Chapter 1: Inception.
September 1989
"Why did you have to invite him?" asked a boy, a few months away from becoming a teenager. He ran his fingers through his short afro and rested his elbow to his knee with a frown visible on his face.
Rain was gently tapping against a small hopper window high up on the walls of the room. It didn't matter that the windows were rather high up, it added to the calming ambience of the basement which he was in.
"Because Zack. He's my friend and I'm the only friend he's got. I thought it would be nice for him to meet the rest of our group" replied a slim, tall Asian girl. She crossed her slender legs underneath her and folded her arms to her chest, leaning towards the grill of the gas heater a foot or two behind her, the orange glow rebounding off her long black hair and illuminating their faces.
"But he's a freak Trini. He speaks weird" replied Zack, absentmindedly playing with the drawstrings of his black sweatpants.
"This is my house, So my rules. Remember, everyone called me a freak and other mean names just because I'm Vietnamese! You always stood up for me!" Trini had a look of both anger and sadness displayed on her pretty face as she looked at her friend.
"B-but you're special Trini. I was always bullied too remember, we fought those bullies and we stuck together and that's why we're best friends" he replied, sticking his thumb out and pushing it towards Trini. Why did she invite him. Has she got a new best friend he thought as he eagerly awaited Trinis response.
Trini just looked at him, unsure what to do.
"Will you be nice to Billy?" she asked, glancing in front of her towards a white door at the summit of a wooden staircase leading to the first floor. Billy was late, is he even going to come she thought
Zack glanced around at their other friends who were quietly observing. A pretty girl to the left of Zack with chocolate brown hair, tied up with a pink ribbon was sat next to Zack with her legs folded underneath her, looking between him and Trini. She was leaning gently and comfortably against a boy sat to her left with short black hair wearing a red superman t-shirt. This was her best friend. They had been best friends ever since she moved into his street a few years ago, two doors away. He looked after her like an older brother would. The entire group felt rather close with each other. Almost like fate had brought the four of them together.
"Zack, we've never played with him. We don't know him yet. Everyone deserves a chance, he might be cool." The superhero fanatic spoke first.
"Yeah I s'pose you're right Jason, OK Trini you got a deal" replied Zack as he looked away from Jason and focused on Trini. She gently pressed her thumb against his and they curled around each others thumb as their trademark move to show they were still best friends.
"Well now that's sorted, what are we playing today anyway. Truth or dare?" asked the girl with the pink ribbon holding her curled up hair into place.
"Yep truth or dare but Kim, this time we'll be playing with spin the bottle" replied Zack. Kimberly scrunched up her nose and pondered the game.
The kids were sat together in a circle on a grey rug atop a wooden effect vinyl floor. They each had a small cushion for comfort. There was a glass bottle in the middle of their circle, bowls of snacks spread around and 2 decks of truth or dare cards. There was one last unoccupied cushion in between Jason and Trini.
The door at the top of the stairs opened and a bespectacled boy walked in. His denim dungarees and white sweatshirt encapsulated by a blue puffer jacket.
His caramel brown hair was damp from the cool autumn rain dribbling away outside . His sharp features illuminated by the icy glow from the moonlight seeping through a window near to where he stood. He anxiously stared down at the group of friends at the bottom of the staircase.
"Hey Billy" Trini snapped her head up to see Billy stood at the top of the stairs.
"I'm glad you've made it. Come join us, I've saved you a space" said Trini waving up at the new addition and tapping the cushion next to her. Unknown to her, Billy had been sat around at home, in conflict of whether to come or not.
Billy clumsily and tentatively descended down the wooden stairs, which were creaking loudly with each step he took, he was gazing intently at his feet, almost as if he was controlling them with his steely blue eyes which were veiled behind his round spectacles.
He managed to struggle out some words as he reached the halfway point of his journey to the bottom . "I must apologise profusely for my punctuality today".
