After he had collected Sara's things from their home, he found himself feeling lost. He had called the hospital and been informed she was asleep, and visitors would not be allowed until she woke up and was ready to see people again. As much as he knew she needed her space, and understood the need for solitude, he was concerned and he wanted to be there. Camping out in the hospital waiting room wouldn't benefit anyone, though, and he wasn't quite sure what to do with himself. Fortunately, Catherine was on top of things once again, and suggested they meet for coffee while they waited to hear from Sara.
He found Catherine already seated with two cups of coffee when he arrived at the address she had given him. He sat down across from her and gratefully picked up the cup she pushed towards him.
"So, she's kicked us all out today?" Catherine asked. "Did something happen?"
"She spoke with her doctor this morning. Brass and I were asked to leave while they removed her tubes, monitors and wires. When the doctor came out, he let us know that Sara had asked for some time alone and someone would let us know when she was ready for visitors." Grissom told her.
"Any idea why?" Catherine questioned, watching him carefully.
"She's always needed some time and space to process her feelings. This has been difficult for her, I'd imagine."
"And there's nothing more to it?" Catherine asked him.
"If there is, I believe Sara would be the one to ask, not me." Grissom answered.
"Uh huh. So there is more but you can't tell me." She stated, appearing to understand what he wasn't saying. Grissom kept his face neutral, not wanting to reveal anything and hoping Catherine would back off. "So. If there's nothing to say about Sara then how about we talk about you?" She suggested.
"And what is it you would like to know?" He asked, unsure if he should feel relieved or not.
"What are you planning to do now?"
"Well, I was thinking I would drink my coffee and possibly order something to eat. And then I'm going to swing by the hospital to drop off some things to my wife."
"Your wife. Well that's a good start. And what about longer term?" Grissom sighed.
"I need to figure out if Sara still wants me in her life." he admitted. "I wouldn't blame her if she didn't. Nothing I do will make up for the pain I've inflicted on her. But if she will let me try, I'm going to be there for her and learn how to be a good husband."
"Well, to start with, I'd suggest finding a job that doesn't keep you travelling around the world constantly." She told him, and reached into her bag to grab a folder. "This might be a good start." She suggested, handing it to him. Inside, he found a list of local job postings that she had printed out for him. He flipped through them, noting several with local universities or research groups until he came to the final one and raised an eyebrow at her.
"And what does the Eclipse need a retired entomologist for?" He asked her.
"I was thinking more along the lines of someone with investigative experience, and who reads people well." Catherine told him. "If hiring you is what it takes to keep your ass in Vegas, I'll create a job for you." She said.
"Well thank you. I appreciate that. But I've got several standing offers to teach at WLVU, and Ecklie mentioned that the lab is short staffed at the moment. I don't think finding a job will be difficult."
"Good. So get that sorted out sooner rather than later. Show Sara that you're sticking around. It will go a long way towards reassuring her you aren't going to run."
"I appreciate that. I'll make some calls this afternoon." Grissom said.
"And look, Gil. You're my friend. I'm here for you too. But you have got to know you've seriously messed up here. I don't know what happened, and I don't need to know. But I do know that if you hurt her again, there's a whole team of CSIs, lab techs and cops who will hunt you down and make you disappear. And I might even help them."
"I know." He said. "Trust me, I know." Their conversation was interrupted by a buzzing of their phones, first his and then hers.
"Well, it would seem Sara doesn't want visitors today?" Catherine asked. "Or is it just me she needs a break from?"
"No, it would appear she intends to be alone today." Grissom said, showing Catherine the text he had received while heaving a sigh.
"Seriously, Gil, what happened this morning?"
"She got some discouraging news from her doctor." Grissom admitted. "But I can't share her private medical information with you, Catherine. That would be betraying her trust."
"Is she going to be ok? How serious is it?" Catherine asked, concerned. "Should she even be alone right now?"
"She's going to recover. Her long term health, and her ability to work won't be impacted. And the doctor reassured me that if she wouldn't allow visitors then he would make sure someone checked on her regularly." He told Catherine, and he watched as she processed the information she had.
"So she's going to be ok, and no permanent disability or ongoing illness?" She asked.
"Yes, that's correct." Grissom said. "But it sounds like they're going to get her up and moving a bit today and that will help a lot."
"Yeah it will. Do they have an idea when she might be ready to go home?"
"Not that they've said. But knowing Sara, as soon as she can stand up she will sign herself out AMA."
"Not if we can help it. Look, I know she wants to be left alone but I'm going to offer to drop off something for her to eat later. Hospital food sucks."
"She will appreciate that. Breakfast this morning was rather unappetising. They brought her some pink meal replacement drink that smelled like the lab. She wouldn't touch it."
"I don't blame her! Those things are disgusting. I hope you found her something else?"
"The nurse got her a yoghurt and some cereal, and I picked up some fruit at her request, as well as some pastries."
"And Greg said he dropped off a smoothie and muffins for her this morning, but they wouldn't let him in."
"They wouldn't let Brass or I go back in, either. But I'll see if I can at least drop off her clothes."
