A/N: Off the bat, we're getting into some "controversial" subjects. I trust you all won't cause a fuss over it. You'll see what I mean soon enough. We got lots to get into, since the trip is next chapter. So far, I'm on course for my expected "halfway point" of the main story. Hope you've been paying attention too, there was a lot of important stuff in the last chapter that might go over your head.

Chapter 28

11/29

The days to the deadline grow closer. "Himura's" was just given a visit by both Souji and Ayame to check on the progress of Souji's gift for Yukiko. While the owner didn't show it directly, he declares it will be ready on time on December 3rd. That's plenty of time to ship it the next day and get it to Yukiko's home by her special day.

With the time spent in the store being far less than expected, Ayame suggested the two hang out a bit in Inokashira Park for a bit longer, her expression was a bit pleading, akin to Rise whenever she wanted something. She really was a Risette fan.

The Wild Card and Miss Popular have already settled in, the cool wind blowing past them as another reminder that the end of the 2nd term was fast approaching. Only a few more weeks until Winter Break; and then, after one more term… Graduation. It was something Souji was looking forward to, but Ayame… was only feeling more conflicted towards. Sitting on a bench together, people watching, Souji opted to speak up on something he felt was important.

"Thanks for coming along with me, Ayame. I appreciate it."

"Oh, it's no problem, Souji-kun. I only wish we could see her reaction when she gets it." She waves her hand horizontally, attempting to downplay his gratitude.

"I considered holding on until Christmas, but I think she deserves this now. Plus, it gives me something to look forward to when returning home."

"Hah… you really love that town, don't you?"

"More than you could ever know…"

"Then… since we'll have time after we graduate… How about I go visit? I can drag along Katashi as well if it helps. That, and he can split the hotel room we take."

"You know… most girls I know wouldn't trust sleeping in a room, alone with a guy." Souji remarks, trying not to imply anything nefarious about Katashi's character.

"We've known each other for a while, remember? He's got no interest in me, and I'm the same with him; but, you already know the whole school thinks otherwise."

"Yeah, right. All schools love to play matchmaker, it seems."

"Haha, yeah! I think we talked about that months ago…" Ayame lowers her head in amusement before raising it back up, now recalling something else they spoke about before. "...Say, how's Rise-chan been? She's been a little quiet since that incident."

"I can't speak of details, but… she's got something special planned. I'll tell you more when we get closer to that day. But she's fine."

"I see. Well, I'll look forward to seeing her again." She sighs, eyes closed for a few seconds, as if lost in thought. "...Hey, Souji. Do you think I'm a little… strange?"

"Strange?"

"Yeah. I mean, it doesn't weird you out that I don't have a thing for many guys?"

"...Not really. I just assumed you're more focused on yourself."

"Hm, well, that's kind of true… but lately I've started to realize… there were people I liked."

"Hm?" This caught his attention. Was it a classmate? Or someone outside the classroom? "You said 'were'. Does that mean you don't see them like that anymore?"

"Mhm. I kinda had to however… the person in question was you."

Now that caught him off guard.

"What…?"

"That was before I found out you were dating Yukiko-san. I had a bit of an infatuation for you… You've got such a strong character about you, Souji-kun. I wouldn't be surprised if any of those other girls from Inaba had a thing for you at one point too." Well, there is one girl who comes to mind. Although her mind now trails to a different young man.

"I see. I didn't realize you had an interest in me like that."

"It's okay! You and Yukiko-san look so cute together, anyway!"

"...You said that 'there were people'... that makes me wonder if there's someone else you find interesting."

Ayame stiffened up as he said that. He really is a perceptive one. Another notch of greatness to his character.

"...Y-Yeah… you're right. I just… don't know what to think of it."

"You okay? This sounds like it's been eating at you more."

"Well… it's more like I'm afraid you'll think of me as strange."

"It's okay, Ayame. I'm not going to judge you for whoever you like."

"Aw, thanks… you promise?" She sounds nervous, her face's expression getting a bit tense. He has no clue as to why she's so nervous. He already knows it's not Katashi that she's interested in.

"I promise."

"Thanks." With a polite nod, she takes a moment to center herself. With a deep breath, she exhales to help her spirit find some sense of calm. Now, feeling as ready to talk, she speaks, opening up with her conflict. "The thing is… this isn't considered normal."

"Normal?"

"Y-Yeah…. And even then, I'm not sure if this is just admiration, or infatuation, or… I dunno."