Zack glanced at Jason with raised eyebrows. Jason delicately shook his head and narrowed his eyes. Silently telling his friend to behave himself. Zack tried his best to hide what he thought was funny.
Billy had reached the bottom and hurriedly went to sit on the spare cushion without looking at anybody and as though by instinct, he read everyone's minds (they wondered why he was late) and continued his rehearsed speech.
"My father was rather busy at work today so my mother allowed me to come here by foot since you live within such a close distance from my home " explained Billy rather quickly as he positioned himself on the cushion next to Trini.
"Hey its okay Billy you don't have to say sorry" a quiet but rather calming voice spoke up, catching Billy off guard. His voice was just loud enough so everyone could hear him, gentle enough to entice Billy to converse with him
"You're umm Jason right? The karate kid" Billy responded, now sitting more comfortably and drying his glasses with a cloth he retrieved from his coat pocket.
Jason smiled at Billy and nodded followed by a quiet "Yeah".
Jason had started karate a few years ago, most of the kids at school called him karate kid. All he needed now was to find a Mr Miyagi to make it complete.
Billy still hadn't looked up yet, still cleaning his glasses intently as though they were a 12 million year old fossil he had just dug up.
"And you also recognise Kimberly and Zack from school right?" Trini interjected, turning her head and smiling at Zack, eager for him to fulfil his promise.
Kimberly and Zack waved at Billy who nervously waved back.
"It's nice to see you Billy" said Kimberly.
"Yeah, hey dude. Nice to have you join us" said Zack rather formally, laying his eyes on their new companion.
"Hello and thank you for having me" replied Billy.
"Not a problem Billy. Any friend of Trini's is our friend" stated Kimberly with a warm smile.
Zack looked like he was going to say something but Kimberly quickly changed the topic after sharing a glance with Jason. They knew Zacks loud mouth may stop their progress with their new friend.
"Oh Zack. Not truth or dare again. We're not babies anymore." replied Kimberly, putting an elbow on her knee and cupping her chin in her palm.
"No Kim. This is gonna be different. I got a whole new deck of cards for teens, most of us will be 13 soon anyway won't we" he replied, flicking a mischievous grin towards Kimberly
"Oooooh. This should be interesting" she replied grinning ear to ear, glancing at Jason and then looking around the circle at each of the participants in the room. The circle they were sat in was rather small and everyone was so close that their knees touched when they crossed their legs. But every one felt surprisingly comfortable, even Billy who had never been this close to any school colleagues before, felt surprisingly relaxed.
"I dunno Zack. What if these new cards aren't nice and we don't like what is on them. What if they make us do bad things?" Jason questioned.
Kimberly's bright smile began to fade. Jason looked at her apologetically but he had been rather over protective of Kimberly ever since they became friends, and he wouldn't stop anytime soon.
"Look Jase. We all have two pass cards. So we won't have to do everything. Plus it's not a bad game you know, I've had a look at the cards and there's nothing too bad on them. I promise." Zack retorted.
"Fair enough Zack, I trust you man." Jason replied as he looked sideways at Kimberly, who's smile seemed to be returning.
"Okay then, let's start" said Jason giving Kimberly a big smile. She beamed up at him delightedly.
Billy didn't say anything, he was very hesitant and nervous. He hated spontaneity, he preferred knowing exactly what he would be doing. But he knew he had to make friends, and soon. His pulse started to increase and his palms became very sweaty. He focused on his breathing to calm himself down. It's only a game Cranston. Pull it together and decrease your diastolic levels.
Trini leaned forward and spun the bottle, everybody looked on with nervous anticipation as the bottle silently spun around before slowing down and landing on Zack.
"Right Mr, truth or dare?" asked Trini
"Dare" shouted Zack grinning widely as if he had just won the lottery
Trini picked up a card from the pile "Don't blink for two minutes and sing the star spangled banner" said Trini
"Okay Ummmm. Oh crap that's not a good un" Zacks huge grin has vanished and was replaced by a look of concentration.
