fixed at a price, but it can be higher if she always sells more than expected by her boss, so she always tries to attract all the people passing by to buy at least one Jagamarukun.
Of all the customers she received, there was one in particular who always bought many Jagamarukuns whenever she came by. A blonde woman who was related to Loki.
She took a bag of 10 Jagamarukuns and gave it to the customer. This little movement made her long hair swing a lot.
"Here, thanks for buying, come again often." Hestia gave a smile to the woman who just reciprocated by sending her own smile before leaving.
Hestia let out a sigh before the smile on her face disappeared completely. It was about time she left. Today was quite profitable compared to the other days. Maybe luck was finally catching up with her? Who knows, maybe she would soon get the first member of her Familia.
Since she is a new goddess, people don't want to enter her Familia. They would rather try to get into a better known Familia like the Loki Familia or the Freya Familia. Just the thought of those two goddesses makes her angry. All the people she tried to invite into her Familia refused her because she was an unknown goddess. She was very irritated by this, although she understood their reasoning. But couldn't they at least give her a chance? It's so unfair...
"Okay, I guess that's enough," she muttered before getting ready to leave.
She was about to let her boss know she was leaving, when she suddenly heard a male voice.
"Excuse me."
Looking up, she saw a man wearing an unusual pink/red suit, green/blue pants, hands in his pockets as he maintained a calm countenance without any expressions. He calmly started walking to the tent where she was standing, and it didn't take long for him to come face to face with the goddess.
"Eh, can I help you? I was about to leave because my shift is over, but I can sell you some Jagamarukuns before I leave."
She was not going to complain that a new customer showed up moments before she left. Any purchase was welcome for her. Besides, looking closely...
'He's quite handsome,' she thought. It's not like she was falling in love at first sight or anything, it was just a fact, but she wasn't going to say that to someone she just met.
"Oh, I don't want to buy anything," he couldn't afford it, after all. "I'm curious about something. You are a goddess, right?"
Although he knew she is a goddess, there wasn't much of a problem asking this way.
At this moment, Hestia began to get suspicious. Would he make fun of her for being a working goddess? Looking more closely at the handsome man, she saw that the expression on his face didn't change one bit. His tone of voice also came out completely calm, he didn't seem like the kind of person who liked to pick on or make fun of others, so she answered without much trouble.
"Yes, I am the goddess Hestia."
"Kiyotaka Ayanokouji, it is a pleasure to meet you, Hestia."
He tried to give her a little greeting, although she noticed that he didn't seem to know exactly how to do that. Well, at least he seemed to be quite polite. She began to feel a little bad at the thought that he might be one of the idiots who showed up from time to time to make fun of her when they found out she was a goddess. These people annoyed her deeply, making her wonder if they had nothing better to do besides venture into the Dungeon.
Well, if he didn't come to make fun of her, she might as well have a little chat with him. I wonder what Familia he is part of?
"It is also a pleasure to meet you, Ayanokouji-kun. But if you haven't come to buy anything, what do you want?"
"To talk with you, I suppose. You see, I'm new in town, I arrived today, so I'm without any money with me at the moment. Could you know of a place where I could stay for at least 1 night for free? I'll try to manage after that."
At that moment, Ayanokouji swore he saw Hestia's hair stand up for a brief moment, causing him to look at her curiously. It wasn't long before she quickly approached him and grabbed his blazer with some curious force. He saw her eyes sparkle in some hope.
She spoke again in a more animated and hopeful voice.
"You are new in town, so you are not part of any Familia, right!?"
"Exactly."
The stage was projected.
"Would you like to be part of my Familia? Although the place I stay is not that nice, it is quite spacious. If you join, you can live with me as long as you want until you can afford to move out."
Ayanokouji was curious about her proposal. He was already expecting her to invite him to join her Familia, however, that last part she said is interesting. From what he read from the book, Hestia's personality seemed a little different from what was shown in the book. He expected her to say something a little different, such as suggesting that if he moved out, he would have to take her along as well.
He asked the question that would confirm what he wanted to know.
"I would have to think for a moment. But first of all, how many people do you have in your Familia?"
The moment he asked that, Hestia froze for a few seconds before she looked away a little. Looking a little embarrassed, she struggled to speak her next words which came out as a small whisper, which fortunately he was able to hear with little effort.
"Eh, well... I don't have anyone in my Familia yet, so you would be the first..."
'So he hasn't shown up yet,' Ayanokouji thought. Although he was already almost certain of it due to his conversation with Shakti, a confirmation can never be too much. Now he is completely sure that the protagonist has not yet arrived.
But one question still lingered in his mind.
He is ahead of the protagonist by how much time?
"I see, in that case, how about we do it this way. You let me sleep in your quarters tonight while we talk about me joining your familia, how about that?"
Ayanokouji doubted that he was that far ahead, or rather, he wanted to believe it. Being years before the main story begins is not ideal, even more so with Freya gaining a possible small interest in him. The person responsible for sending him to this place must be a bored god who is looking for entertainment, so it is likely that he wants to see changes in the main story.
"In that case, let's go!" Hestia quickly grabbed his arm with animation. "It's not too far from here, but I warn you already that the place might not be so comfortable for you."
Hestia believed that that suit he was wearing was expensive, so he might be someone rich-even if he says he's out of money at the moment. If she is honest, she really feels uncomfortable about wanting to show him where she lives, because she was afraid that he would refuse to join her familia just because she is poor.
She couldn't back down, a golden chance appeared in front of her. If this man was really someone rich, then if he joined her familia, she could finally leave that abandoned church. No matter what, she had to get this man into her Familia, who knows when another chance like this will appear.
"It doesn't really matter, I'm sure regardless of how the place is, I've been in worse situations. Besides, I'm not a fan of fancy places, even if I had the wherewithal to stay in those same places."
With his answer, Hestia concludes that he is definitely someone who must possess a lot of money, or else possess valuable objects. And this only became even clearer when she caught a small glimpse of the ring full of precious pieces with a large green jewel in the middle, just as he took his hand out of his pocket. However, he quickly put his hand in his pocket again. She was able to see all those precious stones, a ring that must be worth a fortune...
She definitely has to bring it!
"In that case, let's go! Boss, I'm leaving!" She didn't wait for an answer, she just asked Ayanokouji to follow her.
He just nodded and started following Hestia.
Everything went according to plan.
I am currently walking next to Hestia. Most likely to the Abandoned Church described in the book, where she and the protagonist live.
"So where are you from, Kiyotaka-kun? May I call you that?"
"I don't think you know where I'm from, it's a very distant place. As for my name, I don't mind."
When I introduced myself to Hestia, I put my first name in front. Apparently, that's the way they do it here. Unlike in Japan, people here probably don't mind being called by their first name, which made me a little relieved. I mean, I never understood why first names should only be used with people very close to you in Japan, after all in other countries it is not important. But I didn't do this when I introduced myself to Shakti.
Also, I finally confirmed that the protagonist has not yet arrived in town. Well, at least I believe he hasn't. After all, if he has arrived, it means that he has joined another Familia, or else he hasn't found one yet. I am willing to believe that he has indeed not arrived yet, which means that the main story may be far from or close to beginning, depending on how long it will take him to get to town.
"So, Kiyotaka-kun! So, a very distant place, eh. You know I'm a goddess, right? I've been living for many years. So it's normal to assume that I know many places."
"I'm sure of that. But I'm really confident that you don't know the place where I come from, so there's no point in talking about it."
As we walked along, I noticed the gazes of some people being directed at us. I was confident that the stares were directed at me; they were probably wondering about my clothes, which apparently must be a little unusual in this place. I don't think a suit is really unusual in this place, but the color of the suit was what probably caught people's attention.
"Okay, then I won't ask any more."
She gave me that answer and I thanked her. We were silent from then on.
It was almost completely dark by now.
I still had my hands in my pockets, hiding the ring in my hand. I made a scene to show the ring to Hestia, just to make her more confident about me. Even though I don't have any money on me at the moment, she must think that I have valuable objects on me, and I do indeed, although I don't plan to part with them.
I have not yet given up on living a normal life, working in a normal job, with a possible normal wife in the future.
