Not being one to let her allies down, the princess was soon on a train departing for the historic ruins. Amy stared out of the window of the royal train, enthralled by the rolling mountains and lakes of Blaze's world. She smiled at the hedgehog girl and soon was enjoying the views herself. Even the normally chatty Sonic was mesmerized by the outdoors of her kingdom.

"Dang Blaze, I see why you protect this place so hard…"

"It definitely is home." Blaze smiled at Sonic's words, ordering lunch for them all. Eventually a comfortable and quiet chatter started among the group as the train sped off.

The scenery seemed to change with every passing minute, from dense forests that hid ancient secrets to open fields that stretched endlessly, bathed in the soft hues of the setting sun. The tranquility outside was a stark contrast to the urgency of their mission, but it provided a much-needed respite for the weary team.

Tails, ever the tech genius, had set up a small workstation by the window. He was busy analyzing the readings from the rise in chaos energy. "This is unlike anything I've seen before," he muttered, his brow furrowed in concentration.

Knuckles leaned back, closing his eyes. "You think Eggman's behind this?"

Rouge, flipping through a magazine, replied nonchalantly, "Wouldn't be surprised. That man can't resist meddling with things beyond his understanding."

Shadow, sitting in a corner with his arms folded, remained silent, his mind evidently elsewhere. Every now and then, his gaze would drift towards Blaze, who was engaged in conversation with Sonic. It was clear that those two shared a bond that went beyond mere friendship, forged through countless battles and adventures.

Amy, noticing Shadow's thoughtful expression, nudged him playfully. "Penny for your thoughts?"

Shadow glanced at her, a hint of a smirk on his face. "Just thinking about our mission."

Amy rolled her eyes. "Oh, come on! Even you need a break from all that brooding."

Shadow only shook his head.

As the journey continued, the atmosphere in the train grew more relaxed. Sonic challenged Knuckles to a card game, which quickly turned competitive, drawing laughter from the group. Tails and Rouge discussed potential strategies for their mission, while Blaze and Amy chatted about their past adventures.

Night fell, and the train's gentle rocking lulled some of the team members to sleep. Blaze looked across at Shadow, who was gazing out at the starlit sky. "It's beautiful, isn't it?"

Shadow paused for a moment, his gaze unwavering from the celestial expanse outside. "Your world… it has a certain serenity to it. It's… calming."

Blaze tilted her head, genuinely curious. "Is that a good thing for someone like you?"

Shadow looked directly at her, a hint of vulnerability in his crimson eyes. "It's… unfamiliar. I'm not used to feeling at peace."

Blaze boldly left her seat to sit next to the dark hedgehog, leaning over him to point out certain constellations that were unique to her dimension. He leaned back, avoiding any accidental touches as if her skin was lava.

She slowly settled back into the seat, causing Shadow to feel a bit relieved. "Allowing yourself to feel peace is not a weakness." She finally said, giving Shadow a sincere look.

Shadow stared back at her, yet found his eyes darting back to his lap. "It's not fair that I can live in peace, when I did exactly what she wouldn't have wanted me to do. Maria wanted me to protect our home…but I started off doing the complete opposite."

Blaze widened her eyes at the admission, finally understanding why he treated himself this way. She sighed, starting up at the intricate ceiling of the train.

After a long silence between them, Blaze finally spoke up. "I was a disappointment to my parents when they were alive."

Shadow looked up at her, shocked at the even tone she used to drop such a bomb. Blaze took a breath and continued.

"I continue to be a disappointment to their most loyal followers. It seems in life and in death, I can never measure up to what they wanted."

She looked back at Shadow, a hopeful smile now grazing her lips. "But if I allowed myself to give into guilt and avoid peace, I would not have a chance to be here with you all right now. I would be in my study, constantly trying to prove them all wrong. For what it's worth, I would much rather be here."

Throughout their exchange, Shadow noticed how the princess' eyes were burning a hole into his. He wondered if this is how she was with everyone. If so, he couldn't bear to believe her to ever be a disappointment. He could feel himself getting lost in those orbs, wondering what was happening to him…

She smiled, and he could swear a light blush had crept onto her cheeks. She gave his shoulder a tender squeeze, sending little jolts of electricity through his arm. "Think about where you want to be." She said sincerely.

