CHAPTER 1 : HIS FACE

Slaloming through the crowd, she was always showing her nocturnal smile on her lips. She was cheerful and friendly. A way, obviously, to attract and retain customers. Most came to listen to the Covey. They were singers and musicians who gave performances all over Panem. In the past, their success was spectacular. Unfortunately, after the recent events following the Games, their most precious bird had left its branch.

"It's not the same anymore," said a man while drinking his beer.

Holding her tray, Erin approached the man confidently. She had to do her best to cheer others up.

"At least you're still here," he said to her before she could even speak. "For how long though.. ?"

The young woman stopped, not knowing how to react. It was hard to keep smiling when an entire district was so depressed. Although she did not fear the peacekeepers, sometimes she was afraid too. How not to fall into paranoia ? Destiny was so uncontrollable, specially right now.

"I'll be here every night to refill your glass," Erin answered, trying to comfort him.

With a forced smile, the man raised his drink towards the waitress. Erin simply bowed her head before walking away.

Most customers knew Erin and perceived her as a symbol. Some had seen her grow up, she used to serve them at a very young age. She always did her best to help her family.

As she approached another table, she rolled her eyes. Among the group of boys, there was one she knew all too well. He was the reason her heart was having trouble to heal lately.

"What do I get you boys ?" she asked them innocently.

She memorized their order while ignoring the insistent gaze of the young man beside her. Erin nodded, informing them of her imminent return. Turning around, she walked toward the back of the warehouse. However, someone suddenly grabbed her arm.

"Let me talk to you."

"I don't think so," she replied.

"Erin, you refuse my explanations for months."

"For a reason."

Still avoiding his eyes, she pushed him away to leave.

"You won't even let me give you your birthday present ?"

"Fuck off Robin."

She did not want to give him more attention and left the area for good. Erin went to the back of the warehouse to join her team. She placed her tray on the bar counter, annoyed in spite of herself. Her attitude was not missed by her teammate Nikolas. However, he did not say a word. He knew that she hated to explain herself, especially about her private life.

The Hob was the perfect place for the people of district twelve to come together. It served as a black market, a meeting point for friends and also concerts. Erin had met most of her acquaintances here. She knew every corner. Playing hide and seek with Nikolas had long been her favorite activity during her youth. So, every time she encountered a problem like tonight, she wondered where she could hide. Away from her ex-boyfriend, away from the peacekeepers, away from the Capitol.

With her head resting on her hand, she looked at the crowd. Her eyes stopped once again, like several evenings before, on this boy. He was not a regular. Erin had been watching him for a while. He was still in his corner, arms crossed and staring at the stage. She had never seen him smile.

"He's cute," complimented the woman next to her. "Do you know him ?"

Erin jumped, shaking her head instinctively. Her response made Ruby smiled. She had developed a talent for not being seen or heard. Perhaps she had learned this during her years in the Capitol ? Ruby never talked about her past, the team just knew she had to run away to survive.

"I noticed him too," Ruby replied more seriously. "I feel like I've seen his face somewhere before."

Erin stared at him again. Since she knew everything about the Hob, not knowing him intrigued her. Taking her tray under her arm, she walked in his direction with determination.

Naturally, she stopped in front of him. She greeted him, using her best smile. She quickly lost it when she did not notice any reaction from him. He did not even look down to listen to her. Following his eyes, Erin turned to the stage. She was trying as best she could to understand why he was so interested in the show.

"Good evening," replied the boy next to him. "Please forgive our inattention. I'm going to have a beer. What about you, Coriolanus ?"

Realising the name she just heard, Erin stopped breathing. The world around her ceased to exist. Staring at the ground, she finally managed to put everything together in her head. His face, the Covey, his presence in the Hob. Raising her head, her eyes finally met his. Blue, beautiful but so cold. They stared at each other for a moment, the boy's face remained impassive. More than troubled, Erin regained her senses. She nodded before quickly disappearing in the crowd.

Erin rushed into the storage room which contained all the group's food and drinks stocks. Dropping her tray on the floor, her eyes were wide open. She had just seen the truth.

"Is everything alright ?" asked Ruby entering the room as well. "We saw you running like something happened."

Behind her, Nikolas was also confused about the situation. Observing her hand, Erin watched it trembling. She was holding a revelation, right in her palm. She did not know if revealing it now was a good idea. But, she could not help it. They needed to know, just as much as she did.

"You'll never guess who I just met."
