How About It?
"Another bowl, please!" Naruto proclaimed.
Kagome blanched. "You have quite the appetite, don't you?" Good thing she'd just gotten paid. Although, if she was going to start looking after him, she might need to pick up some over-time…
Resting her chin on her palm, Kagome considered the young boy happily slurping noodles. He seemed good natured and easy to please. Maybe this wouldn't be that hard.
"So, Naruto," she started. "We should talk now about why I'm visiting you."
"Oh, yeah!" he stopped eating for a minute and swiveled towards her on the stool. "Why?"
"The Hokage asked me to… well he seems to think that you'd…" Kagome paused in her explanation. How exactly did she phrase it?
"Uh huh…" Naruto quirked an eyebrow.
"You are by yourself," she continued gently, "and the Hokage thought it might be nice to have someone to look after you. And that person could be me. What do you say?"
Watching his expression closely, Kagome waited, and felt a pinch in her heart when his expression turned glum. He turned away, focusing back on his bowl of ramen, poking around at it with his chopsticks. "I don't need a babysitter. Thanks anyways."
"It's not babysitting," she consoled, hoping that she sounded convincing. "He wants you to have someone to rely on. You're still young, you could use some adult supervision."
Shoving his bowl away, Naruto slid off the chair. "Why does he care now? Why does anyone care?" he frowned at her. "Thank you for the ramen."
As he walked away, Kagome hurriedly pulled money out of her wallet for the bill. That did not go as good as I had hoped.
"Naruto, wait!"