But now it was important to lay the groundwork. I have no money and I didn't plan to get rid of any of my stuff. And to work anywhere, I would first have to have a better knowledge of this world. Not only the economy, but several other things must be different, so getting a job without at least basic knowledge is foolish to say the least. I mean, I could make several mistakes by not having a basic knowledge.
Then comes the question.
How can I make money while I still don't have enough knowledge to get a regular job?
The answer is pretty obvious: Become an Adventurer.
This was something I couldn't escape for many reasons besides getting money. A perfect example is that I need to protect myself. Most people come to this city with the goal of becoming an adventurer, entering the Familia of some god and receiving their blessing, Falna.
Even if I was confident enough that I would not lose to anyone in my world, this is a totally different case. The people of this world, unlike my world, get strength through the Falna. It is basically like one of those role-playing games where you have to level up, and every level you get in the game, the stronger you get.
Here it's not so different, except that leveling up seems to be quite a challenge. The protagonist took just over a month to level up to level two, and the person who rose the fastest before him took a whole year. With this information, it is already clear how challenging it is for someone to level up.
Along with the fact that there are several level three and four people in this city. Briefly speaking, many people greatly surpass me in terms of strength, agility, and other things in this world. This also means that my abnormal strength for someone my age is not that uncommon in this place. If it were in my world, I would probably just be surprised that there were people with better abilities than mine, but in this place it is different.
My luck has never really been good.
I am not so naive as to think that the "entity" responsible for putting in this world did it to fulfill my desire to live a peaceful life. He or she, whoever is responsible for my current situation, is planning something big. And I have to be ready for any unexpected situation.
If I don't have the necessary strength to protect myself from any unexpected situation that might appear in front of me, then I could be in serious danger. Even if I didn't plan to become completely obsessed with getting stronger, trying to level up as quickly as possible, I should at least be strong enough to handle "basic" things.
Even if there were several people who surpassed me in strength and other statistics in this world, there is one thing that I can confidently say that no one in this place is better than me. Something that was only possible thanks to my past within the White Room.
Knowledge.
My vast knowledge in many areas, especially in the martial arts. I have been trained in every type of martial art one could think of. Martial arts that probably don't even exist in this world. So, putting all this together, I can say with confidence that probably no one is better than me in combat techniques.
Of course, if a person is at a very high level, even if I possess a vast knowledge about the human body, as well as where to hit deadly blows, it won't do any good if my opponent is not able to feel any damage thanks to his extremely high level.
But... maybe, just maybe I will be able to fight someone who has at least one level above me. This is just speculation, of course. However, in this town people become adventurers to fight monsters created within the walls of the Dungeon (although there are monsters outside as well, but they are weaker than the versions born inside the Dungeon), so I can assume that at least most adventurers don't have that much experience facing another human being. In addition, there is also the surprise factor.
After all, fighting a human being - technically intelligent - is quite different than fighting a creature that has no intelligence at all, right?
"Kiyotaka-kun, we have arrived."
Hestia's voice snapped me out of my monologues.
"Huh."
I actually got a little lost in my own thoughts. How long had it been since we started walking?
I looked back at the place where we stopped. The sight I saw was of an Abandoned Church in pieces on the outside. The wood was clearly quite old, which added to the feeling of a place that had been abandoned many years ago. I examined the place for some time before concluding.
At least it is not beyond repair, I think.
"So...what do you think?"
She asked with clear discomfort on her face. I think she's embarrassed to show the place where she lives, but in my opinion, it's really no big deal. I just decided to take her worries away.
"A pitiful place indeed," I commented, causing her to look down. "However," she looked up again, "as I said, I've been in worse situations. Besides, this place can be repaired with some money, right?"
"Yes!" She exclaimed cheerfully and then grabbed my arm. "Come on, get in!"
There was no one else around, so I saw no point in hiding the ring that was in my hand. I just let the cheerful goddess drag me inside the Abandoned Church.
As soon as we entered, I was a little surprised. Although some things were falling apart, it was much less than the outside of the Church. The place was also quite spacious, containing some furniture - although most of it was already too old. If we throw all the "garbage" away, this could really be a place where a poor person would live.
There was a small area that was apparently used as a kitchen, and even a bathroom. She showed me all this with some trepidation, probably thinking that I would leave as soon as I had spent the night. Well, this was my plan initially, but after confirming that the protagonist is not here, my plan had to undergo some definite changes.
If Bell were here, I would reject any invitation she extended to me to join her Familia. The reason was quite simple: Attention.
Even in this place, I didn't plan on having unnecessary attention directed my way. Joining the same Familia that the protagonist is part of is basically like sending my plan to live a peaceful life to the bottom of the deepest ocean. Needless to say, I would probably receive such attention just for being part of the Familia of the person who is going to break the record for leveling up.
It is for this very reason that the Loki Familia and the Freya Familia are completely out of the question. Both are goddesses of the two most powerful Familias of Orario. The mere fact that I enter either of these Familias is a draw of attention for other people who are adventurers, especially those who have been rejected by these same Familias.
She made a point of showing me the whole Church, and I was not against it. After she finished showing me around, she took me to her "room" where she had a bed and a very old sofa located in the center of the room. Without wasting much time, I went to the couch and sat down, and so did she.
We stayed for a while in silence before she began to ask what I was expecting.
"Will you join my Familia?"
She was right next to my face with her hands together, as she made a very cute expression. Her eyes were sparkling with hope. She is pretty. I couldn't help but notice a "certain part" of her body very close to me, but I decided to ignore that for now.
Even if I rejected joining her Familia, I doubted that she would kick me out of this place. She seemed to be a very gentle goddess, unlike Freya, who was completely obsessed with the protagonist of this story. I closed my eyes for a brief moment and could feel the Goddess's gaze fixed on me.
Okay, time to begin.
"Before anything, there are a few questions I need to ask. As I said before, I'm new in town. Where I come from there are no gods or goddesses living with us, so I possess almost no information about these Familias So, before I decide to enter your familia, can you answer my questions? In return, you will also be able to ask some things for me."
"Sure! Ask anything you want!"
She was really very happy. Her movement made her hair sway a lot. Actually, now I am curious about something. The protagonist must have given her the hair ties she was wearing, or else she started wearing them later.
But why?
In my opinion, she looks better with loose hair.
Well, this is just an opinion because I have seen her illustration.
Pulling myself out of these thoughts, I returned to the main focus. I needed to be a little careful with my questions in case she ended up asking me something. She would know the moment I lied, and that was something I could not allow. A trusting relationship is the most important thing in this beginning.
Trust is something that is built over time, but at least in this conversation, I have to stay on her good side.
"Very well. I would like you to explain to me a little more about the Familias. While I know they are gods or goddesses who command a Familia and give a blessing called Falna to the people who are part of it, I wanted to know if there is something more to it."
"Familias, eh. Let's see..."
She made a thoughtful expression as she looked up, probably thinking about what she was going to say. She stayed like that for a few seconds and I was in no hurry. She finally started to speak.
"To explain about this, I think it's good to talk a little about us gods. In our world, as you already know, there are several gods and goddesses, and many years ago, of them decided to come to live among mortals. Some have a public identity, others prefer to live in anonymity. The gods who decide to live among mortals are forbidden to use their powers, called Arcanum, except for one: the ability to give a blessing to mortals."
There was a short pause before she continued.
"These days, almost everything revolves around the Dungeon, a large complete dungeon that exists in this city. Thousands of people enter the Dungeon every day looking for adventures, as inside there are various monsters and hidden treasures that can be retrieved and exchanged for other goods outside, the most common being money. Being an adventurer is practically a profession these days."
Although she was saying what I technically already knew, there was some interesting additional information.
"Since it is very dangerous to enter the dungeon alone the adventurers gather into Familias, each headed by a god. The familia members receive the god's blessing, in return they are responsible for keeping everything running and increasing their status. Adventurers are ranked by levels and gain attributes as they reach new levels, the higher the level the more prestige their familia gains. There are god familias in everything from medical familias to criminal familias."
She finished her explanation.
I see, so there are also familias of criminals. I had already expected that.
"These criminal familias are run by criminal gods too, right?"
"Yes."
"I see. So, do you have any questions for me?"
"Huh?" she looked confused.