"You're really torn about this."

"Mm… I'm torn because… you know this person too. And… And… I don't know what to think." She felt a cold sweat go down her neck. This was more nerve wracking than trying to hit the bulls eye to win her archery tournament. "I… think Rise-chan is really great. And very pretty…"

"...Oh, I see now." Now it all makes sense.

"...I know. It must be so weird for a girl like me to see another woman as attractive like that…" She can't maintain eye contact with him. Her thoughts race, assuming the worst.

"No, there's nothing wrong about that. Or anything wrong with being uncertain on who you find attractive in any sense."

"You… you serious, Souji-kun?"

"Very. It's not my place to say what you may or may not find attractive to you, but there's nothing wrong with exploring those options."

"Souji-kun…"

"I know someone back in Inaba who went through a similar thing. If you do come by, I'll introduce you to them. They also felt pressured to liking what society deemed they should and should not like, but… that person already figured out what to do. And, I think you can find your own answer like they did too. At least one day."

"Really? I was unsure if anyone could understand this…"

"There's probably others… but I understand. The way the world is right now… they might not be welcome to that idea. But maybe with time, that can change… For now, you can rest assured; my friends and I won't ever judge you for that. Rise won't, Yukiko won't… and I bet even Katashi won't shame you for it either."

"S… Souji-kun…!" Ayame's closed off interests now laid bare, and she finds it difficult to not well up with some tears. "I… not even my teammates or my other friends know about this… I'm just afraid that they'll think less of me for it…!"

"It's hard to look at yourself and show sides you're not used to showing off to other people, isn't it?" She gasps at his words. He's exactly right! "Don't worry. I'll have your back. Being true to yourself and trusting your friends is what matters now."

"S… Souji-kun…" Fighting back the urge to cry, she smiles through her tears. "Thank you…!"

"Thank you for trusting me. I can't imagine how hard it was to tell me that."

"You know… I'm a bit jealous Yukiko caught someone as great as you…" she jests, only meaning that partially.

"Hah… Sorry about that. She knows what she wants." Souji plays along, finding her envy to be amusing, and the feeling was mutual as the two share a quiet laugh together.

12/04

December. The end of the year. Yet, the colder month often had the most excitement. Christmas season is here, at last! Sales were being propped up, season treats were being made or prepared, and the atmosphere was more… joyful. Tis' the season, after all. But that was the last thing on Souji's mind. His thoughts were focused on what he held in his hand minutes ago…. A special gift for his beloved. It was finished yesterday, and he had a visit to the local arcade. The clouds were black. Rain was about to come forth, pushed by a disturbance. Cold rain in ten degree Celsius weather didn't bring down the passion in his heart, the excitement of Yukiko calling him to tell him how much she loved it. He knows it will succeed at making her happy.

Finally approaching the door, the droplets barely starting to come down, he had no need to use his umbrella yet. Although that will not be the case when it's time to go home.

Entering, he immediately saw a friend in the back by the vending machines. He was on time once again.

"Masato, it's good to see you."

"Heya, Souji. Been a good couple of weeks."

"Indeed it has. I didn't keep you waiting long, now did I?"

"Nah, I just got here too early. With Rise getting more training done until we leave later this month, I've not had much to do other than train myself." Masato took a seat on the bench behind him, likely waiting here this whole time for Souji to arrive.

"I see. So her trip… it's finalized? And you're going too, right?"

"Yeah. They secured that spot and the exact time she'll pop in. Inoue has kept the details under wraps, but when it gets closer to that day… I'll be sure to pass that info to you."

"Thanks. We all plan to support her as best we can. It's a shame that it's so far. Otherwise, I might have considered going to the concert."

"...I think you and I need to stay away from loud music and rowdy teenagers for a while longer." Masato forces a smile and a laugh.

"Yeah, true… but aren't you going to be there too?"

"Of course. But I'll be on more high alert. I doubt I'll be in the crowd… Likely I'll be watching from the side of the stage or in the back."

"I see. When do you leave and when will you be coming back?"

"I believe… The 19th is when we leave. And we'll be back on Christmas Eve. I think."

"Well, why don't you go to Inaba? I plan to go back on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. The second semester's last day is the 24th. Which is great for me, but in exchange I'll likely be back in school earlier than most people."

"That works out for you then. At least, since this will be your last Winter Break in High School. College semesters are much more forgiving."

