Ruby Rose
I finished loading everything we needed for the big field day at Nick's kindergarten into the trunk of the car. Big basket full of delicious food made by Weiss and a blanket for us all to eat on. Plus a tote bag with a change of clothes for Nick just in case something happens AND my camera of course so I can take plenty of pictures of our precious little guy.
It's crazy to think it's rolled around already, it feels like yesterday that we enrolled him and dropped him off for his first day. He's been practicing like crazy for today, Yang has helped out a lot. Taking him on runs and even buying him tiny little dumbbells so he can work out his arms. It's honestly adorable watching him try to do curls with them.
I am really grateful for Yang helping out on this since I'm not really the most athletic person in the world. Not that it would have taken much convincing, she absolutely loves spending time with Nicholas.
"Everything ready hun?" Weiss asks as she walks outside with little Nick in tow.
"We are good to go!" I open the backseat and Nicholas hops in almost immediately, strapping himself into his car seat.
"I am so excited Mommy!" He is practically bouncing in his seat. It's so cute.
"I can tell, Mommy is excited to get plenty of pictures of her baby boy!" I kiss him on the cheek before closing the car door and rushing over to the passenger door for Weiss.
"You know you don't always have to do that?" She chuckles. I just wag my finger at her.
"Oh but I do, how else am I supposed to treat a queen?" I ask and she just lets out a small giggle before giving me a quick kiss.
"Just get in the car you dolt.'' She gets inside and I gently close the door behind her, running around the car and hopping into the driver's seat. "Alright Rose Family, let's move out!"
"Yeah!" Nick cheers from the back seat as we pull out of the driveway.
The drive to school isn't long at all, only about ten minutes. When we arrive I see that the parking lot is absolutely packed.
"Wow," I say "it looks like the whole town is here."
"Well probably not quite, but it is a lot." Weiss says with a small laugh.
"You think we'll be able to get a good spot?"
"If Aunt Yang has anything to do with it, then definitely."
"Oh yeah, I forgot she promised to show up super early to snag a really good spot for all of us." I chuckle.
"That girl really doesn't play around when it comes to her nephew."
"I love Aunt Yang, she's awesome!"
"I'm glad you do, because she loves you too. You're pretty special to her." I smile at him in the rearview mirror.
"I know, she tells me all the time."
"I bet she does." I smirk.
When we finally find a spot I open the door and hop out. Weiss follows suit, opening the door for little Nick to practically fly out of the car.
"Come on, let's go find Aunt Yang." I grab hold of his hand and Weiss grabs his other hand.
"Okay Mommy, let's hurry!" He starts pulling me along towards the school.
"Oh hold up, let me get my camera and stuff first." I run back to the car and grab my bag, quickly running back over to Nick and Weiss who both laugh at how forgetful I am.
Once we make it to the field we see a sea of parents all setting up cameras and lying out on blankets. Most of the kids are already with their respective classes, getting ready.
"Nicholas!" We didn't have to look long to find Yang though who is already waving us over to a clearing near the front, Alan and Inu are already set up and I think Alan's camera setup could rival Ruby's.
"Aunt Yang!" He runs over to her as fast as his little legs will carry him. As soon as he reaches her she sweeps him up in a big hug, squeezing him and kissing the top of his head.
"Hey there little buddy, Aunt Yang missed you so much!"
"I missed you too Aunt Yang but that tickles!" he laughs as she rubs her cheek against his.
"You gonna win lots of events today!?"
"You bet!" he throws his arms up. "and Mommy is gonna take lots of pictures!"
"I'm sure she is and since she has a way better camera than Aunt Yang, I'm sure she will be happy to send me plenty of them!"
"Don't worry Yang, I will make sure you get lots of pictures." I jokingly roll my eyes. In reality I love how close she and Nicholas are, it's so cute.
"Aright hun, it's best you put him down so he can get to his class." Blake says.
"Yeah, Kirinu is already over there." Inu adds.
"Ooh I wanna go see Kirinu!"
"Alright alright." Yang slowly puts him down, really not wanting to. He offers his Aunt Blake a hug, which she gladly accepts, before running off toward his class with a big grin on his face.