"You answered my question, so I'll do that for you too."
I just hope it's not a problematic question.
"In that case, I have a question. Why don't you ever change your expression? Eh, I mean, since I met you you haven't changed your expression one bit, your tone of voice also seems to be the same. That's very strange, could you have a problem?"
She looked a little worried at the mention of the last part. It seems that she is really a kind goddess, huh. But why does the very first question have to be problematic? I thought seriously about what I was going to answer, after all I can't tell her any kind of lie. I answered immediately afterwards.
"You see, since I was a child I grew up in a rather complicated environment. I already had difficulty expressing myself back then, but growing up in this place only made it stronger. It's not that I want to be that way, but that's what I am, someone with difficulty expressing myself."
This kind of response should suffice. If she has a little conscience and thinks a little, she should understand that I don't want to go into details of my childhood. However, when I read the book, she would definitely be a person who would ask anyway, probably due to the fact that she doesn't notice that I don't want to go into details, or just due to the fact that she is concerned.
This answer will also serve for me to observe something.
"I see... well, do you want to ask something else?"
So she didn't insist, huh. Although her personality is similar to what is described in the book, there are some differences. It was quite interesting and curious. I was really interested in the real reason behind it, after all, what I have is just speculation.
"Is it possible for someone to leave or transfer familias? Oh, before you ask, I'm not planning to leave your familia in case I join, it's just a curiosity."
When I started my question, I saw her face turn a little somber, but after I mentioned that it was just a curiosity, she was happy again. She saw no lies in my words.
It was a truth, I had no plans to leave her familia when I got in.
Not yet.
The future is uncertain. Even I cannot say for sure what my plans for the future will be.
"Yes, it is possible. If you join a familia, you have to wait at least 7 months to be able to transfer to another familia. As for leaving a familia, well, if that is really what you want, then you have to be in a familia for 1 whole year. After that, the god can 'block' your Falna, taking you out of your familia."
So the gods blessing can be "blocked", huh.
After that, I asked about some things without much importance, just to quench my curiosity about this new world I find myself in. However, as the conversation came to an end, I decided to ask the question I was most curious about at the moment.
"Do you possess any twin sisters, Hestia?"
According to my knowledge of Greek mythology, Hestia does not possess a twin sister. However, I cannot use the knowledge about mythologies that I have in this world. After all, apparently Hephaestus is a woman in this world. Loki is also a woman. Honestly, I don't understand why the author switched the genders of these particular characters.
"Oh, twin sister?" She looked confused. "I have sisters, but I'm not a twin to any of them."
Then you really don't, huh. That just leaves a single question in my mind.
Who was the red-haired woman on the book cover?
She is extremely identical to Hestia. The particles of fire around her... Hestia is also a goddess who is related to fire in a way, right? In this case I have a theory. However, it might take a while before I can confirm it. For now, let's just finish the conversation and move on to the main subject.
"I see, that's all, I guess."
"So, are you going to join my familia?" she asked again, eyes gleaming in hope.
"Before I say that, there is something you have to know first. It's not really my wish to become an adventurer, I just want to live a normal life with a normal job, but as I told you before, I have no knowledge about this place. Before I can get a normal job, I need to learn some basic things. So as a way to earn money, becoming an adventurer at first is the only way."
"So...?"
"Allow me to join your famila, Hestia."
"Yes!"
She jumped for joy. She had tears in her eyes. She was really crying. I guess that must be very important to her, huh. She was afraid that I would reject her, so it's normal, I guess.
However, becoming part of her familia has entered my plans since I suspected that the protagonist had not yet arrived in this town. And when I got the confirmation that he was not in her familia, I simply grabbed the opportunity that fate presented me with.
The reason I chose to join her familia is simple.
It was the best option presented at the time.
The familia of a "technically unknown" goddess is perfect for someone who doesn't want to attract attention like me.
Hestia took my hand as she spoke quickly with great animation.
"Quick, quick! Come to bed and take off your clothes so I can deliver your Falna! Quick!"
This could be interpreted very wrongly if she did not mention the Falna and I am not aware of how the process works. The book summarized this part quite a bit, but didn't leave it out, as it is information that is technically quite important.
"Hold on, I'll be right there."
She dragged me along with her. Well, seeing her smile is really interesting. I wonder if I could smile this way had I grown up in a different environment. Probably, but there is no changing the past, I grew up and matured inside the White Room.
I moved toward the bed and took off my blazer and shirt.
Apparently, the god of a certain Familia has to use his own blood, piercing his hand with a needle, and then applying the blood to my back. Falna is the grace, sometimes called a blessing, given by gods and goddesses to members of their familia. Those with a falna can collect excelia to increase their status and become stronger. The gods gave falna to adventurers to bring heroes, and the first god to give a falna was Ouranos.
One of the things Hestia told me.
But there is something that really caught my attention from the not so important questions I asked her.
"The Dungeon is alive."
The Dungeon itself is alive. That information opens up several different kinds of possibilities.
"Okay, I'll start," her voice brought me back to my senses.
I just nodded and she began the process.
I heard her mumble some words that I was unable to understand. Soon after, I felt a liquid trickle down my back, and then came a strange sensation. I felt as if something in me was changing, making me "different". Probably thanks to Hestia's blessing.
That feeling stopped seconds later.
"Done!" She exclaimed with animation. "Hold on a moment, I'm going to transfer your 'statuses' to a sheet of paper and hand it to you."
The process of transferring my statuses to the sheet of paper took a few seconds. When I saw that the room had become too quiet I turned my face to look at Hestia, who was looking at the paper in her hands with an expression of surprise. She was holding the paper very close to her face.
"Is there a problem?"
My question brought her back to her senses.
"A-Ah, no! I mean, yes! You have two skills and your statuses are already a little high!"
She looked a mess as she tried to speak. My attention turned completely to the sheet of paper in her hands, now I was really curious.
"Here, look."
She handed me the sheet of paper.
I started to read what was on the sheet of paper.
Ayanokouji Kiyotaka.
Level 1.
Strength: I - 50
Endurance: I - 50
Dexterity: I - 50
Agility: I - 50
Magic: I - 50
Skills: PALMARIUS; Rewriter.
PALMARIUS:
-The perfection of a Masterpiece has no limits.
-Limits do not apply to the user.
-The more difficult the task, the greater the reward received.
Rewriter:
-The Fate of the world is uncertain. It is up to the user to rewrite it with his actions, either for better or for worse.
-Small actions result in small changes, big actions result in big changes.
This is my status. It is very similar to something you would find in a video game. More precisely a role-playing game that my classmates Ike and Yamauchi play. Also, I cannot help but look at my stats that were all at 50 with curiosity.
Coincidences can be bizarre, indeed.
"I'm assuming that's not a normal status, right?"
"Not at all. All people start with zero stats, but you are at 50 on all of them. That's not normal at all. Also, starting with one skill is extremely rare, although possible, but two!? You really have never been in a familia before, right?"
Hestia's voice was full of disbelief. I guess it really isn't normal, huh.
"No, I've never been in a familia before."
Hestia picked up the status sheet again as I finished reading. She seemed to be all over it again, again and again, as if she was trying to understand something incomprehensible. After doing this for some time, she let out a sigh and looked at me again. However, soon she cracked a cheerful smile.
"Who would have thought that the first member of the familia would be this amazing!? That's very lucky! Fate is finally shining on me!"
She celebrated happily.
"But, I have to ask. Can you have any idea what these two skills of yours are? It doesn't sound like anything you could use in a fight against the Dungeon monsters." She asked curiously as she handed me the sheet of paper again.
I stared at the sheet as I uttered my words.
"I have a few theories. The first ability, called PALMARIUS. Tell me, is there a limit on Falna's statuses?"
PALMARIUS means Masterpiece in Latin. So everything I did to achieve that title became a skill in this world? Interesting.
"Yes. Status points are classified into five categorizations as presented on the sheet: strength, endurance, dexterity, agility, and magic. These categories have different parameters divided into the letters of the human language alphabet. The classification of the parameters are; I: 0-99; H from 100 to 199, and so on until S whose values are from 900 to 999, 999 being the limit imposed by the Falna. The values of each category increase as the adventurer gains experience in combat and obtains excelia which increases its value in skill points, even skills and spells can be obtained depending on the experiences that an adventurer lives."