"Yeah, that's true. I've already sent some applications to Universities around Tokyo. They're close to home and I can just take a train every day. No need to live in a Dorm if I get the right place."

"Like money's an issue for your parents, though!" When Masato said that, Souji wavered.

"Yeah… I don't wanna depend on my father's finances if I can help it."

"Right… is that much of a prick to you? No offense."

"None taken. I'd rather not get into too many details…" Even Yukiko doesn't know much about this. "But I want to prove I can accomplish my goals on my own; without his help."

"I… see. Sounds like he's a very demanding father." Masato feels some sense of guilt for bringing him up.

"It's alright. I just want to move past him. For now, I'm stuck dealing with him. Yukiko's parents want to meet him and my Mother."

"Oh yeah, I remember that. Seta-san agreed to it, so that's likely happening while you're in Inaba?"

"Yes. They'll have to wait until they're off for the New Year break, so it's likely going to be in January."

"I can only hope it goes well. The Amagis like you, so this is just a formality to them. But with him…"

"-Anything can happen."

"Right."

"Speaking of… I just shipped Yukiko's birthday present. She'll get on that day. I made sure of it."

"Oh, that's what kept you! So, what is it?"

"Haha, I can't tell you that. Can't risk Yukiko interrogating you for answers." At last, another smile on Souji's face appeared.

"I can't tell Yukiko-san that!" He scoffs with amusement. "Then let's race. I win, you tell me what it is."

"Hah, that's fine. Looks like Masuda-san isn't here this time. You'll do for being my opponent."

?/?

In an isolated part of the woods deep in the countryside, a lone, bright-haired individual resides in a building. Staring into the TV, the screen rippled across its surface.

"You mean to tell me you can't find anything on this guy? Ain't you supposed to have info on anything I could ever want to know!?" It was Sho Minazuki, still neck deep in scheming his next plan.

"I have found others with this name, but they do not match his description. I doubt you care for the life of a seventy year old man."

"Ugh! Then what gives? His name is Masato Yoshida! We picked up that name from his place in the TV world! So what are we missing?" His hands clasp on each edge of the television, shaking it with fury.

"If the name isn't working… then perhaps we need a different method to search up this individual's life story."

"If he's working with Kirijo and the other bastards workin' alongside her… then let's look through their backstory. If we can find a clue through that… then maybe…"

"Excellent. I shall begin my search through their histories. It may take some time, but I'll find the truth of this Masato soon enough."

"Good. Not having the info of even one of these schmucks is a risk. But even if I'm pushed to the brink, I got a surprise for them next time we meet. That Souji Seta won't get the upper hand next time!"

12/08

Yasogami high still remains consistent to when Souji saw it for the final time in March. The familiar halls, the plain walls, and the occasional creak in some steps. It could be said Inaba has not changed all that much physically. But the people… have definitely started to make a change. The echo from their triumph over Izanami is still felt to this day. The people will never realize it, but with her gone, they can turn the corner at last. It's all on them, but the possibility is there.

One thing that also has not changed that much is the Amagi Inn. The workers remain, the culture has only evolved to center around supporting one another on top of the customers. Masato was the only departure, but the group still marches on.

The Young Heiress has come back home at last, eager to kick back for a moment before having to run the evening routine, and then… wrap it up with some light reading. Of course, today was not a normal day. Not just any day, it was her day. And everyone let her know about it. Many told her Happy Birthday as she turned eighteen years old. She's of age, a young adult. And yet she finds herself still not quite fully prepared to take on the adult world. And that's okay; she has others who can still guide her until it's time to leave the nest for some time.

Her mother had informed her of a package that arrived this morning after Yukiko left for school. She doesn't recall any mention of receiving a package from anyone… nor did she order anything. Her Mother didn't seem so concerned, since it was left in her daughter's room to inspect in privacy.

With no other choice, and still some time remaining until dinner, she opted to go forth to her bedroom, wanting to know exactly what this is. Even her mother had no clue, a rare moment to respect her daughter's privacy for once.

Slowly opening the door, she quickly noticed the simple package resting on her table. What could it be? Her head tilts, but the answer will be easier to find out by opening it instead of inspecting it!

Descending before her table, she grabs the package and spots the label. It's… Souji's gift. And it was his address written on the label that was on the top of the box.

He didn't tell her anything. That's unusual. Tearing off the tape between two flaps on the front of the box, it was best to probe for the answer the direct way and not by letting her mind fill in these wide blanks.