"I will keep record on my wrist watch" Said Billy raising up his left arm and waiting for Zack.
"OK thanks, I guess. I'm ready guys" Zack closed his eyes and cleared his throat.
"Oh, say! can you see by the dawn's early light" Zack started off strong, singing with perfect melody with his eyes wide open.
30 seconds in and Zacks eyes began to twitch. "Whose broad stripes and bright stars".
After one minute, his eyes began to water. His gaze fixed intently on a segment of the brick wall that enveloped the basement. "Oh, say! does that star-spangled banner yet wave" he started singing out of tune but still bellowed out the words.
Jason leaned into Kimberly and whispered in her ear "He won't be able to do it. We gotta help him" before turning back and shouting "CMON ZACK. YOU GOT THIS BRO"
Everyone joined in shouting words of encouragement which lit a fire under Zacks butt. 1 minute 45 seconds in, water was streaming down Zacks cheeks.
" In fully glory reflected now shines in the stream" Zacks melody was completely lost now. He ignored the tears dripping down his face and off his chin.
"10 seconds remaining" came Billy's voice.
Everyone began to count down.
"10. 9. 8. 7. 6. 5. 4. 3. 2.1"
" HOME OF THE BRAVE!"
Zack heard zero and immediately clamped his eyes shut. Tears covering his slightly reddened face.
"You did it man" shouted Jason, watching on as his friend wiped his eyes with his striped t shirt.
"Thanks for the help guys" He replied looking up at everyone with red eyes.
"Anytime Zack" said Kimberly with a toothy grin.
They had all took a few turns, telling some embarrassing and personal truths like Jason had to tell everyone the colour of his underwear, Kimberly having to admit that if she could be a famous person, she would be Madonna and Billy had to come clean that his dream was to become a bioanalyst or an inventor. He didn't mind telling anyone what his passion was. Maybe the game wasn't that bad at all.
The group also did some interesting dares. Trini had to stuff 5 marshmallows her mouth and sing Twinkle Twinkle little star. Jason had to eat some of the snacks they prepared, without the use of his hands, Zack had to sing a love song to Trini and Kimberly had to raise her hand in their next class every time the teacher asked a question and answer in a British accent, she had also already used up a pass on drinking a beer. She had never even had a sip, never mind drink a whole can and Trini wasn't keen on stealing a beer from her dads stash in the fridge.
The bottle had just landed on Billy
"Truth or dare?" asked Jason, since he spun the bottle.
"Truth" he replied. He hadn't said dare as of yet. But nobody had noticed.
"OK. The card says what is your biggest fear?"
Billy looked down at his knees anxiously, he hesitated for a few seconds before giving an answer "My biggest fear is, is uh, being alone and not accepted within society" he said very quickly.
The rest of the group looked at each other in search of what to say to make him feel better.
"Hey man. We're your friends and we accept you, so why won't anyone else? You'll always have us" everyone was wide eyed as these words had come out of Zacks mouth.
Billy looked up at Zack and smiled "Thankyou Zachary. Oh I mean Zack. It's most appreciated."
Trini patted Billy on the back and gave Zack a big squeeze before sitting down to spin the bottle which landed on Kimberly this time.
"Truth or Dare Kim?"
"Ooooh I went for truth last time, so how about a dare" she said excitedly and clapped her hands together with great trepidation.
Trini picked up a card, flipped it over and clasped her palm to her mouth.
"What is it?" asked Kimberly her eyes wide open, her hands beginning to feel twitchy.
Trini looked up at started at Kimberly.
"You have to kiss the person next to you"
Zack and Jason looked at each other in shock as they were either side of Kimberly
Kimberly gingerly moved her head and looked at both Zack and Jason. Her breath caught in her throat. She looked at Jason He's like my brother, ewwww. She turned to look at Zack...
"I knew you wouldn't be able to resist the Zackster" he said through a huge grin and a wink.