"He's such a sweetheart." Yang sighs happily.
"I know right? He's the cutest thing ever." I hug my sister. "Missed ya Sis, sorry I couldn't make it to your last fight."
"Eh don't worry about it, you didn't miss much, she went down way too fast." Yang chuckles.
"She's not kidding, the fight barely lasted five minutes." Blake sets her laptop aside. "It was kind of embarrassing."
"Yang is just too much of a beast." I sit down on the blanket and Weiss sits down beside me.
"Is that your newest book you're working on Blake?" Weiss asks, pointing to Blake's laptop.
"Oh uh, yeah. It's still in the pretty early stages."
"Any chance I could get a sneak peak?" Weiss puts her hands together. Weiss has kind of become a big fan of Blake's writing. I haven't read any of them myself but Weiss insists they are amazing.
"No way." Blake laughs. "It's still way too rough, once I finish the initial draft you can read it."
"Fine…" Weiss pouts. "Oh it looks like things are about to get started!"
First thing is first, they parade the kids out for a sort of 'Opening Ceremony'. The individual classes are all holding banners to represent their class. Eventually Nick and Kirinu's class comes out and I immediately start snapping pictures.
"Nick, over here, look at Mommy!" I call out to him. Luckily he hears me and waves at me with a big smile on his face. He's so cute!
"Kirinu, Daddy is over here!" Alan calls out to her, having gone into full 'Daddy Mode'. Honestly I would have never expected him to be so into being a Dad, not the Alan I went to Highschool with.
He really wasn't at first either but over time, he just slipped into the role like it was made for him and now I fully believe he would do anything for his little girl.
The first event was a game of tug of war between classes. Nick's class ended up losing in the second round but it was very close.
That was followed by Ring Toss which Nick came in fifth place on and some strange team based game where the kids had to collect balls of a certain color and collect them in their teams basket. Nick's team came in third.
Over the course of the day he looked more and more disappointed that he wasn't winning any events. During the family picnic we tried to reassure him that it was okay as long as he was trying his best but he really wanted to win something.
It was the last event of the day, a race around the field. If he was ever going to come in first it would be this event. He practiced running more than anything leading up to today and he's actually pretty fast so I think he has a really good shot.
He was in the last set of kids to get to run along with Kirinu so we had to wait a bit before it finally got around to him. Finally though, he and several other kids were lined up at the starting line.
I can tell just by looking at his face that he is crazy nervous. "Don't worry Nicholas, you can do this!" I shout to try and calm his nerves.
"Yeah we believe in you!" Weiss cheers along with me and this seems to help as he smiles and waves at us.
"Ready!" The teacher raises a flag in the air as all the kids get into position.
"Set!" Nicholas takes a deep breath.
"Go!" They bolt over the starting line and just like I expected, Nicholas takes an early lead.
"That's my boy!" I cheer, waving a flag in the air but making sure to keep recording as well.
"Keep it up Nicholas!" Weiss is now standing, waving her own flag.
Nicholas noticeably picks up even more speed, securing his lead over the other kids. Poor Kirinu is trailing pretty far behind though. Not stopping Alan from cheering his lungs out though.
"Come on baby girl, you got this!"
After the halfway point it seems pretty obvious that Nicholas is going to take first place. Suddenly though, Kirinu trips on something and she falls forward on her face. It definitely looks like it hurts too.
She starts crying, probably both from pain and embarrassment. Alan and Inu almost bolt onto the track to check on her but to the surprise of everyone, Nick stops dead in his tracks and runs back to her.
It's hard to hear what he is saying over the other cheering parents but he kneels down and smiles, patting her head slowly bringing her crying down to a sniffle. He gets back to his feet and offers her his hand which she takes before pulling her up and guiding her to keep running.
He keeps pace with her the entire time, probably trying to cheer her up and keep her from feeling too embarrassed. Finally as they reached the finish line, even though he wanted to win really badly, he let her cross ahead of him so she at least wouldn't finish last.