When she opened the face of cardboard surrounded by inflated plastic bubbles meant to hold the gift in place… She spotted another box. And an envelope underneath it. This box was wooden, likely handmade. It wasn't too complicated. No fancy colors, or shapes. Just a handmade, durable box with a smooth feeling against her fingers.

"Now… what could this be?" She asks herself as she notices the box can be opened from the other side. Having it face her, Yukiko slowly opens it, eager to see what this present was. But it wasn't what she witnessed inside that got her attention. It was what she heard.

Notes play, she recognizes immediately that it's a music box. But… as she let it play, it became quickly apparent what the song is to her.

"Mosaic Pieces…." Of course he would choose a song only those two would know. She holds the music box as it delivers its final notes. Now she wants to inspect it. Seeing the side, she notices the wind up lever used to make it play music. The inside of the box itself had the standard pieces that make a music box, but the underside of the lid had Yukiko's name engraved on it. Its design was simplistic on the outside, but Yukiko didn't mind one bit. It catered to what they knew and shared between each other. It was all she needed to know to declare this a Wonderful gift.

There is the other part to this gift… the letter that was resting just underneath the music box. Pulling it out from the cardboard box and seeing her name on the front of it, she wondered what was written beneath its surface. Pulling it out with some haste, she opens its contents to see a handwritten letter.

"Dearest Yukiko,

It's been quite some time, hasn't it? I'm hoping you're well. I had gotten this finished with barely any time left to mail this. I hope it reached you on your birthday.

I can't wait to come back home for Christmas. I'm envious that this gift will be here for you until that day. All those days, we could be spending time together; you, myself, Nanako, and all our friends. I want to enjoy those days as best we can. I've been prepared for this, but perhaps I'm being a bit selfish. Still, I hope you enjoy this present. And I hope to see you on Christmas Eve.

Oh, and I know you remember that song.

Your beloved,

Souji Seta"

Yukiko's smile was beaming. What a selfish man she's dating. What a Wonderful man he is. She wants to call him right now, but… she desires to hear that song again.

She started to wind it up, noticing it stops when it reaches a certain point, likely that it plays the entire track once and then stops so you start from the beginning again. Letting her grip go and making sure it was open, she let it play.

"Mosaic kakera Azayaka ni utsusu Kako no uso mo ayamachi mo Keshiteshimaitai to omoeba omou hobo Furikaereba soko ni aru Start line mada susun ja inai Mou ichido yume wo Hiroiatsumete miyou Mosaic kakera Hitotsu hitotsu tsunagiawasete Egaiteyuku Anata ga kureta deai to wakare mo…"

She sang alongside the slowed rhythm of the music box, recalling the words after hearing it more than a few times on her own. Her words matched the pace of the newly crafted box well, but even once it finished, she couldn't help but rewind it and play it again, humming along this time. She might be a little late to dinner.

Flashback to 12/03

"Here you go, Souji-san! Your custom made Music box for your lovely lady! I kept it simple per your instructions in case you two wish to alter the design later!" The owner of the store, Hibiki Himura had placed the newly finished box on the counter for Souji to observe and play.

Sure enough… he got the notes exactly right. Has he been involved with music in the past?

"Oh, that's so wonderful, Seta-chan. It sounds lovely!" Hisano smiles with her cane tapping the floor.

"It's perfect, Himura-San. I'll be shipping this tomorrow. I still need to have my letter finished that leaves alongside this."

"A letter? You still haven't finished it?" Hisano asks with piqued curiosity.

"I've tried, but… I'm not sure how to begin or what to say. I've never written one of these before."

"Ahaha, oh is that all? I'm surprised you're struggling, Seta-chan. The answer is simple. You just need to speak honestly. And once you do… the words will come naturally. Because they are earnest in how you feel. That is why my Husband wrote me many letters… because he always wanted to speak to me, and was definitely not shy about letting me know." Hisano smiles nostalgically, her in-law releasing a bursting laugh.

"Ahahahaha! You seem full of confidence, m'boy! You mustn't stagnate now! This is your best chance to let her know how you feel! It can't be as hard as telling her you love her, now can it?"

They both have a point. This isn't uncomfortable, but once the letter is sent… he cannot change it. His words must be written to his design as best they can. Souji has the most amount of courage one man could reasonably need, so surely sending the love of his life one letter isn't a challenge, right?

"...I see your points. Then I'll do just that. I'll speak from the heart."

