A tired sigh escaped her lips as she observed the train coming to a stop. She could still feel the chilling night breeze despite wearing several layers of clothing. Winter was setting in, and here she was waiting hours for some annoying kid when she could be in bed, drowning in wine or doing both.
"You seem tired." Her attention was drawn to the woman sitting next to her. She had shoulder-length brown hair and hazel eyes. Besides that, the most distinct feature was the beauty mark under her left eye. She only wore a classic business suit, and yet, for some reason, she didn't seem affected by the cold. Whether the woman was just hiding it or she really was unbothered, she could never tell with Atlassians
"Maybe it's because I'm wasting my time," she couldn't help herself. Throughout their wait, the woman didn't bother hiding the judgemental stare, constantly directed at her. She could feel herself being judged, mocked, and ridiculed. The people may change, but those looks never did.
The woman sneered at her and opened her mouth, but whatever rebuttal she had was stopped when the doors opened. They quickly stood up from the bench and started looking.
After five minutes of fruitless searching, she felt that she had done enough to not be accused of being lazy or negligent. It wouldn't be her fault if the wretched little thing got lost. Maybe he died from the cold. Was that incredibly unlikely? absolutely, but children were pathetic enough that she didn't write that possibility out.
"Excuse me."
Fuck!
When she heard a child's voice behind her, she was 80% sure it was her new ward. As she hesitantly turns to the voice any miniscule hope of getting out off, this was instantly shattered.
Blonde hair reminiscent of gold and emerald eyes. It was him.
Arthur Pendragon
She stood frozen as the boy looked at her in confusion, his head slightly tilted.
"There you are!"
They both flinched at being suddenly startled. For half a second, her instincts took over, and she reached back for the weapon she had long abandoned.
The woman chuckled as she approached them and intrestingly had a reassuring smile, something she never thought possible. "Sorry."
"I'm Jane. I work for child services. " So that was the woman's name. She's been told before but never to remember it.
"Arthur."
The woman, Jane, turned to her, and the reassuring smile quickly disappeared. She had a look of expectation.
She didn't even hide her annoyed expression as she looked the boy, "I'm Morgana, but you may refer to me as Morgan. For the foreseeable future, I'll be your legal guardian."
(scene change)
'She seems...'
'Unreliable and pathetic, I don't know anything about humans, but even I can see that she should not be entrusted with another human's life'
It was a rather blunt and ruthless way of putting it, but it was accurate. She was a mess, she reeked of alcohol, she had bags under her eyes, she was constantly slouched over and dragged her feet, she had a permanent scowl as if everything bothered her. All in all, she was rather disappointing.
The picture he'd been given of her was completely different from what she actually looked like. If it wasn't for her black hair and purple eyes, he would have never found her.
'Why would the humans trust her to look after you?'
'They don't trust her, but they don't have a better alternative. Remnant has an obscene casualty rate. Orphanages are packed to the brim, and the kingdoms can barely provide for them as they are. They'd do anything to have one less mouth to feed. As long as one adult relative is alive, they'd rather send you to them regardless of qualifications. This, of course, creates the problem of the kids often being abused or neglected.'
'Hmph, you humans truly are pathetic.' The mocking tone would have normally infuriated him and started another long fight between them, but all it did was remind him of HER.
Did she share the same sentiment? If she did, why would she help him then?
"What the fuck!"
"What's the delay!?"
"What's doing on!?"
Arthur was brought out of his thoughts when shouting of the surrounding drivers forced him look ahead to see the issue responsible for the traffic and he instantly grimaced at the sight.
It was Mistral's law enforcement, they were heavily armed with their weapons raised at a group of fanus. He saw some of them carrying signs with a symbol he'd seen on the internet before.
They were part of the white fang, a peaceful organization that fought for Fanus rights.
This was peace?
The fanus weren't armed nor were they doing any harm.
He remembered all the times people celebrated or praised the 'era of peace'. The kingdoms would not stop bragging about how good things are now thanks to them. Thinking back on it just made him disgusted, 'Nothing about any of this is actually peaceful.'
He couldn't help but wonder what Salem would do if she was in charge. Would she make things better or worse than Ozma?
Forget Salem. What would he do to change things?
'What are those creatures?'
'How do you not know about the Fanus? They've been on Remnant for as long as humans have.' Surely, the parasite must have at least heard of them?
'No, they have not. In my time, these creatures never existed, but humans did.' So humans were older than Fanus, not only did this sudden revelation contradict everything the world knew about history but it just further increase his curiosity at how old this thing was.
'I'll explain later.'
