Chapter 3
After her shift, Jackie returned home for the evening. Upon walking through the door she found Danny and Jon sitting on the sofa in the living room, dressed in blue jeans and t-shirt and playing video games on the television. On the coffee table was left over pizza and half empty cups of soda. She came to the entry, "I'm home boys. I see you two ate already."
Jon looked up and stated, "I bought us pizza and had it delivered. We saved you some. It's in the fridge."
"I appreciate that, Jon." she smiled at Jack's clone. Her eyes settled on his features, "I'm wondering if I met your dad the other day, Jon. There was a fender bender. A guy driving a big black quad cab dually truck…"
He threw up his hands, "Who did the old fart hit?" He figured it was Jack who caused the accident.
"He was rear ended by a young girl in a red car." she explained. "His name is Colonel Jonathan O'Neill. Mark said he has a son named Jon and I'm wondering if that Colonel is your dad."
"He's my parent alright." he complained.
Jackie stated, "Your dad is real cute…like you."
He grumbled, "Trust me. He knows."
She laughed, "Some day you will appreciate him and all he does for you." She walked to the book shelf near the wall and started to go through the book titles.
Danny asked, "What ya looking for, ma?"
"I met this man at the accident. He had a symbol that seemed burned into his forehead in gold. It's the symbol for Apophis." she informed. She found the book. "I want to double check."
Danny cocked a head, "Burned into his forehead in gold?"
Jon figured, "You mean Teal'c. I know him. He's good. He's okay."
She stated, "He had a green card and the Colonel seemed to be vouching for him. Thing is…I've seen symbols burned into foreheads before."
"You have?" Jon came to attention for that indicate a Jaffa or Goa'uld connection on Earth.
"When I was working for the F.B.I., I came across a cult. They worshipped the Ancient Egyptian god, Baal but they pronounced it Ba'al. They had tattoos and some even did so on their foreheads." she informed. "It's very dangerous cult. Now I am wondering if there is an Apophis cult as well."
Jon pressed concerned, "Tell me more about the Ba'al cult."
"They are dug in deep and in government." she informed. "That's the reason I left the F.B.I.. There are cults throughout government and in churches. Real life X-Files stuff." she confessed, "Sometimes I feel like Fox Mulder digging thought it all." She then stated, "I'll be in my office if you need me, boys." She left the room with the book in hand as she was determined to dig into the new symbol.
Danny looked up from the game, "Your turn." he noticed Jon seemed distant. "You okay?"
"I'm fine." he replied alarmed. He stated, "Put in a movie. Cassie should be here soon anyways. I'm going to go ask your mom a few questions." He stood up and left the living room and went to Jackie's office. He stood in the doorway and watched as she opened the gun safe and stored her duty belt.
She noticed Jon, "What's up?" she asked him she removed the tactical vest she wore all day.
"Tell me more about Ba'al." he requested.
"The leader of the cult is called Ba'al. He's got a cult following of people who think he's an actual god." she told him.
"What does he look like?" he asked alarmed.
She went to her desk drawer and retrieved a folder. She opened it and handed him the photo that she took.
Jon looked upon the photo of the enemy he knew. It was Ba'al dressed in a suit and tie and photographed in D.C. He gulped, "When was this taken?"
"Six months ago." she told him. "Do you recognize him?"
"I need to show this to…my dad." he informed. "What else do you got on him?"
"It's a very dangerous cult, Jon." she warned him. "I had to leave the F.B.I. or they would gone after Danny. These guys are dangerous. They will take down an entire plane full of innocent people to kill one guy."
He agreed, "I know how dangerous these guys are. When my…dad…comes, you need to tell him everything you know about the cult. Cassie is coming. You need to tell Janet too." He then asked, "Ba'al knows you have a son?"
She nodded, "He and the cult know about my son. That's why I came way out here. I wanted to put as much distance between them and Danny as possible."
Jon asked, "Has anyone ever run a DNA test on Danny?"
She cocked her head, "Why do you ask?"
"Just curious?" he replied.
Danny called, "Mom! Jon! Cassie and her mom are here."
"Be right there." Jackie called back. She didn't have time to change out of her uniform nor would she change in front of Jon. She motioned for him to follow, "Come on." She led Jon out of the office and to the front door of a newly moved into home. She opened the door to reveal Cassie and Janet Frasier. Janet was dressed in civilian clothing of jeans and a white blouse. Cassie wore jeans and a peach top and carried an overnight bag. She felt comfortable staying in the stranger's home knowing Jack's teenage clone would be there to watch out for her.
Janet grinned at Jon, "I see you made it before us."
He explained, "I've been here since school got out."