"Keep practicing and you may sweep her off her feet like my husband did for me, ahaha…"

End of Flashback

Souji has just finished taking his shower, now drying up and putting some of his clothes on to sleep in. Just as that's happening… his phone starts to buzz against his study desk. She's late.

Answering it with the speaker on, at least he now knows she got it today like he had hoped.

"Happy Birthday, Yukiko."

"Mhmhm, thank you, Souji-kun. It's wonderful."

"The music box, or the letter?"

"Both." She shakes her head, her hair still wet. "What are you doing?"

"I just finished taking a shower. I was getting changed for bed."

"Oh, I got back from my bath as well. My hair is still drying out."

"I'm surprised you took so long to call."

"I had dinner shortly after looking at your gift… and I assumed you had to eat as well."

"I had dinner with Rise and Masato. They're leaving soon."

"Oh? She's going to be a surprise guest at that concert, right?"

"Yeah. They're leaving on the 19th. They should be back in time for Christmas."

"Oh, that's good! I was hoping we all could be here for the Holidays while we still can."

"Of course. I will be there no matter what." He speaks with a smile, staring at the calendar. Can it be Christmas Eve yet?

"Wonderful. I can't wait for Christmas now…" She just finished slipping on her nightgown. "Actually… What are you going to do? Will you make it on time?"

"I hope so. Christmas Eve is the last day of our second semester."

"And your parents are going to be home? Or are they coming with you?"

"They won't be on New Year's break until the 30th. So they won't be in Inaba until January 5th. I think they return to work on the 7th. And I have school on the 9th."

"I see. Are they staying home for Christmas Eve?"

"No. They intend to be out all night for it."

An idea formed in Yukiko's head as he said that. A bold one.

"Well… why don't I go to your place that day? We can have the night to ourselves."

"Really? But, you would have to hurry. The trains that leave to and from Tokyo will likely have limited hours…"

"That's no problem. I can immediately head for the train station after school. We can leave for Inaba in the morning together and be here in time for the afternoon." This was forming quickly in her mind. If they had it here, Nanako and her Dad would be in the house this time. And while she isn't against spending time with her… she wants to be selfish and have one night alone with Souji.

"...You're not going to budge on this, aren't you?"

"Would you consider it more if I said 'please'?" He knows she won't actually say that. That tone of hers… it's clear this is what she wants to do. Compromise is possible with her, but… they both seem to be selfish people. A selfish couple.

"Fine. I'll have a cake ready."

"Wonderful. I'm looking forward to this!" Now there's something big to look forward to! A Christmas date at his place. Finally… he can show her this million yen view. And she can see his room properly. There is much to look forward to indeed! But this wasn't the end of their conversation. As they talked for almost an hour, some points escalated in certain ways. Best to keep that energy for Christmas Eve, though.

12/15

"That concludes our meeting for the end of the year review. You are all dismissed." The CEO of the most influential group in all of Japan spoke with an empowered tone. Mitsuru Kirijo, the few who truly know her mainly see her eliminating Shadows, but this is only one aspect of her life. When that isn't the focus, she runs the Kirijo Group with pride, and a goal to restore its name after her grandfather's dubious desires sullied it to an almost unrecognizable state.

Here she was at the meeting room where she had her reunion with the main Shadow Operatives back in August, but this time for its actual purpose, to serve as a gathering hub for the members of the board to discuss all matters of business. From the state of the company, to how well or poorly it's doing financially, reputation-wise, and the possibility of meeting goals. Some, but not all of the possible topics of discussions are settled here in this very room.

Most members had begun taking their leave. Mitsuru, donning a black pantsuit with a white button up, realizes she has something to speak of with one of the members.

"Seta. A moment, if you will." She approaches the older man, who has just stood up, ready to return to his office.

"Kirijo-san? How can I help you?"

"How have you adjusted to this level of the business? Is all well with you?"

"Never better, ma'am. Keeping busy is how I live. And there is no greater honor than contributing to the company at the highest level." Osamu speaks with pride. His work ethic shines through. This is where he wants to be.

"I see. I'm surprised you volunteered to continue working for the days between Christmas and New Year's. Oftentimes from what I've heard, someone must be chosen."

"It's no trouble with me, Ma'am. As I said, keeping busy is how I live. And… if I may speak personally, I have family business in early January. So I'd like to make sure that time is open, just in case."

"Ah, I see. It's important you know when to ease up and relax when the opportunities arise. It will be no good to see you succumb to fatigue."