I fought a few Goblins before arriving in Orario, could this mean an increase in my status? But that doesn't explain why my statuses are all "perfect 50". Maybe it is an effect of the PALMARIUS skill? I think the description "The perfection of a Masterpiece has no limits" is responsible for that.
"One of the descriptions of the skill is '-Limits do not apply to the user.', it probably means that I can break those limits imposed by the Falna."
"That means you can become the most powerful of all adventurers!" Hestia exclaimed. "Wait, if any gods know about this, they would do everything they could to take you!"
"That would be problematic. Isn't it possible to hide these abilities?"
I really didn't want any god or goddess after me like a crazy person.
"Well, you need to show the status sheet to register as an adventurer. But it is possible to hide your skills yes."
"In that case, do that. I really don't want to draw anyone's attention with these two skills of mine."
I handed the paper with my status sheets to her. She did something before handing it to me again. I looked at the sheet and saw that the category showing skills had some kind of "error" in it. It wasn't very discreet, but it should suffice.
"If they ask, just say that I made a mistake when I was passing your statuses to the sheet," she warned.
"I'll do that."
I ended up not mentioning about the second skill, and she didn't ask about it, which I appreciate. However, I knew she was thinking about it when she threw me a few small glances, but she didn't say anything.
We were silent for a while before she broke with a question.
"...So, are you going to register as an adventurer now? The Guild is still open this hour."
"No. I'll do that tomorrow. I need information about the first few floors of the Dungeon first of all."
I didn't plan on killing myself inside the Dungeon with the goal of staying strong forever, I was just going to go in and stay longer at first to get some money, until I at least found a job after I learned what I needed about the differences in this world.
"In that case, when you go to register tomorrow, ask for a Guild advisor. He or she will help you with the Dungeon information you need."
"That is quite helpful. I will do that, thanks for the information."
"Aren't you sleepy, Kiyotaka-kun?" Hestia asked me.
"Uh? Not really, but I guess sleeping now wouldn't hurt."
I've run a lot in the last two days to get to this town fast.
"In that case let's sleep! My bed is big enough for both of us!"
What's with this goddess? She invites someone she met on the first day to sleep with her? In this world, she is still one of the three virgin goddesses, right?
"You shouldn't invite a man you just met to sleep with you, Hestia. I think it would be better if I slept on the couch."
"Oh? But you're part of my Familia now, what's wrong with sleeping together? You won't do me any harm, right?" She tilted her head in confusion.
"Of course not. But still, that's not right, where I come from people only sleep together if they have some greater intimacy, after they get to know each other well. I'm sleeping on the couch."
Actually, I'm more concerned about myself, so hopefully that half-truth will suffice.
She stared at me for a moment and then pouted.
"In that case, I can sleep on the couch. You sleep on the bed, which is more comfortable," she said.
"I refuse. I would not feel comfortable letting the 'owner' of the place sleep in the least comfortable place, even though I am now part of her familia."
"But-"
"I'm sleeping on the couch."
She stared at me again and I just reciprocated.
"Oh, okay, I was just trying to be nice to the first member of my familia, but why do you have to be so stubborn? Your face hasn't changed one bit either!"
"Excuse me for being born with such a boring face that doesn't change and has no beauty at all."
"I didn't say that! Your face is very beautiful!"
I really didn't expect such an outburst from her at my attempt to make a joke. I just stared at her as I watched her finger pointing at me after her scream. However, for some reason, her face started to turn red. She probably absorbed the words she said to me.
"E-eh, I say, you sure would be a lot prettier if you smiled!"
Too bad I have a hard time with that, then.
"I see," I stood up a little, "in that case, I think we'd better go to sleep, right?"
"I guess so..."
She was still a little embarrassed.
After a few last conversations, I got ready for bed. The couch wasn't very comfortable, but it wasn't very uncomfortable either. I've slept in worse conditions before, so it didn't matter much really.
I started to ponder a few things before going to sleep.
I had to get some money tomorrow. My school uniform is the only clothing I own, so when it is completely dirty, I need to have other clothing to replace my school uniform.
I also realize that relying entirely on Falna is not wise. It can take me years or even decades to reach a certain level. And this is something that doesn't make me very comfortable. Knowing that there are people who completely outnumber me and can kill me with little effort is not something to think lightly about.
I wouldn't be able to become strong as fast as the protagonist. So, I needed something that would make the level difference useless. And since I wouldn't be able to become strong quickly, what if I had something that would make other people "weaker"?
An idea crossed my mind.
Maybe it would be possible...
The problem would be getting such a thing, since although the actual price is not shown, it is said to be very expensive. I won't have the money to get such a thing by buying it legally.
Well, let's leave that aside for now.
"Kiyotaka-kun, first member of my familia, hehehe."
Looking over, I saw Hestia hugging a pillow while there was a smile on her face. I realized that she was already asleep, so she was probably dreaming.
"Just you wait and see, you damn dwarf with small breasts, I'm going to build a big familia..."
I was a little curious who she was talking about, but she hasn't mumbled anything since.
I just focused on sleeping when one last thing came into my mind.
The two abilities I possess.
PALMARIUS is probably something created thanks to me, but the second ability, Rewriter, is probably the work of the person who brought me into this world. I strongly believed this after remembering the descriptions they had on the skill.
-The Fate of the world is uncertain. It is up to the user to rewrite it with his actions, either for better or for worse.
-Small actions result in small changes, large actions result in large changes.
Rewrite the fate of the world based on my actions, eh. It seems that he or she really wants to see some changes from the original story...
I am very grateful to have had the chance to live a new life in this world. However, if this being thinks that he or she can use me as a source of entertainment, then I can only say that you have made a big mistake.
A mistake that you would deeply regret.
The Guild is an organization that runs the Familia within Orario and provides services to adventurers.
The Guild succeeded a group of people who fought the monsters in the dungeon without the Grace of God.
The Guild's main building is called the Pantheon. It is a large space with counters for adventurers to talk to their advisors and also has a trading area. There are also small meeting boxes where adventurers can talk one-on-one with their advisor without anyone hearing them. In addition, there is a library area.
The main goal of the Guild is to manage the monstrous threat created in the dungeon. In addition, the Guild purchases magic stones, drop loot and maps created by adventurers in the dungeon. The Guild also provides weapons and armor for new adventurers who are just starting out.
Guild staff also take on the role of advisors to adventurers, often suggesting how deep an adventurer should go in a dungeon according to their level and skills, as well as warning them about any special dangers of certain floors and how to prepare against them. A staff member can be responsible for one or more adventurers.
The Guild also has several branches outside of Orario, one of which is in Melen . The Melen branch oversees the port and controls the various trade goods coming in and out of Orario.
Every day several adventurers come to the Guild wanting to trade monster stones for Valis, and some come to register to become adventurers. The busiest time in the Guild is undoubtedly in the afternoon, as most adventurers are beginners and cannot spend much time inside the Dungeon.
The morning period is usually calm and without many problems.
Inside the Guild, a woman with long red hair and yellow eyes was in the reception area, taking care of the paperwork. There was a pair of wolf's ears of the same color as her hair on her head.
She is Rose Fannett, a woman of the Werewolf race and also an employee of the Guild. She was wearing the Guild uniform.
The standard Guild uniform is a set of black vest and pants with a long-sleeved white collared shirt underneath and a gray butterfly tie. The only distinguishing feature between the two genders is having black and brown boots for men and black shoes for women. Both male and female Guild staff are required to wear this uniform in the Guild.
Rose was also taking care of the work of two people. Because of some urgent matters, her co-workers Eina and Misha would only show up for work in the middle of the afternoon, leaving all their work until then to her, which made her quite angry. Even if it was for urgent matters, it is strange that both of them are not available at the moment.
She is not very angry with Eina, as the half-elf usually takes care of most of the paperwork, even hers sometimes. The biggest problem and reason for her anger was Misha. That lazy human always tries to get away from her work, leaving her paperwork to Eina most of the time. For that reason, she didn't doubt that Misha had come up with some convincing excuse just to not go to work at that time, since initially it was Misha who was going to take care of Eina's part of the work.