Jacket greeted, "You must be Janet. Come on in." She opened the door wide and spoke to Cassie, "Good to see you, Cassie. Danny has told me a lot about you. He's in the living room."
"Thank you, Officer Garrett." the girl replied.
Janet followed Cassie into the home. She noticed boxes piled against a wall from the move and the simple furnishings. "Still unpacking?"
She nodded, "And working full time."
She asked, "How do you like Colorado Springs so far?"
"It's great." she cheered. "My partner knows you. Mark Carter."
Janet asked, "How do you like working with Mark?"
"He's a good guy when he's not trying to fix me up with another cop named Pete." she shrugged.
Janet pondered, "He's been trying to fix Sam up with Pete too."
"He likes to play cupid?" she wondered.
Danny soured, "Who is Pete?"
"Some other cop," she shrugged. "Jon is sleeping in Danny's room and Cassie, you can sleep in my room tonight. Danny has bunk beds. We can share if that's okay."
The girl nodded.
Janet stated, "If it's okay with you, Jackie. I mean it's your house."
"It will be fine." she assured. "I spent a summer at camp once and the bunk house was nothing but girls. The youngest was Gert, she was 8 and had horrible nightmares. She used to climb in bed with me."
Danny sighed annoyed, "Not the summer camp story again."
Janet asked amused, "Summer camp story?"
"Mom went undercover in a summer camp and busted stopped some dude from shooting up the camp." he recalled part of the story.
Cassie perked up, "Tell me the story, Officer Garrett."
"You don't have to call me 'Officer Garrett', Cassie." she told the girl.
Janet requested, "I would like to hear the story too."
"You got time?" she asked the doctor.
"Nothing but time." she replied. "I got the night all to myself with Cassie spending the night here."
Jon spoke up, "Sam isn't doing anything tonight either. Let's have her come over and we can order more pizza."
Cassie cheered, "That would be fun!"
Janet looked Jon straight in the face and suggested, "We should invite the Colonel too."
He glared and shot back, "Hell no!" Jon wanted Sam all to himself for the evening.
The doctor grinned amused at him for he acted just like Jack. "It's up to Jackie if she wants to invite anyone else."
"Sam is Mark's sister, right?" she clarified.
Janet nodded, "Yes she is."
"Let's invite her. I want to meet her." she agreed.
Jon immediately got out his cell phone out and started to dial. He then spoke, "Carter! You free tonight? Great! Come over to Jackie's house. Frasier is here and we are all going to eat pizza and watch a movie. Great!" he disconnected the call rather cheerful. "She's coming." He then stated, "I'll order more pizza."
Janet asked him, "How much pizza have you had today?"
He let out a little burp, "Way more than I should."
Later
Sam found herself sitting at the dinning room table with Janet and her brother's new partner, Jackie as Danny, Jon and Cassie were engrossed in the movie. Jackie had donned jeans and a flannel as they worked on the bottle of wine.
Sam grinned at Jackie and asked, "So…what's it like to be all the day in the same car with my brother?" She was laughing to herself as she recalled her childhood car trips. She wore jeans and a gray sweat shirt and sneakers.
Jackie mentioned, "He's good company. He likes to talk about his kids and his family. He talks about you and his dad a lot and about Pete."
"He's trying to get me to go on a date with Pete." Sam mentioned.
"He's trying the same with me." she laughed. "I told him no cops. I'm not dating any cops. I come a family of cops. I know what we are like."
Janet stated, "Heed her warning, Sam. No cops. We just need to find a magic lamp with a genie and have the perfect man conjured up." she laughed.
"That's a wish." Sam agreed.
Janet asked, "So…what about this summer camp story that Danny mentioned?"
"It was sixteen years ago. I just got my first job as a deputy sheriff in a rural county in Upstate New York. There was this summer camp on a lake up there in the mountains." she began. "The owner was getting these weird threatening letters in the mail all winter long. The Post Office came up empty handed and the season was about to open. The department wanted to send in a uniformed armed deputy to guard the camp during the summer. The owner didn't want to scare the kids so…I was sent in and I was told to wear plain clothes and instructed to conceal a sidearm. All I had was a snubby and I had this pink fanny pack that doubled as a holster to hide it. I was never sent in as a camper or staff so…no one could really figure me out at first. I looked so young councilors thought I was a camper. But I helped the younger campers so many campers thought I was a councilor. I was neither…I was security."
Janet laughed, "That must have been a hell of summer."
"I met this guy." she nodded with a twinkle in her eye. She paused as she recalled for just a moment. "He did figure me out but took a bit. He also helped me find the source of the letters. It was a disgruntle ex-employee who wanted to shut down the camp to get even for being fired the year before. No real harm was ever intended. But boy…that summer…" a lusting look came across her face.