He's heard this time and again, but coming from the boss? Osamu cannot just dismiss it like he always has.

"If I may, Kirijo-san. I appreciate the concern, but I believe you as well could benefit from your own advice. We all appreciate the many hours you pour into the company and your family's name, but you should also relax and enjoy the Holidays. Next year shall not be any easier."

He may have meant that from a company aspect, especially as technology continues to surge, and the internet marches on, further connecting the world. But to Mitsuru… she was recalling Sho Minazuki. His schemes have not come forth since August. She is expecting him to make his move soon.

But Osamu raises a point…

"I suppose you are correct. I shall definitely enjoy the Holiday off. But I do hope you too take time to unwind. 2013 looks to be ready to challenge us all."

"I agree." He bows, grabbing his suitcase. "Then, if nothing else needs to be said, I shall return to my office."

Just then… Mitsuru realizes something. Seta… could it be?

"Excuse me." She speaks without thinking.

"Yes?"

She can't ask that. There's no way. What are the odds that young man she met in Inaba was related to this man? Both are named Seta… and Aigis confirmed that Souji Seta lives in Tokyo. She never looked into personal details like family. Such things don't mean much in the situation they're at. At least, assuming they play along with Sho's game.

"...Never mind. Carry on."

"By your leave, then." Osamu, confused for a second, quickly pushes that notion away and walks away, ready to continue working.

Should she look into this? …No, she promised not to do such a thing. She shall not give those children reasons to suspect her and the Shadow Operatives. Speaking of…. Perhaps she should head down to speak to some of them.

Hours after this meeting, Mitsuru had changed into clothes more fit for training, gym wear which would catch many who know her professionally off guard.

She has finished observing Masato's progress… and now she believes she has seen enough.

"Yoshida. Aigis. That is enough."

Aigis immediately ceased hostilities… if you can call fighting defensively that.

Masato's Persona returned to him, the imposter only inhaling through his mouth as much air as he could… feeling like progress was halted.

"You have grown since I last saw you practice at the end of September. But you have much more to go if you wish to partake in our missions."

Masato could only sigh, at this point feeling like he'd be better off trying to break a brick wall with his bare hands. This isn't working. Something isn't right here.

"Masato-san, may I suggest something that might help you grow as a Persona user?" It was Aigis who stepped up to offer something, and not the likely candidate Mitsuru.

"Hah… okay. What might that be?" He speaks while catching his breath.

"Training the physical aspects of your body and Persona is one of achieving growth… But I must know, have you done any efforts to grow beyond that? That is not the only way your Persona can gain further strength."

"You mean, as in studying?"

"Growing the mind is a way… but I do not believe you are understanding this the way I do." Aigis ponders, contemplating how to word this right, her hand resting on the top of her chin, two fingers pushed up across her lips.

"Ah, I wish to say… growing not just in strength, but in character is how our Personas can grow. Do you believe you have grown adequately as a person since you acquired your Persona?"

Well now…. This had him at a loss for words. Has he grown? It's hard for him to say.

"Actually, I can pinpoint the recent surge in power based on every single time you have trained here."

"Wait, how did you-?"

"I have access to the camera footage, and have studied all your fighting habits to gain an understanding on how best to train with you." She cuts Masato off, Mitsuru's brow shifting, doubting Aigis for having that as her lone reason. The Android does have that streak of mischief after all. "I calculated that during your training on the 10th of October, your Persona had a 12% surge of growth. I cannot comprehend what caused this, but if something personal happened before then… that could explain the leap you took. Do you have any idea what that might have been, Masato-san?"

He looks towards the ground, contemplating what happened before that time-and suddenly, recollection, and thus, revelation. Days before that time he sparred with Akihiko, he and Souji fought those guys… but that wasn't the only thing that happened. He was drugged and pushed to his physical and mental limits. And the next day… he and Rise started dating. His mouth was slightly agape, obviously spotted in Aigis' sharp synthetic eyes. She can determine he has found his reason, but he was still digging through the events. What pushed him to lead to that. The slight increase in power isn't the cause; it is the effect. So what caused it? The Impostor asks this question over and over in his mind? Was getting with Rise the reason? No, if that's all it took; Junpei, Souji, and Yosuke would be the strongest Persona users of all time. But it just keeps looping back

What caused this to happen?

"I… have some idea. But I don't believe I can determine why that is."

"...I comprehend." Aigis, in a rare show of respect to privacy, opts to not push the answer out of him.