And if that was indeed the case, she vowed that Misha would face hell when he returned.
The Guild staff were working as usual, and not having many adventurers to attend to in the morning, they could have the luxury of a little rest at work. Some more than others. However, they were already preparing for the afternoon and evening movement, where they would have many duties to perform.
The minutes passed by, and without most people noticing, an hour and a half had passed.
It was already nine o'clock in the morning, more and more adventurers were beginning to show up. When Rose finally finished taking care of Eina and Misha's part, she finally thought she could get some rest to prepare for the afternoon. However, fate tends to be rather annoying most of the time.
The Guild doors were opened again, making her sigh as she prepared to welcome one more person.
A man, who was a little over 175 celch entered the Guild. He was wearing a rather elegant suit with an unusual color, brown hair and golden brown eyes while he had his right hand in the pocket of his green/blue pants. The mysterious person's aura around him was quite curious, gaining not only the attention of her and other Guild officials, but also of the few adventurers who were in the place at that moment.
The first thing that came to most people's minds was that he was some kind of merchant or simply a person with a lot of money. The whispers of the few adventurers were quite varied, some were curious about the man while others were frowning at him for some reason.
The man in question didn't seem to care about this, he just ignored the people and started walking calmly towards her. The most curious thing of all was that she was not able to hear the sound of his footsteps clearly. He didn't seem to be walking carefully, but rather normally, which earned the curiosity of the few people who noticed this.
When the man stopped in front of her, she was able to look at him more carefully. Those brown eyes looked like a very deep abyss, the man's indifferent expression made her a little wary in his presence. She noticed the gaze of her colleagues in their direction.
"Hello, my name is Rose Fannett. How can I help you?" She spoke in a strong voice.
This was the first time she had seen him in the Guild, so he must have been someone new in town, which contributed to her thinking he was some kind of merchant wanting to make some sort of deal with the Guild. This was not that unusual, various merchants showing up at the Guild from time to time looking for a deal.
When the man took a folded piece of paper out of his pocket where his right hand was, the first thing she paid attention to was the man's hand, where a golden ring filled with precious stones lay. She noticed that almost all the people who were looking at them widened their eyes.
She didn't miss the greedy look that a group of three adventurers was sending in the direction of the man's hand that contained the ring. She narrowed her eyes in the direction of the adventurers, hoping they would stop being so obvious and stop looking at them in this way.
She saw the man's eyes move a little to the side where the three adventurers were, but he quickly turned his attention back to her with the same indifferent expression on his face.
'He caught their glances,' she thought. However, wasn't he acting very calm?
The man finally opened his mouth to speak.
"I would like to register as an adventurer."
His voice came out in a very calm tone.
He really didn't seem to mind the stares the three adventurers were sending at them, so she just stopped paying attention to them as well.
"Ah, adventurer?"
So he was no merchant. Just like most people, he also wanted to become an adventurer, he probably came to the city just for that. She felt the urge to let out a small sigh, but held it back and looked at him again, only to see him looking at her with the same calm, expressionless look on his face.
"Wait a moment," she spoke as he nodded. After a while, she returned with a sheet of paper. "Although I assume that this paper with you is your status sheet, you still need to fill out the basic form since you are new. It's not at all time consuming, so I'm sure it's no problem, here take it."
She handed the sheet to him as he handed the status sheet to her. With that, he started putting the requested information on the paper while she looked at his status sheet with some curiosity.
'All his statuses are at 50?' she thought with some surprise. Even his magic was at 50, which she found quite strange, since he didn't possess any magic, so how is it possible that he has points in this area? 'Besides, what's that? A mistake?' She looked at a part that was all crossed out in black.
The part in black is a mistake my goddess made when she passed my statuses onto the sheet of paper."
He replied, as if he knew what she was thinking.
She just thanked him for the information. Still...
'What kind of god makes a mistake like that? His goddess must be pretty incompetent,' she thought harshly. However, it was none of her business.
After she finished looking at his status, she placed the sheet on the counter, waiting for him to finish filling out the form to register as an adventurer. She watched patiently, even if he was taking longer than expected. Maybe he had trouble understanding what was on the paper?
She scolded herself for not asking if he was literate, but just as she was about to offer him help, he finished filling out the form and handed it to her.
She just started to read the form.
Name: Kiyotaka Ayanokouji.
Race: Human.
Age: 16 years old.
Gender: Male.
Familia: Hestia.
History or Experience: Just a normal human that came from a distant place in search of a peaceful life.
'16 years old?' She was very surprised that he was that young. He looked 18-20 years old. 'Hestia familia? I've never seen this familia, is it new?' Even though she was a little confused by the fact that he had written, 'normal human', she ignored it and continued reading. She looked at the last part where she frowned.
"If you want to live a peaceful life, becoming an adventurer should be the last thing you do."
Faced with her statement, he just replied.
"Indeed. However, I don't have many choices, as I don't have any money with me at the moment. Becoming an adventurer is the only way to get money immediately."
"No money?" she raised her eyebrows. "I'm sorry, but it's hard to believe that you have no money when... you travel with this thing in your hand." She said as she looked at the ring on his hand. "Also, this suit you are wearing seems to be quite expensive as well."
It was really hard to believe that he is someone who has no money with him.
"I can't blame you for thinking so. However, this suit is the only clothing I was able to bring with me from the place I come from, besides, this kind of clothing is not that uncommon there, since several people wear a very similar suit. As for that ring on my hand... let's just say it was someone's gift, I'm not selling it just to get money."
Even with his answer, she couldn't help but be suspicious. 'Could he have stolen it?' That didn't seem to be the case. Even though his face showed no expression, she was confident that he was telling the truth, even if it was hard to believe.
"Right," she let out a sigh. It was none of her business anyway, it's pointless to dwell on it. "Everything looks good, so welcome, new adventurer."
"My goddess said I could ask for an advisor to inform me about the Dungeon."
"Indeed, you can. I would recommend Eina, my co-worker. She can be quite difficult when she is teaching about the Dungeon, but she is that way because she cares about the adventurers. However, she is not available at the moment, so I recommend that you come in the afternoon."
"I would like you to be my advisor," he said.
She looked at him with a hard stare at such a proposal. He merely reciprocated with his indifferent look.
"If I may ask, can you give me a reason why you would want this?"
He couldn't have fallen in love with her at first sight, right? If that were the case, she would just reject him quickly. She lost count of how many adventurers had proposed to her after having fallen in love at first sight. A relationship with an adventurer is the last thing she wants.
After all, they always die.
"Aside from the fact that you seem to be the only one available at the moment, I also get the impression that you do your job right. I still want to go to the Dungeon today to get at least a little money, but before that I need information about the first few floors of the Dungeon. And taking into account that it might take a while to pass me all the information I want, I came in the morning."
"I see, so this way you will have some time to arrange money inside the Dungeon, right?"
"Yes."
She seemed to misunderstand. He was not in love with her, which was a relief. However, why does she seem to be a little irritated, somehow? Well, it shouldn't be a big deal. She looked at the 16-year-old boy, a very young person who was risking his life to make some money
"Very well, I will be your advisor."
"I appreciate it."
Just this once, that will be the last time she will be someone's advisor again. She doesn't know why she accepted it, after all, in the end he will probably end up just like the others she was a counselor of... making her sad again. So, to avoid any great sadness, she will not get too involved with him. She will only give him the information he needs to survive inside the Dungeon.
Whether he will always come back alive is another story.
"You want the information right away, right?" She asked.
"That would be good. The sooner I know the information, the better."
She kept the status sheet and the form he handed over. After that she went to a clerk who was relaxing a bit, as she didn't have any work at the moment. Well, so far...
"Sophie, I have an adventurer to advise. You take care of the work that should be mine, Eina and Misha."
The elf just stared dumbfounded at her friend. As Rose was leaving, she began to shout.
"Wait, you can't leave me with the work of three people! Besides, what do you mean you have an adventurer? Didn't you say you wouldn't be anyone else's advisor?!"
"Cut the drama, I've been taking care of the 2's work since the Guild opened. I've taken care of most of it, so you only have to take care of the later stuff, it's not that much of a burden. In fact I said that, but I'll make an exception for the fact that the boy really needs an advisor right now."