Ever since he came along, it seems like Arthur's full-time job was to be his personal teacher
(scene change)
Eventually, they managed to get through after the police arrested the protesters, but the memory of what happened was still present in his mind. Throughout the whole ordeal, Morgana didn't seem bothered by the fact that the Fanus crowd had been practically manhandled for no justifiable reason. Was Morgana racist? It seemed to another problem on the already long list of issues Arthur had with her.
Jane was only slightly better. When a Fanus was beaten within an inch of his life, she at least was concerned and shocked, but there was no outrage or anger at what happened overall.
"This is wrong," He didn't mean to speak out, but his mouth just moved on its own.
That bought forth rather interesting reactions from the woman
Morgana had laughed for the first he's been with her, but it was a normal laugh. It was a cold and mocking one. She was at him as if he were an idiot.
Jane had the same reassuring smile as before, but it had noticeably dimmed, making it come across as forced. She looked at him with pity.
"Listen, child. What you saw now is happening all across Remnant. Sometimes, they get it easily, but most of the time, they get it worse, much worse. Complaining about it isn't going to change anything. So unless you have the ability to get all of Remnant to listen to you, frowning and wagging your finger at us is just a waste of both our times," Morgana's usually bored voice was laced with amusement but Arthur could pick up on the bitterness in what she said and the way she said it. It sort of reminded him of Salem to a minor extent.
Jane sent Morgana a warming glare that stopped whatever more she was gonna say. Her tone and attitude just now showed how she would behave around Arthur. If she had her way, the boy would have been sent back to the orphanage he stayed at temporarily and not with a dropout huntress with an alcohol addiction and a long list of mental issues.
She looked back at the confused boy and tried a more gentle approach in order to fix the mess that witch made, "Arthur you have to understand that situations like this are more complicated than they seem. This was an illegal protest. There was a risk of things getting out of hand while the police were wrong to be so rough. They were not wrong for stopping it. The law might seem cruel, but you have to understand that it exists to keep us all safe, even if it's from ourselves." She spoke softly and slowly, which just made Arthur frown at how she was obviously talking down to him as if he was a child...well, he was a child, but he was a smart child.
Although what she said made sense, there was just something wrong with this whole situation. Something just didn't feel right. There was something wrong with them.
'Oh! My brother once told me about this. When humans are exposed to suffering for a long period of time, they become desensitized and would no longer have a major problem with it.' Is that what was wrong with them? It would explain it. How could he get them to see it the way he sees it... 'Wait, BROTHER?'
'Yeah, he's annoying and stuck up, the worst guy to be around.'
'Great, there's more of you.'
'DON'T COMPARE ME TO HIM.'
'STOP IT YOU'RE TOO LOUD.' He felt like someone set off an explosion in his head and had speakers to make it even louder.
(scene change)
'This is a problem.' After the Fanus incident, she felt it best if they took a detour and got some food to calm down. It was then that she realized some things about the boy.
Firstly, he was normal, he was cheerful and he behaved like any eleven year boy would. But considering the fact he had his friends, family and everything he grew up with taken from him in one night and it's only been a month since it happened.
She had experience with kids who behave normally after a tragedy. The best case scenario was that this was repressed emotions and the worst case scenario was repressed memories. No matter which one it was, it made it hard for the child to open up to therapists and everyone around them.
The second realization was that he was not right in the head. He'd often spend minutes staring into space-
Morgan suddenly stood up and walked away. Jane turned to see that she was going to the restrooms.
She then heard Arthur let out a sigh of relief before his bright green eyes bore into her skull. The boy that she spent the whole day with suddenly disappeared as she stared at a blank face, giving away nothing, "Let's talk."
(AN: Did you know I actually had written a completely different chapter 7 that picked up straight from chapter 6 but I was unhappy with how it ended up so I started from scratch and rewrote the whole chapter. That's why I was delayed cause I wanted to release it on Wednesday.
This chapter is longer than the previous draft, and in terms of quality, I feel like it trumps the other chapters. It's a one month timeskip after Arthur and Salem with him being picked up in Mistral by his new guardian, Morgana.
Yes, I know that Morgana is supposed to be an evil sorcerer queen in Arthurian lore, not a miserable drunk, but she'll grow and get to that stage through the story much like Arthur. I wanted to make her look like FATE Morgan but realized that she'd look like a Schnee so instead she looks like SMITE Morgan.
The Fanus thing was included after some thought because I wanted to show just how shit Remnant. This chapter showed what it's like for Fanus and orphans. The next chapter will show what it's like for the average citizen, and after that, I'm especially doing one for huntsman.)