"If I may…" But Mitsuru may decide otherwise. "Perhaps that's the key. Didn't you tell me you intend to leave Tokyo soon?"

"Ah, yes. Lady Mitsuru, I told you I'm one of Rise's guards, yes?" She only nods in confirmation, insisting he continues. "Well, she's going to Sapporo in a few days. I intend to accompany her. And once that's done, I'd like to go to Inaba for the Holidays over there. Rise insists that I go spend time with her friends… and I agree. But I want your approval before I go."

Mitsuru scoffs with a smile, eyes closed.

"It sounds like you intend to leave even if I say no."

"Not at all, Ma'am. I will stay if you say so." Duty over the self. Mitsuru hums a laugh to herself. Did she realize his problem? Or perhaps she is applauding Rise for her personal insights. That is a great skill to have.

"Yoshida. Kujikawa is a wonderful ally who will be invaluable to our mission. Keep her safe and keep her smiling. That's my mission for you."

"Yes, Ma'am! If that's what you want, then I'll do it."

"You needn't treat this so seriously. I believe spending time with them can unlock your potential. I have grown into a strong Persona user thanks to the friends I had around me. I believe this is what you need to focus on for the time being. Once this is over, I believe you may find our assumptions to be correct."

"You… really think so?" Is that what it was? Spending time with Rise and Souji?

"Enjoy your time with her, Yoshida. I believe she would appreciate that. Especially in a place so far from home."

"...Yes. I'll do my best, Lady Mitsuru."

"Very well. Now, I believe you should call it here. You have to rest before your trip. It won't be easy."

"I suppose that's true. Thanks; both of you."

"Of course."

"Helping a friend in need is good indeed" Where did Aigis learn that one from?

"If you want to truly grow, Yoshida; you should speak with them with honesty and a willingness to be open. It isn't easy, but I believe that will help you all for the future."

"Right… thank you, Lady Mitsuru." Easier said than done, for him at least.

Three days until Masato will accompany Rise to Sapporo. Right now, in Inaba, word of someone else's travel got the attention of two individuals at the Junes Food court.

"What's all this about? You wanted us all to be here together, and you're going to see Souji in Tokyo? C'mon, man!" Yosuke whined, Chie next to him to now calm him down.

"Yosuke, lay off her! It's not like she's gonna be there all week! It's just for the night and they'll both be here together on Christmas Day! Masato-kun and Rise-chan have that trip too!" As Chie brings it up, Yosuke now has to get her to shut it.

"Hey! You can't bring that up here!"

"Oh, right. Well, they're gonna be even later than Yukiko will be."

"Sorry about that, Yosuke-kun. It was a spontaneous idea, I'll admit. But it's better this way for both of us. You two are going to be spending time together, aren't you?" Her genuine apology shifted to a shot for blood. Both Chie and Yosuke's expressions looked so embarrassed. Yosuke was now put on the spot.

"U-Uh, yeah! Totally… alright, you win then. Just don't take too long. I don't wanna be stuck getting everything ready… and I need the cooks to actually help out." Cooking isn't in this couple's DNA, it seems.

"Yikes, Yukiko… you're scary sometimes."

"Mhmhm… just honest, that's all." She giggles with her cheek resting on her hand. This amusement will occupy her until Christmas Eve arrives.

Two more days until Rise leaves for Sapporo. Souji and Masato find themselves sharing a moment savoring some monjayaki in Tsukishima. It's their last time they will be in each other's company until Christmas Day.

"I'm glad she was surprised by your gift. But I bet next time she's going to be on to you." Masato had just finished his food, contemplating if he wanted seconds.

"Definitely. I'm more concerned that Yukiko will expect an even more extravagant gift."

"Hah… I think you'll be fine."

"What about you? You ready for that week up in the cold?"

"Yeah. It's a perfect time to go. The snow will start piling on that night and we're taking a plane there at around 9AM. We'll have to come back by train on Christmas Eve. Assuming there's nothing else that happens before we leave, of course."

"I imagine you won't be leaving Sapporo quietly."

"Yeah. The good thing about getting in is that no one is expecting Rise. And the media has no clue there's more than one surprise guest. Apparently another idol from another company has all the attention right now."

"That works for you both. You might even get a chance to tour some of Sapporo before the concert."

"Rise said the same thing, actually. We can explore the city before the concert goers start arriving."

"Good call."