Kimberly winced and scrunched up her nose "Get real. And Zackster? Ewwww" she put up her palm towards Zacks face and looked away before turning to Jason on her left. He's not really my brother though. And I always kiss his cheek. Yeah but Kim, this is your first kiss. She battled inside her own mind and just couldn't pick. She felt a tightness in her chest and seemed to feel very hot all of a sudden.
Jason was petrified. He couldn't and wouldn't say anything. He had never kissed a girl before. He couldn't kiss kimberly. She was like his sister. But she's not your actual SISTER...he thought.
Jason tried to block out the voice in his head, and continued to stare at Kimberly who hadn't taken her eyes off him for what felt like a millennium.
Kim flared up her nostrils, exhaled deeply and decided what she would do.
"OK. Here goes" she squeaked out. The tightness in her chest now so pronounced, it felt as though iron maiden were having a concert behind her breastbone.
She turned to look at Zack again and totally caught Jason by surprise as she swiftly moved her head to her left and planted her lips on Jason's mouth quite forcefully. So forcefully in fact, that she felt her teeth clash against his teeth rather painfully and they both reacted by wincing, but she puckered up as Jason said "ouch" and planted a kiss onto his lips. Both of them deaf to the cries of disgust from their comrades.
Zack leaned Into Trini and was pointing at the two best friends, laughing uncontrollably, trying to say something before Trini shut him up. Trini herself grabbed a hold on Billy who's jaw was on the floor with awe. All three of them with looks of disgust, amusement and shock.
Kimberly and Jason didn't hear or see anything around them. Kimberly's mind was totally numb. Jason felt his mind relax once Kimberly pressed her lips to his but his hands became clammy and he was shivering from nervous tension.
His teeth still hurting from the collision, he stared into Kimberly's eyes and she was staring back, moving her head backwards and away from him but still staring at him as though he was an alien who had just crash landed in the now blazing hot basement which in reality, hadn't increased in temperature at all.
Once far enough, she briskly moved away and onto her cushion, staring at her knees as she crossed them underneath her, not daring to look at anyone yet.
"Kim. You did know you can kiss on the cheek right?" Zack broke the silence, looking at Kimberly in total shock.
Kimberly continued staring at her knees. Jason also dared not look up, he was as still as a statue, stuck half dangling off the cushion.
"You could've kissed his forehead, his hand, his darn nose but NO. You went all in" Zack attempted to steady himself and not cry with laughter.
"You also had the option of using your last remaining pass card" added Billy, this caused Zack to howl with laughter.
Kimberly established some courage and finally looked up at the others, shrugging her shoulders and pressing her lips together, curling them up slightly, her cheeks the shade of fresh cotton candy.
"Wow. Jason, Was it any good?" Zack asked, getting a slap on his leg from Trini for his troubles.
Kimberly looked up at Jason expectantly, every girl would want to know if they were a good kisser or not. Her teeth still aching, she continued anxiously staring at her best friend.
Jason found Kimberly's eyes with his own mischievous eyes and slowly nodded his head whilst curling his lips into a smile, drawing out the same expression from Kimberly.
2002
The baby crying loudly in the seat in front of them was really starting to annoy Kimberly. But she continued to stare lovingly into the dark brown eyes next to her and squeeze the strong comforting hand that was resting on her leg. Jason's chin was on her shoulder, looking contentedly into her eyes. They were leaning into each other albeit uncomfortably as the seat belts restrained them somewhat, but they were more than comfortable. The hum and the gentle swaying of the airplane a welcome distraction from another child a few rows behind, screaming himself hoarse.
"We'll be landing in Angel Grove Airport any minute now. Can you believe it?" Jason asked. A wide grin ingrained onto his face.
Kimberly returned his smile "I know. It's going to be so weird being there again after so long, but we're starting a life together where we grew up. How amazing is that! It's like a fairy-tale" she said through her smile.
"It's perfect!" they both said in unison.