Rose ignored the following shouts from her friend as she walked towards Ayanokouji.
"Let's go to a private room so I can teach you about the Dungeon."
He just agreed and followed her. The whole time, the gazes of the three adventurers kept glancing at the brown haired boy.
"So, I've never heard of the Hestia Familia. Is it a new Familia?"
I pulled up a subject as I guided the boy into a private room.
"Yes, I am the first member."
So it is a new Familia. He is going to have a lot of difficulties due to the fact that he is in a new Familia. Also...
"You must be careful," I warned.
"Careful?"
"I know you noticed the glances that three adventurers were sending your way. More precisely to the valuable ring on your finger. They are people who became adventurers a few months ago, they are still at level 1. They are adventurers from the Soma Familia."
After that, a brief silence settled in and we reached the private room as I opened the door. When he entered, he responded to my warning with the same calm and indifferent tone.
"I understand. I appreciate your warning, but you need not worry. They must not be idiots to try to do something in broad daylight, right?"
I closed the door and went to sit on one of the two couches that were present in the room. He sat down on the other one.
"Yes, that's true. But in the Dungeon things are different, so be careful."
He seemed to understand my warning.
"I understand, I will be careful."
Okay, with that out of my mind, we can finally begin.
"Do you have any preference as to what you want to know first?"
"Can you tell me about monsters in general? For example, if there are any differences besides strength as you descend the various floors of the Dungeon."
I sighed internally. This is going to be a rather long explanation. Well, at least there is something positive about all this, as I got rid of Eina's, Misha's and my own work. I began to explain what was known about the monsters in the Dungeon.
"Monsters are born from the walls and ceilings of the Dungeon and fight against adventurers. They are the enemies of the people and will attack without any warning. Monsters appeared from the dungeon even before the Gods and Goddesses came from Heaven and some still live on the surface in various places; however, the monsters on the surface use the power of their magic stone to multiply, and so those on the surface are much weaker than the same ones inside the dungeon. Monsters even around the Lower Floors have low intelligence and often repeat attacks on instinct, but those on the Deep Floors have higher intelligence so they know the concept of retreating."
I paused for a moment, letting him ingest all the information.
"Are there any monsters with intelligence similar to ours?"
He asked an interesting and scary question at the same time. I mean, to think that there is a monster intelligent enough to think like us would surely be a very scary thing, even more so if such a monster was strong enough to leave most first-class adventurers incapacitated.
"I think not. Although the monsters of the Three Great Missions could be the closest thing to that."
"Three Great Missions?"
"In ancient times, three monsters escaped from the Dungeon. They were very powerful monsters, and killing them was a priority for all adventurers. Therefore, they became known as the 'Three Great Quests'. Among these monsters were, Behemoth, the monster known as [The King of the Land]. Leviathan [The Overlord of the Seas]. And lastly, the One-Eyed Black Dragon. Both Behemoth and Leviathan were defeated by the Zeus and Hera Familias, but they failed to kill the One-Eyed Black Dragon. Because of this, they were driven out of Orario by the goddesses Freya and Loki."
"Freya, hein." He muttered.
Did he know the goddess Freya? Well, it's not unusual to know her, after all. Maybe she rejected him to be of her Familia? That was a possibility. Seeing how he was looking at me, I went on to finish my initial explanation about the monsters.
"Right, about the monsters. There are also certain monsters that have become stronger than normal due to the ingestion of magic stones that are known as fortified species. Some of these monsters change their appearance as they get stronger. Often these monsters occur accidentally."
After I finished the explanation, he quickly asked me a question.
"So they get stronger as they eat their own stones, right?"
"Yes."
"In that case, different species hunt the other monsters inside the Dungeon?"
"... Maybe? Mostly it occurs because some adventurers forget or fail to get all the stones from the monsters. Because of that, be sure to collect all the stones and leave none behind."
He nodded before asking me another question.
"What happens if a human or being of another race eats those stones from the monsters?"
"...Excuse me?"
"You said that monsters get stronger by eating the magic stones, so I was curious in case some human or person of another race, other than a monster. What would happen? Would that person gain more power, or maybe the person would become a monster?"
The nonchalant, calm manner in which he speaks this, along with that expressionless face... it was quite disturbing.
"No one was crazy enough to test that theory of yours, I suppose."
"I see. Well, leaving that aside, you can start with the information about the initial floors."
"Very well. Let's see..."
After that, I began to tell him about the initial floors. I detailed precisely about the monsters you could encounter from the 1st to the 5th floor of the Dungeon, along with the drop items you could get. All the while, he remained with the same face, his expression never changing at any time, making me wonder why this was so.
How long has it been since I started teaching him about the initial floors?
An hour?
I lost track of time.
A thought popped into my mind.
Maybe he would be able to come back alive...
However, even though he had that expressionless face, I knew he was paying full attention. It was different from the adventurers I had advised in the past. Most of them wanted the explanation to end soon because they wanted to venture inside the Dungeon. Due to this naivety, along with stubbornness, they all died inside the Dungeon some time later.
He is different.
Whenever I finished the explanation about a certain monster or floor, he would always ask me if that was really all, wanting all the information possible, even if this information was not that relevant. After that, I started putting in all the information I knew, even the information that I thought didn't change anything.
When I was explaining about the monsters, there was one in particular that caught his attention.
"Jack Bird?"
"A rare monster that looks like a rooster with fluffy yellow-green feathers. While it is not aggressive, it is incredibly fast and will run away if it senses any enemies. Its drop item, unlike the other monsters, is guaranteed to be a gold egg, worth at least 1,000,000 valis."
I could have sworn I saw a mysterious gleam in his eyes.
"How rare are we talking?"
"The last person who had the item drop was 6 months ago."
Jack Bird only appears on the first floor, and many adventurers, even beginners don't like to stay on this floor for the fact that the profit is not so good. There have been people who tried their luck to find a Jack Bird, but after a few days, they quickly gave up and went to the floors below where the profits were guaranteed, rather than one that is pure luck.
"Do you know this adventurer who had the item drop?"
"Well, concurrently, I was on the day he came to trade the egg and got to chat with him a bit. The Guild was pretty excited about it, making new people try to get one, but like before, everyone gave up after a few days."
"How many?"
"How many what?"
"How many monsters on the 1st floor of the dungeon did this adventurer kill before he got the item drop?"
"Ha? How the hell am I supposed to know that?"
Why did he want to know about that in specific?
"This adventurer, where can I talk to him?"
Now he wants to talk to the adventurer? I don't understand what's going on in his head.
"He basically gave up being an adventurer after he got the item drop. A million valis is an amount that can last a long time for someone normal. And also, he was weaker than most adventurers, he could only stay on the 1st floor of the Dungeon, even after months."
He seemed to think for quite a while. It was really strange and disturbing not knowing what was going on in his head right now. After thinking for a few minutes, his eyes turned to me. I looked into the golden brown eyes that seemed to look into my soul.
I started to get uncomfortable.
"I will change my question a little. Even if you don't know, if you can give an estimate it is enough. You said he only stayed on the 1st floor of the dungeon, being an employee, you must have seen him come to the Guild several times. So if you could give an estimate, how many 1st floor monsters do you think he killed before he got the item drop?"
"I still don't understand why you are asking that..."
"It is extremely important, so please try to answer my question seriously."
He was pushing this issue quite a bit, so it must really be important to him. However, how the hell could I tell the number of monsters that adventurer killed? I began to think seriously while using all the capacity of my brain to remember the times that adventurer appeared in the guild.
An estimate...
"About 500 to 700 monsters? That's the best I can estimate."
"That's enough. 500-700, huh."
"Now, can you tell me why this information is important?" I was really very curious.
"It's just a theory. Hestia told me that the Dungeon is alive. That being the case, what if the Dungeon can 'record' the progress of each adventurer, individually?"
"Oh?"
"Tell me, do you remember, before this person who got the golden egg drop, the person before her, how long it took?"
"...A year and a bit? I can't say for sure."
"See, this adventurer got the drop with only 6 months for the fact that he only stayed on the 1st floor of the Dungeon. So, I think the following. What if the Dungeon does Jack Bird birth after a certain person kills a certain number of monsters on the 1st floor as a reward for the adventurer's efforts?"