"Wow.." I smiled at Weiss and leaned my head on her shoulder. "I know I say this a lot but…we have the sweetest little boy in the entire world."
"Yeah, we sure do." she leans her head on mine. "I guess we must be doing a pretty good job to have a boy like him."
A little after the race was finished the three kids who came in first, second and third got their prizes and all the kids were released to their parents. Kirinu and Nicholas both come over to us, looking a little sad.
"Are you okay Kirinu?" Inu asks as both she and Alan rush over and start inspecting her for any cuts or bruises. Other than her face being a little red from where it hit the ground she seems fine though.
"I'm okay…" she looks down at the ground with her hair falling in her face and she refuses to look at either of them.
"What's wrong?" Alan asks, brushing her hair out of her face to show that she is softly crying and blushing from shame.
"I'm sorry I didn't do a better job Daddy…" Alan and Inu both look like they want to cry too but they force smiles instead.
"You did the best you could baby, Daddy is very proud of you." he picks her up and she immediately throws her arms around his neck, hugging him tight. I think it's fair to say she is a bit of a Daddy's girl but it's way too cute.
Alan keeps hugging Kirinu but he also walks over to Nicholas and ruffles his hair. "Thanks for looking out for her little man, I'm glad she has a friend like you."
"Y-You're welcome, I just wanted to make sure she was okay." he says, obviously a little bit embarrassed but also happy to be praised.
"You did so good, sweetie." I kneel down and hug him close.
"I…I'm sorry that I didn't win though Mommy."
"What?"
"I promised that I would win a ribbon for you and Momma." His voice shakes a little, almost like he wants to cry.
"Don't be silly dear." Weiss is now kneeling beside me, cupping his cheek in her hand. "Mommy and I are both very proud of you."
"You are?"
"Yes goober." I laugh and grab his little hand. "You could have definitely won but you gave that up to comfort your best friend, how could we not be proud of that?"
"Thanks Mommy, Thanks Momma." he hugs us both as best he can. I can tell by how weak the hug is that he's getting pretty tired. I pick him up and it doesn't take long for him to lay his head on my shoulder and start to fall asleep.
"Looks like he really tired himself out." Yang gently pats his head.
"He sure did." I put my hand on his back. "We should probably get him home."
"Sure thing." Yang hugs me and Weiss.
"We better hear from you soon about Thanksgiving." Blake says, hugging us both as well.
"We'll get back to you soon, don't worry." Weiss says. "I'd better get a sneak peak at that new book soon."
We all say our final goodbyes and head home. Today maybe didn't go exactly as I expected but it was still a really good day. I look in the rearview mirror at a passed out Nicholas in his car seat. I can't help but smile at how adorable he is, his head leaning against the side of the seat and a small amount of drool leaking from his mouth.
When we get home I take him out of the car seat and carry him inside while Weiss grabs our bag out of the trunk. I quietly and gently carry him up the stairs to his room and carefully lay him down on his bed, pulling the blanket over him which he immediately snuggles into.
"What a little angel." Weiss says, leaning against the door frame. I guess she snuck upstairs after putting our stuff away.
"I know.." I lean down and kiss his cheek before walking over to Weiss and kissing her. "And he's our little angel, how lucky are we?"
"On top of everything else that's happened to me since I met you?" Weiss lays her head on my shoulder. "Sometimes I feel like I'm hogging all the world's good luck all to myself."
I smile and kiss the top of her head when a thought pops into my head. "Have you…have you given it any thought?"
"Given what any thought?" she asks.
"You know..what Nick said about wanting to be a big brother."
"Well yeah of course I have…why?"
"I'm just thinking…things have worked out really well for us so far and I'm not totally against the idea of having another pair of little feet running around."
"True.." she puts her arms around my waist, hugging me from the side. "And based on today, I feel like Nick would make a wonderful big brother."
"For sure…so what are we thinking?"
"I say we give it a little more thought but…" she leans up and kisses my cheek. "I'm liking the idea more and more."
"Me too." I say as we quietly sneak out of the room and slowly close the door behind us, getting one last look at our precious little boy as we do.