The plane wobbled lightly making them bounce a little bit, the hand luggage above their heads banging around, adding to the sound of the crying children. The captain announced that the landing would now start, both Kimberly and Jason couldn't wait. They braced themselves and held on to each other with more ferocity.
Just behind Jason, there was a young teen listening to his CD Walkman with his big headphones. I wish I would've bought one for this flight she thought as the continued noises spoiled her peaceful bliss. As the plane descended, their ears began to pop. Oh great.
"Pinky. Look out your window. I'm beginning to see the buildings" said Jason causing Kimberly to be abruptly taken out of her thoughts.
She looked to her left and through the window. Jason had given her his window seat, he knew how much she loved looking out at the world, ever since they teleported all around the universe in their ranger days. She strained her eyes to avoid the beautiful California sun and saw a collection of tiny little buildings which signalled they were close to landing.
She felt Jason's chin slide onto her neck and he placed a gentle kiss just beneath her ear, on the sensitive area of the jaw. This simple action sent wild tremors along her nerves, causing her body to shiver and stiffen slightly.
"I love you" he mumbled.
His slightly hoarse, gruff whisper had just added an extra depth to the whole situation, mischievous thoughts invading her mind, she just could not wait to get into their new apartment.
Kimberly turned her head slightly and planted a gentle kiss onto his lips whilst he was busy appreciating the buildings becoming more visible. "I love you too" she murmured, smiling and admiring his handsome features whilst telling herself.
If I had headphones, I wouldn't be able to hear you say these words. All the ear popping and crying kids in the world would be worth it just to hear you tell me you love me.
She reluctantly turned her gaze to the window as Jason pointed out that he was sure they had just passed the rocks near to the command centre, and would be near the airport now.
Kimberly glanced at Jason before turning her attention to the view outside, her smile glued to her face, her life feeling complete.
Undisclosed area
Sometimes darkness can be like an old friend. You cling on to it with hope, as it brings peace and tranquillity.
The darkness that cloaked this room, wasn't like that at all. This was the darkness that hijacks you of your strongest sense, and replaces it with a paralysing dread. If it wasn't for the ghostly, faint residue of smoke, slithering around the floor, you would think you were blind.
There was a time when moonlight, magic and candles illuminated this room. This was no such time.
This room had looked like it had been unoccupied for quite some time. There was a pungent smell lingering around that could be described as burnt flesh mixed with the putrid smell of fear and evil.
A blinding scarlet light relieved the room of its depressing nature, accompanied by a crack of lightning and two beings appearing from the inauspicious glow.
"We are finally home my darling" a metallic, sinister voice broke the silence. This masculine voice didn't seem human.
"Yes we are. But why is it so satisfyingly dark and gloomy? A bit too dark if you ask me." Replied a feminine voice which contained similar robotic characteristics.
"Because dear. Zedd and Rita are long gone. Nobody has lived here for years my sweet. All of the united alliance of evil fell and this moon palace was left for the taking." he replied, pointing at what seemed like thin air with his hand.
A spark emitted abruptly from his hand and lit some old gnarly candles which were placed around the room, filling the room with dim red light for what seemed like the first time in years. The walls and floors soaked up the light like a fish returning to water after being left stranded in a desert.
"There we go my princess. That should suffice" he continued.
The slithering smoke covered the ground making it very difficult to see the actual floor. A pedestal stood in the middle of the room upon which was what looked like a throne made of stone. It was large and pointed at the top, grey and very uncomfortable looking. Behind of which there was what looked like a fan of some sorts, protruding from a hole in the wall. It was standing still and covered in what seemed to be rubble, dust and residue. Blocking any light that could be seeping through.
On either side of the throne, there were raised platforms leading what appeared to be big holes that were possibly entry/exit points, both were completely blocked with rubble.
The red glow from the candles bounced off the walls illuminating the faces of the two beings that had just crashed landed into the room, unbelievably they looked like machines. One was green in colour with silver armour covering his body. His companion was a female with a silver body accented in pink armour.
