I think the fact that it was a life or death situation would make Kaidan wonder if he was just a port in the storm. It also deals with sexual tension and Kaidan struggling to remain professional after a long tedious month of not seeing Shepard.

No one is without fear, not really. We can pretend all we want, but at the end of the day, inside ourselves we know. Shepard is no different.