That...
"It's ridiculous," I said bluntly. "The dungeon does everything it can to kill adventurers, why on earth would it decide to reward them for their efforts?"
That was the reality. When the adventurers thought they were at peace inside the Dungeon, that was when the Dungeon showed how cruel it was.
"Are you sure of that information?"
"Of course-"
He interrupted me before I could speak.
"The Dungeon appeared in this world even before the gods and goddesses arrived. The Dungeon hates the gods to the point that if one enters it, the Dungeon will create a monster to kill the god in it. However, even so, there is not enough information. Tell me, why does the Dungeon create certain monsters that can have drop items that help with the evolution of this world? If the Dungeon really wants to kill everything, why within it are found items needed to make healing potions among other things?"
"That..."
I couldn't find any answer to such a question. In fact, I never asked myself that question before. The dungeon was here since the beginning of time, so we treated it as something cruel and common that exists in this world. But with all that he said, it made me wonder why the dungeon was there.
Was the dungeon really trying to reward adventurers with item drops from the monsters? Also, monster stones are used for almost everything in the world. The most common is to use their power to power something, such as the Tower of Babel's elevator.
"Well, as I said before, it's just a theory. However, I am willing to test it."
"Like you... wait, you don't plan to do what I think you're going to do, right?"
In response, he just looked at me with the same indifferent eyes as he spoke.
"Tell me, Rose. Would you like to find out about questions and answers about this world that no other person has run after?"
After getting all the important information about the dungeon and the starting floors, Rose and I left the private room.
As we walked back to the main Guild hall, she spoke to me.
"Tell me, Kiyotaka. I don't see any weapons with you, and according to what you said, you will enter the Dungeon today, right?"
"Yes. However, today will be more like a reconnaissance. I will stay a short time on the 1st floor today to get a little used to it. As for my weapon, well, I'm really more experienced in unarmed combat, but I think having something like a small knife or dagger might be good."
It's not like a knife or dagger is going to take away my ability to move easily, after all.
"...Are you really going to test this theory of yours?" She asked me with a slightly hesitant tone.
It was quite different from the cold and strong persona she looked like when I first met her. However, this is normal, I suppose. After I questioned a few things about the Dungeon, she seemed to be thinking more than usual. I guess I really got her attention a bit, huh.
Apparently the author of this book didn't go into detail or try to explain what the Dungeon really is about. And if he did, it must not have been until much later in the story.
"Yeah."
I didn't understand some authors of the books I read. Few are the ones who care about details that end up making the story much more interesting. For example, even if the book I read was a summary of a few volumes, the book should still tell if it is extremely important information like the mystery of the Dungeon.
Just by the fact that it mentions that the dungeon appeared before the arrival of the gods, it already leaves a great mystery. But what good is it if the author doesn't address this very mystery? It's just a waste of creating a much more interesting plot. I forced myself to stop thinking about this, after all, the situation I find myself in is different.
Just the fact that I am in this world already means that this is no longer a book.
It is real life.
And I could die with any carelessness on my part.
"I see... Well, how about you get a hired weapon from the Guild? You don't have to pay now, you can do that when you have the money, as long as it doesn't take too long."
She proposed this when we arrived at the Guild's main hall.
I could see a lot more adventurers than before, but there were a few who were still here.
"How much time do I have to pay?"
Although my specialty was unarmed combat, that's against earth humans. Against Dungeon monsters it is much more efficient if I have a way to kill them in one hit. I can speed up the process to find out about my theory as well.
"1 to 2 weeks. That should be enough for you."
"Hm, how much are two knives? The cheapest one you have."
"The two cheapest knives will cost 500 valis each."
That's a lot cheaper than I originally thought. I should have no problem getting that amount of money, even though I'm only on the 1st floor, I should still be able to get that today.
"In that case, I'll take it."
"Good, follow me."
Apparently, there must be another room with the weapons and armor that the Guild offers for novice adventurers. I just followed her, again ignoring the stares of new people.
I really need to get money to buy a normal outfit from this world.
"I was curious about something," I decided to speak up as we walked. "Those animal ears of yours...what breed are you exactly, if I may ask, of course?"
"I am of the Werewolf race."
"I see."
Werewolf, eh.
In this world there are several different kinds of bestial people.
"What are the differences between humans and bestial people?"
"Well, it depends on the race. For example, my race is a little stronger and more agile than a human. Of course, we are talking about ordinary humans, an adventurer doesn't enter into the comparison."
In other words, depending on one's race, one's combat style varies greatly. Against a race that is naturally strong, I don't stand a chance when it comes to pure physical strength, even if I can find a way to bridge the gap.
It didn't take long before we reached a room containing several types of weapons. Swords, axes, bows, among many other weapons. There were also several different types of armor, the ones that stood out the most were the heavy armor, which clearly protected a lot more - although it limited the movements of someone who was not very strong - and the light armor that was made of leather.
"They are made by novice blacksmiths," Rose's voice warned when she saw me looking at the weapons and armor. "Novice adventurers buy cheap weapons and armor as they evolve, the same case is for novice blacksmiths as well. This way, both sides help each other."
It's a win-win. You both help each other evolve, a very smart move indeed.
I noticed that some adventurers were testing the weapons, trying to find the best option for them to use. However, as soon as they saw me, their eyes went to my right hand, where my ring was. Fortunately, unlike some adventurers, they quickly looked away and went back to testing the weapons.
She went to a place that contained small knives and daggers. She took two knives and walked back to me.
I held out my hands and she handed me the knives. I looked carefully at the knives, although they are certainly better than the normal knives in my world, I must believe they are quite below average in this world.
"Although both knives are of poor quality, they will serve up to the 3rd floor of the Dungeon," Rose's voice spoke, as if she knew what I was thinking. "Now, which armor do you want?" she asked as she looked at the armors. "I don't think a heavy one is your type, so a light armor..."
"I'm not taking any armor. The knives are enough."
"Huh?"
She looked a little surprised for a moment before her expression turned hard.
"I really recommend you wear armor. Even if it's only the first floor, many people die from underestimating the dungeon," she insisted with a firm tone.
"I'm not underestimating the dungeon or anything like that, I just think any armor will get in my way. Besides, I have a little experience fighting monsters. I've faced some on the outside, and yes, I'm aware that the versions outside the Dungeon are weaker than the ones inside it."
I hope she will stop insisting and let me go with it.
I really don't like the fact that I wear armor. Sure, the armor protects the person, but for me, it would be a real problem. After training inside the White Room for so long relying only on my body and my skills, the mere fact that I wear armor might make me a little careless, although I think this is unlikely.
If I don't have any protection with me, I will instinctively take much more care, since a fatal blow from the monsters can really kill me, even if they are from the initial floors. This was only possible thanks to the White Room, as I gained the ability to dodge more fatal moves by simple reflex.
She looked quite skeptical as she thought about it. After a few seconds in silence, she finally spoke in a whisper.
"...Okay, if you die it's not my problem, really..."
I didn't say anything, I just kept the knives in my pants pockets.
"Let's go back," she said as she walked past me.
I couldn't help but notice that she was acting strange
Did I say something that irritated her?
I just started walking back to the main hall, and when I got there, I said goodbye to Rose. Although she didn't answer me back, she only sent a subtle nod of her head. It seems that I really irritated her in some way, however, what was it that I said that made her angry?
Rose just looked at the figure of Ayanokouji Kiyotaka walking away with some irritation. However, why was she irritated?
Even she didn't know the reason, really.
"Rose!" Sophie's voice caused her to look at her friend. "How could you do this to me!? It will still take a few hours for Eina and Misha to get back, so how!?" She had tears in her eyes as she looked at her with a betrayed expression
Rose looked away. "Oh, please don't make such a big deal out of it. I've certainly taken care of more than twice as much as you have since six o'clock this morning."
"Don't compare me to you! That's still not something you do for a friend of yours!"
As she was close to answering Sophie, a male voice entered both of their ears, causing them to freeze a little.
"Playing on duty, ladies?"