The male moved to sit on the throne in the room. "I think Zedd was a rather messy pup wasn't he" his robotic voice reverberating around the gloomy unkempt room, his metallic body clinking and shifting to find a comfortable position.
"It appears so. We will need to give the throne room a makeover my dear." Replied the female.
A brilliant flash of fiery gold filled up the dimly lit throne room.
A female appeared before them. Her whole body was encapsulated in brilliant gold armour, sharp spikes sticking out from various parts of the armour. She looked almost human. Especially when compared to the two mechanical beings already in the room. She was clutching a pointy sword in one hand, her other hand was clutched around a curly head of hair belonging to a young teenage woman. The young woman was dressed in a stunning yellow and gold dashiki, which was unfortunately coated in blood. Her face bruised up and swollen, her eyes were closed and her body limp. But there was still a pulse.
"Aaaah Scorpina, finally you return. And with a gift I see" said the male sat in the throne.
"Yes Prince Gasket. I travelled all the way to a place called Africa to find this vile human. I remember her vividly. I had fought her once when she was a power ranger under Zordons leadership. Her name is Aisha." Scorpina turned to look at her captive.
"Zordon isn't here to save you anymore is he" questioned scorpina glaring at Aisha. There was no response.
"You mean to tell me. You went traveling around that despicable planet and found an ex ranger?" asked prince Gasket.
"We specifically told you to capture a power ranger. Not a has been" Gaskets companion had stood next to the throne. A bow and arrow in her right hand, her silver fingers clasped menacingly around the bow.
"I'm sorry Princess Archerina. I have tried to seek out whoever I could. I learned that a new set of power rangers reside in a jungle. I along with silverback attempted to infiltrate their base camp. But powerful magic prevented us from even going near. Silverback has gone searching elsewhere whilst I wandered around the jungles for weeks until I saw this ex ranger" Scorpina explained.
"Very well Scorpina but what are we going to do with this has been. Master will not be pleased with this. Dispose of her before we get into any bother " Gasket was glaring at scorpina now.
Unbeknownst to the evil beings in the room, Aisha's eyes fluttered slightly. She kept her eyes shut but her ears open. Her heart was racing faster than it had ever done before. She had been pretending to be unconscious for quite a while now. Listening and waiting for a way to escape.
"Hold on now dear. No need to act in such haste. Now, I am aware that the Zeo rangers are no more. But we also know they gained some new powers. Whether it is Tommy and his filthy friends or some new kids, I'm sure that horrid Angel grove and that disgusting country called America is bound to have some rangers residing there. This human is their friend. I'm pretty sure we can use her as a bargaining chip and lure the rangers to us. The master will be pleased." proposed Archerina.
Excellent. I'm sure the rangers will be here soon to kick their butt's. Wait... Who are the rangers? Thought Aisha as she continued to pretend to be unconscious.
"I knew you were so beautiful and wise when I married you my love. But you have exceeded my expectations" replied gasket. He turned to scorpina "Throw her in the dungeons. I am sure you know where they are" he added.
"At once my Prince" responded Scorpina with a curt nod, she dragged Aisha away and out of the former throne room. Aisha doing her best to stay still whilst hiding the pain from the skin grazing the hard palace floor.
Prince Gasket sat up on the throne and raised his hand once more. He turned to his side and blew away the rubble in front of one of the platforms. It was indeed an exit point. The clearance opened this platform which allowed moonlight to seep into the Palace.
Gasket stood up and walked to the open platform, his metallic feet clanking on the palace floor with every step. Ahead of him, shining brightly was a big beautiful planet. Blue and white in colour, brilliantly spherical. Archerina and Gasket stood by side and stared at it greedily.
"A long time has passed since we have been in this position Archerina my love. With everybody dead or gone, from that fool Zedd to that floating head, Zordon of Eltar, we have the perfect opportunity to once and for all destroy the power rangers and take over that planet they call home."