Janet pressed amused, "You and the guy?"
She nodded, "He was the same age as me and in college. He needed the credit to go further for his doctorate."
Sam figured, "Summer camp would be a good option for work credit in college. What was his major?"
"Archeology and linguistics." she replied. "He was brilliant! I mean…Einstein brilliant…And so cute." she mentioned as she took a sip of wine. "He caught me skinny dipping." she added.
Janet placed her hand under her chin and coaxed, "Tell me more."
Sam listened to the description of the man and she began to wonder if it could be Daniel but she was not sure.
"It was in the middle of a heat wave. I could not go swimming during the day with the campers. So, in the middle of the night I went for a dip and he was thinking the same thing. I got to the lake first. He found me swimming there. I got out, wrapped a towel around myself and looked for some kind of exist. I was so embarrassed but I acted cool, nearly taunting to cover up how embarrassed I was. So, I planted a big kiss on him and made my escape back to my cabin."
Janet sounded disappointed, "Hell…I would have grabbed him, stripped him down and had sex right on the beach." She refilled her wine glass, "You missed your opportunity woman."
"I made up for the opportunity later." she assured. "The guy is Danny's father." She was feeling the affect of the wine. "The actual sex came in a storage room after a downpour that we got caught in." She then confessed, "I think he was a virgin until then."
Janet asked, "That bad?"
She replied, "It was good. It's just he kind of didn't know what to do with me at first. The next few times were much better."
"So Danny wasn't a one night stand baby." Janet figured.
"He's a summer love baby." she agreed. She filled up her glass and admitted, "God! I loved that man. But he was always working and going all over the place. I had to put Danny first." She took another sip of wine, "I lost touch with him when camp ended and we busted the guy. I suppose I could run a trace and find him through the department. Kind of unethical through."
Janet countered, "Not if it's for child support."
She shook her head, "It's not his fault. He didn't do anything wrong. I knew what I was doing. I was an adult. I suppose if I were to track him down now it would be for the sex again." she confessed.
Janet teased, "Just this time don't get pregnant."
"Or a disease." she nodded in agreement a but buzzed. "Shit!" She held up the empty wine bottle, "We finished this off already." She then stood up and went to the kitchen counter and got another bottle of wine.
Sam assured, "I think we have had enough. Janet and I both have to drive home."
"You two can crash here." she offered. "The sofa does pull out into a bed." she plopped down with a wine and opened the bottle. "Rather have you two stay than get in an accident." She poured the next round.
Sam picked up the glass, "I guess I can crash."
Janet figured, "Might as well." She too had another glass of wine.
Sam stated, "Mark told me you used to work for the F.B.I. What did you do there?"
"I investigated cults." she told her. "Turn out there are a lot of cults and it's a much bigger problem than I thought it would be. There are many different cults. Some worship the devil and others like to focus on Ancient Egyptian deities: Moloch, Isis, Ra, Baal and I think there could be one for Apophis. The most active cult is Baal. They pronounce it Ba'al. Very powerful cult and in high places. They got this dude leading it. They say his eyes glow when he's angry. All I know is they took down a plane full of innocent people to sink my case and they threaten to go after Danny if I didn't drop it." She another sip, "Bunch of fuckers. If I could I would burn down that whole damn cult."
Janet and Sam traded glanced alarmed.
Sam asked, "Do you by any chance have any files on this cult from your investigation?"
She nodded, "I do! Funny…Jon saw the file and nearly freaked. The Colonel's friend, Teal'c bears the symbol of Apophis. I wonder if there is a connection." She noticed the disturbed look on Sam and Janet's faces. "What? Am I doing Fox Mulder again? I haven't even gotten into the Ancient Alien theory yet. That will blow your socks off."
Sam asked concerned, "What is the ancient alien theory, Jackie?"
"That the pyramids were actually landing pads for space ships. I know it sounds nuts. My ex came up with it but I think he was onto something." she stated loosely and took another sip of wine.
"I gotta ask." Janet spoke up. "Was your ex's name Daniel by any chance?"
She nodded, "Yup!" She rubbed her face. "I'm tired. I'm going to bed. You think you can keep an eye on the kids for me?"
Sam nodded, "We can do that."
"Great!" she stood up and felt a bit light headed from the wine. She mentioned, "You two are a bad influence on me. You got me drinking half the night." She made her way out of the kitchen feeling exhausted.
Sam looked to Janet, "You don't think…?"
"He sounds like our Daniel to me." she agreed. "And the Ba'al cult. That's an issue."
"It sure is." Sam agreed.