Shadow narrowed his eyes at her and by force of habit jerked his shoulder away. Blaze frowned, gently dropping her hand from his shoulder to meet his flashing red eyes. "Right now, the only place I want to be is back home."

He watched her hopeful gaze fall, his gut churning. Since he had arrived at this dimension, Blaze had been nothing but understanding to him. From making sure he had the chance to try her palace's cuisine, to indulging him in a fruitful duel. There was absolutely no reason for him to be treating her this way…and yet…

Shadow took a deep breath, sharply tearing his eyes away from her to look back outside the window. "Look…" he started seriously, desperately trying to find the right words. "I know what you're doing. If you know what's good for you…you'll stay away, princess."

The lavender cat stared at him, not really believing what she was hearing. He had conceded to eating their food and joined them the other night. Even complimented her on her sparring abilities? He shared the reason why he never allows himself to feel happy and now…He was telling her to get lost? Bullshit.

She huffed, standing up to move away from him. "I was under the impression we were becoming friends. My mistake."

"I'm not sure what gave you that impression," he bit back icily.

At this Blaze scowled and stormed off to another cabin, leaving traces of sparks in his midst.

With the sound of the sliding door slamming a bit harder than perhaps she wanted to, Shadow let out a breath he didn't know he had been holding. The feeling of Blaze's eyes tearing tiny holes into his soul couldnt be ignored. The implications of letting anyone in that deep were too great, especially since their time here was fleeting. He was convinced he was doing her a favor by keeping her at arm's length. He rationalized his coldness as a protective measure; his emotional burdens were not hers to bear. Yet as he closed his eyes, attempting to expel the guilt seeping in, he couldn't entirely convince himself that pushing her away was the lesser evil.

"Wow, Shadow. That was cold, even for you."

Shadow clenched his jaw and met the gaze of the new speaker. Sonic was awake, his eyes still clouded with sleep but sharply focused.

"Stay out of it, Sonic. You wouldn't understand."

Sonic, not entirely deterred, propped himself up on one elbow. "Maybe I wouldn't understand, but you can't just push people away and expect no consequences."

Shadow turned his gaze back to the window, his eyes unwavering. "Consequences? I've been living with consequences my entire life."

Sonic sighed, letting the weight of Shadow's words hang in the air. "Fine, keep your walls up. But remember, walls don't just keep others out; they keep you in, too."

Shadow winced, feeling the truth of Sonic's words seep in, further fueling the battle between his instincts and his emerging sense of regret.

The room fell silent, except for the faint sounds of the ship's engines humming in the background. Shadow kept staring out the window, contemplating Sonic's words. Finally, he spoke, his voice tinged with a note of self-reproach.

"You're not entirely wrong. But some walls are necessary."

Sonic laid back down, staring at the ceiling. "Are they though? Ever seen 'Attack on Titan'?"

Shadow rolled his eyes, conceding he wasn't going to win with this hedgehog. For a brief moment, he considered going after Blaze, to apologize or at least to explain. But inertia and caution held him back. Instead, he took a deep breath, as if preparing for a battle yet to come.

"Get some sleep, Sonic. Tomorrow's another day, another challenge."

Sonic smirked, closing his eyes. "Yeah, another day to make the same mistakes, right? Your call, buddy."

As Sonic drifted back to sleep, Shadow clenched his fist, irritated by his insufferable rival. 'Where does he get the nerve?' he mused.

Cursing himself internally, he had to admit they at least had to be civil. They had a job to do after all - and as he mentioned himself, the next day carried new challenges. He stood and walked towards the direction Blaze ran off to, steeling himself for how he would approach this.

He didn't need to walk very far, as the princess was just in the next cabin, her posture closed off, fixated on the window next to her. He approached her slowly, though she never once turned to face him.

"Blaze," he began, choosing his words carefully, "I was wrong earlier. I shouldn't have said what I did."

She turned to face him, eyes hardened. "Is that supposed to be an apology?"

"In my own way, yes," he admitted, avoiding eye contact.

She sighed, "It's not a very good one. But I guess I have to take it for now…"

"That's fair," Shadow replied, the tension still palpable between them. "Just know that I'm not always good with… people."

"I noticed. Goodnight." Blaze said dryly.

Exiting the cabin, Shadow was accompanied by a lingering sense of remorse. But he did what he had to do. Tomorrow was another day, and at least they could start over as the relative strangers they were always meant to be.