As they looked to the side, they saw the Guild Chief, Royman Mardeel. Royman is a fat elf with white hair, green eyes and short legs. His fatness also makes his height seem small. Royman was wearing a black suit that is of much better quality than any other Guild worker.
"No, of course not! I was just commenting on something with Rose, I'm going!" Sophie ran off and went to do her job.
"I'm the same," Rose was getting ready to run away too, but Royman stopped her.
"Wait a minute. There's something I need to talk to you about."
His voice came out in a tone of contempt and arrogance. That was his personality, after all. Royman is an arrogant Elf who constantly despises others, except the Gods and Goddesses. He likes money, causing him to be known as the Guild Pig by other Elves. Royman also dislikes half-elves, believing them to be low-class. However, unlike that, he is a hard worker.
"...Yes?"
She was sweating in his presence. What on earth did he want with her?
"You've been talking to some human, right?"
"Oh, Kiyotaka?"
"Don't expect me to know the name of a simple human I've never seen and who will never make a difference in my life. But if he is the one who was with you, then yes. Where is he?"
"...He just left. Probably to the Dungeon, since he told me he had plans to go there."
"Tch," he clicked his tongue. "Since he's an adventurer, he'll show up at the Guild again, right?"
"I think so? I became his advisor, so he should look me up when he comes back, but why do you want to talk to him, boss?"
Why this sudden interest in the human Ayanokouji Kiyotaka? She couldn't think of anything that might be the answer to that. And she doubted that he had any interest in any human, his only interest is in gods, goddesses and money.
"It's not me, Ouranos-sama who wants to talk to him. When he shows up again, have him come to my office, that's an order, understood?"
"Yes!" She just answered by reflex.
"All right, get back to work."
"Wait... Boss, why is Ouranos-sama interested in my adventurer-" she stopped talking when he looked at her.
"That's none of your business, now, get back to work."
She just obeyed and ran to the counter, curiosity lingered in her mind.
Royman just frowned. 'Why would Ouranos-sama want to know about a mere mortal, a human on top of that, who should be no big deal?' He thought with disgust.
He remembered the words Ouranos had said to him.
"There is someone in the Guild, a human with a familiar aura. An aura that I haven't felt in thousands of years. The aura is currently in the Guild's main hall, along with Rose Fannett's aura. Go there and have him come meet me."
What did he mean by familiar aura that he hasn't felt in years? Ouranos was the first god who descended into the mortal world, he lived for many years, so how the hell is it possible for a human to emit a familiar aura that he hasn't felt in thousands of years? Something is wrong...
He simply started walking back to his office with an unhappy face.
Currently I find myself on the streets of Orario. After leaving the Guild, I started thinking about the things I learned from Rose today.
Intelligent monsters on the deep floors and evolved species. It's really interesting.
I was very curious to see if my theory will come true. The dungeon was alive, so it's a possibility. Let's assume the fact that the dungeon actually "records" the progress of adventurers on all floors. In this case, if a given adventurer kills a certain amount of monsters, the dungeon generates monsters that contain item drop.
I prefer to believe this than the possibility that it is just luck.
An example of this is the Jack Bird, only found on the 1st floor. Its drop item is worth 1,000,000 valis. A value that must be quite high, since an adventurer retired only after getting one.
Using Rose's estimate, if a person kills between 500 and 700 monsters in the Dungeon, that person generates the Jack Bird.
I have come to the conclusion that the dungeon "records" the progress of each adventurer due to the fact that it took a long time to generate. It is much simpler than it sounds.
If the Dungeon "recorded" the kills of all the adventurers to generate the Jack Bird, for example, one adventurer kills 100 monsters and a different adventurer kills another 100, then the count would be 200. If this were indeed the case, then you would have reports of many Jack Birds appearing in the Dungeon on the 1st floor.
However, if the Dungeon records the progress of each adventurer, individually, it makes sense, because the adventurer would have to kill many monsters on the 1st floor to make the Dungeon generate the Jack Bird. Since most people only think about going down the floors of the Dungeon to get money faster, they didn't even think about this possibility and ignore the 1st floor for not making a decent profit.
Could the Dungeon have done this as a way of saying that all floors can get their deserved rewards?
What if, in fact, every floor of the Dungeon has some kind of rare monster? It was unlikely, since the Dungeon has been in this world for many years and only Jack Bird who is on the upper floors has such a high reward for his item drop. However, it was not an impossible possibility.
What if, people simply did not get the information and did not reach the "goals" of the dungeon to generate such a special monster?
I have to take into account the fact that this world may be very different from what I read in the book, although the main story should not have that much difference. It all depends on my actions, just as the descriptions of my "Rewriter" skill say.
I didn't think of all this myself until after Rose's explanations, so I'm very grateful to have spoken to her specifically.
The Tower of Babel was in my sight.
As soon as I got closer, I quickly felt the same sensation as yesterday. However, something felt different this time, although I don't know exactly what.
The small light on top of the Tower of Babel is visible to my eyes, and as soon as it noticed me, the light disappeared completely.
I sighed a little at this.
Freya can be quite insistent, it seems. I will probably have to meet with her very soon.
Even if I don't want to attract her attention, if I just stay like this in the dark the whole time, her interest and curiosity in me will only increase. I have to quench her curiosity at first before it's too late for me.
"Well, whatever. Let's go."
I walked toward the Dungeon, fully aware of the three presences that had been following me since I left the Adventurers' Guild.
Well, that's it, let me know what you thought of the chapter :)
I hope the reason for him joining the Hestia Familia made sense. I think so, after all Ayanokouji is someone who doesn't want attention, so the famous Familias like Loki and Freya were out of the question at the moment. So, at least in the beginning, the Hestia Familia was the best option for him. Notice that I made one small change. Instead of 1 year to transfer to another familia, it is 7 months. It was a small change that you probably didn't notice, so I am mentioning it here for people reading the endnotes :)
Does this mean that Ayanokouji will leave the Hestia familia in the future? Who knows. After all, as Ayanokouji himself says, it is impossible to predict what plans he might have there in the future. So, if you were expecting him to be part of the Freya Familia, I'm sorry. But don't be so upset, I will do something in the future. Let's say that Freya and Hestia can be very "close".
What do you think about the two abilities of Ayanokouji? Tell me your theories about them. (PALMARIUS was an ability created by 02Ragnar, a Wattpad writer who also did a Danmachi X COTE story, in fact, I was inspired by him to create this story). I just modified the information a little. As for the Rewriter ability, well, as you can imagine, Ayanokouji will basically rewrite the world according to the actions he takes. Whether it is for better or worse we will have to wait and see :D
I would like to ask you something. You didn't get confused who was saying what in the chapter, right? Just curious since I didn't detail who was talking for the most part.
I also have an idea about an ability that Ayanokouji will acquire in the future. If you are someone who is good at creating "magic corners" contact me. This skill will be something that will allow the level difference to be somewhat useless. I don't intend to make anything OP, you will understand in the future. Just know that I want to be more realistic with this story than in the old version.
And if you noticed, "Fairy Steps" are not in the Falna of Ayanokouji. I guess this is to be expected, but if you have doubts, just wait and it will be explained later in the story.
What is Ayanokouji planning? What is it that he says is too expensive? Let me know what you think, although I think some people will be able to guess.
I decided to make Rose the counselor of Ayanokouji for reasons I find interesting. Let me know what you think of this idea.
Also, although he says that his goal is to live a peaceful life without attention from anyone, he ended up drawing Rose's attention with his questioning. What could he really be planning with all this? Theories!
This chapter has some pretty important information. Ayanokouji questioning about the dungeon and other things. I plan to focus a lot on the dungeon theme, where it seems most don't prioritize. Some new monsters may also appear, I have plans for that, so just wait.
What do you think about the theory that Ayanokouji has about the Dungeon? I didn't want to go with the standard "Oh, he got lucky," so I thought about it.
This chapter was more explanation than anything else, the next one will have some action, the little end already makes it clear.
Well, that's it. Don't forget to tell me what you thought of this chapter, the parts you liked or found interesting, even the parts you didn't like. As long as it is constructive criticism, I don't mind. What I don't like are comments that are only aimed at cursing the story and the author for reasons that no one knows what.
See you in the next chapter!
Next update (probably) "The True Geniuses".