"What about you, Souji? You and Yukiko-san got a date setup for Christmas Eve?" The subject shifts slightly, now Masato wants to know about Souji's own plans.

"Well, I was going to Inaba after school, but… it seems Yukiko has other plans." This remark has Masato tilting his head, perplexed by what Souji is inferring. "She wants to come up to Tokyo for a night while my parents are gone. Then we leave for Inaba in the morning."

"Whoa, Yukiko-san is bold… I assume you're going to be spending time in your apartment?"

"Most likely. Any location I could have picked for a nice dinner has been booked already. So… I'll just make something for us both at my place."

"That's unfortunate. But it sounds like a spur of the moment decision. Can't fault either of you for it."

"Yeah… still, why don't we all meet up in the morning and go together?"

"Oh, that's fine. Isn't Naoto-san going back the day before?" Masato quickly realizes there is a fifth person to consider.

"Yes, so we won't have to wait for her. She'll be waiting for us alongside everyone else."

"That makes it easier. I'll let Rise know. Just text us the time you want to leave."

"You got it."

"Actually, there was one thing I wanted to ask you about her."

"Sure, what might that be?"

"...Do you know what might be a good gift for her?"

"Oh, are you two exchanging presents?"

"Yeah. It was her idea." No, it wasn't.

"I see. Do you just not know what to get her?"

"Well, I have some idea of what she wants, but I feel like it's something she could get pretty easily on her own if she really wanted to. I want this gift to be like yours. More personal."

"...I get it now." Souji forms a small smile.

"Is there anything she might like that could work? I just need a theme or something to work off of. And then I'll try and get the gift tomorrow night."

"Well… there is one thing you can get…" Souji trailed purposely, Masato on the edge of his proverbial and literal seat.

"What, what would work?" He speaks in an almost panicked tone, making it clear he needs this information.

"Whatever is from you will work. As long as it's something you like that you think she'll enjoy… it'll work."

That… didn't help at all. If anything, it left Masato in an even more unsure state.

"What's something she likes? And do you like that subject too? Even if it isn't the same exact thing, as long as you're in the ballpark, you'll get something that works."

"Well, she… likes music. I mean, that's her job. I do too, but, I'm more into Rock compared to her interest in Pop–." It hit him. The moment he paused, Souji's eyes closed. He left enough clues for Masato to piece it together on his own.

"Now you're catching on. I'll leave that part up to you."

Masato's gears were turning, he had ideas, but right now… perhaps some more food can go a long way with planning for tomorrow's search.

"...Say, you think we should order one more set before we go?" Masato inquires, realizing tomorrow he won't have another chance at good food in Tokyo for a little while. With packing and making sure everything is accounted for before he leaves… there won't be much time for anything else when all is said and done.

"Sure, I can handle another one." Souji raises his arm, ready to keep the night rolling just a little while longer.

It won't be long now. The big trip will arrive faster than they can blink. Rise's goals are back on track. And Japan isn't ready for the storm she's bringing. All her friends can do is support her when the time comes. But they'll be ready, the Idol and they themselves know that fact already.

A/C: Alright! This marks the end of this short arc, and we're onto the Holiday season! First is the trip to Sapporo. I left hint to Ayame's sexual preference before, but now it's clear, she's at a crossroads. This will come around later for a certain someone to show their own growth; you probably know who it is already. Did you like Yukiko's gift? That song she sang is a reference to Code Geass' second ending theme, Mosiac Pieces. That will be a chapter title soon. I considered this one, but... there's a better moment later. I do wonder if their moment felt a bit short, however. I'll leave you all up to that. Don't forget, we're seeing them again real soon once Christmas Eve arrives. I got scenes for all three pairs. Chie and Yosuke are due for some conclusion towards their resolved conflict. And rounding back to our third pair... what will Masato get? Be creative with this one, it's an old concept lost to time. The charm of it is impossible to recreate these days, but it was a novelty back then. You'll see soon enough. If any of you guess what it is however, I will be impressed and shout you out. Your only hint is that music is involved.

Speaking of music, today's Musical Reference is "Somebody to Love" by Queen. We got a bit of a double whammy for who this song speaks for. Ayame is the obvious one.

Last thing to note, I hope you enjoy the Osamu drops here. They may feel out of place, but as you know, he's on a collision course with Yukiko's parents, so it's important we establish how he acts in much more manageable situations. Next time, however, it's all about Rise and Masato. Save for small cameos, it's just these two as the focus for the next chapter! See you up North!
