Four

"Ah, thank you, Higurashi-san," the blonde sorcerer's voice was bland. His face masked with boredom, he seemed almost unphased by the large gash in his shoulder when he turned to address her. The wound was hardly bleeding anymore, but Kagome easily recognized the wince that traveled up his spine with the slightest movement. It had caused the corner of his eye to twitch, though he covered it up well with a sigh of, "You didn't need to go out of your way to do this."

"Considering your flesh is turning black," Kagome resisted the urge to roll her eyes, "I'll have to beg the differ, Kento-kun." Men, honestly. Pushing up her sleeves a little, the dark haired priestess shook her head. "Your body looks like it's trying to fight off the foreign curse energy naturally on its own, but it's always better to be safe than sorry. Especially with such a nasty infection going on."

Nanami hummed lightly in response.

"Besides," she smiled, "Shoko-chan deserves a break every now and then, too. It wouldn't do anybody any good if she fell over from exhaustion."

"That's very considerate of you, Higurashi-san." Returning his apathetic stare toward the opposite wall, Nanami tipped his head to one side as she prodded the edge of his blackened flesh. The corner of his eye twitched again. "I imagine she's grateful for the reprieve."

"Heh." Kagome nodded mostly to herself once she was satisfied with her initial inspection of the foreign curse and the damage it had caused to the surrounding area. It would not have benefited either of them if there had been any lingering side effects waiting to blow up in their faces once she started. Even if it was all too obvious that Nanami simply wanted it over and done with. "I'm pretty sure she's just happy to go outside and smoke while I'm dealing with patients."

His dark eyes shifted toward her as her energy rose and lit up her hand.

"She keeps telling people she's going to quit, too," she sighed, before focusing on healing him. Infected tissue stitched itself back together beneath the gentle caress of her holy energy. The foreign energy purified with ease, his blackened flesh quickly returned to a brilliant ivory within a matter of seconds. Clapping her hands after she was done, Kagome smiled and said, "There, good as new."

The blonde sorcerer rolled his shoulder, nodding in satisfaction.

"Though, you're definitely going to need a new shirt," she said, clicking her tongue. "That one's seen better days." Turning her attention to the nearby cabinet Shoko kept, she stepped away from him. "Shoko-chan probably has one around here somewhere that'll fit you."

"That won't be necessary, Higurashi-san," Nanami informed her dryly. Rising to his feet, he lifted the pristine suit jacket that had been draped across the seat next to him. "I always keep an extra jacket on campus for occasions such as these."

"Oh!" Kagome waved her hand between them, realizing that she should have expected as much. Nanami had always seemed efficient, and as much as Satoru claimed otherwise, she doubted it was simply because he had taken up an office job for quite some time. Her cheeks dusted with color as she laughed at the thought, saying, "Well, in that case, I guess I should tell you just to be more careful next time. We wouldn't want you falling to pieces right after yo—"

"Oi, oi, oi."

The door slammed against the wall, causing Nanami to sigh and rub at the corner of his eye.

Whipping her head around, Kagome gaped at the sight of Satoru strolling into the room as if he had not just kicked an unlocked door open for no apparent reason. The bandages he had wrapped around his eyes made it difficult to discern where exactly he was looking. He leaned heavily onto one leg once he had their attention, one hand in his pocket, and made a show of sipping from the juice box in his other.

"Na-na-mi." Satoru's grin was full of teeth. "You ain't dead."

His expression flat, Nanami replied, "No."

"Shoko said you were about to kick the bucket," Satoru took another sip from his juice box, "and that's why you needed to take advantage of Kagome-chan's special healing technique."

The dark haired woman sputtered in response.

Shoko!

"Lose your other jacket?"

"Higurashi-san was merely being helpful." The blonde sorcerer shook his head, ignoring the question entirely. Shrugging on the suit jacket he had brought with him, he took his time popping the buttons back into place. Tugging the edge to straighten it back into place then, he turned his head back in her direction. "I'm grateful for her assistance."

"Ah!" Flustered by Satoru's unexpected appearance, Kagome clamped her mouth shut finally. Her smile was strained as she waved her hands in front of her. Her face darkened with the praise, embarrassed that Shoko had put her in this situation in the first place. "It's nothing, really! I'm always happy to help Shoko-chan whenever I'm here!"

Satoru clicked his tongue, taking another long sip from his drink.

Nanami hummed low in his throat, before turning to take his leave. He paused in the open doorway long enough to glance back toward her when she called out to him.

"Remember to be careful next time, Kento-kun!"

Nodding his head, he simply replied, "My condolences, Higurashi-san," and walked away.

"...Eh?" Kagome blinked in confusion.

…what in the world did that mean?

"Kento-kun?"

Startled by Satoru's sudden proximity, Kagome nearly fell over her own two feet in an attempt to step away from him. She squeaked in surprise when her face met the warm, soft fabric of his black jacket instead. Her voice was muffled in his embrace, as she spat, "Satoru-san!"

"Satoooruuuu." His head settling on top of hers, Satoru nuzzled her and whined, "I wanna at least be Satoru-kun."

She huffed, burying her face as it turned absolutely red at the thought.

"Kagome-chaaan!"

"No."

"Buuut!"

"No!"

Note: For anyone wondering, these are the rough ages of everyone currently featured -

Satoru: 23-25

Nanami: 22-24

Kagome: 20-23

I haven't picked an exact age for everyone, but these little moments are taking place between the time Nanami chose to return to being a sorcerer and Tsumiki was cursed.
